I've been wanting to test some new blade coatings for a while now, and after months of talking to various suppliers I was finally able to line up the ultra-high-tech PVD coatings that I really wanted to try!
In this video I put a number of different blade coatings head-to-head through a variety of wear tests and corrosion resistance tests to decide which coating I will use on my knives going forward!
I was able to test 6 different blade coatings including: DLC, WCC, WCC+CrN, CrN, Cerakote and Satin finished A2.
DLC - Diamond-Like Carbon (w/ CrN underlayer)
WCC - Tungsten-Carbide Carbon
WCC+CrN - Tungsten-Carbide Carbon (w/ CrN underlayer)
CrN - Chromium Nitride
Hope you guys enjoy the tests! There are detailed photos of the blades after each step of testing right at the very end of the video.

Watching this 3 years later, and it’s still the best vid comparing different blade coatings. Great video. Well done 🤙🏻
Thanks Max! Glad to hear!
Never have seen a better video on this subject as of April , 2022 Jake the Jackalope
I thought your knives were astounding from a design standpoint alone. But the amount of time, effort and research that you put into perfecting everything about your blades is what is truly amazing. Good work!
Thanks dude! I love having such thorough knowledge of how my knives perform, that's what lets me sleep at night :)
Your testing is what sets you apart.
Thanks Pete!
Gough Custom no worries.
It's awesome that you keep improving your product and trying new things.
Thanks very much mate!
Awesome to see you stand by your product enough to subject them to that sort of testing/abuse
Thanks very much mate!
Excellent video and info! Not only does this demonstrate your high level of concern for the product you provide but that you value your customers enough to provide them with this information. I just wish more companies did what you are doing! Keep up the great work...
Cheers,
Greg
Thanks very much for the kind words Greg!
Love the dedication to testing out the different aspects of coating benefits against one another. Awesome stuff man 👍
you have a very intentional and thorough product development going on! I really enjoy the process updates, too.
Thanks very much Darryl! I appreciate you following along!
Fantastic testing of coatings/treatments!! The detail, documentation and explanation is spot on. This is, by far the best video test I've seen of some of the modern choices of coatings, thank you.
+prongATO cheers mate, no worries at all!
Very cool, thanks for taking the time to do this. I am talking with a company about getting my knives DLC'd so this helped to make my decision more concrete. Great work and Great Knives man!
Awesome mate! I hope you get that sorted!
Terrific methodology (real world) testing and relatively subjective, results oriented approach to choosing the best one to put Your name on! Also loved that your original held up maybe second or third best overall! It's amazing how what is now called PVD (sputtering from my era in cryogenics) has grown almost as much as material/metal sciences. What I appreciate most about you is your continual improvement mindset and striving to bring the best you can to your work and customers. Honored to have watched your arc through these short years now and that you have shared it with so many! Thanks Always, Aaron! ~PJ
Hey PJ!
I love that when I post a new video I can always expect a thoughtful comment from you, I feel very lucky to have people like yourself that have followed along with my development!
The new generation of PVD coatings are really amazing. I am looking forward to developing my specific coatings more as well... One thing I'd really like to try is doing an electroless nickel coating under my DLC coating, that would hugely enhance the corrosion resistance! I am starting to talk to suppliers about that now.
As always, thanks for watching PJ!
-Aaron
+Gough Custom Aaron your development idea for the electroless nickel coating under the dlc coating sounds supreme. You said you are starting a dialogue with your suppliers about this so I will assume this is still in its inception phase, but do you have any estimation of when a prototype with this type of "supercoating" would be released for testing?
+Lord Shin no real idea on timelines yet... I will have to get prototypes coated and then test them, probably a few months at the very earliest.
Solid methodical testing, good to see the continuous improvements.
Thanks very much mate!
You're a Metalhead! Excellent! Keep up the good work, the knives are looking great!
Yeah mate, for sure! Thanks, I'll do my best!
Awesome knives, pretty cool test! Thanks for taking the time to film and present your findings.
Thanks Ben! Glad you liked it mate!
I love your tests. Nothing but respect for investing your time and money into research and knowing your craft. Thank you for sharing.
No worries at all mate! Glad you liked the test!
