I’ve seen people in both red and blue states live like this and it’s sad bc most people work their asses off and don’t get what they need and some just give up and let the streets take them over sadly , I had a teacher that was doing good and later on this year he’s on the street homeless and living in his car bc rent is to high , people who don’t have to worry ignore it and don’t say anything bc they’re getting the benefits instead

That's what I tell everyone, while a lot of people who are homeless do have mental problems and addiction (I never actually thought it was laziness) a lot of them are working homeless. They work full-time jobs, with okay pay, but can't afford to rent anything. I mean, you see this family with the 4 kids have a nice car, but they can't afford to rent anything, it seems so backward. Also, the fact that only one of them can work since childcare is so expensive, it's cheaper for the one that earns the least to stay home.

America doesn't have a housing problem, it has a greed problem. There's virtually no good reason for housing prices to have skyrocketed the way they did. And there are more than enough [abandoned] spaces that can either be built or renovated/decorated in order to give people a proper place to live. But impossible bureaucracy, zoning laws, and other obstacles make it so that more and more people find themselves in dire straits while working harder than ever to support themselves and their families. Stop catering to the rich and start caring about your citizens, USA.

I've rented the same "old school" single wide 2 bedroom mobile on acreage in the woods for almost a quarter of a century. My landlord, a now-retired 6th generation dairy farmer who calls me a "lifetime tenant" and "the best tenant any landlord could hope for" and his family consider me "family" and I'm still only paying $600 a month.
When I had stage 3 cancer 14 years ago they told me that no matter what happens they'd never put me out and I'd always have a roof over my head. They kept their word.
I know my situation is very rare and I've never felt more grateful and fortunate.

You are fortunate indeed. My husband had a similar situation. His first wife became ill with liver failure early into their marriage and they had 4 kids to take care of in a blended family. They were renting a crappy single-wide trailer from an out-of-state landlord, who kindly allowed them to make interest-only payments when things were at their worst because they were good tenants who kept the place clean and always paid on time. His wife unfortunately died, but hubby eventually paid off the trailer and sold it - for the same price he paid for it - to a young family dealing with similar circumstances.

The way we could do this is my husband is a truck driver. My little girl was 4 at the time and could ride on the truck with us. Many families we met at the laundromat had similar stories during the pandemic. My adult sons and daughters were accepted to universities before they shutdown and also lost jobs. @little drane yeah, get fat off of the food that people are poisoned with, then go into debt with the medical bills they have to pay for the preventable diseases they have from the cancerous foods they’ve been eating, which is cheaper and pushed in lower income neighborhoods. Not to mention cigarette companies targeting people of lower income, especially those of color. What do poor people who see no way out and have high stress levels do? Oh yeah, smoke cigarettes and do drugs. I’m not saying that personal responsibility doesn’t exist, but most people are sheep; they live their lives in the way things have been laid out to them. Sure, individuals have the power to get themselves out of poverty and to make better choices, but societies don’t work at an individual level entirely. Humans are social creates that behave in a collective way, and to really change the system, things have to change from a structural societal level and not just with a few everyday individuals. It’s the same thing with climate change. Being a waste free, all organic, local buying individual will not remedy the climate crises. It goes beyond an individual level. The small minority of people at the top are largely to blame, while everyone else has no choice but to feed Into it the crises that’s been unscrupulously laid out upon them.

I mean after you have already done it so many times, by the time you are on the third or fourth child and in the same situation, there truly isn't any excuse. If you are not financially stable and have not been for some time, you have absolutely no right to bring another child into the world when you can't even support yourself or the children you already do have, yet they do and they expect everyone else to help them. Although I do believe children are a blessing, I don’t understand why a couple in this situation would keep having more children, when the wife clearly said they’ve been struggling and in and out of homelessness for years. Since then, they had several more children. It’s clear these parents are working very hard to provide for their kids but I do wonder how the decision making process works when a couple is already broke, staying with family and unable to afford a home, yet wind up pregnant several more times. Certainly more affordable homes are needed, more skewers are needed, that’s all very clear. However, there must be personal responsibility too. If they get pregnant again while living in the shelter, it will be even harder to eventually find a way out.

A lot of landlords won’t rent to you if you earn less than 3x the rent per month and have a certain credit score. So, you could make enough for rent but still not afford a place. Plus, childcare is as much as some people make altogether. Personally, I have chosen to not have children in order afford a livelihood. But as a society we can’t punish parents for having children, because it hurts their innocent children. And sometimes people’s financial situation changes, even if they had planned things in the beginning.

Here’s the important points: Childcare workers usually have a caseload of 3-10 kids each. So, there’s no reason parents should pay a 1:1 salary (or even close to it) for each child in childcare. Also, there should be government subsidies that underwrite childcare, as an investment in society and future generations. If I were a parent I’d take care of other people’s children, as a way to avoid paying for my own kids’ childcare and a way to earn a salary. I don’t know why parents don’t do that more often, especially since childcare is hard to come by and expensive.

Had activities for the kids. I was completely devastated. Took me a very long time to recover from all that trauma. That man beat me, financially and spiritually abused me and raped me. And she is having these problems in the cheapest place to live in the US? Imagine all the other people who are maybe elderly, less educated, refugees, etc trying to navigate this system…SMH. What is it going to take for us to wake up to this reality and actually DO something about it?

Bright suggests vibrancy or illustriousness. Obviously she's not that. No one is inspired or aspiring to this. If she was capable, she would have a better paying job. If she was hard-working, she'd have less convenience foods in her pantry. If she was resourceful, she'd have less pressure on her overall financial situation. If she was intelligent, she would have fewer kids and know how to plan her life in a way that maintains financial stability. If you consider her "more so than the average citizen" of any of these adjectives, you're going to have to reevaluate the people you allow into your life. If you can't afford your lifestyle, you're doing it wrong. ESPECIALLY in the United States. Period.

We have one child because we knew it would be easier on us to be able to afford him, I wanted another child but looked toward the cost of raising children and I wanted to be able to help my children when they started their lives outside of our house. I realized that we would not be able to do so if we were to have another. My husband was making 36K at that time and I am a housewife. As wonderful as it is to be a parent I wish more people would consider what kind of life that they will be able to give to their kids before having them.

The issue is people are having a plethora of children and they're not thinking about how they're going to support them. Also, if you want to have a lot of kids, do not rely on the government to help you take care of them. Take a break and get an education.then, you can continue about popping lots of children out. You have a stay at home husband who has no education, yet you're getting pregnant? Please think about the kid's future. Also, while the husband is at home, he could research how to obtain a job working from home and/or how to get a technical school certification to help support the family. These kids do not stay up all day. Aside from the dad finding a way to bring more money, the wife could get a second job-part time.

I wanna know how many kids she had when her housing and money situation started going downhill. That never made sense to me. Why on earth would you keep having kids or putting yourself at risk to have more kids when you can't afford to take care of them? Let's be real. If they didnt have kids or stopped at 1 or even 2, their situation would be way different. They would probably still not be making a lot of money, but they would at least have less mouths to feed and all of the other costs and such that come with having kids.
