Yay JK! I've been waiting for this one for a long time, as it's a favorite of mine! (Maybe because they mention my birth city!!) I was all smiles and singing along with Donald and Michael. Looking forward to when our friends react to Katy Lied as a whole, because I really love the way the album flows. Lex, there aren't any horns on this cut, but the backing vocals ARE very horn-like. Every time you guys react to Steely Dan it makes my day, and since my birthday is Sunday, (Oh! It's after midnight- Happy Birthday to me!), it feels like a gift. Thanks again, JK, Alexia and Nick! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie P.S. Can't wait for the raffle- I've got to win sometime, right?
Happy birthday Debbie!!! Hope you enjoy your day and feel the love from us all to you!! We couldn’t do this without your ever constant love and support in the comments!! You ROCK!!! ✨ 💕 P.S. Scott A. wants you to choose a song for a marathon with Nick, then michele chooses another and Scott another! HBD to you!!!! 🎉 Let us know!!
Favorite Steely Dan album. Great request from an album full of them. 5 stars. Thanks JK. If you are still scanning comments for requests any Tragically Hip from albums Up To Here, Road Apples or Fully Completely are awsome. Have a cult following in Canada. Great reaction. Keep doing you😀.
The thing that grabbed me by the ears when I'd first heard this song was the opening lyric, "Rose darling, come to me, snake Mary's gone to bed." It didn't even matter what came after that, I was floored! Of course, the rest of the song is brilliant... so very Dan!
Jeff Porcaro is/was one of the few drummers who could found that deep pocket or groove, yet was an expert fill drummer as well. Note the fills as the rhythm and pace change. Very alive and organic, yet super tight,
For me, what makes Donald's vocal style unique is the street-wise attitude he brings to each song. He totally gets the art of storytelling, and his lyric writing completely supports this vocal style.
Strongly Recommended since your Steely Dan journey has come a long way: PIXELEEN and LUNCH WITH GINA from Everything Must Go, their last album. They are snappy, clever, funny, funky, but also swing like crazy.
Buying the albums in sequence on release, I must confess that Katy Lied was the first Steely Dan album that initially felt a little underwhelming to me. But over the years it became clear that there was a lot of subtle stuff going on here, and it gets just as much airplay now in my household as all the other albums. Every listen rewards the listener even more!
This is the album that hooked me. I so dig witnessing that deep mystical soul synergy the two of you share when you’re moving to the music together. My favorite couple!
I'm glad that you get to experience the sharing from more than one angle. More Steely Dan music is always a good thing. More Steely Dan sharing is a great thing also.
Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band and that is true of Steely Dan as well. I might have said that before but it's still true. Where are they going to go? Dave Brubeck Quartet? Possibly! Maybe Beatles. Can't see it. Who else is in the SD genre? Virtually nobody!! Nick and Lex, thanks for doing Rose Darling, I like it a lot, not sure what it means either. Have you done Almost Gothic?
Loving watching you guys getting into music I've known forever! You've watched the Aja documentary, so I am gobsmacked that you haven't done a reaction to Home At Last!! (at least that I could find?) An obscure recommendation for you to check out. A long defunct British band called Be Bop Deluxe. Their live album particularly - Live! In The Air Age from 1977. There is a deluxe box set of all 6 of the shows that were recorded from that tour, in full but the remastered album release is the place to start. I recommend a song call Adventures In a Yorkshire Landscape for the beautiful vibe and jaw dropping guitar work. The full live shows demonstrate a band on top of its game. The performance of AIAYL that was used shows it was NOT touched up overly in the studio beyond mixing etc. Check it out

One of my favorites thanks for filling in the missing songs JK. You can hear Michael McDonald in the background vocals. The meaning of the lyrics is always up for grabs with a variety of realities folding in on each other. Someday you will have heard them all. More to come.
My take on the lyrics has always been that they are singing about sneaking into a dorm room to spend the night. Snake Mary is the grad student dorm rule enforcer, or maybe even a nun at a girls school. You gotta wait til she is sleeping to have your fun. I spent 4 years of my life either sneaking girls into my room or sneaking into their room. We avoided many Snake Marys.
Don’t forget about Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go albums. I have a feeling they’ll be some of your favorite songs, and you guys still have a bunch from both to listen to.
SD Musical production goal: Fagan, Becker and Katz drove each song to achieve musical perfection first then they modified the song with the goal to ensure that the listener would desire to listen to the song over and over again!
Thank you Nick and Lex! Like you, I’m conflicted about wanting to hear the rest of Steely Dan but not too quickly! I think the only songs left on Katy Lied are Everyone’s Gone to the Movies and Throw Back the Little Ones. Rose Darling has Dean Parks on guitar and Michael McDonald on backup. Too darn short!

You have gotten to see the Alan Parsons Project, at least! Won't go into the lyrics, but good to see you two rocking to the Dan once again! I think that we can only say that some of their pieces have more of what each of us personally likes than the other pieces. As you perfectly said, they always try to give their best. And their best is very good indeed.
Forgive me if you already reacted to this but, “Here at the western world” is a great steely Dan song to give a listen to. I think it was only released on there greatest hits.
Another great track from an amazing band! Never disappointing. Thanks JK , glad you something from Katy Lied! I only know a couple from that album! Love to all here! Thanks for the reaction Nick and Alexa what Is it Alexis? Ummm. I mean Alexia! 😂
My dad had a saying "Sounds like he's got marbles in his mouth". It was a derogatory comment I never completely understood. Until I heard Donald. I don't mean it in a negative way but he sometimes sings like he's got marbles in his mouth.

Yeah - I don't think they have a bad song. I don't remember ever hearing this one, and, as usual, it's not just the music that's interesting, it's also the lyrics. I just read this song's lyrics for the first time, and here's my initial reaction. "Snake Mary" is his wife, and the marriage isn't working. He's remembering an old girlfriend named Rose, and thinking he should have chosen her. That was my first interpretation. But I was bothered by the line "all our steaming sounds of love cannot disturb her in her night or raise her sleeping head", and I thought "did he KILL his wife"? Anyways, these are my thoughts literally less than 30 minutes after reading the lyrics.
@@KawaTony1964think these are teenagers. Mary could be one of their moms or someone else in authority like a "house mother". Now that she's asleep they can get at it.
It's still amazing how Nick was so against getting into SD because of the supposed over hype back then. Obviously now there was never any over hype. Just pure honest reality about SD.
You really should have been listening to the music of Steely Dan from the FIRST ALBUM ONWARDS!! You could then hear the natural progression of Walter and Donalds' songwriting in Steely Dan from the ground up and not backwards! Now how about the song 'Your Gold Teeth 2' from the same album? I am sure that you will appreciate the chord changes and the guitar solo by Denny Dias.
Please don't "should" on our friends. I, myself, had only heard the radio hits until Aja came out and a date played it for me. I became an instant fan and went and bought their whole back catalogue. After that, I went so far as to tell myself I could never marry a guy who didn't also love Steely Dan! I didn't find him until I was 36, but we just celebrated our 29th anniversary and we still harmonize to every SD song we play!
@@debrabrabenec3731 Fair enough, a piece of ADVICE to anyone exploring the music of Steely Dan or ANY other artist, for that matter. Start at the beginning. That way, it is like you are growing with the artist and appreciation for the music will grow accordingly. To some this may be a case of diminishing returns. However, and in the case of Steely Dan, the songs become richer and, harmonically at least, more complex.
The lyrics and vocal delivery are very Dylan-ish. This song feels more dated than many of the other tracks on the album, but still a fun listen, and great musicianship, as always! 👍🏼🎸🎼❤️😎
