    I have grown phalaenopsis orchids for quite some time. For some reason I was never very interested in the cattleyas. Recently I learned that some are FRAGRANT, and that piqued my interest! I bought my first one yesterday, don't know the color or type because it was a discount at a hardware store, meaning it was finished blooming! Otherwise it looks healthy. But looking at all the varieties in your video, I think I am falling in love! LOL Your videos are just great! I just subscribed, and thank you!!!

    I love your honesty, not everyone who does a video will tell you how it is, I have a few Cattleyas in my small collection, but as you said for some of us the thrill is to be surpised with the bloom, so we don't mind the greenery, very good video.

    I appreciate your pros and the only con I agree with is the old canes looking a little scruffy. I have overcome the lack of cascade with Cattlyeas because the blooms are so lovely. I have just begun collecting and appreciating Cattleya orchids....thank you!

    Hi Danny. Bought my first non phal orchid last month and it was the Lc Rojo valentine from an orchid show here in the states. When I took it home to look up, google promptly brought me to yours truly from a vid four years ago. Thanks for the info and will give it a nice dose of outside sunning (with sun tan lotion?) during the summer. Too bad mines in non fragrant, but the color is amazing. A cluster of red little blooms with reddish and orangie speckled lip. Maybe a whist of Channel will help 😬 ??

    I just purchased my first Catt the other day. Very excited, I love their blooms. the gentleman told Me it will be a year before I see a bloom. It is in a green nursery pot so I was unable to see the roots. Should I repot it into a clear orchid pot? You mentioned in your video problems with Catt roots Thank you for these videos they are very helpful as I am new to the orchid hobby. 💚💚🌺

    • @brokenkeys1112
      @brokenkeys1112 6 лет назад +6

      Species means that it is not a mix orchid different orchids, hybrids are orchids that are bred together to create an orchid usually hybrids are made to with stand different climates or for displaying purposes like flowers and specimens are orchids that are old and huge( depends on species because miniature specimens don’t get as big as a normal orchid).

    Hi Danni, I love your video explanation on the pros and cons of orchid, keep up with the awesome work. My question is that you were saying not to move your Cattleya when in bloom or getting ready to bloom does that include watering? My set up I have to remove them from their location to water but then I put them right back in the exact same spot as they were before watering? I also would like the name of the red Cattleya on the cover image.

      I received two den-phals as extras when I ordered two Vandas. I had no idea what I was doing and just stuck them in my repotme phal mix and they have thrived! I got a new kitten that would watch me water them and decided she wanted to knock them over. She must have unpotted them 5 times each before I moved them to a shelf. One's roots died away but she left me with a keiki that once removed, is thriving! The other is putting out it's second growth and has amazing roots. They say phals are the easiest but in my South Texas, humid climate, it seems Vandas, den-phals and Cattleyas are MUCH easier in the home. I've lost more phals than I want to admit....but never a Vanda or Den-phal...I have a Cattleya Maxima Coerulea that is THRIVING....and a no root Cattleya that looks ok, and I'm praying will grow new roots. 🤞🙏

    After growing cattleya orchids without getting them to bloom I finally got one to bloom for me. She was in bloom when I got her.
    She was always in bloom sometime around Christmas and lasted well into January. But at last I felt like I needed to separate her and I wasn't successful. After all the preparation of my cutting tools she developed a virus and I had to destroy her. A very sad day for me.

    About Cattleyas. You say they're bright light orchids, and can't be grown in Phalaenopsis-type light. Now, I live above the arctic circle, and my window recieves a lot of light during late spring/summer/early autumn, because we have midnight sun here and it faces west. However, we also have the arctic nights from late November throuh late January, meaning the sun does not go above the horizon in this period (and of course the autumn is fairly dark and it gets darker the closer it gets to winter, and the opposite in spring, it's much lighter and it stays light longer the closer we get to summer). Would it be possible, with the help of plant-lights or without, to grow them in these conditions?
    Also, I really love this pros and cons of orchid species! It makes it easier to see for beginners like me where certain problems might arise :)

      miumiu , any bulb named daylight with a spectrum of 6500k will work fine, they are full spectrum and mimic daylight and are compact florescent not wasting too much electricity, hopefully this is helpful to you.

    • @TY-ob7fz
      @TY-ob7fz 6 лет назад +1

      David Rodriguez. Hi Dave. Here in the states (?) daylight bulbs are usually 5000k. It seems it’s getting harder and harder to find bulbs at 6500 which is a little more blue-ish, and the cfl’s are beginning to phase out as these bulbs are not healthy to be disposed of in land fills (??) when they burn out. What wattage/lumin do you think needed for Cattleya and Vandaous orchids ?

    • @DavidRodriguez-jt1ns
      @DavidRodriguez-jt1ns 6 лет назад

      Thomas M , 5000k will work fine, if not fluorescent tubes will work also, about 4 inches from the top of the plant, LED lights work good, so do metal halide bulbs at 250w 3ft from the top of the plant, that is if price is not an issue for you as both LED and metal halides can be pricey, and flourescent tubes need to be replaced every 1 1/2 years.

    • @TY-ob7fz
      @TY-ob7fz 6 лет назад

      David Rodriguez thanks for responds Dave. I’ve always been interested in lighting, but in restaurant ambience and generally lighting rather than horticultural uses. Since retirement has shift interest though, and especially in this environment of led versus fluorescent/HID(metal halite,high pressure sodium)/Halogen. I’ve always saw that metal halite used in salt water tanks and was terrific in growing and maintaining the plant life as it imitated the natural sunlight very well. I see LED’s trying to replace plant lighting from fluorescents and incandescents, but seen some correlation of wattage to plant growth and its cause to smaller growth. I think(??) much blue red combinations are used seems not as good as that sharp and nasty metal halite. You’d probably have to wear a sun tan lotion to water your plants. Is 250w an overkill ??, that’s about 17,000 Lumens. Also this is where 6500k seems advantageous over 5000k where the light output is a broader spectrum. Sorry i don’t know too much about this general topic and all over the place, but this subject intrigued me

      Hello,
      I live in NE FL. We have a fern growing wild in all our oaks (and a lot of other trees) called a Resurrection fern. A Cattleyas hint we go by is, as long as they're shriveled, let the catt's rest. When nature waters the fern, water the Cattleyas. Your catts will be fine.

      I keep the medium very very open. And there are big holes in the pot. I smell through them. If I smell moisture I never water, if I smell bone dry medium I give it water and thoroughly. This can be every 10 days in winter or 4 or 5 days in summer.

      @@ellenfay3070 a great tip. I have the ferns too and marvel at how they can look dead and then come alive with a little rain. Will watch them more closely now.

      RUclips Red is the no ad alternative to youtube. For a monthly fee you will not experience any ads and you will continue to support your favorite creators to do what they, and you, like, as often as they possibly can, with the best quality equipment they can afford.
