@@Jackthetrashcanman Yes, Morbius DS is a true masterpeice, single handedly resurrecting a dead console, and having photorealistic graphics on it no less. It has sold 3 Morbillion copies, and has a 404 out of 100 on Metacritic, beating the previous highest rated game by hundreds of points. But why am i even explaining this, everyone and their dead grandma, and even the Moon Men have bought it 69 times over. I am sure Saber will do a 42 hour long video on it, he is one of the last people to have not done so after all.

Its very weird to hear these kind of situations and feel so disconnected from them. I loved gaming way too much to even imagine damaging the equipment. If I ever got angry enough to be rough with the items, it was because it wasn't working to begin with (ex: Scrubbing a disc harder to clean it, smacking an erroring console, blowing into a cartridge, etc). Still like any issue, its different for some people, and perhaps the anger was so intense that the flying thought to destroy was saying "Maybe its better if I don't have this game around to play". Still, maybe that foundation factor of 'sharing' the games helped to contribute. When I was growing up, I was the only one in my family seriously loving games, and my issue was being told I could only play on the weekends. So those weekends were gaming binges, but I never had a rivalry or sense of anger to compete with it, and I can easily see the anger in having your gaming time 'burrowed' or stolen from you, and that sense of defensive tension when you do get to actually play.

I never could damage something I owned, I always personified objects as needing respect / having a life and experiences to give lol so to damage something that otherwise works normally would make me feel like shit. That said the angriest I ever got while playing games was (as a kid) trying to 100% Bomberman 64 and when I couldnt do some of the more tricky maneuvers to get the gold cards, I'd punch my leg lol. More recently I got PISSED at the latest Competitive Deathmatch on Overwatch. Total trash game mode because Hog was the only meta. If there was even one hog in a match, I'd have to play Reaper or lose. Ugh. I only banged my desk a few times in frustration but nothing to cause damage though. But I get the feeling -- I hated the game mode, thought it was the worst, but I would keep playing it from this strange sense of self-loathing that I never have otherwise. So weird how you can be drawn in by toxic failure. "APPARENTLY I SUCK. TIME TO SEE HOW BAD IT CAN GET" If you start doing better, you don't feel redeemed, just "yeah, ok, yeah, yeah" and keep playing. But if you keep losing, you feel even more justified in your anger in a toxic feedback loop AND KEEP PLAYING STILL.

I feel like PvP stuff in general can be moe infuriating than playing a game solo. In the latter, it's you against the game, so you have the chance of learning it and outsmarting it to come out on top. When going against other people, there's always a chance that you may (constantly) go up against someone more skilled or experience than you are and that's what will get you.

I'm so neurotic about keeping my consoles in super good condition so I can't imagine breaking a controller in anger- though I did think about chucking my phone through the window after a particularly rough Gaelic lesson in Duolingo, lol.
I notice that when I start to struggle and get frustrated in games, I start to get a headache and become a bit motion sick. Usually that's only a problem for me in first-person games (I prepare for playing DOOM the way one might prepare for combating seasickness while deep-sea fishing) but when stress and fatigue come into play that's when I get woozy. At that point I always stop playing for the day. I don't want to hork all over my Switch.

the poetic description of swinging your monitor like a mace like the witch king from lord of the rings had me in fits. genuinely not laughing at your expense, but i remember as a send off to the afterlife for busted controllers and mice (the electronic kind!) was crushing them between 2 cinderblocks. i rationalized it that these were inanimate objects, when really that wasn't acceptable regardless.
accepting the fact you have anger and taking steps to address it is a pretty commendable act. coming from a similar upbringing, these types of parents were themselves raised in households where feelings aren't taught to be dealt with and in turn is impressed upon the next generation. learning to deal with anger in a constructive and healthy manner of deescalation is an all to important lesson that can passed up. good on you saberspark. i love your channel.

It's funny: I absolutely had (have) similar rage issues; I broke a dish and a window in highschool--but games weren't much of a trigger for me. For me it's got something to do with feeling trapped by bureaucracy I don't understand, but feel like I should understand, so I suck but also society sucks for making me do this.... In college I tried to subliminate the need for violence with self harm, since I thought it would be less visible --until I got caught and that was awful. Now I have a huge monologue of violent brutal ranting I try not to say out loud, but.... I feel like part of the problem is not having a good outlet?

I was a very angry kid and I think it might have been from major hormone imbalance issues. I threw my phone a lot (back when you could throw it and it would survive without any doubt), broke a LOT of barbies, broke a laptop screen, and broke a motherboard on a different laptop. At that point, I was tired of being angry so I got some help. Now, I try to be a lot more relaxed about that stuff and just avoid toxic games all together. I only play Among Us with friends, I refuse to touch LoL, and MMORPGs have too much time sinks for me to get interested in them.

