    One of my many rabbit holes, in years gone by, has led to this video! I hope that scratching the tip of the iceberg, that is the genus name change within our orchid hobby, will spark your interest to find more answers of why the genus names of our orchids 'keep changing', or change back to the original genus id! My example of The Taxonomic Separation of the genera Prosthechea & Encyclia, applies across the board as to what the biologists are looking for to determine similarities or differences in our orchids, all the way down to... flavonoid crystals! Hi Nina, loved this vid and your enthusiasm for Prosthechea orchids. I have had Prosthechea Green Hornet for almost 8 years and I have to tell you that it has been such a reliable bloomer. Love everything about this orchid; it’s very easy going, very reliable, and takes just about anything you throw at it! It is an orchid I recommend to anyone who wishes to branch out into the orchid world away from Phalaenopsis Orchids. Hope you are doing well, stay safe, and have a great day! 💚

      Holly, hi 😍💐 I cannot over emphasise just how grateful I am for your support and your comment. 🙏🏼 it is really motivating. I put out many videos that I have no idea will help anyone and sometimes second guess what I am doing here, but then, I think of a person who I have no idea exists, may need a video like this and post it. I am so so grateful to you for letting me know that this and other videos are helpful and that you feel you can rely on coming to the channel for information that is helpful. Staring off the new year with a bang, Holly 🥳🥳 you are going to love growing the prosthechea genus! If there ever was a rewarding genus that comes in the form of a species, is vigorous, has fragrant blooms, this is one of those. Amazing! I celebrate with you 🎉 I did have a good Christmas and, so far, the New Year is COLD and icky! But, I am hopeful to bring the orchids through these coming months and then 'we can all breathe a little easier' 😊 Wishing you a wonderful 2024, and sincerely hope that your holidays were peaceful and memorable! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      HI Maria 😍💐 prosthecheas are a fabulous genus. So vigorous, all are fragrant and for a species very happy growers 👍🏼 I am very partial to white with green blooms, or cream with green, and all the ones in this video, also sparkle in the sun! Just magical 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching this video and I am going to keep my fingers crossed that soon you will be able to experience this genus for yourself. I have to take the garciana alba apart this season ... she has outgrown her huge pot within 2 years of being in it. It going to be messy, but needs must if she is to grow nicely moving forward!! They change the name to confuse even more the already confused newbies ! 😂 Recently, I’ve bought an Encyclia Baculus but I found pretty much different names for it , and very less care info . So , me , being already confused about what I bought , I’m getting confused in her care too , repot or not to repot etc . Looks like radiata , but also like Garciana to me , or I don’t know which one 😂 Love your “straight to the point “ videos and your familiar voice .

What I wrote was: I am glad that you found this video because the care for your baculus should be exactly the same as for any prosthechea. Once they get settled in, they go into beast mode 🤪 wonderful genus, that makes orchid growing fun! And you have yourself a beauty there because the combination of all things prosthechea like cochleata, garciana and radiata in a single bloom, is amazing 😍 nice find there!! Enjoy growing that orchid and the fragrance! Thank you so much for watching, for your positive and kind feedback, lovely lady! Hope you are having a wonderful day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids I try to watch as many of your videos because your way of explaining everything is much understandable for me . And indeed have that elegant sweet powdery fragrance. I got it already bloomed and the flowers has fallen on one stem and start a new growth, few centimetres only . I think is the best time to repot it , as it is still in the nursery pot in sphagnum moss and little bark mix .

    Two weeks ago, I purchased the Epicyclia Serena O'Neill (Hawaiian or Central America Hybrid?) with my latest orchid haul. The green flowers with white/pink lip have a honey fragrance.
    I'm thinking about trying a mix of coconut husk and bark since they like to stay moist. Not sure if I'll use a terracotta pot or plastic pot. The canes on this one are huge.
    12:24 Some people think the leaf tip die back on these types of plants is caused by over fertilization, but I've also heard of plants having this problem when the humidity is low. (16:20)
    I'm going to care for it like a cattleya with high light and warm/hot temperatures.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  5 месяцев назад +3