Finally some good consistent and systematic testing!!! I was wondering which coating to us on one of my knife models thank to you just got my solution handed on a silver platter, you just made my day, thanks a million!!!
+Mirko Radakovic no worries mate, glad the video was helpful!
What a way to spend your Christmas! Truely committed!!
yay! go DLC, definitely my favorite knife coating, I love the look and the feel of it.
Yeah me too! I was very glad it won as I also love the look and feel of it!
Thanks for the RD on coatings and sharing the info.
No worries mate!
Man Aaron, I just absolutely love how thorough and organized all your testing always is. You make it so satisfying to watch! Glad to see you back making vids again. I was wondering what happened to you for quite a while, but now I know that you've spent quite a while working on upping your CNC machining time and process as you shared on BF (coldsteelburns here). Anyway, thanks for sharing all of your hard work with us, it's an awful lot of time and money spent developing an awesome performing and looking survival type knife and here you are spending even more time sharing everything you learn with the world, for free! The Knifemaking community is blessed to have ya brother 👍 😉. I'll be waiting in suspense for you're next uploads! Take care 🙂
Hey bud! Thanks very much for the kind words mate, I feel lucky yo be able to share what I love doing with people like yourself!
i have just started doing my own knifes and I have to say that your clips are like a encyclopedia for me. watched I think all of them. thanks for your hard work mate!
Very glad to hear they're helpful Victor!
I appreciate your comprehensive testing. You answered all the questions I had about DLC.
Glad to hear mate!
LOVE THIS TESTING!!! I am looking at ordering one of your knives soon!
You are a MONSTER when it comes to testing. I truly appreciate the measures you take to create a tool of such QUALITY. A TRUE CRAFTSMAN!!!
Thanks very much man!
Wow, we’ve all seen different tests or knives but this was one of the most thorough and even scientific tight tests I’ve ever seen fantastic job, this must’ve taken you a really long time. That’s the kind of craftsmanship and love of your product that is just amazing.
Thank you very much! Yes it took ages, but it was totally worth it!
I was looking for some testing of blade coatings and breakdown of how each faired. This video couldn't have answered that better. Thanks so much for all the work that went into this video. My next knife will be DLC coated.
No worries at all Bryan!
Thanks for the testing. I’ll have to look into DLC for sure.
+Smock Knives it's good stuff once you get it all worked out!
Wow, really impressive and thorough testing regiment!
Would love to see you do some testing of the friction coefficient as well as test ease of cleaning after exposure to heavy pine sap/etc
Wow, this is a rock solid test. I appreciate your approach here. This is very telling.
Thanks Andre! Glad you liked the tests!
I appreciate your effort in doing tests to offer the best products to RUclips viewers and customers. Congratulations and lots of success!
Thanks very much Gustavo!
That was an impressive, exhaustive test. Well done!
Thanks Mike, glad you liked it mate!
Thank you for this. I was considering Cerakoting my knife because I like the look and feel of it on firearms, and this validated my choice.
No worries mate!
Nice job. Your patience knows no bounds.
Thanks very much mate!
one fine day when you have become very very success with your work. I'll be proud telling my grandchildren that I watched you grow your product up and down. Kudos bro!
Thanks mate! I hope that day comes too!
Now this is true dedication. Absolutely amazing job, there aren't enough people like you who strive to improve their product for the customer and performance of the product instead of just claiming it is better and charging more. Once I get some funds and am legally able to I will definitely be looking to purchase one of your awesome blades!
Thanks very much mate!
Hey fantastic testing. good to see you really trying to maximise the product that you're putting out.
Thanks Thomas!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
No worries Russ, thanks for watching mate!
Will you be selling any of the test knives?
Hey Tyler! I haven't decided yet... I may give a few away but I'll likely keep most of them for future testing.
Let me know if you want to find a home for one :) Your knives are what got me into forging!
+Gough Custom if you give any away and need a home I'll take one haha
This is the level of insanity that I absolutely love and gravitate to.
Haha, I love this comment :) Thanks mate!
when you become a knife yourself!!! your understanding and thoroughness is outstanding!!!
Thanks very much mate!
Really good video! I have a DLC coated Wilson Combat Folder, and it's really like your results! I have some cerakote blades, but the same thing you had the proof happened to me: the coating comes off really fast and even with chips. Thanks for the hard work!
