Hi Dani! Yes, make a video on the ones you would repurchase!
"...or you grew up with a teacher, or you are a writer...or you had pens..."
LOL! Miss Danni. On ink- scented trauma.🤣
Lmao
haha!! so true ~ xoxo L.
I loved this video, Dani; hearing about the pros and cons of various orchids in your collection me rethink my own. I only started collecting last October and now I've over 100!! Orchids are obsessive to me, but I've got to find a limit to my buying. Haha - famous last words!
Same problem here ;-)
I second you both
You are so lucky to have the money to buy so many orchids. I started 3 years ago and have about 17 only.
Yes, I want to see that video. It’s nice to see what others like and don’t like compared to my own tastes. :)
Scent is so subjective! My monnierara millennium magic just bloomed for the first time and I was so excited for the "pepper" scent. Sadly....I just smelled wet cut grass. It was pleasant and fresh smelling, but not what I had envisioned.
My boyfriend smelled pepper though.
Then my dendeobium sweet little scent just bloomed for the first time. The internet said it would smell like raspberries. It did...but it also smelled like mothballs. So grandma's old sweater and spilled raspberry jam. 😂
Fun video, Dani! I would appreciate a video on your faves, the ones you would repurchase! Thanks!
I love the coelogyne cristata. 😍😍😍
Lol...childhood memories of horse manure...lol. ( encyclia cocliata ) That was very informative for me, my son pointed to a photo of that flower and said that he liked it. I would have bought it not knowing the scent. 🌹 have a great day.
I love the orchids which are small, fragrant, beautiful. And easy to care and eary to grow.
I have been in this situation where I have orchids that smell totally different than what people in the internet described, I had a Phal who supposedly have "citrus/peppery" smell, but for me smells like Ethylene or hot Cellophane plastic, and I have a Miltassia that smells like fresh corn. Well, maybe that would be an interesting topic for someday like "the weirdest smell in orchids" or something like that.
So the give-away will exclusively be orchids that smell like horse poop?
hahaha
thx for the info. i almost buy a few of them, i also love the one with sweet fragrant.
Love your videos. I am a terrible plant mom. I kill everything. My sweet husband bought me a phal last year and that's when I found your videos. She is still alive and about to rebloom! I followed your video about cutting bloom spikes back at the end of blooming to possibly force a rebloom. She had 2 flower spikes and I cut both back. One died off but the other remained. Months later I noticed one of those bumps swelling! I now have a short spike off the original and flower buds are forming! Thank you. :)
Thank you so much for the giggles! 😂 I watch comedy shows and movies, but there is nothing like someone who throws a laugh when we aren't expecting one when learning a new subject!
I am trying to learn what kind f light and amount of water to keep my orchids alive. I have a couple of malinopsis (at least that is what the tag said) and one has big, smooth pseudobulbs, where the other one has tough wrinkly pseudobulbs. How do I tell when they need water? I think I am over watering. They are currently planted in soil. Can I transfer them to Leca? Thank you so much for doing these videos. I look forward to them all the time! 😁
Surprised about your green hornet. Mine is sickly sweet and attracts ants. Like a super sweet honey scent. I have to keep it indoors when it blooms. I’d say try another. It’s a very reliable windowsill bloomer.
I love your videos, first post!
I would love to see more of this type of video!
I'm amazed by how you can smell an orchid and instantly relate it to another scent
I think the green hornet differs a lot in smell because mine smells like honey and after watching this video I asked a few people to smell it and everyone so far agreed with me ❤️
Yes, the orchids you would always buy again (or can't live without) would be a fun video.
"...or you had pens..." OMG I'm laughing so hard. 😂
Very honest, which I like.🙂👍
I really want the last one, love the foillage.
Ugh, I argue with my mom all the time about that weird green yellow color! I gave her a dwarf cymbidium of that color cause it just felt like a waste at times.........Would love to see a vid of the ones you'd buy over and over again! You're inspiring.
Hi! What is the spotting on the green hornet? (Old video)
I'd love that list of orchids you'd repurchase all over again
I love this video ,gives me a big laugh😁
Makes me wonder why some purchase and grow stinky bulbophyllum when they say some smells rotten flesh! There must be something special about them. Love sweet scented orchids as well! Yes..would love a video of orchids you’ll repurchase over and over again.:)
Hey Daniela, when are you going to do a greenhouse video? You said you were working on rearranging the setup but never did a video on it. Would live to see the changes in your greenhouse and terrace of course. Your terrace reminds me of the ones I remember PR having as a child.
growing up on a farm is nice, but also a lot of work most days my family and I worked from sun up to sun down, well if we werent in school:-) so for me i always wished to not live on a farm as a kid LOL. I love your videos Danny keep it up.