      HI Joe 😍💐 its good to see you again! ooohhh nice!! Given the right conditions, that orchid can bloom twice within a 12 month period 👍🏼 its probably both Hawaiian and Central American Hybrid because of where it was bred and the parentage that comes from Central America. Over fertilizing these hungry orchids is really hard to do because they are so vigorous, even if as in my case, they are not as large as what you have. Mine grow more than 4 new growths / year, the garciana is always chucking out 50-60 new growths / year which I struggle to keep up with. So, I would say that humidity is the main reason that leaf tips will go brown. You have a great care plan set for her. They LOVE their high light 👍🏼 wish you happy growing and enjoy that fragrance!! Thank you so much for watching, Joe 🫶🏼 hope you had a great weekend ❤️🌸

    "why do they change orchid names"
    to be annoying? 🤪
    Now I think the winner in root growth, of any orchid, are some of the plants in the Zygopetalum tribe. I have to address my Warchlerhyncha (syn Chondranthes) Amazing Andrea. That one was just potted four months ago, the pot is full, there are roots not even in the pot and the plant has lifted itself 3 cm. There was plenty of room for roots when I potted it, not anymore. Same goes for Huntleya and Pescatoria, they just produce masses of chunky roots, best practice is to "overpot" them or you'll be repotting them repeatedly.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +2

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! The annoying part is, that, I am asking the wrong questions, clearly, because I am still in rabbit holes that I have not had answers for, sooo.... I am still looking for information on genus names and their origin etc etc. I hate not being able to type in a simple search without being bombarded by rubbish, that has nothing to do with the indepth information I am looking for. And thank you, for that! 😅 Once upon a time, I grew orchids, got them to bloom (or not) enjoyed the fragrance (or not) and moved on to the next one. Since you identified all the mislabelled orchids back in the day, I have been looking for more and more in depth information, but it seems to be buried in the depths of the orchid scrolls, not readily available for the likes of me 😠 root growth winner, I have to agree with you on the Zygo tribe, one could add cymbidiums to the mix, but when it comes to the classic fine rooted species orchids, that could be considered reluctant root growers, these guys take the prize! imo 😬 I hope your day was fabulous, Michael! That your weekend, day 1, set the pace for the weekend, day 2! Thank you so much for watching ❤️🌸

      Robert, hi 😍💐 these name changes had me throwing my hands up in the air, back in the day! I appreciated all the corrections, but it made me question the seriousness of the nurseries that they would mislabel orchids that they put up for sale 💆🏼‍♀️😠 I had a lot of mislabelled orchids, and then... my own tags, to do all over again! 😤 that is when I had to find out the why, and it was the cochleata that started those rabbit holes, some of which I have as yet to come up for air for 😝 If I were a Japanese Samurai Orchid collector and my precious pricey Neofinetia is now called a Vanda, I would tell them to 'stuff it'! Imagine buying one of those highly priced ones, and now its a Vanda? Forget it!! 😠 Day was busy with pretending to be Cinderella....looks as if I did nothing! Dogs, and bird... I'll be danged! I started editing a video before doing the RUclipsy things, but... my head is not in it, so, I will finish that video tomorrow. Methinks, a G & T and bed will make a huge difference and tomorrow we do it all again! Thank you for being my Wingman, Robert, thank you for sharing this video 😘 hope you are having a fun day with the God kiddos today!! Thank you so much for this video. I got a Cochliata “Pepe” earlier this year and all your information is totally accurate. One thing you didn’t mention and that I noticed with my plant is that it is a “sequential” bloomer. Could it be because it’s still a small plant? When I purchased it, it only had one spike and a few months after that spike stopped blooming, I had 2 new ones but only one flower at a time on each spike for, maybe, a total of 6 or 7 flowers on each spike. And, yes, the fragrance is divine😍

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +2

      Hi BiBiche 🥰💐 thank YOU so much for watching, and for adding additional information! I love it and appreciate it! It is possible that some are sequential bloomers. Did the spikes come out of the same apex as where the older spike grew? If so, that is very interesting, indeed! I have not seen that before. It could be that because the orchid is young, it is doing this as a form of first time blooming abnormality, or..... your Pepe is just a happy bloomer and you can expect more of the same on the next blooming, which would be awesome! 👍🏼 None of my prosthecheas are sequential bloomers, unfortunately. To have that fragrance around over an extended period of time is not a bad thing 😅 thank you so much for watching and, once again, thank you for adding that tidbit of information 👍🏼👍🏼 have a fabulous day 🌸

