• The G9 works exactly the same as the GH5 on the Ronin-S as far as I could tell they work exactly the same, except for one benefit for the G9-the USB charging.
• The assembly and balancing of the gimbal was reasonably easy and intuitive. However, if you’re looking for the instructions and other paperwork, they are hidden in the bottom of the box in this funky little recess that you might have otherwise missed.
• There are 3 USB cables provided in the leather case. For the GH5 there is a USB-C version, and a micro USB for the G9. There’s also a little infrared cable that’s used for cameras that don’t function this way over USB.
• The Ronin-S can handle up to 3.6 kilos or 8 pounds, so any Panasonic mirrorless shouldn’t be a problem, but the carriage is nice and large and can even take the GH5 with a cage on it.
• You definitely want to download the app, which for android users is the Ronin app and not the “Ronin Assistant”. The Assistant will just frustrate you whilst failing to connect, so make sure you get the correct app.
• The record button, which will start and stop recording, also doubles as AF-ON when pressed halfway. This will work in all focusing modes, but if you drop it into manual focus you can use the follow focus wheel, I found the responsiveness to be quite good and was impressed with the precision.
• You can hold the button near the focus wheel to change the direction of the focusing.
• I recommend you update your firmware, which is done through your computer by using the provided USB charging cable, because they’re have been some performance updates released, but mine was working fine for these Panasonic cameras right out of the box.
• The G9 can also be powered by the gimbal over USB, which is pretty great because the Ronin-S has a 2400mAh battery that’s rated for up to 12 hours. So you’ll likely have some juice to spare to donate to your camera if you’re using one that can be charged via USB. The GH5 unfortunately does not support this feature.
• Make sure to set your camera to “Tether” mode in the USB settings, which can be found in the wrench, under USB Mode.
• A cool function you can do with this gimbal is found in the app, under “Create” then “Track”. There you'll have the option to set points for preset movement. It will smoothly move from point A to point B over the duration selected, and start the recording on your camera automatically, then when it gets to the end point it will wait for the designated amount of time then stop the recording.

I've had the Ronin-S for a bit and use the GH5. I have to say the interface with the GH5 has been great. Used it all day yesterday at a wedding and while I was exhausted from carrying the load (which I realize is lighter than many systems being m4/3) I have to say it was great on battery life, function was mostly flawless, and the stabilization looks fantastic. Good overview man.

I think I've said this before?... when watching your videos, I feel like I should be taking notes. You pack SO MUCH information into your content that I end up needing to watch 2 or 3 times to really absorb it all. Another fantastic review G, I'm not in the market for a gimbal but I just saved this review for future possibilities. Thank you Gerald for telling me about the usb ports and the fact there is a regular USB within the 3.1 micro usb port. Earlier this morning I contacted DJI to complain about none of the cables within the DJI rsc2 package fitted my Lumix g9 camera! Drrrrrr

I would love to see this in action, walking down a hallway, 1st AC behind, whip pan to open doorway; so many possibilities. Seems like it out performs the Crane2 (I’ve only used the RoninS once w a 5Div, not enough for a full test)
First and foremost, THANK YOU for testing it with the G9. Trying to get info of compatability with such a camera and the gimbal from pretty much any source has been rather difficult, and DJI pretty much ignored the questions I had regarding such.
I do have an additional question... Can the focus wheel be moved to the right side for us southpaws, or is it only usable on the left?
+Sub for good videos, AND for being the first person I've found that's actually tested something other than a GH5/5S on it!

As far as the focus wheel, I haven't physically tried, but there is an identical mount on the other side in exactly the opposite position, so my gut tells me that you can switch it. Also, I checked the forums and a few users have suggested you can as well.
Definitely glad to hear such. I suspect I could have gotten used to it being on the left, but I'd rather be able to use my left arm for holding the gimbal ^_^

great info, handy tips like getting the USB-tethering mode correct, etc. thanks, these tips are great learning-curve time-savers. You didn't go into it much, but alluded to it, that some features are also compatible to earlier GH-series models. I'm wondering if firmware updates are needed to both the Ronin-S *and* those cameras. I'm personally not a fan of camera firmware updates, if not absolutely necessary IMHO.

Hey, great review! Just one question: IBIS on or off when the GH5 is on the Ronin S? I mainly use manual lenses, and after a few tests with this gimbal and my GH5 and I can observe somo funny lateral jittering in some shots. I just wonder if the GH5 built-in stabilization is affecting the Ronin S smoothness in some degree. Your experience and thoughts on that will be very welcome. Thanks!

Hey man how are you getting on with the setup? Decided on the ronin s but have been struggling to find a camera to pair it with.
@@masonpilgrim7243 it's doing great with my GH5 and Nicey Rig cage. Balancing is easy, and it's easy to connect to the Ronin too. I use a work around for motion timelapse though. Sometimes it doesn't fire correctly, as if the timing is off. So I start the timelapse on my camera and let the Ronin S run its motion timelapse program "dry"

Problem is..When using GH5, Ronin S AND an Monitor connected...PC Tether (USB & HDMI) then there are some operational issues......Like, you can't see the camera monitor anymore...Only the Monitor...Do you have any tips to fix this?
I just ran into this with my WEEBILL Lab. So frustrated! I am using the HDMI for a transmitter, so I need the camera's monitor!
Since this video came out we have the G95, a G9 GH5 hybrid which has some of the features from each but a little less expensive and was recommended to me as a good B camera. Can you test the Ronin S and also see what is needed to charge the G95. Cheers!

