I made it my mission to use Cyril in my Golden Deer playthrough after another youtuber(Ghaststation) put out a video talking about his viability. And when comparing stats, my WL Cyril is only slightly behind WL Hilda except in Dex where he almost doubles her. Cyril is a unit that gets slept on hard because they look at his growths and leave him to rot on the bench. Also, WL Cyril has a massive 70% Speed growth, just saying.
Jack what’s wrong with Cyril’s character? You mean his personality? He’s not much different from Catherine or Leonie obsessing over Rhea/Jeralt. Cyril’s basically a workaholic and his supports are great, such as the ones with Manuela, Hilda, Ignatz, and more.
Bryant Rocha they’re bad too but not many people use Catherine as far as i’m aware and Leonie is part of a house so people just put up with her. But I was saying how it’s not just his growths that scare people away it’s also his annoying character and him not being apart of a house that people “sleep” on him
I use Cyril and he's really good. My favorite support conversation that he's got has to be his support with Lysithea. It's so adorable. Sure he may not have any place in other people's eyes and I'm fine with that. People can use whatever character they want in fire emblem games, so of course some units might get benched because the player doesn't like one over the other. It's all just a game to have fun after all.
Jack Cyril is actually shine through in his Support Class event with another class: to mention a few: with Ashe, Hilda, and Manuela. He’s indirectly frank and funnily savage.
I think Cyril its better than you think He gets point blank volley for pretty much free and he gets easy acess to wyvern rider/lord He has really good utility thanks to his moviment and after a while he destroys everyone with his bow skill and after that,thanks to his growths,he becomes one of the best units in your army But i will admit,I still dont know how good he is in maddening but looking at his numbers and the fact that you can adjutant + knowledge gem him I still think he is very usable but you need to babysit him a bit so if you hate him I completely understand...
And I disagree, I don't hate Cyril but he's a really lackluster unit. 1) he doesn't have a real combat personal skill, he comes with Aptitude. If it was a unique skill that he could equip/take off from fights and he has a real combat personal ability then someone could probably make a case for how good he is in fights. 1a) And even with Aptitude his growths just push him to become a normal character. Aptitude doesn't do him any favors towards his growths, so I again disagree with the amazing growths that you mention. He's a normal character with normal growths. 2) The earliest you can get Cyril realistically is when your characters are kind of settling into the mid game for Part 1, where he's already behind. And having a character depend on combat arts to stay relevant is going to be a waste of a slot when you can just have someone like Catherine or Shamir who are good right off the bat in the next chapter or two or so. I forget the actual recruitment time for both but they're not too far form Cyril 3) Why should I have him as an Adjutant when I can have someone else, and why should I give him the knowledge gem to play catch up when I can give it to someone whose already good and make them even better? The whole point of having a Magikarp character/Est character is to see payoff for the stupid amount of time you invest into said unit but you don't even get a good pay off with Cyril when everyone can be a Wyvern Lord/Falcon Lord and be good. All in all playing catch up on a Fire Emblem unit already makes them a bad unit.
Look at his growths though, 55% HP, 40% ATK, 35% MAG, 60% SPD and DEX, 50% LCK 20% DEF and RES and 25% CHA In addition his availability isn’t horrible, Byleth level 5 or 10!
@@jaeaik Byleth only has to be level 10 to recruit Cyril and level 15 to recruit Catherine and Shamir. Consider that EXP gain is slower in early game due to the lack of enemies compared to later on and 10-15 becomes a difference of a few whole chapters. Cyril isn't godlike like the other two, true, but he's not awful.
You say that none of these characters join on the Edelgard route, but characters like Hannemann, Manuela, Shamir, and Alois can be recruited in that route. If I heard you wrong and you said “some” I’m sorry.
Confirmed. Hanneman, Manuela, Shamir, and Alois is the definitive list of Serios characters available to Edelgard (after the timeskip, that is). In fact, Hanneman and Manuela are both Imperial natives, so it actually makes more sense for them to side with the Black Eagles.

Cyril so far is one of my most powerful units in my GD maddening playthrough. He can join as early as chapter 7 and he's most likely going to be the first to unlock Point Blank Volley unless you've trained Leonie's bow skill a crazy amount, I use Ignatz to lower the enemies defense with break shot and then Cyril takes down the rest of the enemies health with a Steel Bow+ and this was even before he had Death Blow! Definitely wouldn't recommend sleeping on the guy... he can get very powerful despite needing to play catch up for a level or two and his niche of Point Blank Volley can only be filled by Leonie if you train her in bows.

As for Hanneman: get him Fiendish Blow, forge him a magic bow, reclass him to archer (recommended to get +20 hit as well) and then sniper and bow knight. This way he will be able to make use of both of his high magic stat and his crest, will have better movement and range than other mages without Thrysus and eventually will also have canto. And you won't have to go through the trouble of starting all over from scratch either. Alternatively you can just keep him a sniper if you want Hunter's Volley if you don't mind him losing out on movement.
My next run is going to be the Church route... so I figure I want to make more use of the Church characters... I'll try this with Hanneman because it does make some sense, seeing as how despite lackluster strength, he's still, nevertheless a potentially capable archer.
I believe that Cyril, Catherine, Gilbert, Flayn, and Seteth are the only characters you can not recruited from the church during the Crismon Flower route
I wouldn't exactly call chapter 4 and 5 as "late". While, yes, Cyril probably would be better off just having amazing growths and an actual prf. If you count Aptitude, he has the highest BST for growths, though admittedly he has the worst starting BST for stats which get worse the longer you wait to recruit him.
As per usual, cyril is a sleeper that everyone trashes on before they find out how amazing he can be with honestly not much investment. His growths (when aptitude is accounted for) make for a claude 2.0 and his starting weapon skills are generous and flexible. I think the main reason he gets shit is his somewhat abrasive personality and obnoxious obsession with Rhea
Not accounting for LTC strats, Manuela can honestly make a good Falcon Knight. Her speed can be really good, she already is good at Swords and Flying, and her balanced strength and magic can make her good at using magic weapons. Too bad Falcon Knight can't use Faith magic like in other games
The lack of magic for the Falcon Knight really annoys me as well as some other issues. Of course, we might get new classes in a future update to cover this.
Tbh you underestimate Cyril's capabilities. 40% str is middling yet he has unrivaled spd and dex making him an amazing crit unit, especially when going into a class like War Master or Wycern Lord.
I've already answered this in a different reply but I disagree. Playing catch up on a unit is only going to make them worse and worse for harder difficulties and investing my time into other units who are already good by the time Cyril joins is a better use of the players time.