  • @Shabongobng
    @Shabongobng 2 года назад +4

Dude, I can relate to this.
I always raged with games, still kind of do. I think part of it is because I take it personally, I was always "the gamer" in my group and would beat my friends at split screen. Then I started getting into online games, and I found out I was a big fish in a small pond... I wasn't nearly as good as I thought I was, and I would get pissed when I feel like I got steamrolled by my opponent. And like you said, it doesn't help when people make it personal. It still is kind of an issue to this day. I feel myself getting mad when I play games with my wife and friends, we go on a losing streak and I have to excuse myself because I know I'm not going to be fun to paly with if I just keep raging.
I keep trying to do better though. It helps to do some metacognition, realize that the dopamine rush should come with enjoying something with friends and not from seeing a blue screen instead of a red one.

This brings back memories of my childhood, which was a very long time ago. My brother and I both got started with video games in the 1970s. I have never had gamer rage issues, but he used to get frustrated when a game wasn't going well. He would bang the joystick on the table or on the computer. Somehow, he managed to destroy an Atari 400. Those things are built like tanks and are almost impossible to destroy, so this was an impressive feat. After I got an Atari 800 (which was rather expensive at the time), I had to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn't destroy it. Fortunately, he calmed down as he got older, and nowadays, he is no more likely to get angry and destroy something than I am.

I find that I don't rage with games to such an extreme, but I DO find myself ensnared in them as an addiction. Then I brief moments of clarity where I realize: wait. what am I doing, I'm not having fun. I'm just going through this pattern and grind because it's familiar and I drop the game, sometimes to be returned to later, I'm looking at you Runescape. The same thing happened for League of Legends and Hearthstone. Now a days, it's hard for me to pick up a competitive multiplayer game. I much prefer "local co-op" style games that just pit my friends together or against each other.

I can safely say, without a shred of doubt, that no game has ever enraged me more than Overwatch. I've broken 2 keyboards and mouse. After a 15 game loss streak, the sheer frustration and hatred I feel towards the game and myself is just indescribable. I mostly just kicked the wall next to my bed (only with my shoes because I am weak AF). Actually managed to get a hole over the years too. I think it was around that point I actually stopped doing that but by then puberty had finished setting in and I had less hormone issues to deal with. It may have been the meds I was on that I stopped taking around the time, the fact I went gluten free around that time (I have autism and my mom thinks it helps but I ultimately went gluten-lite because I had a hard time completely eliminating it from my diet) or any combination of the three.

As someone who spends most of his freetime playing games and has played games since he was 3; (I turned 30 in April for a reference) raging has been a thing that still will periodically happen. I remember replaying LoZ Twilight princess and never being able to remember where that last stupid poe spirit was and getting so upset that I deleted my save; and the next time I played it it happened again. I've played many different games across many different genres and consoles (my condolences to anyone building their first gaming pc.) You learn to be aware of what triggers you, and when you should take a break even if you decide not to.
Anger, like every other emotion, is human. It's okay to rage, just be ready to be culpable for that rage.

As a League player, I feel this personally, but thankfully, I've sworn to myself that I'm only playing this with good friends that I was close and comfy with, that brought me to this game in the first time. So we just acted as each other's "safety nets" when the games get too tilting for us, standing up for each other if another player harasses anyone of us, and if the day turned really sour, we just go and play something else to recover. I'm so grateful because I had them, they made the game fun despite all the Ls we took. Playing solo I feel like you don't have that kind of "safety net", and I know that it's really easy to succumb to gamer rage, so I really respect Saber actually manning up and admitting this side to him, it's hard to do. Probably the worst things I’ve done was break my controllers and actually hit myself but not like full force to where I’m leaving marks. Now that was very uncalled for and something I needed to fix right away. I don’t do that anymore, but I won’t lie and say I don’t get upset and mad. But it only happens when I’m playing a game I know I’m good at and I get unlucky or stupid things happen. Especially fighting games lol. We just need to control ourselves and maybe take more breaks or even put down the game.

I also often have moments where I feel the need to vent my anger tho I don't destroy stuff (that matters, I've crushed a lit of empty soda cans through the years). I do sometimes yell or slam my desk, not hard enough to damage but just to hit something. If I don't I hit my head. I have autism so what else do I come up with. Its been a while since I did it cuz I can mostly manage my anger but when I do, how hard I hit depends on how I feel. Not saying I crack my own skull or something, I stop before I get a headache (I also have migraine so a headache is the last I want cuz if I can't get manage it I'll vomit) or give myself a concussion (never happened before, most that'd happen is I get a bit dizzy for a few seconds).

