I was thinking about it too. I just cleaned my xfx r9 290x, replaced the fans, thermal paste and cleaned all the dust out. All for like 15 bucks. Runs like a beast now. Had this thing 6+ years still running strong. Runs hot as hell tho but after cleaning it and refurbishing it I gained a ton of fps and dropped its temps quite a bit. Then I added some more fans to my case and also added a surprisingly good cpu cooler from ID cooling for 25 bucks. Runs a stable 1440p 60fps medium on most AAA games. Can even get away with 4k native on some games. My favorite thing to do is run 4k native with 50% render resolution. Could probably even do better with an overclock and an AIO water cooler. Combine that with another 290 sli you could easily get some insane performance out of these cards. My mobo supports sli but my case isnt big enough sadly to fit another one of these beasts. I'm just waiting for the opportunity to buy a gtx 3060ti FE at retail price which probably wont happen anytime soon sadly.

Yes, with three conditions: 1) You have a 700w-ish PSU (600 at a minimum, and then only from a decent brand with an 80 plus rating); 2) You can’t get a GTX 1060, RX 470 or 480 for the same price; and 3) You are aware that the reference cooler models are going to either run very hot or very loud.
@@frostausfernost5551 @frostausfernost In reality, the GPU and CPU might only take 300-350W of power to run, and even once you add in all of the other system components it might still come in well under 500w. However, if someone were using a cheap or used PSU, they might pick up a 500w PSU that doesn't have sufficient PCI-E connectors, or doesn't put out enough power on the 12v rail. Even cheaper 700w PSUs should have at least 500w on the 12v rail and 2x 6+2 PCI-E connectors, whereas the same couldn't be said for cheaper 500w units. Buying a better PSU than you think you need is usually good practice, especially as they can last a long time. I've had my EVGA 750w GQ for over 5 years now!
@@IcebergTech I see. I can remember that I was worried then, but checked how much it takes with p95 and furmark and it was stable. I have the BQ Straight Power, never bargained with PSU´s.
Hehe, I bought that exact model of 290x a few weeks ago for £75 (about $90), so yes! A very good deal! (new 290X video should be coming in late September/early October)
You’ll get a faster card- between 10% and 40% depending on the title , but it has practical downsides too. It requires a beefier PSU, is almost certainly going to run hotter and louder, and most will need a decent sized case. I have a video on the 1050ti on my channel if you want to compare performance.

When I received my card I repasted it with Noctua thermal paste, cleaned all the fans and heatsinks, ran it on an open test bench and it still ran in the high 80s and low 90s. I ended up having to run a custom fan curve in Afterburner that ramped the fans up to near max RPM most of the time.
I have this GPU, but in this video i see the average FPS in Valorant is 180 on high. While I have under 80FPS on lowest settings possible. And it even drops under 50 at times. Can someone pls explain me why is this happening and how I can solve this ? Please
Every card I tested Valorant on in this PC scored about the same 170-180 FPS, from the R9 270X up. The CPU becomes the limiting factor extremely early on. Which CPU do you have?
From a quality brand like Seasonic, BeQuiet, EVGA, I’d suggest at least a 600w unit. From a lesser brand (I use Kolink and Aerocool a lot) I’d suggest a 700w or above. You need two 6+2 PCIE connectors, and if you can, get a PSU that is 80 Plus certified.
I've yet to find a 980 that wasn't extortionately expensive, but I imagine it's equal to this or better. The 580 4GB is noticeably better, but in the UK is disproportionately more expensive than the 290- at least, by pure performance. I'd look for a 480 4GB, myself.
The GPU breaks 90 in a couple of tests, but the CPU is in the 40s and 50s. For a few early tests I was using the stock fan curve on the card, which was very quiet and very hot. I put in a custom fan curve to drop the temps, though it did sound like a hairdryer. If you're shopping for a 290X, make sure to get one with a decent cooler!
WTF u have silent mod or what on gpu can go up to 94c in full hd in cyberpunk on medium i have about 70 fps in combat i suspect faulty power supply card not having anough juice keeps under clocking itself if u look care fully
Hi! Thanks for the comment. As I say in the intro, the 600w PSU in this system is borderline for this card, though the behaviour you refer to only really seems to be during AC: Valhalla. I’d love to retest it with a better PSU to confirm if that’s why Valhalla was so weird, but sadly I don’t have the card any more. Also as I mention in the conclusion, I had to set a custom fan curve to get the temps you see in Afterburner, and the fan was pretty loud. I didn’t mention this in the video, but I’d also replaced the TIM with some Noctua stuff, which helped a lot.
My reference 290X hits 94° as it's in quite bios, custom fan curve it never hits over 86° now, just really really loud On a 700w aerocool cylon 80+ white