Cyril when compared to a unit like Felix has higher growths in everything except for Str and can deal comparable damage as well when equipped with a Battalion since Felix either a, will have 5 extra dmg when no battalion is equipped or b will habe no prf like Cyril with his advantage now being his Major Crest. Cyril's only terrible thing is when joining in Church route he will have terrible stats because he is forced to join at chapter 12 instead of earlier this will have no class modifier and be pretty bad stat wise. Yet in BL and GD he is a beast, able to join by chapter 7 meaning he can be really strong really early in those paths.

It looks like I am genuinely the only person who enjoyed making Seteth a bow knight (for the sake of variety after many playthroughs) and loved him as one... Sure it was a chore but dang he delivered...
Manuela's lack of any healing spell other than Heal actually makes her one of the worst healers you can possibly use. There are only three characters (well 5 now with the DLC), that will heal less than Manuela in the entire game (minus a ridiculous level grind) since everyone has, at minimum, Recover as a 2nd healing spell or is Lysithea with her bigger numbers. Basically, what I'm saying is that Raphael, Alois, and Dedue will all do a better job keeping your units topped off.
I’m doing an Eagles run currently but not sure, I might be doing a church run after. Won’t Manuela make a decent magic sword user? Maybe assassin for easier doubling if arts don’t kill or just need safe chip?
@russellg9622 Theoretically, but consistent chip is definitely worse that just killing the opponent, something that Manuela just can't do without Hexblade or extensive effort to fight the reason bane. Plus, if the class doesn't give her access to faith magic, you lose out on the one thing good about her. Manuela's just...bad
Jordan Robinson it didn’t really matter. With him and byleth together they could keep each other up forever. He’s tanky enough to alternate tank duties
Since Catherine gets an A rank spell and thunderbrand i also thought she could make a decent mortal savant. But mortal savant's usefulness has been questioned and it's almost a meme class nowadays
I personnally made Flayn a Mortal savant in my last playthrough and she ended up with 30+ strenght and always doing crit, one of my best unit for this playthrough I think
I turned Cyril into a massively sick Wyvern Lord on my Golden Deer team. I sent him out in flying convoys with Claude, Seteth and Leonie and rained death down on everyone. He is much better than you think
For Hanneman, this is gunna sound crazy since hes the mad scientist scholar character, and this promotion path is pretty bonkers. You want the Abilities: Vantage, Lethality, Wrath, Dex+4, and anything else that raises dex, crit rate, mt, or allows extra attacks. The idea is to set up a swordmaster that uses nothing but iron swords. To build around making Lethality trigger enough to matter, you need to sneak in as many attacks and doubles as possible like vantage and desperation. They also need to crit every time due to lethality only activating INSTEAD of crits if the crit is already triggered. If endgame dex is typically in the 40-50 area, lets just lowball it to 40, so that means 10% activation. If you can get your crit rate to 100%, then lethality will activate once every 10 rounds. Since you are a swordmaster, you can use astra on an enemy you already double, and hit them 10 consecutive times in a single round, securing the kill even if you do 0 damage. If a skill exists that conserves weapon uses, then you can upgrade to a few killing edge+ and getting that 100% crit will be cake. With that out of the way, how do i get more Dex for lethality...? Dancer Manuela. That's how. the master class dancer ability gives +8Dex and +2MT from rallying. The supports buff both of them, and their crest/abilities synergize very well. Not to mention his Dex growth in swordmaster, assassin, and warrior are pretty high to begin with, nevermind planting the flowers for stat buff items. I'm sure there's even more i cant think of. Swordmaster Hanneman and Dancer/Mage Manuela together as a team, are what the developers intended the "meme savant" to be, but they failed at the fusion dance XD.
Mages with bow proficiency can wield Magic Bow and forging it to Magic Bow+ will give a 3 range bow. This can allow Hanneman to maybe proc his crest when using the bow. I always give Mercedes a Magic Bow+ so she can attack from 3 range when necessary just in case.
I usually use the 1+ range Weapon you get with Flayns Paralouges personally but next time I use Mercy I'll consider that. I didn't know Magic Bow existed till it was too late
I feel like there is one particular role that people tend to forget about and that is being a dedicated Adjutant. Most characters that are hard to find a home for are either geared towards armor (Gilbert, Alois, Dedue, Raphael) or healing classes (Manuela, Flayn), making them great adjutants. And with an Experience Gem equipped they won't fall behind in levels too much should you decide at a later point that you want to field them after all.

