I budget, not because I struggle financially but because after a couple of weeks/months it's actually very natural for my husband and I and I feel relieved that I don't have to worry about spending too much because we have all of our spends/savings already organized. It is just part of my routine now and I love having everything organized and sort of predictable :)

when you want to move to those pasture-raised, ethical foods but still stay in a budget, you just can't buy those things in the same way you were before. I have a massive freezer and buy 1/4 cows or 1/2 pigs and whole chickens or other sorts of bulk orders or cheaper cuts straight from farmers or farmers markets. It's a lot of roasts, ground meats, and chicken legs or whole chickens (just getting a breast or wings seems like such a luxury). we have a lot of canned salmon too to make sure it's the good stuff (alaskan, wild). I can't stomach the price of just buying an organic, pasture-raised single cut like a chicken breast at a store, it's too expensive. But I will not compromise on the quality of the meat my family consumes so that means sacrificing space in my home for a big freezer and time in the kitchen doing a bit more food prep or maybe my time driving to a farm or a neighbouring city to pick up a bulk order. (this point of view and strategy from a land-locked gal in the middle of SW Ontario)

To the how to keep your house warm, but affordably in the winter: seal your windows with plastic, if you have the money invest in good windows it makes a huge difference. Get something that seals the bottom of your doors to the outside or put a bunched up towel down. Keep the curtains closed (I totally open mine during the sunny hours, but make sure to close them right away when its dark). Run your heater/furnace really low, like 66 or so. If you can handle it colder have it colder. Wear layers at home and have a lot of blankets. At night also turn your heat down (or if you have a fancy thermostat you can program it to drop the set temperature at night) because a) you're just sleeping and can cover up and b) when there is nobody up and moving around it takes more energy to keep the temp up.
It is so good for you to share with homeowners and parents as profoundly young as you two are with so little experience of spending money as adults when you suddenly took on responsibilities. It's a big help for others to have an example, a guide, one couple's method.
I'm in South Texas. We do not have a furnace. We have a heater and an air conditioner. An air conditioner here is a MUST. A lot of people I know don't have heat; they just have fire places or space heaters. It doesn't really get cold here.

I found switching to a planted based diet saved me so. much. money. Plant foods are more nutritionally dense and cheap and honestly where all the flavour is if you do it right! def a tip to switch if you wanna save more and want to do right by your bodies, ethics and environment.

Which may contribute to people thinking heating in cold regions is super expensive.

I have gotten pretty saavy at stretching our grocery budget. I do price match and it is worth my time and effort. It's not for everyone but it's the best way for us to get all the things we need and have the treats that we want. The other thing that has made a big difference is to consciously work in meatless meals or meals where meat is not the focus. My husband was resistant to this idea at first, but now realizes that he's not giving up anything by eating this way.

I did the question about affording to live in a such cold temperatures because here in Greece in Winter the cost is about 120$/month. Greece is generally warm but in Winter it may get a little freezing for us: like -5 Celsius. It was a huge surprise for me to know that the heat cost is about half of what we pay here in Greece, while groceries is twice as much as we pay for good quality food. Wow. A pro tip from my mom for balancing healthy/organic/eco-friendly with a budget: prioritize buying organic in the big areas where it has the most health impact. Ex. If produce has a removable skin (citrus, bananas), buy it conventional since you’re removing what the pesticides would touch anyway. Always buy fresh caught unfrozen fish as the cost/benefit of quality is higher than in ground beef for example.
As someone who lives in a hot region- aka Arizona, we have a heat pump, we use it as AC during our miserable summer and then as a heat pump during winter. We actually save quite a bit of $$$ because we use a hat pump instead of a furnace and our house uses electricity instead of half electric half gas.😯
We have an HVAC unit that cools and heats! I live in GA and it can get up over 100 degrees ferenheit in the summer and can get as low as 18 degrees ferenheit in the winter! ❤️

When I was young I relied on public transit and I was almost always either super late to work or an hour+ early. Weve been on single income since april 2015 and will be until 2024 when the youngest starts kindergarten. Our income is only 30,000 for our family of 5. Our mortgage is our only debt, and we dont shop for things constantly. When we do, its gifted or thrifted!
We dont have gas, just regular hydro. We live in MB and our Hydro in our mobile home goes up to $300 in the winter months. But I hear others even pay $500
I can definitely identify with scrounging and having to pause saving etc. It's hard to not feel guilty about not putting money aside for stuff, but when I was in grad school we had to be super careful. Now that I'm working a grownup job and my husband is doing his PhD, (luckily with some great scholarships), we try to maintain a similar budget, so that we're not going over with spending. That means we're closer to buying our house!