    🦒🙋‍♀🙌💖Well, I have humidity to spare, if you want some 😬🤣🤣 You can call me crazy 🥴 but I like to explore the intricacies of taxonomy and learn the whys. I have a hard time memorizing most of it, though. However, the essencial remains. We are so lucky to have all the information at hand everytime we need it, without having to go to the library. That is what I used to do in the old days although not always successful as the library in my small town is very limited when it comes to botany. Thanks for the link, I will most certainly read the article. I love chubby pseudobulbs and Prosthechea sure take the prize. Happy saturday to you and yours🥰😍😍🤗Enjoy your lovely weather. Yours and mine combined would be super, humidity on one side + warmth on the other 🤔🤔 but then again maybe not, nature knows best 🤣🤣

      FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin!! How great would that be if we could divvy up the excess of one and split it with the excess of the other 👍🏼 I am surprised that you are having that kind of a weather front. There must be warm colliding with the cold Atlantic somewhere and it has created a 'dome' of sorts over you? It makes no sense for this time of year 😠 I hated the library at my school. I never went to a library in Mombasa, so I would not know how that was, but at school... anyway, I had difficulty sitting still and being quiet! But, I still wish I knew how to ask the right questions to get the answers I want, because I am still not done with things that I want to know, but if I don't ask properly, I get suggestions that are just generic mumbo jumbo! 💆🏼‍♀️ Green apple pseudobulbs! YUM! thank you so much for taking time to watch, so very much appreciated, amiga mia!! I was Cinderella again today... started to edit a video just now, but am not 'feeling it' so, mañana I will try to get more done with a fresher mind. @@NinjaOrchids Good morning🙋 dear Nina. You are right, right questions are not always easy to think of, we waste a lot of time. I very often go to Google scholar to get more info and I end up reading thesis 😅 Unfortunately there aren't enough studies on orchids, at least not as many as with other plants. One thing I have looked for and never could find any answer: are plants sensitive to UVA or UVB or UVC rays, do they get different benefits from each one the same way our bodies do, would they know the differance (apart from the burning, of course)? Another thing, as UVB rays are blocked by glass and do not provide us humans with same benefits, would there be a differance with plants too? I have been researching for that for years but it might be a non issue because no answer. Or, maybe I am asking the wrong questions 😂🤣

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 года назад +3

      EXACTLY!!! Those are the kinds of rabbit holes that drive me mad! There has to be information out there providing specific answers.... it cannot be that no one has a conclusion to these questions, with all that is out there! It has to be an issue of sorts, to at least have some conclusions... where on earth / how on earth does one google those questions without getting the 'garbage' blogs 😠

    Hi Nina, what a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing all your research. I've watched this video a few times now trying to get it all straight in my mind. Name changes 🙄 I have an Encyclia cordigera and a Prosthechea radiata. My question now pertains to yellowish green leaves on my Prosthechea radiata that came to me with the light green leaves. I'm assuming it was because it was in very high light, more than needed to get this to bloom. It is in bloom now with a second spike following. The pseudobulbs and leaves are a bit better in my care and again readjusted it's growing spot for less light. My question is this: Will the already yellowish green leaves deepen in colour in time or will they remain as they are until they die? I couldn't find anything online that specifically answer this question. Impatient minds want to know NOW. 😉😂 Thanks again Nina, enjoy your beautiful self and orchids. 🙏❤😊

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Год назад +3

      HI Robi 😍💐 thank you for your feedback on this video, I really appreciate it 🤗 The color of the leaves will green up when the orchid has been exposed to less light for at least 3 months. IF it is not a deficiency...I have to assume that you are fertilizing enough... not knowing how large your orchid is, if the yellow leaves are on the pseudobulbs that are in spike or on older ones. If on older ones, then they are in the process of being absorbed and won't green up, but eventually fall off, which is normal after several years of holding their own on the older pseudobulbs. My radiata, which was a rootless division that managed to bloom and is now completely rooted in, has not dropped any of the leaves it came with, despite no roots and going through the process of blooming, while also growing a new growth. So, if you are unsure here is the link to the orchid details form 👉🏼 cutt.ly/3XbDtKg 👈🏼 and lets have a look 👀🤗 thank you so much for watching, Robi! Hope your day was awesome 🌸

      I forgot about the questionnaire thing that makes your answering question way more timely and accurate for growing conditions etc. My apologies Nina, I'll try to remember in future. You answered my question as needed since the yellowish green leaves are on newer pseudobulbs and my fertilizer is at 300ppm except when flushing or giving it a Kelpac/Kelpmax soak. The previous grower is experienced so I was assuming the light was on the too high end of tolerance for these. I'll watch over the next for months to see if there are changes to the present leaves and the new growths that follow after blooming. Thanks again for your time. Have a beauty day Nina! 🙏💖😊