I disagree that Cyril comes late, he is the earliest guy you can recruit, having Byleth get to lvl 10 (unless you are on the church route since you can't recruit him while still loyal to edelgard) I'm pretty sure with aptitude he gets the better total growrates of all fire emblem three houses (I might be wrong) and since you get him pretty early he is not an Est specially with good weapon proficiency you can make him either bow knight (with lance, bow and cav boons) or wyvern rider (with lance, axe and flying boons) like you said
I find Flayn to be amazing in Maddening. Her Rescue has saved my ass more times than I can count, and her Fortify is simply too good, one of the best support characters in my opinion, she never lets my team down and her and Mercie make quite a pair for support. Please invest on Flayn, you won't regret it
Hanneman is pretty interesting unit, although he won't abuse of his Crest, the Magic Bow works perfectly for him to do good damage as you stay in the Cavalier Class, specially if you need to raise his riding skill to make him a Dark Knight
I feel like a lot of guides undervalue the amount of class exp you get going different routes. Endgame builds are fun the theorize but a slightly less powerful build obtained much earlier seems better. Some ideas are just overkill since it only matters if you one shot. Taking away 100% or 160% of their hp is pointless.
I’m very excited I am doing all 3 “Lord” routes then doing church last. I have done minimal recruiting outside of each house just embracing the storyline. On the church route in Crimson Flower you lose Pubert and Edelgard so it’s perfect that you can inherit all these church members (I intend on using all of them). I have purposely avoided using church members in other play throughs so I am very excited to embrace them all in 1 route.
I know this is late but definitely underrating cyril with point blank volley and easy access to wyvern rider it makes up for his weaknesses he’s not top tier but certainly no slouch quite good imo
Cyril is actually very good but only when in BL and VW. This allows you to recruit him at Chapter 5. He has an elite combat art in Point Blank Volley with almost no training needed (Leonie is the only other one with access to it and she needs to be at A Bow instead of C+).
You can't get Seteth, Flayn, Catherine or Cyril in the Black Eagles route, but imo getting access to Edelgard herself as well as Hubert and Jeritza more than makes up for it. Even though the Black Eagles route isn't my preferred route, Jeritza and Edelgard just become crazy weapons of mass destruction in every Black Eagles route I play.
Cyril is actually a Wyvern Lord on dual wield using Axe and Bow. Not because his stats but because his low investment and thus get easily go to greater class to rake the bigger growth bonus from the class and thus his low base stat growth. Also his combat arts in bow actually very good: point blank volley on C+ ! The other person who can use it only Leonie and that's on A proficiency.
Man... the new datamine leak may change this info a bit. The new classes seems like they will work well for Hanneman, Manuela, and Flayn in particular. Alois and Catherine may also like these classes.
Catherine is a top physical offensive unit for me, probably top 5 in the game. I use swordmaster and falcon knight for her, and her speed and damage output are nearly unrivaled. Her bases are insane and her growths are among the best. I use her on every route that she's available: top 3 recruit for me for sure, along with Felix for offensive physical damage. I'm using Shamir for the first time on my current crimson flower route. And I've got to say, I'm kinda disappointed in her. Her bases aren't much to praise and her growths won't help her in the areas that she needs. She's meant to be a sniper or bow knight, but neither gives her the attack and speed that she'll want long term. So I made her a Pegasus knight/falcon knight since she's already got the useful Lance rank and her bow rank is the best quality about her. Honestly, I think this is her best final class instead of bow knight, because falcon knight gives her strength and speed and allows her to fly with her great bow rank. Sure, she won't have Hunter's volley or bow range +2 but falcon knight is the second best master class in the game, and possibly even the best/better than wyvern Lord depending on the character. But she's disappointing because at the Leonie late joining recruitment level of around 21, Leonie has a lower bow rank of B with the same Lance rank of B, but Leonie makes for a far better unit overall: with 2 crimson flower chapters remaining, Leonie has about 10 more strength and 15 more speed. It's almost ridiculous how much a late recruitment Leonie outclassed Shamir despite Shamir having A rank in bows at the start while Leonie only had B in bows. If you don't plan to use Leonie, then Shamir is fine. But I feel like Leonie will always turn out better even if Shamir starts with the better bow rank early on. And even falcon knight Bernadetta in my silver snow playthrough turned out better than my current Shamir as well, as did falcon knight Ingrid on Blue Lions. Shamir is fine but IMO far worse than this trio of falcon knight, and her stats will never be that great as a bow knight or sniper either.
making him any of the faster classes like assassin will instantly increase his speed as he'll get his speed raised to assassin's base speed. that and his class speed modifier will go from -6 to +5. I managed to get his base speed up to 12 by making him an assassin. 17 speed isn't actually that bad considering gilbert has got the strength and weight skill to use heavy weapons without hurting his AS. with speed ring and speed +2 that's up to 21 speed which is actually about par for endgame on normal difficulty.
Cyril is actually not bad his combat arts and skills start out pretty well and his growths are well rounded I think he would make a decent assassin or Wyvern his lowest growth is like 30 with aptitude and he has 60 dexterity and speed I believe so Assassin is great. Hehas 30 in both defensive stats which is higher than the majority of units and his hp is over 50 percent so he is one of the tankiest characters in the game and with strength 40 that is higher than Ingrid. Biggest issues with him is just he starts weak.
Foul! My current Cyril is an amazing wyvern lord on par with Petra and Seteth! Then again, it's a Silver Snow playthrough and he didn't join until after chapter 11, so by then he was ready to bypass the first two tiers and become a wyvern knight. He's a lot harder to use with early recruitment. As for Gilbert, I'm making him Dimitri's support partner next BL run. I'll have to put a lot of effort into him.

