    What a great guest to invite over! I am surprised I must say. I've been following Al's music for years now, his work with the legendary jazz fusion group Return To Forever was stellar and his solo albums are permeating with top notch professional musicianship and virtuosity. I love his Latin inclinations in his works.

    i discovered Al when I was 12 years old because he was on the cover or Guitar Player magazine.. I loved his early records, Elegant Gypsy and Land of the Midnight Sun.. it hurt my brain, but slowly as i listened over and over I mentally learned his music and understood it.. Noone else around me got it. Hes got that Jersey NYC bluntness, no BS... just honest and extremely talented... this is way before the internet and social media. He is one of the greatest musicians in the world.. fantastic conposer who fused a Les Paul and a Marshall stack into the jazz world. fuck hollowbodies... he played a black Les Paul and kicked ass with the muting etc... love it!

    I must have been around 17 years old when I listened the record "Friday night in San Francisco" the first time. These tunes have really opened my mind to accustical music. Yesterday I bought tickets for his concert that will be in 2 days in Palma de Mallorca. I am really looking forward to this event! Al Di Meola ,As great & technically sound he is. He seems to have a dried personality or a slight air of arrogance, that seems to reflect in his music, i.e. kinda like robotic, or too perfect as I listened over the years, trying to seek out inspiration, but I might be wrong, when I Listen to Paco De Lucia or John McLaughlin I feel automatically inspired, especially Paco...

      Yeah, unfortunately a lot of our gifted musicians can seem arrogant. The only thing I would say in their defense is that they have and still work very hard to keep their chops going and growing. A lot is expected from them. A bad review of a project they really poured themselves into can bring it out too. I remember reading one tough criticism of a Di Meola recording. Al responded by writing in and calling the reviewer a jerk off or something equally descriptive. I still smile when I think of Pat Methany getting pissed in an interview and saying that he'd wrap his guitar around Kenny G's head if he was there. One of life's big ironies is how the people who can't play are the biggest critics of those who can. Miserable fuckers.

    Actually, Al is incorrect about Fusion. Fusion is blending at least 2 genres of music. there has been other forms of music dating further back to Barry Miles. There were latin jazz bands decades before jazz/rock fusion. But I believe the Mahavishu Orchestra actually blended more genres of music than any other band before or afterwards since they infused classical, Classical Indian, blues, jazz, rock, funk, etc. etc. and it was done seamlessly where you can't really pick out one dominate genre.

    I didn't quite catch - so Al Di finished Berkley University/College or not? If not how he can read and write notes on charts and how can he be fluent in all the modes, scales improvisations. I would ask 2 questions to him: 1) his favourite mode (e.g. for Steve Vais is Lydian) 2nd: how it is possible to play jazz even using pentatonic (I always thought that the specific sound/melody of jazzy is due to special jazz mode/scale until I've heard jazz solo using pentatonic, so my hypothesis colapsed) - to mention several (beside rythm) defference between roch and jazz solo improvisation, assuming the same virtuoso level of guitarists. What give sthe flavour, what factors that the sam solo in even pentatonic sounds jazzy not rocky? Is any mode/scale especially predilected to jazz improvisations? I noticed that in jazz they prefere such more "exotic" chords like 7,9, e.g. G7, G9 etc.

    • @frederikstephano2926
      @frederikstephano2926 8 лет назад +5

      I consider your 2nd question. I used to think like that until I realized that a lot of jazz player actually using Pentatonic scale often. I meant, you cannot underestimate the power of pentatonic. It's very useful not only for rock,blues or metal but it also can be used for playing jazz. But, still they combined it with other modes such as dorian,chromatic etc.
      ps : sorry for my bad english

    • @piotrhobbysta5614
      @piotrhobbysta5614 8 лет назад

      Frederik Stephano Thank you for your reply, btw: your English is very good :) It's important reply for me because if even 2 persons, may be from 2 different countries, have the same idea/hypothesis concerning special jazz mode, it's more than accidental situation. In other words, there is something in jazz, such very specific that we think, it can't be e.g. pentatonic. Yes, now I know the power of pentatonic. 1 of its important feature is being subset of sounds in most (may be ALL) other modes. So playing solo using pentatonic we will used in any other music without effect of "false" notes. Of course on he condition of playing in the same key. I mean if any team plays using C-dur we have to play in C pentatonic key, and all will be correct, with e.g. G pentatonic there will be effect of counterfeiting.

    Bit of a rant. It's nice to see that great musicians like Al are being admired by googlers but here's an idea. How about a real proof of admiration and respect towards arts and a lifetime of hardwork that "makes" artist. There's currently many many Al Di Meola videos on your RUclips thing some of them scoring millions of views. And I'm sure he's not getting a penny out of it. Well maybe few pennies. The whole setting of him being intervied by google seems a bit ironic. The reality to embrace is that youtube is a huge disruptor of the careers of many great established musicans. Al is rightly very pessimistic about being a career musician today, he's on the spot with the lack of focus - technology as not only disruption but a constant distraction. But, maybe out of politeness he doesn't mention the elephant in the room. Internet detached music from physical locations and physical media, both easily monetized and brought the new thing that is almost impossible to monetize (if you are touring, working artists and don't really have time to be a full time youtuber). And not only that - the abundance and sheer quantity created devaluates the best art out there and burries in under tons of craps - most people are equally happy listening to some guy in his bedroom playing Al Di Meola cover and they don't really care who wrote the tune or that I could be played million times better by the man himself. Rant over. Thanks for organizing this event it was a pleasure to watch.
