It’s the state with the biggest economy in the country but also some of the biggest inequalities. Today, Brut is bringing you to California. The housing crisis there is so bad that tiny micro apartments of 32 square feet are popping up in cities like San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles. 32 square feet is tiny, but as you’ll see, the residents that Brut talked to know things could be much worse. Today in California, there are 150,000 people living on the streets.
There are two main reasons behind the crisis: unaffordable rent prices and salaries at a standstill for many workers. It’s a situation that seems to be getting worse every year. One person speaking up about this crisis is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is a former governor of California, and his next mission is to fix the housing crisis in his home state. “We can do better, and we must do better.”, the former governor stated regarding the crisis. Today, about 50,000 workers, retirees, and students are living in their cars.

Imagine a stay at home order where your home is 32sq ft. Prisoners have more room..
.
Yup it’s true, even the tiniest prison rooms are about 80sq ft
Imagine obeying a stay at home order
750 dollar /month for a pod? Those who dare to ask this money are Criminals. I'm truly shocked. I live in Belgium, in a military house, we rent cheap, that means +- 400 euros a month, we have 3 bedrooms, a spacious basement, a garden surrounded by a forest. Although we live 2 streets from the city center. It's not huge, but we have all the comfort we need. I understand living in LA more expensive. But paying the double I'm paying and receiving only 10% of it, that's exploitation! Doing a quick math, the owner receives 7500 dollar for 1 room, imagine there are 5 of these, that's 37500 a month. Those rich ass landlords are stealing from people who are fighting everyday to have a meal or a warm bed. This makes me sick. This pods could be a good idea if they were fairly priced. Like 350 dollar a month. That's a way to give struggling people a chance. Not by sucking them empty like a leach. Also I don't understand why people are proud of this. It's not okay! It's better than not having a roof above your head but I for that price I honestly rather sleep in a tent. I'm not working my ass of to pay my monthly salary to those moneyhungry wolves. They are disgusting!
True and if all else fails like all that room of people could find their own place to rent togather and it'd be cheaper
That’s right sir, you live in BELGIUM!!! Things are ( very sadly ) a whole LOT different here.
I could only afford up to $750 as well and it’s rare to get a place this cheap and it’s lucky. I had to move also from CA recently and I feel for everyone in these places and on the streets.
yer math is off. 750/month in usd. okay, that's per pod, there are 10 in one room. there were three rooms each having 10 and 8. 8x750=6000. the other two rooms bringing in 15k + 6k = 21, 000 usd a month. there are landlords who will complain the rent "is too low for market" and phuque the renters by raising individual pods to 1k a month. you don't know yanks like i know them: if you shake hands with a yank count how many fingers you get back.
people in the usa have not yet realised how much of their govt and legislature have been bought by corporate owners since ronnie raygun's time and how little power they really don't have.
People in China live in cages. Literal cages. If I was homeless I would be grateful for a pod under $1000/month.
American dream, dying in debt and high medical bills. On top of rising prices on housing
So sad to see young people having a hard time to find a place to live it is even more upsetting to see Octavio go through this after he worked all his life and still works!!!
Tbh it's not hard to find a place to live, it's just that most places are suburban disasters and just empty husk of cities. I moved out pandemic hit and I moved back in. Just because things don't seem to be worth trying for here.
I wish OKTAVIO the realy Best from the deep of my Heart - he's so Brave
@@designerama1099: No, is most certainly is NOT hard to find a place to live!!! Buy a bunk bed ( the bigger the better ), use plywood or plastic paneling and convert the bunk beds into enclosed “pods.” Use plastic garbage bags to keep the rain from getting in. Make sure you replace the mattresses with good strong plywood or vinyl. Two more such converted bunk beds, and you’ll have more room, when spliced together! And ofcourse, there’s always rundown old 1970s-1990s R.V.s, campers, station wagons, S.U.Vs, etc!!! It is also easy to “squat.” ( Live in a building that doesn’t even BELONG to you!!! ) I’ve even heard of domestic “squatters” getting the locks changed on the houses they aren’t supposed to be in, so they will have KEYS🔑 to the building!!! After all, those who sell you the new doorknobs, locks and keys don’t know anything!!!
And then, there’s always good old fashioned tents.
I was in Bay Area for 2 months for an internship, and I was paying more than $800 for an apartment with 20+ people and there were 4 people in my room alone (there were two bunk beds). This is the real America that often gets overlooked by the mainstream media.
Yeah it’s pretty horrible. The government needs to step in and regulate housing. When people can’t afford shelter, they’ll turn violent quickly
That’s the world wide mainstream media mind-control institution!!!
Liar
But it's not America, it's California. You go to a state that isn't run by socialists and housing is available. California makes it almost impossible to build housing, and if you manage to get approval activists will sue to stop it.
Meanwhile I chilling by myself with 4 dogs in a 3500 square foot house I bought for $120,000 that comes with 1.65 acres and 3 barns.
Imagine willingly going to San Francisco
I've lived in CA my entire life and I had no clue this was happening here. I live in Sacramento and our housing has skyrocketed because people are moving from the bay area to here. This is so heartbreaking... it's crazy how I just watched a documentary about this but it was in China. I never thought it would happen here...
That has no doubt CHANGED since 1 year ago.
As someone who was born and raised in LA. All I can say is move out. I did. Best decision I made. I live comfortably in a 4bedroom house with a pool.
This is the unfortunate solution. Its the case with all cities, just don't live in a big city. People charge you more rent just for the name LA or San Francisco.
I don't think it's that simple for people struggling in California. Some people don't have the resources to up root their lives and move into a large house with a pool.
Please don't say you came to Texas!!!