I just finished Silver Snow with Flayn as a Falcon Knight since I also had Manuela and Mercedes for healing. It was actually quite hilarious later in the game because she could pretty reliably either avoid or tank a hit from almost any enemy spellcaster thanks to her high res stat (She was taking 0-5 damage from even spells like Bolganone, Aura, or Ragnarok). Pretty much the only enemy spellcasters who could deal decent damage to her were Hubert and the General from the Enbarr interior. Yeah, her Strength stat was not great, but she had a high enough crit rate with a killer lance and the rapier that she could still reliably kill things. I wasn't on Maddening so it's not a definitive viability test or anything, but on Hard she certainly works as a mage killer if you take her down that route.
Ok so I completely slept on Cyril in my first playthrough as I felt I had better characters already and playing Blue Lions kinda loved Ashe. I also found his personality quite annoying. Then on my next playthrough I decided to go Golden Deer. To be fully transparent, I did not like Ignatz so I ended up not having an archer for a while. At around chapter 7 I recruited Cyril who by this point had not the greatest stats I will admit. I grinded him out upto the timeskip, leaving him with a high Bow, axe and flying skill and a very high Dex and speed compared to my other units. His personality didn't seem as bothersome anymore in fact his devotion to Rhea seemed quite cute to me at this point and I fully understood why he was so devoted through supports. His supports with characters such as Hilda were quite funny aswell which I would've missed out on if I hadn't recruited him. At this point I began looking more at growth rates and class modifiers which k didn't really pay attention to before. Having him as a pre-timeskip wyvern rider gave him a 50 strength growth with his personal skill in aptitude as well as an 85 hp growth and a 60 Dex and speed growth. He became a tanky crit machine with an A in bows and point blank volley was a very nice bonus. Post timeskip he became a go-to unit. I used him in every mission and paralogue right upto the endgame. He became a wyvern lord at chapter 16 which made him even better than before. He ended up being leaps and bounds better than Hilda who was also a tank. I'm not writing this to tell you you absolutely must recruit him, just to say maybe give him a chance? I don't regret giving him a chance atall, he was one of my best units and his character was actually quite interesting. He ended up marrying Hilda which I found quite entertaining too.
TLDR Cyril isn't that bad, for me he was one of my best units. His character development is great and his personality may seem annoying at first but if you develop his supports he's quite cool.
Cyril has always been my best unit. His stats are similar to Leonie’s. His speed and dex is phenomenal and, like Dedue, his high HP makes using his lance combat art, vengeance, more easier and deadlier.

I know this is a year old but both the professors will join u in crimson flower, along with shamir and alois, you just have to recruit them before chapter 12, catherine won't join you, however
I didn't like using Hanneman or Manuela in my first 2 playthroughs because it always felt like a hassle when I had so many options already available that could take their place. Then I made Hanneman Dark Bishop with a magic bow. A solid secondary magic user. And then I bought the DLC and made Manuela a trickster. She became a mainstay through so many maps.
Personally I always thought Cyril was pretty good once you put work into him. I would depend on him to fly over and weaken enemies from a distance or just straight up take them out. He actually was one of my strongest units in Golden Deer and I never saw him get bad level ups (I just assumed it was aptitude at first). Maybe I was lucky in that run because he wasn’t as strong in the other routes but he was always dependable. I say give him a chance.
I made Catherine into a falcon knight. Mostly because I wanted to roll 6 flyers: Bernie Petra Shamir Catherine Caspar Ferdinand The females all had tri attack from Pegasus knight, and I basically abused the system over and over again.
War Master Hanneman is pretty cool especially with Aura Knuckles giving a guaranteed follow-up and his high Mag and QR giving Follow-ups in Enemy phase. It's at least a nice meme option
Grappler ain't too bad of an option considering how good of a combat art Fierce Iron Fist is. Tripling enemies is a lot better than doubling and Hanneman won't get much speed with his 20% speed growth (30 as grappler and war master) either way.
Shamir will still go with you if you choose to side with Edelgard. I recruited her on my first playthrough with the Black Eagles and she stayed on my team the entire game.
You should do a video like this for the 4 dlc Ashen Wolves characters. I'd love to know how to build them. (Got used to them from the dlc story so I decided to add them to my main team.)

I did Falco Knight for Catherine and personally I felt she was sorta a budget Ingrid. I probably didn't know what I was doing but I felt she lacked Str. Probably cause I didn't think to stay in Swordmaster til level 30 since it was my first time playing
Isn't Gilbert the more Defensive Dedue...? Like, regular Dedue wants to either be a War Master or a Brawler; Gilbert would rather be either a Fortress Knight or a Great Knight
Cyril comes chapter 5 as long as you're not playing Black Eagles I know this videos of probably a bit outdated but that's not late also well yes he does have the worse basis he also has the best hands down combat skills in the entire game so he is by no means the worst unit in the game he outclassed has many many units he's just hard to train up so he can outclass them but if you take Cyril from point A to point B he will surpass pretty much any other Archer including even Bernie who has access to Vengeance because he has access to an easy flying path that also picks up vengeance not to mention Point Blank volley which inherently gives him a brave weapon with any bow
You should do an update on some of these characters! Not tht I personally think any of your opinions are wrong or anything, but I’m interested to know if you think any parts of these ‘best class’ videos have changed since you’ve done them. Like are you still a Felix mortal s.fan? Or any other characters/classes you may have changed your mind about/still want want to defend?

Cyril is not the worst character in the game he’s easy to turn into a Wyvern lord and he’s honestly one of the better snipers. Only competition is Leonie and maybe Bernadetta.

I made it my mission to use Cyril in my Golden Deer playthrough after another youtuber(Ghaststation) put out a video talking about his viability. And when comparing stats, my WL Cyril is only slightly behind WL Hilda except in Dex where he almost doubles her. Cyril is a unit that gets slept on hard because they look at his growths and leave him to rot on the bench. Also, WL Cyril has a massive 70% Speed growth, just saying.

