Did you notice whether he had any bullsh*t on his shoes? One of the worst ever ICE cars I've known to go wrong is BMW. I knew a guy who bought new BMW's for 30+ years, around 6 or 7 of them. Almost all had problems or issues of some sort. He's had new engines, new gearboxes, new suspension parts, new electrical parts etc... And these were *all* new cars remember. I usually buy used "bread and butter" cars - nothing fancy - and in almost 50 years I've never needed a new engine or a gearbox....
What you EV shills fail to understand is the difference between the transition from horses to cars and that from ICE to EVs. Cars were 1000 times BETTER than horses. EVs are WORSE than ICE cars.
He has a sister channel which popped upon my feed - god, I hate the YT algorithm sometimes. His opinion was that “evangelists” were lying about EV brakes lasting longer. His take - because EVs are so aerodynamic they need to use brakes more than a conventional car to slow down 😂.
"I've not got an agenda" Just 5 minutes in and Barry's forgotten he wastes his life trying to fight off an accelerating technological revolution. Poor chap. He needs some time out.
2 x EVs in our household, had one of them for 8 years now. Absolute garbage in our experience. Minimal maintenance, even on our 2015 Leaf, still going strong.
Yes. I also have a two EV household. Have driven for over 50 years sometimes 20,000 miles or more per car. The establishment motor and fuel industry have spent the last 12 years peddling lies to wring the last few years out of their declining industry. Barrie Crampton has sold lots of cars owned by vicars and only used on Sundays if he is typical of his stereotype.
Why do you need a 10,000 mile service? My BMW diesel needs servicing every 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first. It will need an oil change, a top up of the ad blue, couple of new filters and that's it. Won't be cheap as it's BMW rates but I'd still expect change out of about 450 quid which isn't that different to yours and it's a big luxury car. Not sure what ancient, garbage cars all the EV shills were driving before they got their shiny new lease cars but they always make a big deal about maintenance. I've had 6 or 7 new BMWs in the last 20 years and never had to have any work done other than the aforementioned oil changes. Sorry, I lied - the windscreen wipers packed in on one of them and needed a new relay.
@sushiginger444 Missing the point. EVs are more reiable than ICE cars. Don't contribute to children's illnesses (asthma) , keep the immediate environment pollution free with zero tail pipe emission and noise pollution. Try an electric BMW, they make some good electric cars.
@sushiginger444 missed something. I had a diesel about 20 years ago thinking it had fuel economy, but was so embarrassed to see the black smoke it chucked out everytime I put my foot down. Come and join us in the modern caring world and say goodbye to dinosaur juice.
@@jayjayaseelan7441too early to say about reliability of EVs. Most of the fleet is less than 4 years old and maintained by fleets no expense spared. There are millions of ICE cars on the road that are 10, 20 years old or more and still going, run by less well off owners who maybe can’t afford regular maintenance. And modern ICE cars don’t chuck out pollution - they’ve never been cleaner. Air quality has only ever been mentioned on one death certificate, as a possible contributing factor - that’s why the London mayor tried to get academics to change their study that showed ULEZ had No impact on child health.
@sushiginger444 Burn something and there is no pollution!? Did a court find a child's asthma and death was caused by pollution by motor vehicles? People driving cars without proper servicing, and that is OK?