    Soooo, I have been given a prosthecea cochleata that had no viable roots (nice eh? lol). I have put the separate pieces on moist sphagnum moss in a tall container to add humidity. Is this the best way to root this orchid? I have zero experience with this variety and would really like your input.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  6 месяцев назад +2

      😍 Hi Kate 💐 Well, congratulations on your newcomer!! 🥳 🥳 can you tell me if your orchid has any new growths starting? If so, what size are they? Mine are currently not growing any new growths, and that is why I need to know if your's is, what stage they are at. How many pseudobulbs does your cochleata have? What you have decided to do is always a good way of getting roots to grow, however, be careful with how high the humidity is around the leaves. While they prefer high humidity, if they don't have airflow, they will be prone to fungi spotting. Take into consideration that, if your orchid is growing new growths, they are also quick to rot at the base without sufficient airflow. Your roots will grow on new growths fastest once they have reached approx. 2 inches. Thankfully, that is a very quick time to get new roots on a rootless orchid as long as there are enough pseudobulbs to provide energy. Thankfully, this orchid also have the capacity to branch on older roots, in the event that there are any single viable roots at all. You say there are none, so that is a shame, but keep the roots, there may be a few that will magically resurrect. Fortunately, prosthecheas are vigorous orchids and with that, forgiving. Even if your pseudobulbs shrivel, they will plump up again, to a degree, once a new root system starts to do it's job. They are also generous on the root front... Let me know what stage your orchid is at and if I can help out further. Meanwhile, thank you for watching! Truly appreciate the support! Hope your Saturday is going beautifully for you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids I tried to add photos - but no luck. As I said I'm a newby here on youtube. They are individual pseudobulbs and each of them has new growth points...wish I could send photos. Is this description at all helpful?

      @@NinjaOrchids Ok! Thanks so much for this! I have laid the pseudobulbs on a moist bed of moss with the leaves not on moss, so lots of airflow. Should I cover the pseudobulbs with the moss or not? There are 2cm growing points coming from the base, but absolutely no roots. Would aloe vera be of any use to get roots started?

      @@Kanvil you are very welcome! No, best not to cover the pseudobulbs. Humidity yes, but not too much. While tough orchids, the new growths are somewhat delicate. If you want to semi cover the tray or container you have your pseudobulbs in, then you are good to go. I do not use aloe vera, I have heard that it works, but it also has an affinity to cause fungi / mould to develop

    Where do these names come from? They just roll off your tongue.

      Hi Dianne 😍💐 that is such a good question, and I am still, after all these years, trying to get a 'straight' answer from the books! Sometimes it is the shape of the bloom (eg cochleata looks like a little shell / cockle) other times, it comes from the person that discovered the variety, or the species and then they make it sound like latin, by adding 'ii' at the end or 'ae' etc etc. The only straight answer for the Cattleya genus is, because of the botanist that brought the first cattleya to England, and then they named all orchids that had the same structure and bloom shape after Mr. Cattleya, seeing as all orchids, back in that day were classified as Epidendrum. BUT... where did Rhynco come from, or Vanda or ... well, the list is endless. I really really would like to get to the bottom of how the genus were determined after the Cattleya example. 👍🏼 its something that is not exactly bugging me, but... why did someone call a Laelia, laelia... I mean, it is a pretty name, but... yeah!! I will let everyone know if I find out the how behind certain genus names, as and when I do. p.s.: many rupicolous laelias were first called Hoffmannseggella after the German botanist Johann Centurius Hoffmann, Count of Hoffmannsegg ... they were classified differently prior to him getting them from Brazil, and he took it upon himself to create the genus, why? I have no idea, maybe an ego thing. He even has a species of Rushpeas named after him, Hoffmannseggia 😅 I have practiced the names of my orchids for years. And typing in searches to get to the bottom of all the questions I have ... ad infinitum! 😅 thank you so much for watching, Dianne!! I hope you had a fabulous day and,.... I will keep on digging and eventually put out a video with the genus that I do have answers for 👍🏼👍🏼

      Thank you, Dianne!! On other topics, when asked, I may look like a deer in headlights, but when it comes to orchids... 😅 thank you for being so encouraging 🤗
