    I just had to do this on my 1991 Explorer. My shifter came off while trying to change gears!!. The play I had was very bad: I knew something was not right, and I was right. I went to NAPA and bought the shifter rebuild kit and did what you did. My two pins looked in good shape also so I did not change mine either. The kit did indeed improve the shifting 100%. The bolt that holds the shifter on the transmission shaft had worked it's way almost out causing it to rotate freely and and just lift up and off. All better now!

    @8:49, my BAD, I was wrong, went back and look at my pics, you were right--that flimsy "skirted" seal goes on last, ideally tucked under the first little bellows on that "fixed" main-seal with the 3 screws.

    Hey man, great video but I noticed at 5:42 that I’m pretty sure your missing a bushing retaining pin. Mine had 2 pins in oposite sides that I had to tap back to get the spring washers and bushings in. If you still have a little slop that might be why.

    • @NickG
      @NickG  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the tip. I reused my old pins. The shifter came out so tight. That I missed shift quiet a bit till I got use to it.

    • @MajorCaliber
      @MajorCaliber 2 года назад +1

      @@NickG My 2 pins were visibly "necked down" by a couple mils... luckily they both came out with a flat-nose punch and moderate tapping... new ones went in so easy I took 'em back out half-way, applied BLUE loctite, then back in... Dorman, Made in Cheena, what can you do... lol.

    I can't get the shifter bolt off because after I take it off the one in it won't go on the other end to tighten. Is there any other way to do it it seems like it only takes to good turns on the other side to crack it loose

    • @NickG

      You can try hitting it lightly with a soft hammer. Be careful not to damage the threads.

  • @xpicklepie

    On my '88 I have a sloppy lever. The lever itself is wiggly under the thick plastic shaft. The whole lever will turn on the cast iron knuckle with vice grips and doesn't seem to tighten or loosen. WTF!?

    • @NickG
      @NickG  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for watching. I doubt a worn bushing would disable the shifter to go into reverse. Start with the simplest things first. Are you sure he’s pressing the clutch in all the way? Is the transmission low on gear oil. Is the clutch reservoir low?

      @@NickG learned that you can have it in any gear and still remove it. However, when you place it back it won't fall where it needs to be and the gears won't shift. Had to press the clutch, put a flathead inside press and pull it into neutral so the shift bar base would fall back in place. It worked. Learned the hard way on that one