Jack what’s wrong with Cyril’s character? You mean his personality? He’s not much different from Catherine or Leonie obsessing over Rhea/Jeralt. Cyril’s basically a workaholic and his supports are great, such as the ones with Manuela, Hilda, Ignatz, and more.
Bryant Rocha they’re bad too but not many people use Catherine as far as i’m aware and Leonie is part of a house so people just put up with her. But I was saying how it’s not just his growths that scare people away it’s also his annoying character and him not being apart of a house that people “sleep” on him
I use Cyril and he's really good. My favorite support conversation that he's got has to be his support with Lysithea. It's so adorable. Sure he may not have any place in other people's eyes and I'm fine with that. People can use whatever character they want in fire emblem games, so of course some units might get benched because the player doesn't like one over the other. It's all just a game to have fun after all.
Jack Cyril is actually shine through in his Support Class event with another class: to mention a few: with Ashe, Hilda, and Manuela. He’s indirectly frank and funnily savage.
I think Cyril its better than you think
He gets point blank volley for pretty much free and he gets easy acess to wyvern rider/lord
He has really good utility thanks to his moviment and after a while he destroys everyone with his bow skill and after that,thanks to his growths,he becomes one of the best units in your army
But i will admit,I still dont know how good he is in maddening but looking at his numbers and the fact that you can adjutant + knowledge gem him I still think he is very usable but you need to babysit him a bit so if you hate him I completely understand...
And I disagree, I don't hate Cyril but he's a really lackluster unit.
1) he doesn't have a real combat personal skill, he comes with Aptitude. If it was a unique skill that he could equip/take off from fights and he has a real combat personal ability then someone could probably make a case for how good he is in fights.
1a) And even with Aptitude his growths just push him to become a normal character. Aptitude doesn't do him any favors towards his growths, so I again disagree with the amazing growths that you mention. He's a normal character with normal growths.
2) The earliest you can get Cyril realistically is when your characters are kind of settling into the mid game for Part 1, where he's already behind. And having a character depend on combat arts to stay relevant is going to be a waste of a slot when you can just have someone like Catherine or Shamir who are good right off the bat in the next chapter or two or so. I forget the actual recruitment time for both but they're not too far form Cyril
3) Why should I have him as an Adjutant when I can have someone else, and why should I give him the knowledge gem to play catch up when I can give it to someone whose already good and make them even better? The whole point of having a Magikarp character/Est character is to see payoff for the stupid amount of time you invest into said unit but you don't even get a good pay off with Cyril when everyone can be a Wyvern Lord/Falcon Lord and be good.
All in all playing catch up on a Fire Emblem unit already makes them a bad unit.
Look at his growths though, 55% HP, 40% ATK, 35% MAG, 60% SPD and DEX, 50% LCK 20% DEF and RES and 25% CHA
In addition his availability isn’t horrible, Byleth level 5 or 10!
@@jaeaik Byleth only has to be level 10 to recruit Cyril and level 15 to recruit Catherine and Shamir. Consider that EXP gain is slower in early game due to the lack of enemies compared to later on and 10-15 becomes a difference of a few whole chapters. Cyril isn't godlike like the other two, true, but he's not awful.

Point Blank Volley ensures that he isn’t dead weight early on... which is a HUGE deal for an Est unit.

Confirmed. Hanneman, Manuela, Shamir, and Alois is the definitive list of Serios characters available to Edelgard (after the timeskip, that is). In fact, Hanneman and Manuela are both Imperial natives, so it actually makes more sense for them to side with the Black Eagles.

Cyril so far is one of my most powerful units in my GD maddening playthrough. He can join as early as chapter 7 and he's most likely going to be the first to unlock Point Blank Volley unless you've trained Leonie's bow skill a crazy amount, I use Ignatz to lower the enemies defense with break shot and then Cyril takes down the rest of the enemies health with a Steel Bow+ and this was even before he had Death Blow!
Definitely wouldn't recommend sleeping on the guy... he can get very powerful despite needing to play catch up for a level or two and his niche of Point Blank Volley can only be filled by Leonie if you train her in bows.

The other thing is that I said Catherine can be a brawler, I messed up that's on me entirely. She can't be a brawler, but she can use Gauntlets really well so I guess consider Gauntlets a secondary weapon for her.

Why would Cyril be good as a mercenary? He seems like one of the characters I wouldn't make a mercenary.
Well my teachers are all great. I even saw Hanneman great with an Magic Bow.
But maybe I saw wrong things.
As for Hanneman: get him Fiendish Blow, forge him a magic bow, reclass him to archer (recommended to get +20 hit as well) and then sniper and bow knight. This way he will be able to make use of both of his high magic stat and his crest, will have better movement and range than other mages without Thrysus and eventually will also have canto. And you won't have to go through the trouble of starting all over from scratch either. Alternatively you can just keep him a sniper if you want Hunter's Volley if you don't mind him losing out on movement.
That is an actually interesting build you got there, I think I will give that a try on one of my playthroughs
My next run is going to be the Church route... so I figure I want to make more use of the Church characters... I'll try this with Hanneman because it does make some sense, seeing as how despite lackluster strength, he's still, nevertheless a potentially capable archer.