I'm just waiting for the opportunity to buy a gtx 3060ti FE at retail price which probably wont happen anytime soon sadly.
how are you maintaining these temps with the reference card. mine hits 95 58 on desktop.
This card was repasted and was running with a custom fan curve that effectively ran the fan at 100% most of the time. Not a great experience!
This videcard need overklocking and water cooling. I playing on bf5 in 1440p - ultra settings with 75 fps (monitor sync overklocked up to 75 hz).
I put an NZXT G10 and Corsair H55 on my first R9 290x many years ago, it was great.
I used my unemployment gibs for a 3950x 5700 system, runs great but I just figured out I couldve heated my house mining ethereum profitably on it, was gonna sell it but its just too fine a wine. Ridiculous overperformance for the time, how much would you have to spend on a 9590x 290x equivalent system today? Besides the power consumption and heat, its quite decent even today
Do you know of a reliable vendor, on eBay or maybe Amazon for a R9 280, 280X, 290, or 290X? Thank you 🤓 I got a hold of an Asus Essentio desktop M51BC PC (yeah, dumpster find!) With an AMD FX 8300 & an XFX Radeon R9 255
Would you recommend I buy it today for my first pc?
Yes, with three conditions:
1) You have a 700w-ish PSU (600 at a minimum, and then only from a decent brand with an 80 plus rating);
2) You can’t get a GTX 1060, RX 470 or 480 for the same price; and
3) You are aware that the reference cooler models are going to either run very hot or very loud.
@@IcebergTech why 700W PSU exactly? I have the card and have a 480W PSU and I do not have any issues. The CPU is the Xeon e3-1230v3
Still rocking my 290x is. 2022 lol
Great Video! Got a USED one coming.Gonna pair it with my R7 3700x & 16gb of 3200 Ram.Currently has a RX550 2GB Card...
Why 8 gigs?! 16 is what is needed now days.
I've got a video about that: ruclips.net/video/HcsUIkvwYdQ/видео.html
Is good deal today 70 bucks for r9 290x 4gb asus direct cu II?
Hehe, I bought that exact model of 290x a few weeks ago for £75 (about $90), so yes! A very good deal!
(new 290X video should be coming in late September/early October)
@@IcebergTech wow thx
Should I upgrade from a 1050ti to this card?
You’ll get a faster card- between 10% and 40% depending on the title , but it has practical downsides too. It requires a beefier PSU, is almost certainly going to run hotter and louder, and most will need a decent sized case. I have a video on the 1050ti on my channel if you want to compare performance.
mans was sweeping the floor in valorant
One of my videos is just going to feature nothing but me dying, I think
Literally just bought one for £120 on eBay. Which is a good deal right now sadly! Hope if future me reads this he's laughing back at me with his RTX 4070.
Bought one today from cex uk uk £55
@@bryanwakefield8879 in store? None online when I checked earlier
@@ferrety2810 I spotted it online at just before 5pm
@@bryanwakefield8879 now that's a good deal. I checked earlier that morning and they only had eBay priced Gtx 970's and 1050ti's etc so you got very lucky there lol
@@ferrety2810 yes i have their app on my phone and have various things saved so when they come in stock i stand a chance of getting them , they had a 290x and the r9 fury on tuesday but i was to slow that day lol
Your future has finally come to pass thankfully
can you help me?? how did you maintain low temp while running the game tho. i have problem with the temp. when running the game, the gpu temp is 94%
When I received my card I repasted it with Noctua thermal paste, cleaned all the fans and heatsinks, ran it on an open test bench and it still ran in the high 80s and low 90s. I ended up having to run a custom fan curve in Afterburner that ramped the fans up to near max RPM most of the time.
@@IcebergTech ahh i see. thanks bruh!
Which CPU do you have?
hello. what psu is recommended for this gpu?
From a quality brand like Seasonic, BeQuiet, EVGA, I’d suggest at least a 600w unit. From a lesser brand (I use Kolink and Aerocool a lot) I’d suggest a 700w or above. You need two 6+2 PCIE connectors, and if you can, get a PSU that is 80 Plus certified.
I hope rdna2 with 12cu is comparable with this
We need better apu now
I'm sure it will be a big deal for laptops and NUC-likes, but I wonder if it will even be released for desktops.
Better than GTX 980 or RX 580 4GB?
I've yet to find a 980 that wasn't extortionately expensive, but I imagine it's equal to this or better. The 580 4GB is noticeably better, but in the UK is disproportionately more expensive than the 290- at least, by pure performance.
I'd look for a 480 4GB, myself.
I take more fps whit 10700k warzone ultra setting 100 fps
Bought one today from cex uk uk £55
That's the deal I got last year, nice to see it's still possible!
@@IcebergTech got a 7970 sapphire vapor-x from them too for £28 ( they sell the 7950 for £38 , go figure lol)
Miners is why the prices are very similar
Im pretty damn sure 8GB of Ram is a bottleneck and tainting results
Do you have the R9 270? I can give you free you are a so good youtuber
I have the same card and like I get better figures at higher settings
Good!
Hmm yes i am in the good days.
nobody observes that the cpu is more than 90 degrees
Same goes for forza second highest setting solid 75fps
Theresa should ve small White slider on card retest IT u must pull IT toward GPU braceket i Have 500w psu with ryzen 3 1 gen af
My reference 290X hits 94° as it's in quite bios, custom fan curve it never hits over 86° now, just really really loud
On a 700w aerocool cylon 80+ white
just got it for 30 bucks

Algorithm
Your crappy CPU and everything else makes this card look worse. I got much better frame rates at higher settings on several of these titles with a better CPU.
Glad you're enjoying the GPU!
Its insane to think this gpu is 8 years old and almost comparable to a rx 570 at a fraction of the price, such a underrated gpu
I loved my r9 280x so much i bought a 380x after it died
