The does not speak the truth.
God has send Jesus, what did Jesus do? He sensed the good news and died for our sins.
He sensed the apostles so go out and spread the good news, if people except this news there sins will be forgivin, if they reject the good news there sins will be retained.
This is the what the verse is saying.

I live in a town in Italy with population of 1200 people On Easter monday today, only 20 people attended. I said to myself, that I would be here with only 20 people rather than be in a protestant church with thousands. Jesus is here in this tiny church and his presence is palpable now that things are so bad

Does the Gospel of John 20:23 actually means that the Christian disciples can forgive everyone of all their sins? The answer is no. Here is why the only sins Christian disciples can forgive is those who sins against the Christian disciples we are to forgive our debtors those who sin against us that does not mean we can forgive everyone sins that they have committed. The True Holy righteous saviour the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth shown us an example of how my Heavenly Father God is the one we pray to to have our sins forgiven within the Gospel of Matthew 6:12
      King James Version
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Few verses before the Gospel of Matthew 6:12 is the Gospel of Matthew 6:9-11
      King James Version
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread. See that we pray to Father God in the Gospel of Matthew 6:9-13 the Christian disciples never commanded anyone to come to them so all their sins can be forgiven Amen. It will make no sense for a person to say that John 20:23 means Christian disciples priests can forgive all people sins when Christ Jesus offers up prayer to God the Father so that those who pray according to the Gospel of Matthew 6:9-13 that God forgives them of all their sins we needing to look at Matthew 6:12 when looking at the Gospel of John 20:23. And John 20:23 means that if someone sins against you you forgive and if they who sinned against you ask God forgiveness then they will be forgiven. The True Lord Jesus Christ says unto us within John 20:23
      King James Version
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. Amen. Jesus knows that the sins we can forgive and that is those who sins against you you can forgive whose soever sins ye remit means to forgive those who sins against you and the only time a person whom you forgive for them sinning against you how they can be forgiven is by them praying to Father God the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive them of their debts sins just like a prayer in the Gospel of Matthew 6:9-13 Amen. If someone claims that John 20:23 means Christian disciples priests can forgive all sins I would ask them to show me where any Christian disciples said they forgiven a person of all their sins within the King James Holy Bible?

@@Dale65378 I don't wonder that at all. The word catholic just means "universal" The earliest surviving written use of the term "Catholic Church" (meaning "universal church") was by Ignatius of Antioch in the early 2nd Century. He was said to be a disciple of John the Apostle. He is a direct successor of Christ's disciples.
Just because the term "Catholic Church" is not used in the Bible, does not mean that the apostles nor their direct followers did not invent the term.

God created humanity so that it is in communion with Him. Due to weakness man succumbed to temptation and thus the communion was shattered. The reason is sin. The purpose of Christ's coming is to restore the communion or to reconcile humanity with God. Jesus showed the Way how to do it. So Christ is our redeemer. But creation is an ongoing process and sin continues. But Christ in the revealed form of God would not stay with humanity forever though He is with us sacramentally. As creation and sin continues, so must reconciliation and forgiveness of sin a continuous process. The handing of the power to forgive sins is necessary if redemption is to continue. As the priests forgive sins in the name of Christ, it means that Christ Himself is doing the act. This is the greatest gift God can give humanity.

@Key Skywalker The concept of confession of sin to a priest is nowhere taught in Scripture. First, the New Testament does not teach that there are to be priests in the New Covenant. Instead, the New Testament teaches that all believers are priests.
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:5, ESV)
The priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. That is no longer necessary. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we can now approach God’s throne with boldness
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16, ESV)

    2 Corinthians 2:5-11 (KJV)
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
    10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
Paul here exercises his authority with regard to forgiving sins in the presence of Christ and to reconciling a repentant sinner (perhaps the man mentioned in Paul’s previous letter who committed incest) to the Church. In this way also do Catholic clergy forgive sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Protestant view that Church leaders have no authority or involvement in the “binding and loosing” of the sins of Christians is false.

Because they think they can interpret the scriptures themselves and claim to be inspired by "holy spirit." So, holy spirit inspired each of them differently on the same verses... thousands of them. So each acted according to "the inspiration". Must have been a confused spirit, if you think about it. But ironically, the clear teaching and authority given by Christ in this example, they refuse to death, saying the sacarament of reconciliation is unbiblical and a tradition of man.

John 20:23 is clearly showing that Jesus is GIVING the Apostles the authority to announce forgiveness of sins or retain them, IN THE NAME OF CHRIST. The Apostles cannot forgive sins on their own, or by their own ability, since they are just sinful men themselves. Saint Padre Pio has changed thousand of people's directions/course/way of life through the power of the sacrament of confession.
He has the ability to read souls, that those people who came to him for confession but are not true to their hearts in their confessions, he rejects them and let them come back when the are ready. also when there was a woman who went to confession and the woman really wants to but cannot confess her abortion, Padre Pio then said to the woman that he hears someone crying, and then he says it was the unborn child that the woman aborted years ago... the woman was surprised on how did Padre Pio know about the case.
inside the confession, the Priest is only a servant of God and it is God Himself that heals the hearts and the souls of those People who go into the Confession, and everytime you go out in the Confession, you will always feel this very strong power within your heart and within your souls that you are a new Creation!
the Priest will always be filled up with the Holy Spirit everytime he absolves your sins inside the confession.
you can give it a try, but never ever go to a confession if you are not TRUE with the intentions of confessing your sins, because you will only end up Mocking the Holy Spirit.
and if you are in doubt of whos authority the priest has.... it is clearly explained in this Video,... its always Jesus who Gives such great Authority!