No worries mate, glad you liked the video!
You inspire me to try make a knif by myself! If only I had the needed tools. Much appreciates videos, keep em coming :)
You can get started with fairly simple tools, check out my other videos, I have a lot of tutorials!
Great work! these "behind the scene" videos are awesome
Thanks Calum, glad you liked it!
Great practical information and evidence to back it up. 👍
Just to see how well your knife edges stood up after cutting all that cardboard was really impressive, never mind splitting the wood too ! Greatest respect to your workmanship ! 👍
Thanks very much mate! I want to do a similar demo video with the next version of my knives specifically to show off the performance, something I keep meaning to do but have never gotten around to with this version.
I can't wait to buy one of your knives! Keep up the great work Aaron!
Thanks very much Joshua, will do my best!
This is how to test knives, very thurough.
Several thumbs up; thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much Adam, glad you liked the video!
DLC/IonBond is a wonderful coating as you've shown. I have my barrels done in it and get my internal parts done in it as well for the blacked out guns in my arsenal. It's not a spray on baked coating which some of them are. It's very thin and the properties make the metal look great, picking up fingerprints but then wiping clean time after time again. I love it an will use nothing else.
I agree, I really like DLC and have been very impressed with how it performs!
Walter Sorells has an interesting video on various knife coatings that compliments this one well. he covers more paint-like coatings instead of the ceramics and cermet matricies in this one.
+Austin Fox cool, I'll have to check it out!
thanks for this man i have been looking for a video like this for a long time now to see how to coat my knifes this was rely helpful.
+TheIRONDragon no worries mate!
This is why your channel is better than John Grimsmo. You actually talk about the quality and craftsmanship a lot more. This establishes value in a much better way.
Thanks mate! I love John's channel as well, I'm not really trying to compete with him, we're just doing our own things in our own way!
Very good work, my friend. Excellent editing.
Thanks Austin!
I wish you the very best with your business. With the effort you put forth on your knives, they honestly have to be the best.
Thanks very much mate!
Nice test. Thanks for taking the time and expense to do this.
No worries at all mate! Thanks for watching!
great to see a new video from you, man. I've gotten into knife making myself and your early videos really inspired me. (I'm still working with files and angle grinders. can't afford a $2000 2x72 belt grinder yet) but I am currently saving up for one of your knives.
Nice work man, pleased to hear you're exploring making knives! I'll look forward to making a knife for you!
may I suggest getting a 1x30 belt sander from the horrible freight (harbour freight) just to start out with. it is not great but better than a file.
+Samuel Scott I've got a grizzly 1x30 which is barely better than the harbor freight one. but it comes with a disk sander too. but I finish everything with files because the 1x30 isn't accurate enough for plunge lines and stuff. it's just for stock removal. (at least for me)
Okay cool
What a great video! Thanks for doing this!
Very accurate and methodic tests. Thank you!
Cheers mate! Thanks for watching!
Watching this 7 years late, this is still the best video I've found comparing different blade coatings.
Glad it was helpful!
Good test, and still the nicest shop I've ever seen!
Haha, thanks mate!
Very thorough, nice job Aaron
Thanks mate!
Great tests! All those blades!
Thanks mate! Yeah there was something like 25 blades coated for testing all up, I only ended up using ~10 of them for the tests.
Tunes are spot on too haha!
Thanks bud!
Fantastic video and excellent info. Thank You!
Love your stuff. I'll be ordering one soon hopefully.
Thanks dude, I appreciate the support!
I left my DLC 0200 in a backpack that I took hiking. It rained so hard my backpack needed to be emptied when we got back to the car. I forgot that my knife was in the pack, so when I finally found it in there a week later, it was covered in orange.
A quick cleaning showed that zero DLC had rusted. It was just a part of the exposed metal on the edge that had gone. Looks brand new after the cleaning. I love DLC
Glad to hear you like DLC as well mate!
In RUclips, no one is better than Gough. Awesome videos..
Thanks Juan!
That’s some serious testing 👏 very informative.
Glad you liked it!
Amazing work man!! Just signed up for ordering list :))
Awesome! Thanks mate!
i like so much your testing videos plus you make so good job with them its great that you are a person wich always looking for the best for your customers .