not really gamer rage but I was playing a game called rhythm heaven for the ds and it uses flicks and the touch screen for the entire game, and I didn’t have a stylus, so I usually just used a pencil from my art supplies box. But this time, I accidentally picked a *craft knife*instead of a pencil (it was dark so I didn’t notice) so as soon as I start playing Dj school, i took the line “scratch-o” literally. Made a huge scratch on my 3ds and it is still here to this day (3ds still works somehow)

I've broken both arm rests on a chair with those said games and made a dent in my coffee table I have now from a fighting game. I remember when I first started playing Final Fantasy XI back in 2004, I would do some PvP events known as "Ballista" and other players ganked me so hard that I threw my keyboard on the floor and jumped up and down on top of it until it broke, and swore never to play again. 18 years later and I'm still playing, btw, but I never do PvP anymore. Not that there's many players left to even do it with.
There were other times even before that on console when I'd get so angry at losing or failing a mission in something that I'd actually BITE my controller. I still have teeth marks in the hand grip of one of my PS3 controllers because I actually deformed the plastic.

I used to be quite angry, especially got frustrated with games, the worst was oddly Mario Brothers which is when I got so upset i headbutted my gameboy advanced so hard the screen broke, and it wasn't the first time I had been this upset and done this but one day the gameboy finally gave out.
Lot of that angers gone now, replaced with depression though i've had other outbursts that were often as a result of stewing in the especially negative nights and either someone or myself triggering the right part of my ape brain to push it over the level and i kick a wall or throw something and scream. Looking back i did a lot of violent things but mostly to myself or my "stuff" when i was upset, and not just frustrating game upset but bad mood swings and depression that i didn't even know what to call it, just kind of hated life, but more vehemently than today where I'm just apathetic.

But then they're afraid of house spiders or thunder or something else that's easy to rationalize away, but say "that's different." Only in the sense that it's a different emotion that is irrationally strong. Otherwise, it's very difficult to simply ignore. It might even require therapy.

I never understood gamer rage where you break the controller, TV, etc; and I've played more than 8000 hours worth of MMOs with PvP. I could understand rage quitting, but destruction of materials seems too weird for me.

Yeah...this is one of the biggest reasons why I stopped playing pvp games. I haven't broken anything while pvping, but instead I began to realize how disgustingly competitive I was becoming. Initially pvp was just fun. I was one of the best in those oldschool pvp games like Gunz: The Duel for instance. My name in fact held just a tiny bit of clout in certain circles there too. But the more I felt I was getting better at whatever game I was playing, the more I began to feel like I SHOULD be better than everyone else. And when I came across someone who could stand toe to toe with me, I didn't have that cool-headed competitor's spirit like I used to. Instead of the respect I once gave to my opponent, it became disrespect. I wanted to not just win, but *CONQUER* my opponent. Even caught myself almost teabagging/emote-gloating a few times - something I never normally did.
One time I found myself yelling at a good friend for "targeting me" in TF2. She was playing as a sniper if I remember correctly, and I was on the opposing team. I got heated for no reason, and when she abruptly left the game, I realized how much of a piece of crap I was being and apologized. But the damage was done - she was very, very reluctant to play pvp games with me again after that. Time healed the wound, but we only then just played pvp games on the same team - never against each other. And that was my fault.
The final straw though was when I was playing Overwatch alone without any friends. This was my first mistake. When I play pvp games with friends, their presence helps keep me calm and collected, because we're all having fun/struggling together. But this was with a pub. I didn't know these people, so I didn't care as much about them. Anyways - it was a tough match, and I was getting angrier and angrier. I was so...so angry, that even after my team won, I was still fuming. I gloated as well, yelled at my own team (thankfully not over the mic or in chat. I was just yelling in real life so at least I didn't harrass anyone other than myself) and then once the match ended, I quit Overwatch and sat stewing in my own rage. Then it turned inward. I got depressed and ashamed. I felt like the absolute most terrible person in existence. I freakin' won and yet I was still exploding.
From then on, I stopped playing pvp games. If there's a pvp function in a game I'm playing, I abstain from it as much as possible - which includes Dark Souls/Elden Ring, and so on. I'm too competitive, and I hate what competition transforms me into. And ever since me giving up pvp, I've become a far less angry gamer.

Then talking to the game getting a little louder and that's about when someone might hear and wonder what's going on. That's about when I start trying to calm down and take a break, but if I don't, then I'll say what's making me angry and just angerly growl more. Normally that's when I can hear the controller creaking more and just stop. Because i rather my wallet is broke not my controllers and then both broke.