$750 a month to live in a 3 metre cube!
I would buy a van and fit it out with folding camping bed, table and chair, together with plastic storage boxes and plastic drawer towers.
One could live considerably better in a van than in those 3 metre cubes and save a lot of money!
That's what most people do
Can we get an update on Octavio? I hope and pray that he has decent housing now.
I desperately want to see an update because it's been 4 years.
It breaks my heart hearing Octavios story. I hope nothing but the best for all of them, bless them.
$750 rent x 20 people = $15,000

@@ericzhang6278 Or just out of cities in general. Suburbs and rural areas don't have as much to do, but they are a bang for your buck compared to major metropolitan areas.
I'm embarrassed to say I'm an American, California teacher was correcting her students homework in her car. This is so wrong on so many levels. If you are working, you should never be homeless in America. They say drug addicts and mentally ill people are homeless. As you can see that is not true. The wages we are paying are too small to sustain people.
I feel like the burden should not be on employers to make the cost of living sustainable. Employers can only do so much. They have a lot of overhead. Most people don’t understand how businesses are ran. The issue and the responsibility should be put on the greedy real estate industry. They are the ones ruining lives due to selfish greed. The real estate industry deserves a crackdown and heavy regulation and reform. Hopefully the old ppl in office will give Young people a chance to make decisions because this is getting embarrassing.
The taxes and rent is too high
America? Dude, this is a California thing, not the whole country. California is in a whole other league when it comes to wealth inequality.
@@theimmortal4718 yes California is really bad but prices on homes and rent has gone up EVERYWHERE. People can blame California all they want but it is the real estate investors causing this problem.

Here's a novel idea, everyone...MOVE! Move to another state, for Christ's sake!
Easier said than done...
Anything close to downtown or the beach is expensive, they should look 20 30 miles away.
Some people just don’t get it lol , no need to live in Los Angeles! I’ve been here born raised 48 yrs I’ve driven all over scal other cities not far at all. Get a cheap car
Solid Designs yea compared to other states

@Danielle hell yeah, Modesto sold out!
100 and have a trade not the im going to be a actor
$750 x 20 = $15,000 a month for that landlord!!???
These people renting are absolutely dumb with money! Who spends $750 for a coffin.
The landlord might be 6 figures in atudent loan debt and have the property that's another 6 figures in LA
Yeah, I agree. The girl in the video said the average monthly cost for a one bedroom is $1500-1600, but she's playing half of that for a pod? She couldnt find a roommate to split a one bedroom? I really don't get it.
“I am an actor”. I have met people like that who could still have a roof over their head, even while making only a couple thousands a month. But then, they also want to do the acting thing and spend most of the little money they are making pursuing unpaid, scam gigs, driving around and collecting parking tickets.
Yes, most of those gigs are scams. They are better of learning a trade in demand and then they can build wealth to buy a duplex or better and overcome the pain of poverty and high rent.
This is beyond evil. I blame the bankers, investment companies, and politicians for their evil greed! 🤬
Gosh, this is a throwback. I lived in my car through college and it sucked so bad. Glad I endured it, living happily now in crazy California.
You can get a huge 2 bedroom apartment in Lafayette,Louisiana or New Orleans for like 600 to 800 dollars equipped with a pool and fitness center.