      Michael,
The message refers to the power of forgiving sins by the Church.
When you have committed a sin after Baptism, you must be cleansed again by the power given to the Church by Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as clearly expressed in:
      ▪︎JOHN 20:21-23
      21. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’
      22. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.
      23. If you FORGIVE the sins of any, they are FORGIVEN them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’
The Apostle James confirms the practice of confession of sins through the sacrament of Reconciliation.
      ▪︎JAMES 5:14-16
      14. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
      15. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
      16. Therefore CONFESS your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
-St. Paul confirms the reception of the power to forgive sins from Christ:
      ▪︎2 CORINTHIANS 5, 18-19
      18. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and GAVE US the MINISTRY of RECONCILIATION;
      19. that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and ENTRUSTING TO US the message of RECONCILIATION.
      God bless.

In other words, they were not setting up their own standard evaluating a person's actions and deciding of themselves whether the person should be forgiven or withheld from them. They were pointing to Christ and proclaiming HIS conditions for forgiveness to others. John 3:18 is the forgiveness or lack thereof they were communicating - "he who believes is not condemned, he who doesn't believe is condemned already because he has not believed..."

"Forgive us our sins (debts) as we forgive those who trespass against us (we forgive our debtors)..."
One has to wonder how often one recites those words without understanding them - especially in light of Christ's words on the matter:
      Matthew 6:15
But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
You asked: "So where in history has someone not forgiven and that be ok?"
Only as prescribed for the Apostles to do...since they were the ones to whom the words of Christ applied on that matter since He bestowed on them the priesthood.

Whose soever sins ye remit - See the notes on Matthew 16:19; Matthew 18:18. It is certain God alone can forgive sins; and it would not only be blasphemous, but grossly absurd, to say that any creature could remit the guilt of a transgression which had been committed against the Creator. The apostles received from the Lord the doctrine of reconciliation, and the doctrine of condemnation. They who believed on the Son of God, in consequence of their preaching, had their sins remitted; and they who would not believe were declared to lie under condemnation. The reader is supposes that the power of life and death, and the power of delivering over to Satan, which was granted to the apostles, is here referred to. This was a power which the primitive apostles exclusively possessed. Thank you.

@@JJ-cw3nf FYI don't cherry picked one verse in scripture and build your own doctrine as you need to read the verse in its immediate context.
In John 20:23, Jesus tells His disciples, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." The very core of the gospel message is the truth that the way someone has their sins forgiven is by having faith in Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior. In Acts 10:43-44, when Peter was sharing the gospel, he said, “Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” …
In.”Colossians 2:13-14 says Jesus forgave all our sins. All these passages confirm that Jesus is the one who forgives sin, and He forgives all of our sins. If we have had genuine faith in Him, someone else cannot later decide we are not forgiven one sin or another. So, what exactly did Jesus mean in John 20:23?...
FYI Only God can forgive sins, and Christ, being God, has the power to do so as well, but He never communicated any such power to His disciples, nor did they ever assume any such power to themselves. The key to understanding the meaning of John 20:23 lies in the previous two verses: “Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” He sent them, as He is sending us, to bring the good news of the way to salvation and heaven to the whole world. Jesus was leaving the earth physically but promised God would be with them in the person of the Holy Spirit living in them……
As they proclaimed the gospel, they could honestly tell people who believed in that message that their sins were forgiven, and they could honestly tell people that did not believe in the message that their sins were not forgiven and that they stand condemned in God’s eyes. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him” (John 3:36).
In conclusion, no human being (Priest included) a sinner, cannot forgive the sin of another sinner as our sinning is towards God and not to the Catholic priest. That’s a heretical practice.

John 20:21-23 "As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Groveling indeed.

False. Only God can forgive sins. The Pharisees had better theology then this. They knew that only God 'alone' could forgive sins, and Scripture clearly tells us this. So to say the Apostles had power in themselves to forgive sins is inconsistent and contradicts the rest of Scripture.

Scott L well that’s why God doesn’t allow every brother bubba to interpret Divine Revelation. Next thing you know you’d have tens of thousands of ego clashes and denominations all disagreeing with each other and claiming they all got it straight from the Word. Oh wait. That’s Protestants’ modus operandi. Jesus established a Church with His authority and power to carry the Incarnation through time and space. The Catholic Church is His Body on earth and she Alone has custody of the Truth. Certainly not you and your millions of like minded rebels. I’m glad I could clear up your confusion and heresy. Your welcome. Any time. 😎

Only God can. That's why Jesus didn't say, 'Go out and forgive sins by your own power,' but 'Here, receive the Holy Ghost.' As His Father sent Him to forgive sins, He gave them to do the same. That's why SCRIPTURE SAYS: "IF YOU FORGIVE THE SINS OF ANYONE, THEY ARE FORGIVEN," etc.
Why is it that we can accept all of Scripture, but you cannot accept Jesus' words to the apostles here? You are, ironically, adhering the words of the Jews over and above the very words of Jesus (both are true, it's just ironic that you'll accept only one, and can't reconcile the two because of the view you've taken).

Scott L Saint Augustine (died A.D. 430): “No man can find salvation except in the Catholic Church. Outside the Catholic Church one can have everything except salvation. One can have honor, one can have the sacraments, one can sing alleluia, one can answer amen, one can have faith in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, and preach it too, but never can one find salvation except in the Catholic Church.”