I usually never broken anything at all when dealing with gamer rage, until the time that my anger issues peaked, even past the need for anger management therapy.
The one time I broke something through gamer rage is the time that I was playing Chibi-Robo Zip lash on my 3DS. I was doing a skateboard level in one of the later areas of the game, and trying to aim for 100% for the game. The jumps I was trying to perform in that level were hard to do, and near-precise. I failed the level so many times, and got my anger to erupt to the point where I threw my 3DS on my mom’s bathroom floor (yes, I was playing the game in the bathroom, who doesn’t?), and the 3DS broke in half. The hinge is cracked, the metal ring is popped outside the hinge, I can’t snap the two halves back together, and I also left a dent on the floor too. Luckily after all that, my 3DS still functions like normal…that is until I did attempt to fix it one day, and snapped the ribbon wire by accident, and the top screen no longer displays anything. The speakers still works, and the bottom screen works just as normal, but the top screen’s display is what’s been f*cked over.
From that point on, I never used my 3DS ever again since then…(and I still haven’t gotten my gold kart frame in Mario kart 7…r.i.p)

    3:07 My brother did a lot too. My Megadrive controllers still rattle and the wall looked like the surface of the moon. I can't say that much about it... I did the same thing recently with my ps4 controller. Wall indentations and craters. Nothing broken yet, except a small tear in the carpet from a thrown chair. I can barely remember doing it. I ended up banning myself from playing first-person shooter games or intense action games when I realized I had a split personality that's triggered by anger, stress or anxiety that I only became aware of a few years ago. I think it's a family thing. My dad, my brother, and even one of my youngest Nephews has the same thing. I was even banned from playing one of my Switch games at work on lunch break, as I was frightening my other colleagues ^ ^;
Happy to say, that listening to Video Game Music is my go to for suppressing my anger levels these days.

I "fought" with one of my sisters a lot when it came to games, but that was mostly just yelling over Mario Party, which even as kids we understood was just a result of how you're supposed to play the game. My youngest sibling, though, failed to understand that and would throw a screaming fit until both of us older kids lost the gamecube whenever picking up a controller and mashing random buttons didn't reward her with victory.

My sister and I fought a ton and had serious competition issues--so we just automatically had extremely strict house rules without even discussing it about always targeting the NPCs and sharing loot or whatever in multiplayer games, because we knew that we'd murder each other otherwise. And when it came to sharing a single player one, we had no issues taking turns. Hell, when we played Shadow of the Colossus, we had fun taking turns taking down a Colossi.
Besides, we knew damn well that if a game or controller ever broke, it was us that had to buy a new one with our own money. And since we're all frugal, we made those things last :P.

My gamer rage moments started when I was pretty young, my dad was a rageful gamer, he once broke a PS2 over his knee cuz a game pissed him off, so as you can tell, I was raised in an environment where that was normal. My worst moment I think was Super Smash Bros Brawl, I got to the point of unlocking Lucario. That fight made me throw my Wiimote from the top bunk into the door. Door got a dent in it from the impact, and the Wiimote doesn't work anymore. Asshole to admit that was back in 2017, so... Not too long ago. The most aggressive I have become at other players has to be Destiny. This was once eagain back in the same year, I was shouting so loud like an idiot at thes people who couldn't hear me. I can luckily say that I have never broken an expensive controller or system out of gamer rage, and recently, if a game makes me angry, I just close whatever I'm playing, and come back later. Despite what my brother likes to say, I don't break PS4 controllers out of anger, it's literally just out of use. I will use controllers to death. Which I'm sure could be fixed really fast, if I knew what I was doing.

    FINALLY, I'M NOT ALONE.
i mean i definitely haven't lost $3000 to my baby gamer rage yet, but i've had to set strict boundaries on what games i play because if i played them, shit will break, and my mental health with degrade. difficult games (dark souls & elden ring) and pvp games (with bots on easy-normal difficulty they're fine) are an absolute no-go for me. plus, i have a processing disorder that messes with the way i think while playing games. i just go unga-bunga on most of them. sucks that i have to miss out on such phenomenal experiences, but it's really for the better of my mental health. i was always more of a watcher than a player as a kid anyway.
most expensive thing i broke was a $200 LED TV to losing a really, really close boss fight in octopath traveler (that game's difficulty RAMPS UP after a certain point. i probably just didn't grind enough or get good enough gear.) threw my 8bitdo controller at what had to been like 10 feet per second right at the TV and cracked it beyond repair. i've luckily never had rage bad enough to break hardware as expensive as a whole console or PC, but most casualties have definitely included controllers, at least one keyboard and mouse, and a few game discs even.
i only just recently decided to start going to anger management classes about a month and a half ago, and i've learned a lot of lessons and values i should have as a teenager. it won't give me the courage to try to play difficult singleplayer or pvp games again, but it will help me in other parts of life. most important thing to realize is: it's just a game.
so yeah, it was kinda surprising to see this video.

lol, had to laugh when you mentioned Halo 3. That game made me rage SO goddamn hard back in the day, like no other game. Nice video, though I dislike the fact that you call stuff like this "anger issues", these aren't any sort of "issues", it's just being angry and/or frustrated at something, that's perfectly normal.