@@snodgee there is many EV cars and many ice all stuck in garages with issues that can't get traced. You knowing one person with one issue, isn't an overview of the whole industry. That carnage will be making good money of that leaf, because probably every other week when a new module come in. It will take a load of hours in labour trying to fault find the next module to order. Probably billed to the parent company or to the warranty company at £200ph.
I've had a really hard time buying an EV this last month, all dealers are only interested in pushing their warranty, wheel cover, paint cover, upholstery cover, MOT cover, finance packages etc. Kia were not willing to move a single £1 on the list price on a used EV6. Audi refused to let me book an appointment to view an e-tron until I had a full colonoscopy of a conversation about all the warranty and finance products I would be amenable to. If they really have no flexibility on price and only make money on these warranty products, the brands and dealerships are setting up the sales reps to hate selling EVs to savvy consumers.
Unfortunately the people on the front line that you interact with are whipped every single day about pushing this stuff and many of them will be on a tiny base salary (below minimum wage) unless they meet targets on all sorts of things. It's among the reasons I left working at a premier MB dealer. I was the top sales person within the group for a consistent period and local management were cool with what I was doing...actually helping people get what they wanted. A very senior director intervened and prevented me receiving bonus because I wasn't pushing all their additional garbage which makes them the margin. The motor trade is panicking right now. It's been through a successful and lucrative transition in the last 20 years. Selling cars doesn't make money, selling finance does. The car is just a vehicle to inflict debt upon people. Excuse the pun. So for the last 10+ years, dealerships have made their profit in the service department. Sales showroom (turnover) is vanity and the workshop (profit) is sanity. The panic has come about as they can't charge crazy rip off prices for oil changes & "servicing" any more. More reliable vehicles just means dealerships and independent garages everywhere will be closing their doors and we will get to a model like Tesla. I'm not a fan of that but I believe it's inevitable. I have now transitioned to specialising in classic cars. I think people working in the industry need to either embrace EVs or find a sustainable niche otherwise they'll find that there aren't enough jobs to go around in 10+ years time. Anyway, enough of my rant. Your experience doesn't surprise me one bit.
Just buy via an auction buying company, it'll save you a few pounds and none of the dealership issues. Buy a car that's been serviced and still in manufacturer warranty, no worries
I bought a used Chevrolet Bolt two weeks ago from or local Mazda dealership. Test drove two, a '17 and a '22, picked the '22, paid cash and was out the door the same day. Yes, we had to sit and go through all their sales package for used cars, said no to everything. I don't think upselling at car dealerships is unique to EVs.
@@UpsideDownFork I am still finding rip off prices at main dealers. Quoted 6 hours for a job which I know I could do in 2 (no exaggeration), only for them to back down and offer to do it in 3 when I explained EXACTLY what the job entailed. Then their labour rate was more than double my local indie - even if they were experts then it would not be worth that - and they definitely weren't experts as their diagnostics knowledge was shocking! The part price was £300 but widely available for less than £100 for a premium brand (cheap rubbish was as low as £40), and oil at £15 a litre when I can buy the same exact spec for £25 for 5 litres! And so on.
Thanks for raising this issue, I drive an EV myself, and love it. But I have run into far too many people at charging stations struggling with apps and trying to get their EV to charge. We do need to do better there, but the cars themselves, perfect.
Right now I think the crappy and confusing public charging network is retarding EV takeup. I'm in Oregon, and already have seven different apps for different charging companies just in our state. So far I haven't actually visited a charger that works, they've all been vandalized months ago and not fixed. Happily we can charge exclusively at home, and we may never need to use a public charger, we just want to check it out in case we ever do.

IER, not only funded by big oil co. but also based in Texas..the Oil capital of USA. I love wikipedia's quote of "described as a front group for the fossil fuel industry, since it has accepted financial donations from firms in that sector"...gotta say I think that quote is bang-on. Oh and Texas.....Texas is the leading oil-producing state in the United States and has the largest concentration of oil refineries.
Surprisingly, Texas is doing really well with new solar, wind and batteries in recent years. Second to California thanks to the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act). Companies there understand the value of subsidies!
I've had a Renault Zoe 40 and now 50 GTline over the last 5 years, only had one issue, the heat pump broke in the GTline, car was still drivable and still had some heating thanks to a back up resistive heater. Main dealer replaced the heat pump under warranty.
I've had four Nissan Leafs - one of each of the 24, 30, 40 and 59 kWh - and none of them have ever left me stranded. I'll happily admit that I'm biased towards EVs; as soon as you've driven one, it's hard to go back to fossil fuel cars. I will also say that it wouldn't be accurate to say that they have been entirely problem-free. I did have a Vauxhall Ampera which is a hybrid and that left me stranded after a service of all things; there were very few dealerships that could service them at all in the network and I think the dealership I selected didn't really have the knowledge needed. I didn't keep the Ampera for long after the hassle of being stranded. Interesting to hear about the "sign this to say you've rejected X" ploy. I've had that when buying new cars when the dealership were trying to sell me GAP insurance. I never actually went with the dealership for GAP insurance; the price was about 3-4x what I could easily get on the open market, and my insurance with Aviva (almost always the cheapest for me) covered the first year anyway so their product would have meant I was buying the same insurance twice. To be fair to them, I did show them my insurance and they did acknowledge that it does provide the first-year cover, but it was what I would call a semi-hard sell. It does have its place, for sure, but I think GAP insurance in general is vastly overpriced for a risk that's rather low.
A video idea for you, are you able to find the top 5/10 EV lemons and what went wrong with them and price to fix and compare with an ICE car to help refute Barrie's claims?
I have been driving EVs for 8 years and over 70,000 miles, in all that time I have required one 12v battery earlier this year on a 2018 Leaf apart from normal service items, no brake pads, no brake discs, no nothing apart from tyres and windscreen wipers.
Unfortunately even mentioning this type of clickbait content is going to make them a tiny bit more money and encourage them. Ignore it folks.. just click 'don't recommend this channel' when you find this stuff. Don't comment on their videos, and don't dislike: it's all 'engagement'.
Yes, I agree. I've been mulling over whether me producing this content will actually help at all or potentially just make things worse. For several months i've sat on my hands but I think i've had enough. Friends and family keep seeing it and in some cases have shared it as well. The FUD is getting more desperate and even more vocal. I thought we would be past it by now, but people really are doubling down. I'm not sure that debunking or replying to the claims will make any difference but I want to give it a try and I expect to produce one of these videos per month or so.
I have never owned an EV, but I do own a 14 year old Honda CR-Z hybrid which I bought some 18 months ago. I have seen a few RUclips channels who do nothing but slate EVs, but suffice it to say that I neither watch nor believe their claims. In fact, if I won the lottery, I would have an EV for my day to day use in a flash, with a BMW i8 for longer distances.
I've had my EV since 2019. In that time it's had two scheduled services. At the first service they refilled the washer bottle and checked the tyre and brake wear: no problem. At the second service they flushed out the washer bottle and pipes because I'd used cheap washer fluid that had clogged up the system. They reported on the tyre wear and brakes again: no problem. My next service is scheduled for June '25. I'm on my second set of tyres but that's it-no faults. I'm advised that the brake pads are likely to last at least 80,000 miles. I've never had a car that had longer service intervals or cost so little to service.
@@orionbetelgeuse1937 Battery cells rarely fail and are not that hard to replace. Cost for a Nissan leaf is about a grand. No worse than changing a gearbox or clutch. ICE cars have plenty of electronics and software to go wrong too, as well as complicated emissions systems such as dpfs cats egrs etc that add no value. All the empirical evidence shows EVs are more reliable. A timing chain is a major job in most cars . As for belts being reliable, tell that to wet belt owners!
@orionbetelgeuse1937 nonsense even with cooling it's really not difficult. It's draining a system undoing two bolts and replacing a cell. I know a lot of traditional mechanics think its magic but it really isnt