While, yes, Cyril probably would be better off just having amazing growths and an actual prf. If you count Aptitude, he has the highest BST for growths, though admittedly he has the worst starting BST for stats which get worse the longer you wait to recruit him.
As per usual, cyril is a sleeper that everyone trashes on before they find out how amazing he can be with honestly not much investment. His growths (when aptitude is accounted for) make for a claude 2.0 and his starting weapon skills are generous and flexible.
I think the main reason he gets shit is his somewhat abrasive personality and obnoxious obsession with Rhea

Not accounting for LTC strats, Manuela can honestly make a good Falcon Knight. Her speed can be really good, she already is good at Swords and Flying, and her balanced strength and magic can make her good at using magic weapons. Too bad Falcon Knight can't use Faith magic like in other games
The lack of magic for the Falcon Knight really annoys me as well as some other issues. Of course, we might get new classes in a future update to cover this.
1Thunderfire We got Dark Flier. Not something that Manuela can pull off easily due to her Reason bane, but she can do it and still be a good unit.

Tbh you underestimate Cyril's capabilities. 40% str is middling yet he has unrivaled spd and dex making him an amazing crit unit, especially when going into a class like War Master or Wycern Lord.
I've already answered this in a different reply but I disagree. Playing catch up on a unit is only going to make them worse and worse for harder difficulties and investing my time into other units who are already good by the time Cyril joins is a better use of the players time.
Cyril's biggest advantage is point-blank volley at C bows, that's pretty useful on maddening

Cyril when compared to a unit like Felix has higher growths in everything except for Str and can deal comparable damage as well when equipped with a Battalion since Felix either a, will have 5 extra dmg when no battalion is equipped or b will habe no prf like Cyril with his advantage now being his Major Crest. Cyril's only terrible thing is when joining in Church route he will have terrible stats because he is forced to join at chapter 12 instead of earlier this will have no class modifier and be pretty bad stat wise. Yet in BL and GD he is a beast, able to join by chapter 7 meaning he can be really strong really early in those paths.

It looks like I am genuinely the only person who enjoyed making Seteth a bow knight (for the sake of variety after many playthroughs) and loved him as one... Sure it was a chore but dang he delivered...
Manuela's lack of any healing spell other than Heal actually makes her one of the worst healers you can possibly use. There are only three characters (well 5 now with the DLC), that will heal less than Manuela in the entire game (minus a ridiculous level grind) since everyone has, at minimum, Recover as a 2nd healing spell or is Lysithea with her bigger numbers.
Basically, what I'm saying is that Raphael, Alois, and Dedue will all do a better job keeping your units topped off.

@russellg9622 Theoretically, but consistent chip is definitely worse that just killing the opponent, something that Manuela just can't do without Hexblade or extensive effort to fight the reason bane. Plus, if the class doesn't give her access to faith magic, you lose out on the one thing good about her. Manuela's just...bad

I turned Cyril into a massively sick Wyvern Lord on my Golden Deer team. I sent him out in flying convoys with Claude, Seteth and Leonie and rained death down on everyone. He is much better than you think
Could you make Hanneman go the Bow route and give him a magic bow? The best of both sides, uses his magic and allows his crest to activate.
Honestly, Cyril was super-useful for me in my Blue Lions route and made an excellent Warrior.
For Hanneman, this is gunna sound crazy since hes the mad scientist scholar character, and this promotion path is pretty bonkers. You want the Abilities: Vantage, Lethality, Wrath, Dex+4, and anything else that raises dex, crit rate, mt, or allows extra attacks. The idea is to set up a swordmaster that uses nothing but iron swords. To build around making Lethality trigger enough to matter, you need to sneak in as many attacks and doubles as possible like vantage and desperation. They also need to crit every time due to lethality only activating INSTEAD of crits if the crit is already triggered. If endgame dex is typically in the 40-50 area, lets just lowball it to 40, so that means 10% activation. If you can get your crit rate to 100%, then lethality will activate once every 10 rounds. Since you are a swordmaster, you can use astra on an enemy you already double, and hit them 10 consecutive times in a single round, securing the kill even if you do 0 damage. If a skill exists that conserves weapon uses, then you can upgrade to a few killing edge+ and getting that 100% crit will be cake. With that out of the way, how do i get more Dex for lethality...?
Dancer Manuela. That's how. the master class dancer ability gives +8Dex and +2MT from rallying. The supports buff both of them, and their crest/abilities synergize very well. Not to mention his Dex growth in swordmaster, assassin, and warrior are pretty high to begin with, nevermind planting the flowers for stat buff items. I'm sure there's even more i cant think of. Swordmaster Hanneman and Dancer/Mage Manuela together as a team, are what the developers intended the "meme savant" to be, but they failed at the fusion dance XD.

Mages with bow proficiency can wield Magic Bow and forging it to Magic Bow+ will give a 3 range bow. This can allow Hanneman to maybe proc his crest when using the bow. I always give Mercedes a Magic Bow+ so she can attack from 3 range when necessary just in case.
I usually use the 1+ range Weapon you get with Flayns Paralouges personally but next time I use Mercy I'll consider that. I didn't know Magic Bow existed till it was too late
Cyril ended up being one of my strongest unit. I am very surprised his stats are bad
I feel like there is one particular role that people tend to forget about and that is being a dedicated Adjutant.
Most characters that are hard to find a home for are either geared towards armor (Gilbert, Alois, Dedue, Raphael) or healing classes (Manuela, Flayn), making them great adjutants. And with an Experience Gem equipped they won't fall behind in levels too much should you decide at a later point that you want to field them after all.