Move away, move to Texas, Arizona, Nevada, way more affordable. California just isn't worth it if they overcharge you.
Texas getting this way too especially in the last 5-7 years while salaries are low.
Arizona is no longer accepting former California residents.
Tx isn't what it used to be
So I’m watching this from the UK and there’s one thing I don’t understand... all the people they have interviewed seem to be genuine and hardworking but it sounds like the cost of living is the problem. Surely they could just move to another state? Obviously that means leaving California but it’s better than being homeless no?
That depends, for workers at the lower end of the wage scale, there is nowhere they can afford to live, wages have remained stagnant in the US for the past 50 years, and in the case of California the only new housing and development is luxury housing, and the amount of development does not meet the demand
Unless you're working in a tech job making $100k+ a year in California, you wont be able to make it
@@jichaelmackson1805 "the only new development is luxury housing" and why is that? You would proably say "Capitalism" or whatever nonsense. Reality the GOVERNMENT involvement in the economy is what causes luxury places to be built instead of other housing projects, absolutely zero to do with Capitalism.
You have to be from California to understand you don’t just leave the best place in the world.
Being homeless here because California is in our hearts
$750 for a box is still crazy ridiculous, I was hoping these were more like $300. My coastal city is a bit expensive but you can at least have a whole room or at least split a 2br apartment rent at $750.
So how do you guys deal with Covid and being exposed to it with these living conditions in LA?
Bro there’s 2k apartments less in LA… split rent with a roommate or 2, you end up paying the same price. This is ridiculous. CA is ridiculous.
Honestly I am confused on the pricing of those pods, my friend lives in a house with roommates in a single bedroom and pays around 800
Why dont some of them put their money TOGETHER and get a house in the INLAND EMPIRE...which is 40 minutes AWAY from LA
You must have never seen LA traffic since that’s a 3 hour commute.
If you fart in your pod that'd be a real Dutch oven.
Now that would be a real among us moment.( yes, I em a 800,569 year old Boomer, why do you ask?)
Wow I can’t believe how expensive LA has gotten within the last 5 years. You could get a studio apart for $750 then.

i have question for people who are retired what are you still doing in LA ?
Coming from someone who needs privacy alone id rather die than live here
Unfortunately this is the future. As they raise property tax through gentrification. This is why big cities are overrated.
Not everywhere in CA is this expensive.. I don’t understand having to sacrifice so much just to live in These big cities. For what?
Imagine, for a second, making between 2000 to 5000 dollars a month and having to live in your car...like, if you earn 5000 dollars a month in western Europe, you're already in the top 10% earners (I'm not joking) in most countries, and you'll be able to live a good life in most places there, even if you don't live like a king.
This really puts things in perspective and makes me understand why people in America earn such big wages: you really need to make a lot of money just to live decently in this country, it's absolutely insane.
My dad earns $5000-$7200 and my mom $900 a month and we live with my parents friends and rent is $1000 a month. It isn’t the best, we don’t have a kitchen and sometimes my dad has to sleep on the floor. Unfortunately this is how it is in America. If we made this money in my dads home town we would be rich af

Look at the increasing numbers of working poor who live in tent cities, in their cars, or if they are lucky, with extended family. You have a whole generation that are living like nomads. I don't disagree with small businesses and their concern in expenditures that a 15/hr
Increase would create, but what we are seeing all over the country is a transformation of corporate gentrification that is homogenizing every small town and big cities. Look at how your city looks like the town next to you, with the same corporate layout. The irony is that THESE are the same businesses that get massive tax breaks, while the mom and pop businesses continue to struggle and often shutter. Once again look at your own town...and it's these large corporations that won't pay a living wage while at the same time, needs people with EXPENDIBLE INCOME to buy their products....irony. The fact is that most Americans are tapped out and exhausted with just basic living expenses. Cities want to put up luxury apartments instead of affordable housing and the very people that cities need to work in their restraunts and in their service sectors are pushed right out of living there. We are in a trance, focused on window dressing, while our foundation rots away. Housing costs is what needs to be addressed more than increasing the minimum wage, but both are important.
There has to be a way to allow housing as a basic human right, and serve the commodity market for those with the means to invest in it. If Government and big business have an interest in remaining a capitalistic
leader in the world, they need to end this downward fixation of seeking out slave labor where ever they can find it, in some bizzaro world race to the bottom, and plan smart communities where every job is valued (because they are...imagine a politician or corporate C.E.O. that can't get his electricity fixed or his dinner at his favorite bistro because the average worker cannot afford to live there)
Otherwise, we might be headed towards some type of socialism by default. Its why so many young adults are already demanding it....
This is due to too many immigrants coming into the state. When I was their age, I had a 1 bed 1 bath for $335 a month in the 1980s. Now there are an insane amount of people here from everywhere and it is the cause of these insane housing shortages and rental/housing prices.

While there is certainly some "inequalities", the documentary doesn't go much into it. Also, is it possible that there is an increase in homelessness is because:
(a) high bureaucratic red tapes one must have to go through to build housing buildings e.g. Chicago;
(b) undue or unreasonable support of civil society and community based organisations by state and city govenments that object to housing developments that chokes any form of development;
(d) state sponsored policies such as drug use safe zones that have contributed to high influx of homeless people from other states;
(e) mismanagement of funds aimed at housing development and other development related utilities such as electricity (with CA having an outdated and inefficient power system hence the rolling power cuts) and water that discourages investors or people who want to build housing units.