Great coverage. Love what you did here. Just one thing: if you're impartial then you can't "pick a side". He says he's impartial and he's seemingly kind of living up to that claim. Also, you have a go at him for a click bait misleading title, and yours is along the same lines. I approve though. It's about getting the right eyes on it, and sceptics might click on this for validation and get a lesson how how to check sources for credibility. Good work 👍
I think there is an argument for both sides. Car mechanicals have generally improved over the years but the electronics typically needed for ever tightening emissions controls have let them down. EVs have even more electronics and they are overall more complex with far less trained people able to fix them when they do eventually go wrong. However, this will probably sort itself out over the next 5 years or so.
Barry, just start your next video with 'a bloke down the pub told me'. I remember when electronic ignition became commonplace, people said, ' when you break down, there's nothing to clean or adjust, your fuked'.
EVs don’t need new transmissions or water or fuel pumps! In the last year I’ve replaced U joints, spark plugs, a head gasket and a power steering pump on my Dodge truck. And my truck is remarkably tough and reliable compared to most other vehicles I’ve owned. As to your about Luddites, you also see that in the building trades! I’m an ecologist by training. Being in a low wage trade, if I want a nice house or vehicle, I have to build and maintain them myself! Many carpenters, plumbers, electricians, HVAC guys, etc., are very resistant to adapting to new methods and technologies. And while not all new technologies are better, many are. Heat pumps will save homeowners tens of thousands over traditional hot water heaters, furnaces and ACs, especially when paired with solar and batteries. And induction stoves are far better and less expensive to operate than gas. Smart electrical panels, while initially expensive, will pay for themselves many times over in electricity savings. And, for homeowners who have solar, charging your car off the panels on weekends will save many thousands over the lifetime of the car. We won’t be having this debate about EV reliability in five years. Most batteries installed in 2025 models will outlast the rest of the car. And afterwards, we will be installing the used car batteries in our garages to power our homes overnight and on cloudy days.
If EVs are so good, why all the hassle? Surely, they would sell like hot cakes to everyone that could afford one, but that doesn't seem to be happening...... Strange that.
I couldn’t agree more regarding citing sources, back in the days when i used to watch MSM, i always said they should start any story with their source and from that you can check who is funding the item. As you stated, it usually explains the motivation and often highlights their biases. The bulk of Barrie Crampton’s recent vlogs have been about the EV depreciation and his perceived misinformation on the published sales figures due to widespread pre registering of EVs. Which has always been a tactic used similarly by dealers with ICE vehicles, although I guess the impending penalties for selling too few EVs compared to ICE vehicles is obviously having a greater effect on the current car sales market🤦♂️🏴🇬🇧

The first was about the efficiency of the electric drive needing a lot less primary enegy than the ice and drew a parallel with the rail industry that world wide has converted to electric trains (except in uk of course) and a link to the paper from the society of concerned scientists. The second was pointing out what wikipedia said about the ier who produced the report. They were both taken down so there is no point in disagreeing with Barrie. Might be upsetting his audience. The beta technology that is changing fast, that manufacturers have the least experience with and is being rushed to market is the most unreliable. Followed by the most overly complex technology with the most failure modes. Standard hybrids seem to be unreliable because apart from Toyota eCVT, most belt driven CVT gearboxes are very poor especially Nissan. Yes. I also have a two EV household. Have driven for over 50 years sometimes 20,000 miles or more per car. Barrie Crampton has sold lots of cars owned by vicars and only used on Sundays if he is typical of his stereotype.
My 10000 mile service cost £95 and 20000 £150. My brakes are 5% worn after 20000 miles. This guy is a fear monger.