I disagree that Cyril comes late, he is the earliest guy you can recruit, having Byleth get to lvl 10 (unless you are on the church route since you can't recruit him while still loyal to edelgard)
I'm pretty sure with aptitude he gets the better total growrates of all fire emblem three houses (I might be wrong) and since you get him pretty early he is not an Est specially with good weapon proficiency you can make him either bow knight (with lance, bow and cav boons) or wyvern rider (with lance, axe and flying boons) like you said
I find Flayn to be amazing in Maddening. Her Rescue has saved my ass more times than I can count, and her Fortify is simply too good, one of the best support characters in my opinion, she never lets my team down and her and Mercie make quite a pair for support. Please invest on Flayn, you won't regret it
Hanneman is pretty interesting unit, although he won't abuse of his Crest, the Magic Bow works perfectly for him to do good damage as you stay in the Cavalier Class, specially if you need to raise his riding skill to make him a Dark Knight
I feel like a lot of guides undervalue the amount of class exp you get going different routes. Endgame builds are fun the theorize but a slightly less powerful build obtained much earlier seems better. Some ideas are just overkill since it only matters if you one shot. Taking away 100% or 160% of their hp is pointless.
I’m very excited I am doing all 3 “Lord” routes then doing church last. I have done minimal recruiting outside of each house just embracing the storyline. On the church route in Crimson Flower you lose Pubert and Edelgard so it’s perfect that you can inherit all these church members (I intend on using all of them). I have purposely avoided using church members in other play throughs so I am very excited to embrace them all in 1 route.
I know this is late but definitely underrating cyril with point blank volley and easy access to wyvern rider it makes up for his weaknesses he’s not top tier but certainly no slouch quite good imo
Also, Gil DOES have a Crest of Dominic.

Cyril is actually very good but only when in BL and VW. This allows you to recruit him at Chapter 5. He has an elite combat art in Point Blank Volley with almost no training needed (Leonie is the only other one with access to it and she needs to be at A Bow instead of C+).
You can't get Seteth, Flayn, Catherine or Cyril in the Black Eagles route, but imo getting access to Edelgard herself as well as Hubert and Jeritza more than makes up for it. Even though the Black Eagles route isn't my preferred route, Jeritza and Edelgard just become crazy weapons of mass destruction in every Black Eagles route I play.

Cyril is actually a Wyvern Lord on dual wield using Axe and Bow. Not because his stats but because his low investment and thus get easily go to greater class to rake the bigger growth bonus from the class and thus his low base stat growth. Also his combat arts in bow actually very good: point blank volley on C+ ! The other person who can use it only Leonie and that's on A proficiency.

Man... the new datamine leak may change this info a bit. The new classes seems like they will work well for Hanneman, Manuela, and Flayn in particular. Alois and Catherine may also like these classes.
Catherine is a top physical offensive unit for me, probably top 5 in the game. I use swordmaster and falcon knight for her, and her speed and damage output are nearly unrivaled. Her bases are insane and her growths are among the best. I use her on every route that she's available: top 3 recruit for me for sure, along with Felix for offensive physical damage.
I'm using Shamir for the first time on my current crimson flower route. And I've got to say, I'm kinda disappointed in her. Her bases aren't much to praise and her growths won't help her in the areas that she needs. She's meant to be a sniper or bow knight, but neither gives her the attack and speed that she'll want long term. So I made her a Pegasus knight/falcon knight since she's already got the useful Lance rank and her bow rank is the best quality about her. Honestly, I think this is her best final class instead of bow knight, because falcon knight gives her strength and speed and allows her to fly with her great bow rank. Sure, she won't have Hunter's volley or bow range +2 but falcon knight is the second best master class in the game, and possibly even the best/better than wyvern Lord depending on the character. But she's disappointing because at the Leonie late joining recruitment level of around 21, Leonie has a lower bow rank of B with the same Lance rank of B, but Leonie makes for a far better unit overall: with 2 crimson flower chapters remaining, Leonie has about 10 more strength and 15 more speed. It's almost ridiculous how much a late recruitment Leonie outclassed Shamir despite Shamir having A rank in bows at the start while Leonie only had B in bows. If you don't plan to use Leonie, then Shamir is fine. But I feel like Leonie will always turn out better even if Shamir starts with the better bow rank early on. And even falcon knight Bernadetta in my silver snow playthrough turned out better than my current Shamir as well, as did falcon knight Ingrid on Blue Lions. Shamir is fine but IMO far worse than this trio of falcon knight, and her stats will never be that great as a bow knight or sniper either.

I can confirm that Gilbert doesn’t have a proficiency in flying but making him a wyvern lord is still good, it buffs his 3 speed stat
making him any of the faster classes like assassin will instantly increase his speed as he'll get his speed raised to assassin's base speed. that and his class speed modifier will go from -6 to +5. I managed to get his base speed up to 12 by making him an assassin. 17 speed isn't actually that bad considering gilbert has got the strength and weight skill to use heavy weapons without hurting his AS. with speed ring and speed +2 that's up to 21 speed which is actually about par for endgame on normal difficulty.
Cyril is actually not bad his combat arts and skills start out pretty well and his growths are well rounded I think he would make a decent assassin or Wyvern his lowest growth is like 30 with aptitude and he has 60 dexterity and speed I believe so Assassin is great. Hehas 30 in both defensive stats which is higher than the majority of units and his hp is over 50 percent so he is one of the tankiest characters in the game and with strength 40 that is higher than Ingrid. Biggest issues with him is just he starts weak.
If you chose Black Eagles, you can actually recruit most of them, for me it was mostly by accident, but some like Catherine can’t be recruited
Foul! My current Cyril is an amazing wyvern lord on par with Petra and Seteth! Then again, it's a Silver Snow playthrough and he didn't join until after chapter 11, so by then he was ready to bypass the first two tiers and become a wyvern knight. He's a lot harder to use with early recruitment.
As for Gilbert, I'm making him Dimitri's support partner next BL run. I'll have to put a lot of effort into him.