Thanks mate! I definitely want to make the best knives I possibly can!
Sweet new coating!
Yeah! Pretty excited to be able to offer it!
omg the sweat and time that goes into these videos!! thumbs up!
Haha thanks Ed! Surprisingly most people don't realize just how much time it takes! My record so far is 14 months working on a single video...
Great video as always! Looking forward to new videos!
Thanks mate!
Overtime you upload or i see one your vids that i haven't watched, i get excited
+Georg Difalco thanks mate, glad you like them!
this test is awesome, thank you !
Glad you liked it!
all good testing another great video
Thanks Richard!
I had fears of getting a DLC coated blade. I’m not sure why, it’s not like I’m out here hard using my knives. But after watching this, I’m confident that I would have no issues with wear. Thanks! Great video.
Glad it was helpful!!
DLC is good stuff. I have a DLC coated Para 2 that's 9 years old and the blade still looks perfect.
Yeah I've been very happy with DLC on my knives so far!
Very informative, well done!
Thanks very much Casey!
I cant WAIT to have one of these bad boys in my hand!!
Thanks Ben! Glad you liked the video!
Loved your cricket bat shaped mallet - should have used Willow perhaps :-)
Haha, willow definitely would have been better than Pine!
Great video man. Thanks so much for the great info
No worries Michael!
I can't imagine cleaning up after this testing! I am sold to dlc!
Haha it wasn't too bad! And yes DLC is great!
I loved this testing keep ot up
Thanks Armando! I hope to do some more testing like this in the near future!
hey man thanks for this, now im leaning over getting the kimber K6s with DLC coating
No worries at all mate!
Love the videos, maybe one day I will have my own Gough custom knifes!
Thanks Sam! Here's hoping mate!
Lamb of God! Hell yeah dude! I'm a fan of yours now! \m/, That's my kind of metal.
Haha thanks bud! I play Lamb of God often, along with Metallica, Mastodon, and others!
Gough Custom you should try Gojira. Really good for working.
Salty Steel I love hourglass and resolution by Lamb of God!
Good informative videos, I would really love to also see Steel materials used for knives and what they can sustain, newer knife enthusiasts with no workshop knowledge struggle to find that info. From there we can probably move on to different heat treatments and their results.
If you've already made such a videos, please share links brother, would love watching them.
Hey mate! If you check out my channel I have already done a steel testing video that involved different steels and multiple heat treatments for each
Been waiting for this one!!
Glad to be able to finally deliver!!
Also definitely need one of your knives!
Really glad you like them mate!
What and interesting video, it's amazing how you have improved with your techniques and with your performance as well. It makes me sad to live in the other side of the world and not being able of having one of your pieces and become a part of my personal collection, but at least through your videos i enjoy your knives as much as i can. Sorry for my english and hope i made myself clear
I appreciate you following along on my journey mate! Many more cool videos to come!
Looks like you make one hell of a product. I am looking forward to owning one of these masterpieces when you make some more! I am a petroleum engineer by the way and I love watching your videos. Hope to make my own knife by hand someday.
+Brandon Lee thanks very much mate! You should definitely try making one, it's really good fun!
awesome thank you so much for your great work and testing and offering a quality product that is scientific and engineered 🙂
Thank you very much!
Love your knifes, and your videos.
+Tobin Gensler thanks very much Tobin!
Excellent video!!!
Dude I just watched the video then visited your website and I have to say dang!! You’re awesome
That was very interesting. Looking forward to next video! Maybe you could tell about the price for each coating?
Thanks! The coatings all work out to be approximately $20 each per blade, except for the WCC+CrN coating which was $40.
awesome stuff dude
Thanks mate!
Fantastic video. It's good (though uncommon) to see such well controlled tests on RUclips. Is there a reason you wouldn't add salt to the water for corrosion testing?
Thanks! Salt water is not really an intended use for these knives, so I wanted to stay with a more mild corrosion test.
I actually hear that a lot. I go through so many dive knives, haha.
Awesome stuff.
Thanks William!
Thanks for the video any ways, good job!
Cheers mate!
great vid.....great info....thanks for sharing...looking forward to next vids.....
Thanks for watching mate!