I've had a Renault Zoe 40 and now 50 GTline over the last 5 years, only had one issue, the heat pump broke in the GTline, car was still drivable and still had some heating thanks to a back up resistive heater. Main dealer replaced the heat pump under warranty.
Ev's are part of the solution.

Secondhand EVs are becoming more affordable. You've seen @upsidedownfork's well priced £8.5k MG5 video?

Those of us that own EVs know that this reliability claim is utter BS.
The ICE vehicles have about 20K moving parts and most EVs have about 40 moving parts....cased closed.
EVs are not overall more complex. Not by a mile.
Well done, keep up the good work.

But doesn't really look like you've done any debunking at all. If you had done any sort of research, you'd know cobalt is used in the desulphurisation process for petrol and diesel, AND many EV batteries are moving away from it. Lithium is mined in places like Australia, so not sure what your point is there.
@@johnnydoe1984 ahhhhhhh, confirmed as per my earlier suspicions…you ARE a massive tw@t 😅😅😅
Every report that has looked at reliability shows that pure EV are the most unreliable, followed by plugin hybrids, then hybrids. This is exactly what you would expect.
There is no point in evangelising EVs (you are about 10 years late?) because like heat pumps they have to be sold otherwise there are fines, which is strange if they are better tech, I don't remember companies being fined for not using electronic fuel injection?
Point me to 1 report. Just one.
@UpsideDownFork with RUclips blocking links, they'll have a tough time pointing!
@@Biggest-dh1vr 😂 I can use Google 👍
Of course EVs have problems. They are new tec. In 50years ice vehicles will be a joke from this point of view.
Which part of the EV do you consider new tech?
@@UpsideDownFork The batteries, the control electronics and software, the ultra high power charging circuitry, the user interface, the high power low weight E motor and the departure from the standard vehicle drive train.
Bottom line, nobody wants electric cars, just look at how much they are selling for...if indeed they actually do sell. Soulless, stressful and inflexible motoring. Id have a teeny tiny one for a short work commute and keep my M140i for the weekends and european tours.
MY brother has had lots of EV's, his job is putting new charge points in. When his Audi EV broke down they couldnt move it for a few days, in the end they needed a specialist fork lift to pick it up and put it on the recovery wagon. How funny is that!
You're talking the same garbage as Barrie. Is your real name Exxon or Shell?
EV are microwave on wheels.
I will never have a battery electic car
I will wait for the real future in transport
You don't like microwaves?
It matters little what either of you think. It won't alter the fact that the purpose of net zero is to put an end to democracy as we know it. Download THE FUTURE OF URBAN COMSUMPTION IN A 1.5°C WORLD and tell me I'm wrong.
You're missing the point. EVs are a better solution, whether you want to reduce emissions or not.
@@UpsideDownFork No, you are. EVs are a better solution in some circumstances but not all. If you believed in democracy, you would want EVs and ICE cars to compete on equal terms. Did you read the document?
@@philipbrown9006 Democracy is great, isn't it?
We left the EU by a 52/48 split.
EV's are best in 95%+ cases.
I can charge my car from the solar on my roof. I have charged my car totally off grid as well just as a test case.
I've never produced my own diesel or petrol.
The argument that EV's control us more is nonsense. It's the complete opposite, we can be more independent and free from corporate greed.
Should we continue to feed the profits of big oil to use an inferior machine?
Let them compete on level grounds, sure. Human nature shows us that people will normally fight to retain the status quo and not want to break out of a comfort zone.
I've driven many thousands of different cars and personally owned more than 100. I'm not the ultimate car guru but i've seen my fair share. I've fully rebuilt engines as well as doing all my own maintenance on my own fleet. Any job that can be done on an ICE car, i've done it.
With my experience, there is no one that can convince me that EVs are a worse option than ICE.
Thanks for commenting and engaging. Hope to see you stop by for another video.
@@UpsideDownFork Yes, democracy is great, and you will miss it when it's gone. If you had read the document you would know that if the global elite get their way, you won't be allowed to own a car powered by electricity OR petrol.