Is a gimbal really needed for the gh5? I mean isn't the ibis so good on the gh5 that its not needed. Buy a cage and a handle grip and its identical to a gimbal.

Hi, David. I haven't tested with either of those unfortunately. I did a quick balance check on the NIkon Z6 to make sure it would support it well (which it does), but I didn't do a thorough functionality test. The G7 I'm curious about. If it acts the same as a G9, it should work, but I'm not sure if any of the protocols have changed since the G7 release. Please let me know how it works.

First of all, great video and great production value. Your time and attention to this is most evident. With regards to the tracking (at 4:50), setting the points in the application are nice but in real world use I found it to be frustrating. In all the YT videos I have seen I have seen this demonstrated the same way you did. That is to just randomly select points on the the app for the camera to track which looks great in the video but, in practice, if you want to start and stop at specific points, using your finger on the app, proves to be quite challenging because of the way the app interacts with the Ronnin-S. It is WAY TOO sensitive to make fine adjustments. Just another example of how things seem great in theory, but not so much in practice. If you could move the camera using the joystick or manually with your hands to set the start and end points, it would be a winner. Unfortunately this is not possible or perhaps I was just missing something. If I was, I would be delighted to be enlightened.
You're right that it's pretty sensitive. I actually figured out a better way after playing with it some more. You can tap the tilt and pan numbers themselves and then dial them in up to a single degree rather than dragging those big circles around. It is MUCH easier.
That is much better but it would be GREAT if you could just position the camera by hand and set that point in the app. DJI seems to have a discontinuity between the designers and users with all their products.
I agree. I was looking for that option. Because you can position it, but then there is no option to save that position as the start point. That would be easier.

Gerald, have you tried using the focus wheel with any of the olympus lenses and had any success? I spoke to other videographers who said the wheel works fine for them (even though they're not on the official compatibility list) but I have not had any luck personally.

I don't have a battery grip to test, but I want to say yes, because it fits a 1D X, which has to be taller than a GH5 with grip.

Question. Is there a rig that records pro res raw hq,lidar focus active track ,w tilta motors to control aperture,focus,zoom, connected to atomos ninja v recorder, set track for atomos timelapes on gimbal with total control of motors, gimbal recorder,start/stop, and camera settings with total compatibility? I started 1 yr ago and have stuggled peice by peice to put this rig togather and if its not one thing its another. My accumulated setup is 2 Gh5s,atomos ninja, atomos ninja v +,2 sync modules, 2 nano motors,1 m motor, Monfrotto 460 gimbal. Next to nothing as to put this combination or instructions anywhere togather to do a motion timelapes and standard b roll shot in auto focus or manual focus option, ? Basically prores raw hq has limitations to many custom shots combined with control and stabilization accessories in my experience . The whole pro res raw thing seems impossible except in post haha.i have yet to put my equiptment to work outside of just buyin more crap. I Chopped that up pretty good! Nevermind. Doing a great JOB. !!Thanks for all you do. Prob should had timestamped this book pun intended.

Gerald I have owned G9 for year great camera wondering how far does stablization take you? If I at night with the G9 can handhold for 2 seconds at at 600 iso get a very clean shot vs a7iii at 6400 @15 wouldn't i be better off with a stablized camera like Gh5 or G9 (outside of moving night subjects) than an a7iii.I do know dynamic range is better on a7iii (sdf if you really need it) but In so many words do you feel like a G9 stablization makes up for or equals the playing field verses apc or full frames sensors in most situtions?
Thanks for making this video! Question: will the focus wheel work even with lenses not officially supported as long as they can be controlled by the camera? For example, the 12-35 (mark ii) is supported, but I'm wondering if the 12-35 (mark i) would work, or something like the sigma 16mm.
I can't say 100%, but it should work as you describe. All it's doing is sending a signal to the camera, so as long as the camera can focus those lenses, the Ronin should too. It does work on the Sigma 16mm for sure. I've tested it on that one.

Hi The Ronin s was a great Gimbal but unfortunately, possibly due to a firmware problem DJi have stopped selling the mcc type c cable so if you lose your cable or break it your pretty much done for you'll need to buy another dslr or a newer gimbal . Dji will confirm this. Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news to all gh5/Ronin S owners.

Yes for the G9, but no for GH5. GH5 doesn't have USB charging.

The G9 has pretty stellar stabilization, but it can't replace a gimbal. The Crane v2 is great. I guess it would really depend on what kind of shots you were doing. A gimbal look is unique, but sometimes unnecessary for the project at hand.

Yes, they are both compatible. Only difference is the GH5 doesn't charge via USB like the G9 does.

Yeah, it should. It can house some pretty big cameras.

It depends, but usually 1-2 days.
Does this works with BMPCC4K?
Normally I would say yes, because you can even put a C300 on this thing, but the BMPCC is really wide, so I'm not sure. We'll have to wait and test it when I get my hands on one. Good question, though.

Hmm. I know this is probably an old video but I just bought this and that focus wheel is total crap. On slow it takes over a minute to rack focus and on fast it jumps in steps and looks horrible. This is with supported lenses too. Also the damn thing drifts on it’s pan motor? I don’t agree with you that this is the best gh5 gimbal with so many obvious faults. Anybody considering this now, don’t waste your money.
Please .... I love you but can you slow down a little sometimes so also other than fluently english spoken people can here the pronounced word you spoke although if its not allways possible to follow and understand the total content as quickly that your tongue stumbles 🤪 🤗
