Decathlon RC 120 (RC 100) first impression- A decent road bike for amazingly little money

  • I wanted to buy a dedicated bike for my home trainer- hoping that I will use it more often when I do not have the hassle of mounting and dismounting the bike all the time.
    So I bought this very affordable Triban RC 120 from the sports discounter Decathlon for 450 EUR. I don't think I will regret the buy.
    I have written about my impression about the bike also on my blog at nerdymamil.com
    There is a glitch in the video at 2:30- hope it is not too distracting :) Probably a bug in the "SlideShow" software I was using to make this video.

      @@LauraLopez-vj4zr Yes, I would not recommend a road bike with gear shifters in the front of the handlebars like the RC100.
      Having the hands always very close to the brakes is safer, especially in the city. Shifter levers combined with the brake levers was a great invention.

    Great video man!
    This is why i love RUclips. You've got dozens of channels talking about super expensive bikes no one can buy, and then one guy talking about a cheap affordable bike with 100k views! I was very curious myself how such a cheap bike compares to my Rose bike.
      I was surprised.
      Though of course I prefer to ride the Rose bike. The Di2 shifting and the hydraulic disk brakes are really a big advantage.
      But for bad weather or if the bike can get stolen or lost I use the (now pimped) Decathlon bike a lot. E.g. I did the Festive 500 challenge with it last winter.

    Thank you for the review. I've been looking at getting my first road bike; I've always had MTBs before. I've managed to find a used RC120(good condition apart from some frame and shifter scratches) for about 290EUR and might close the deal at 270EUR if the guy agrees. I reckon it's a steal at that price since it goes for 370EUR new from Decathalon.
    PS: Where I am, the RC100 and RC120 are different bikes, although they look about the same(I'm fairly sure the frame is the same but the RC120 has a carbon fork for some weight reduction). The weight of the RC100 is 11.3kg in size M while the RC120 is 10.3kg in size M. Also, the RC100 has 1x7 speed gearing with the shifter near the middle of the handlebar while the RC120 has a 2x8 speed drivetrain with shifters on the brake levers. The pricing for the RC100 new is 240EUR compared to the 370EUR for the RC120.

    It's essentially the B'Twin Triban 500 with a new slick of paint. I used to own one and although it impressed me with its ride, I sold it away as I find the microshift shifters irritating and the stem a little too short.
    Currently I ride the B'Twin Ultra 700 AF as my main bike.

      @thenerdymamil8557  5 лет назад +1

      The geometry of the S size bike is really ok for me :-) The stem could probably be changed easily, though.
      Shifting seems to be also ok for me, not too different from the Shimano shifting I am used to, just braking is not- but on the indoor trainer I do not need to brake.

    This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

    I’m enjoying the bike so far ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

      Yes, 40 miles on a bike can be exhausting- but if you ride often, it gets less and less exhausting (or you might want to ride longer and longer).
      A drop bar bike would probably a little faster, because your upper body would be lower and you would be more aerodynamic.
      However, just for training you are probably fine with your hybrid bike. I was riding only hybrid bikes for a very long time- I got my first road bike with a dropped handle bar at age 50.

The bottom bracket is very low quality, the cubes also and the brakes are very poor. The assembly of the bike is horrible, I´ve had to disassembly almost everything and mount almost every piece again... the cubes were so tight from factory that the wheels almost didn´t spin... All the other bolts torques were so loose that for a normal consumer would probably have an acident because of how loose they were. I do not recommend this bike and brand.

      Ja klar- man sollte aber vorher ausprobieren, ob man die Bremshebel gut bedienen kann. Oder man fährt auf einer Strecke, bei der man nicht viel bremsen muss. Vielleicht auch- wie von anderen empfohlen, andere Reifen aufziehen. Sonst auf jeden Fall Ersatz-Schlauch mitnehmen.

    Hey .. Is this a good bike for city rides ?

    • @thenerdymamil8557
      @thenerdymamil8557  4 года назад

      I actually use it for city rides now during the summer.
      However, for winter riding it would probably be good to mount mudguards- the mounting points in the frame are there- and lights.
      It would also be advisable to replace the original tires by something more robust.

    Servus, Reutlingen? Schreib ich doch ma glatt auf Deutsch. frage an dich. ich suche ein günstiges erstes Rennrad. decathöon hat dieses Modell aktuell im Angebot......kaufen, oder Finger weg???
    Danke ma vorab , für dein Feedback

    • @thenerdymamil8557
      @thenerdymamil8557  4 года назад

      Ja, Reutlingen :)
      Ich habe auch gesehen, dass das Rad jetzt bei Decathlon für weniger als 400 EUR zu haben ist. Jetzt mit anderen Reifen- die vielleicht besser sind als die Hutchinson, die bei mir dran sind.
      Bei dem Preis kann man eigentlich nichts falsch machen. Unangenehm waren für mich die Bremsgriffe- aber daran kann man sich vielleicht gewöhnen.
      Wenn Du Dir später ein höherwertiges Rad kaufen willst, kannst Du das vielleicht sogar noch ohne große Verluste verkaufen. Auf jeden Fall ist es sinnvoll, erst mal mit einem billigen Rad Erfahrungen zu sammeln, um zu lernen, was man mit dem Rennrad so machen will und was für ein Rad man dazu braucht.