How did you guys save for a down payment on a house and what percentage are you expected to save in Canada? (e.g. in Queensland, Australia it is encouraged that you save at least 20% of the total price of a house ((20% of a $500,000 house would be a $100,000 deposit😖)))
For first time home owners (in Canada) we actually only had to put down 5%. I think that has changed since we bought our house though... For a second home you have to pay the 20%. But having to only put 5% down on our first house made it fairly reasonable to save for a down payment. Hope this helps!
The weather is pretry mild all year round in Los Angeles. Your fancy if you own a wall heater lol. If your hot all you have to do is get under a tree or open a window. If it's cold, all you need is a light jacket and your good. I never owned a heavy jacket until I moved to Northwest Texas. When we moved here it was winter and u felt like I was being poked with needles 😥. I was ready to hop back in the car and go back to California 😆 We have to have central heat and air if you don't want to melt or freeze.
For me saving is a part of the budget because if I have my money in my hand - on my main account or cash in my wallet - I will spend it and I dont even know where and how :D also a good tip is to count your money, especially if you use a lot of cash. Sometimes I don't even know how much I have spend a month or how much I still have, because I loose track of cash. On your account it is easier, because it just shows how much you have. So yeah, for me it really helps to save up to have a separaet sub-account and a separate wallet for my savings. I dont save for anything specific but this money is still for me to spend if I need it for anything but to be honest I dont really go for it - when I have a bigger amount saved up I feel guilty to touch them and use them
I sometimes impulse buy and if I go to places like Target I take my boyfriend with me because he hates shopping and it makes it where I don't stay and go to places in the store such as clothing since he likes to be in and out of a store.

Here it's our air conditioning bill that's crazy. We have both a heater and AC. But my friend in Rhode Island said they only have heat, no AC.

Weve been on single income since april 2015 and will be until 2024 when the youngest starts kindergarten. Our income is only 30,000 for our family of 5. Our mortgage is our only debt, and we dont shop for things constantly. When we do, its gifted or thrifted!

We dont have gas, just regular hydro. We live in MB and our Hydro in our mobile home goes up to $300 in the winter months. But I hear others even pay $500
I can definitely identify with scrounging and having to pause saving etc. It's hard to not feel guilty about not putting money aside for stuff, but when I was in grad school we had to be super careful. Now that I'm working a grownup job and my husband is doing his PhD, (luckily with some great scholarships), we try to maintain a similar budget, so that we're not going over with spending. That means we're closer to buying our house!

How did you guys save for a down payment on a house and what percentage are you expected to save in Canada? (e.g. in Queensland, Australia it is encouraged that you save at least 20% of the total price of a house ((20% of a $500,000 house would be a $100,000 deposit😖)))
Adrianna Mikayla depends where you live in Canada ( it’s huge)
For first time home owners (in Canada) we actually only had to put down 5%. I think that has changed since we bought our house though...
For a second home you have to pay the 20%. But having to only put 5% down on our first house made it fairly reasonable to save for a down payment.

The weather is pretry mild all year round in Los Angeles. Your fancy if you own a wall heater lol. If your hot all you have to do is get under a tree or open a window. If it's cold, all you need is a light jacket and your good. I never owned a heavy jacket until I moved to Northwest Texas. When we moved here it was winter and u felt like I was being poked with needles 😥. I was ready to hop back in the car and go back to California 😆 We have to have central heat and air if you don't want to melt or freeze.

For me saving is a part of the budget because if I have my money in my hand - on my main account or cash in my wallet - I will spend it and I dont even know where and how :D also a good tip is to count your money, especially if you use a lot of cash. Sometimes I don't even know how much I have spend a month or how much I still have, because I loose track of cash. On your account it is easier, because it just shows how much you have. So yeah, for me it really helps to save up to have a separaet sub-account and a separate wallet for my savings. I dont save for anything specific but this money is still for me to spend if I need it for anything but to be honest I dont really go for it - when I have a bigger amount saved up I feel guilty to touch them and use them
I'm from Florida and I don't have a furnace, I think I would melt. I spend a lot of money with air condition though! Very hot here!
We do the same thing you guys do tally up what we spend in a month an what we have saved in a month etc

I sometimes impulse buy and if I go to places like Target I take my boyfriend with me because he hates shopping and it makes it where I don't stay and go to places in the store such as clothing since he likes to be in and out of a store.
It is such a diferente life that we have, but also so similar in some ways. I live in the capital city of Brazil, here it’s HOT like the whole year, the average temp it’s around 25°C, literally the colder we get it’s 10°C. Can imagine how it is to live in a place here you can’t go outside 😰