I just finished Silver Snow with Flayn as a Falcon Knight since I also had Manuela and Mercedes for healing. It was actually quite hilarious later in the game because she could pretty reliably either avoid or tank a hit from almost any enemy spellcaster thanks to her high res stat (She was taking 0-5 damage from even spells like Bolganone, Aura, or Ragnarok). Pretty much the only enemy spellcasters who could deal decent damage to her were Hubert and the General from the Enbarr interior. Yeah, her Strength stat was not great, but she had a high enough crit rate with a killer lance and the rapier that she could still reliably kill things. I wasn't on Maddening so it's not a definitive viability test or anything, but on Hard she certainly works as a mage killer if you take her down that route.
Ok so I completely slept on Cyril in my first playthrough as I felt I had better characters already and playing Blue Lions kinda loved Ashe. I also found his personality quite annoying.
Then on my next playthrough I decided to go Golden Deer. To be fully transparent, I did not like Ignatz so I ended up not having an archer for a while. At around chapter 7 I recruited Cyril who by this point had not the greatest stats I will admit. I grinded him out upto the timeskip, leaving him with a high Bow, axe and flying skill and a very high Dex and speed compared to my other units. His personality didn't seem as bothersome anymore in fact his devotion to Rhea seemed quite cute to me at this point and I fully understood why he was so devoted through supports. His supports with characters such as Hilda were quite funny aswell which I would've missed out on if I hadn't recruited him.
At this point I began looking more at growth rates and class modifiers which k didn't really pay attention to before. Having him as a pre-timeskip wyvern rider gave him a 50 strength growth with his personal skill in aptitude as well as an 85 hp growth and a 60 Dex and speed growth. He became a tanky crit machine with an A in bows and point blank volley was a very nice bonus. Post timeskip he became a go-to unit. I used him in every mission and paralogue right upto the endgame. He became a wyvern lord at chapter 16 which made him even better than before. He ended up being leaps and bounds better than Hilda who was also a tank. I'm not writing this to tell you you absolutely must recruit him, just to say maybe give him a chance? I don't regret giving him a chance atall, he was one of my best units and his character was actually quite interesting. He ended up marrying Hilda which I found quite entertaining too.
TLDR Cyril isn't that bad, for me he was one of my best units. His character development is great and his personality may seem annoying at first but if you develop his supports he's quite cool.
Alois is a good boy.
Cyril has always been my best unit. His stats are similar to Leonie’s. His speed and dex is phenomenal and, like Dedue, his high HP makes using his lance combat art, vengeance, more easier and deadlier.

I know this is a year old but both the professors will join u in crimson flower, along with shamir and alois, you just have to recruit them before chapter 12, catherine won't join you, however
No One Punch Hanneman?
I didn't like using Hanneman or Manuela in my first 2 playthroughs because it always felt like a hassle when I had so many options already available that could take their place.
Then I made Hanneman Dark Bishop with a magic bow. A solid secondary magic user.
And then I bought the DLC and made Manuela a trickster. She became a mainstay through so many maps.
Personally I always thought Cyril was pretty good once you put work into him. I would depend on him to fly over and weaken enemies from a distance or just straight up take them out. He actually was one of my strongest units in Golden Deer and I never saw him get bad level ups (I just assumed it was aptitude at first). Maybe I was lucky in that run because he wasn’t as strong in the other routes but he was always dependable. I say give him a chance.
I made Catherine into a falcon knight. Mostly because I wanted to roll 6 flyers:

Caspar
Ferdinand
The females all had tri attack from Pegasus knight, and I basically abused the system over and over again.
Quick repose is essential on hanneman imo, he does so well when he can actually double.
War Master Hanneman is pretty cool especially with Aura Knuckles giving a guaranteed follow-up and his high Mag and QR giving Follow-ups in Enemy phase. It's at least a nice meme option

Grappler ain't too bad of an option considering how good of a combat art Fierce Iron Fist is. Tripling enemies is a lot better than doubling and Hanneman won't get much speed with his 20% speed growth (30 as grappler and war master) either way.

Shamir will still go with you if you choose to side with Edelgard. I recruited her on my first playthrough with the Black Eagles and she stayed on my team the entire game.
The Reason i why Pegasus Knight on Shamir and Catherine is Beacuse of the Urge of getting Darting Blow.

I did Falco Knight for Catherine and personally I felt she was sorta a budget Ingrid. I probably didn't know what I was doing but I felt she lacked Str. Probably cause I didn't think to stay in Swordmaster til level 30 since it was my first time playing

Cyril comes chapter 5 as long as you're not playing Black Eagles I know this videos of probably a bit outdated but that's not late also well yes he does have the worse basis he also has the best hands down combat skills in the entire game so he is by no means the worst unit in the game he outclassed has many many units he's just hard to train up so he can outclass them but if you take Cyril from point A to point B he will surpass pretty much any other Archer including even Bernie who has access to Vengeance because he has access to an easy flying path that also picks up vengeance not to mention Point Blank volley which inherently gives him a brave weapon with any bow
You should do an update on some of these characters! Not tht I personally think any of your opinions are wrong or anything, but I’m interested to know if you think any parts of these ‘best class’ videos have changed since you’ve done them. Like are you still a Felix mortal s.fan? Or any other characters/classes you may have changed your mind about/still want want to defend?
Honestly you can only not recruit Seteth Flynn Catherine and Cyril every other church member you can recruit in Edelgard’s route
I,ve run Manuela in all three houses. She is always a solid fighter in the end-game...always a Swordmaster who specializzes in vaping Armored and Cav units with a Rapier...great avo too against ranged units...more utility than Felix as a recruit ❣

Cyril is not the worst character in the game he’s easy to turn into a Wyvern lord and he’s honestly one of the better snipers. Only competition is Leonie and maybe Bernadetta.