A lot of the Orchids you don't like I love and definitely the Vanda Orchids purple is amazing but I do like the lime green and the orchid with the speckled bloom is so pretty,
I already put the Encyclia Radiata in my list and will buy it. And now just because “smell like horse” (LOL), so I deleted it right away. Thank you for information, Danny. That’s help me a lot.
I love it![the 1st one]
This mislabeled Fragrans (not!) looks like a tiny owl inside. So cute!
poor girl. for orchids you will not buy again... wow... you have taken excellent care of them... you amazing
I love the Psychopsis - and orange, especially brownish orange, is at bottom of my colour preference list (just above russet, a colour I detest). But the shape of the Psychopsis flower is just so wonderful.
Would love the idea of orchids that you would repurchase anytime. :) I feel I'm a bit odd, I do love the flowers, but there must be something in their leaves or pseudobulbs as well for me to purchase at all. So I have odd love towards big phalaenopsis leaves (bigger the better), but I use them for decorative purpose. I also love the thick canes on dend. Nobile(?).. well those hybrids. Could stare them infinity.
Hi Dani, I really enjoyed this video and would love another one similar, with orchids you WOULD purchase again. I had a Prosthechea ( Encyclia) Green Hornet that I loved because of the smell. I always thought it smelled quite strongly of “sweaty horse,” and I should know because I had horses growing up. It brought back WONDERFUL memories for me. I lost it (long story), and would not repurchase it because I constantly had problems with bad spotting on the leaves that would spread. It especially attacked the new leaves when they formed, and destroyed them. I never was able to control the problem. Very frustrating! So that’s my story.
Laurie G.hi. if. You. Don't. Want it and Di said to give them I love love them ♡♡
Thanks!!!
You could also do a 'orchid regrets' video, this was one in a way. I'd love a horse-anything smelling orchid hahahahahaha
anyway, I'd say all the orchids I wouldn't repurchase are the ones that don't work in my climate but i wanted to try and grow, since I live in the costarricense highlands my choice of orchids to grow have to be intermediate to cool growing, so Cymbidiums, Pahpiopedilum, Encyclias, Epidendrum and such do well, Cattleyas and Oncidiums not always, and most Psicopsis, Vandas and Phaelenopsis do very poorly outdoors. Very interesting to see your reasoning on wether or not orchids are worth keeping or purchasing.
Hi There Dani,
I’ve just recently got into orchids, I adore them.
I’ve not had any luck with them. I’ve had several Phaniopsis but they look great when I buy them (roots visible in the pot look wonderful) but within a week or so end up palliative from stem rot. I’ve tried all of your suggestions without luck.
I’ve gotten them and take them home to repot and there are vile, oasis type material plugs in plastic “cages”. I’m disabled so have very few spare dollars and it takes me a while to save up enough for even the phalinopsis(?) and is a crushing blow when I loose them or any of my houseplants for that matter. Am I imagining things or have you found this to be true?
You mention giveaways in this video and I was wondering how to enter. I absolutely love how you cover all bases in a way that those of us who are unfamiliar with orchid life can understand. For me, that is the best!!!
Thank you for your time making the videos, it is so very appreciated 👍🥰
I have a prostechea cochleata and does not smell at all :-/ and also the encyclia that I have (wich looks the same as yours) have a delicious fragrance, like lime and lavender.
Im shocked PSYCHOPSIS in on your list!
That is one of my fav orchids.
Oh well. To each their own. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
lol loved hearing this video. it's funny I think some orchids smell like poop too but ink? I didn't know ink could be smelled by people lol
I can’t see any description! Where is it?
Maybe I don't know where to look but I thought I heard that the list of orchids was going to be posted.
I thought i was crazy cause one of my catts smelled faintly like maneuer. ..after a few days it became stronger and stronger and it did have floral notes, but also a touch of....yea. Something
Please tell us where you purchase your orchids, and why. Can you do that?
I love the yellow Vanda...
If you have the climate to keep the Coelogyne Cristata outside, it's an amazing bloomer. No fragance. But the blooms can fill the pot all around to the point you hardly see the leaves. And they last.
But inside the home... yeahhh, try another coelogyne.
Yellow/green flowers are my weakness. The greener the better.
I bought quite a few oncidiuns because of their scent. Now I feel a little disappointed when I look at the phals.
My miltonia (white with red/pink) died and now I feel conflicted...
If I see it again, will I buy it? The leaves on their own are not to my taste. Flowers are pretty but the leaves... To me, those leaves were even less interesting than the different coelogynes. The other miltonias/oncidiuns are a little more interesting when they are just leaves. That one wasn't. And I don't know what killed it. It just gave up on me one fine day. After it had started to show new growth to add insult to injury.
But the flowers are pretty. Maybe if the one for sale has enough bulbs to inspire some confidence?
I can't help but keep staring at the leaves of the "green hornet" (a.k.a horse poop odour orchid). Are the leaves meant to be like that or is there a virus through it since i can see rings and splotches as the light shines through the leaves?
If you mean on the old footage, that is spider mite damage (with secondary infection) , very worying if you ever see it on an orchid :(
Hi Danny. If you have an emoji of rolling in the floor (😂) please send. No Osmoglossum bc smell of ink ?? Did someone dip your pony tails in the ink jar too ??, LOL.
Gosh horse poop, I have experience of cow poop from garden centers selling cow manure, same ?
“ OFF WITH YOUR HEADS !!!” Thanks for making another fun vid.
Your Psychopsis was so huge and brightly colored! Shame it died.
All I find for sale are the alba form of the Kalihi Green Valley (have it, beautiful, in bloom or in bud non stop.) or some no-ID hybrid that blooms generously but with dull colors, brown and yellow and flowers on the smaller side.
I would definitely be interested in a video on orchids you would love to repurchase :)
Horse poop killed me 🤣
Dani,
Do you have issues with stables and horse poop? LOL - just joking! Interesting how specific scents can bring back good and bad memories. Good video! I agree with you - if I don't like an orchid I give it away. I only have room for those that I really love.
Interested in something on Rhynchostylis. I have a couple that just aren't "doing anything". It is like they just exist.
Always appreciate your videos.
would do video on orchid that smells like a rose , a gardenia, a lemon ..etc
Great video ... I love the smell of horse poop and ink
I have one mini phal that smells like rotten wood. First time I repot the orchid because I was sure something was rotting in the pot. But noup, she was just stinky one xD
Green hornet does not smell like horse poop. It smells like beeswax candles. ;(
I'm very interesting in this type of video!
make an update of all the orchids bought on your birthday!
I have a LOT of P. cochleata... if you tell me how to send it from Mexico, let me know and I can send you a division.
💕❤️💞💋😘 I enjoyed your video
Do think of me in your give a ways even thou am so far away in Jamaica
The third orchid does not look like Prosthecea radiata. The sepals and petals are too long.
Prosthechea cochleata and radiata smells like synthetic vanilla and Brassia verrucosa smells like homemade mayonnaise Prosthechea citrina and Euchile(Encyclia or Protoschea i don't freaking now) karwinskii are freaking fantastic is a citric smell that fills your home.
The Encyclia Cochleata has been renamed according to AOS to Prosthechea Cochleata
I would not repurchase Oncidium Sherry Baby. It is so hyped that I’ve give it a go, but it is big, flowers are nice but very small, the flower spike is soo long and it is occupying a lot of space and the smell..so sweet, but not for my buds, doesn’t smell like chocolate in my oppion..more like a vanilla pudding 😂
haha, an orchid that smells like horse poop :D no thanks!
Danny whats a good way to promote root growth of vandas?
Also back to topic, den. Phalaenopsis have left me always wanting more. Probably wouldn’t purchase another one of those.
B 95 personally for me I bought a humidifier for my nepethes but my vandas are in the same growth space and they really started shouting out new roots, specially my species phals and catts
I have one too, the thing is I don’t know what setting to leave it on. Either is not enough or theres too much and my grow room is all foggy.
An orchid that smells like horse poop eh? Yuck, no thank you! I have 2 x Coelogyne Cristata's that I purchased from two different suppliers. One is fragrant and the other is not. The fragrant one is nothing to write home about in my opinion...floral but with a spicy layer that doesn't much appeal to me, so don't worry Dani..you aren't missing much:)
hahaha did not know there were horse poop 💩 scented orchids I thought only stapelias had those magic scents 😅 😆
Yes, which orchids would you repurchase?
Please let me know, your top 3 orchids, that you love the most,
Thanks cutie pie.............!!!
You make my day with our videos............!!!
I have a cymbidium orchid that low key kinda smells like cat pee...✌️😗 She has pretty flowers, but it’s just a really weird smell, one of those smells where it’s not TERRIBLE but you don’t like it 🙈🌱🤷🏼♀️
I wouldn't mind a orchid 🌸that smells like horse apples, I've owned horses so it wouldn't bug me. It just be knda weird! I do tho have a totally gorgeous sented phal... that smells like canned dog food 😕!!! Thankfully its not strong smelling!!
I wanted a pony for Christmas one year. My mom asked where Santa could get one. I told her Sears, because Sears advertised they had everything! No pony. Sigh.
Green hornet what a disappointment even though it bloomed i was unhappy no smell
Giving all the stinky orchids away lol...
Makes me kinda sad that the beautiful gift flower that the plant sent out to you is not loved😟😟😟
Horse poop 🤦🏻♀️ lol
this is not related to an orchid u wouldn’t buy again, but u should look at dendrobium pendulum the pseudobulbs r SOOO COOL in addition to the beautiful flowers i think u can get it on andy’s orchids
