Did the higher ups at SEGA not learn ANYTHING from the last time they screwed with a big Sonic game’s production and deadline with Sonic 06?!, and this time an entire other company got caught in the crossfire. Hearing about what happened behind the scenes with Sonic Boom and what it could have been has made me really upset, we could’ve had an amazing experience but instead all that stuff happened. At least the Sonic franchise and BigRedButton have gotten back on their feet now a days, and hopefully things will get even better.
Didn't think a Sonic boom video would both make me laugh my butt off and almost make me cry. You did an excellent job showing what was happening behind the scenes.
No. If Sega would have properly supported Big Red Button and made effort to communicate, then the game may have had a chance. But this didn't happen obviously. Sega failed to support the developers entirely. Nintendo isn't responsible for games that they don't make. The blame lies 100% with Sega. The fact of the matter is that there were already existing Wii U exclusives from other third party companies. None of them were handles the way Sega handled Sonic Boom. There was no excuse for their misguidance.
Pretty much, that deal was the worst thing to happen to this series Sonic Synergy had a great chance to be on par with something like SA2, but Sega yet again blew it
While I personally like boom Amy rose and Sonic (I don’t like knuckles and tails) what made these characters more expressive weren’t their models but rather the fact red button just knew how to make expressive characters. basically is it if the designs weren’t hate it they wouldn’t be as expressive unless red button themselves Animating
I'm not a game developer, not even a big Sonic fan, but I had to pause for some minutes at the moment of the Wii U exclusivity deal notification because it genuinely infuriated me. Imagine being a developer working on what's perhaps the most ambitious Sonic game since Sonic Adventure and doing the best you can to deliver the best product, just for the big company to tell you that you'll have to make big compromises because it'll be an exclusive to the weakest console (by far) of its generation. It is outrageous.
This is a fantastic retrospective! The editing, the flow, and the script are all so well done, this is honestly one of the best Sonic retrospectives/videos I've seen in general. Everything about this video is very well paced and really informative. Also, your editing really is excellent, and your use of effects and choice of images/video clips are super on point. Great work, definitely subscribed.
It does feel weird that Boom is just gone, but with stuff like Modern, Classic, Movie and now Prime Sonic all co-existing, maybe we can get some sort of "Spiderverse" thing for Sonic and see the return of Boom that way, heck maybe even see AoStH and SatAM Sonic again. Doubt they'll ever bring back the brand as a whole, but I wouldn't mind seeing these versions of the characters live on. Oh well, at least they immigrated Sticks to the main canon.
Just like how kids are growing up and saying they loved 06, kids will grow up saying Boom was their favourite part of the franchise and that they want a revival. Mainly the cartoon to be fair but im sure there's... one or two who will defend Rise of Lyric. Its a never ending cycle but I hope it gets some appreciation for what it tried to do
41:32-41:40 there's one part you forgot, even if Sonic Boom was at a decent place, anyone with dish network sattlites couldn't even watch the show due to the 2014 Dish-Warner dispute that happened around the time of the series premiere and since dish network was a major television provider, you could see how much impact it had on the ratings.
@@LasagaMan nicely clarified. I never saw Boom on CN, my first dose came from Hulu and Netflix. Pretty much immediately loved it. There were directions I wished they would've taken, with a few more action packed episodes than we got. But with Season 3 gearing up to air on NF, I'm about to resubscribe. Would rather give my money straight to the dev department than the streaming service tho. They're worth it.
@@quintencornelissen2274 probably not anymore, no. Last I checked(sometime last year) they were 'working on' a s3, as well as Sonic Rangers, and some other show (I can't recall). Probably outdated info, it's been a year and no new word to my recollection. Unfortunate.
I feel that with enough care a new sonic boom for the more powerful PC (with maybe switch port of some kind) could be fantastic. More open level design, consistent humour and more combat options could help this sub franchise thrive. P.S. I was one of the few that liked the redesigns.
Sonic Boom The Series is honestly one of my favorite pieces of media out of the franchise. It has some of the funniest comedy I had ever watched and watching it today I still get a few good laughs. I think it has the best version of Amy, with her being more of her own person and that she has layers to her personality and that it isn’t just “I love Sonic.” Hell, I’m pretty sure Sonic and Amy were dating and the writers weren’t allowed to completely saying it because Sega were being stinkers again.
FINALLY! Someone explains and agrees how the redesigns were NOT total trash. I would've preferred Sega try to revitalize Sonic Boom, only if they were to let someone else handle it they should stay out of the way. Like how Bethesda was told to not get more directly involved with Doom Eternal than they had. And it worked! Doom Eternal was f-ing awesome! Also, the sports tape was to imply friction resistance for exercising....I think.
Yeah, I paused the video and genuinely thought why the hell people would hate the redesigns, the only one I see as really “bad” is knuckles, since it’s way too far of a departure But even then it’s a good design in the sense of representing what his role is
This whole ordeal genuinely makes me sad on so many layers. It's already depressing to have your work torn up to shreds by a publisher, but to have it shat on by obvious stupidity? I wouldn't be surprised if Sega was sued for this. Some scummy tactics aren't even in the video. They Forced BRB to add Shadow into the game, destroyed the origins plot line because they might want to do it in the future, forced in more fast-paced segments. I wouldnt have this much remorse for the developers if it wasn't for this stellar editing. Need ya back man.
This was a delight to watch from beginning to end. I could definitely tell a ton of research went into this, and your editing is still as top notch as ever. Proud of ya, pally. Keep up the good work.
This was really well edited and very enjoyable I’ve never played the boom games but I’ve heard so many awful things about them so it was very interesting to see an in-depth look into them
With all the Sonic Rangers leaks and stuff I'm praying that it works like Sonic Synergy somewhat. I know it may be open world but Synergy sounded really damn good and a transfer from that to open world sounds fun
I don't know how I knew someone made a retrospective, I just knew someone would have by now, glad I found it, great job. I remember being really excited that there'd be a modern platformer from some Jak and Daxter deba, and it looked interesting. Then I remember hearing about a bunch of people leaving Big Red Button and tales about how bad the game was.
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever watched. Top notch editing, no boring moments, informative and makes me see a new light on Sonic Boom. Definitely subscribed
Damn now I wish I could have played Sonic Synergy. That actually looked really cool. Thanks for this awesome video, it was really well paced and enjoyable throughout.
I'm actually really glad I got this game as I experienced one of the most poorly designed and rushed games in history. I do pity the developers though and I bet they feel just as bad as we do playing it.
Truly amazing work from you :D The whole is well-researched, well-edited and overall entertaining to watch You should be proud of yourself for this work hehe
what i would give to see a release of sonic synergy the way it was originally intended. it honestly sounds awesome and as much as i love the boom cartoon its just tragic that such a cool game concept was sacrificed to make it. i wish we could have had both.
The TV show was great, and I love sonic boom. The character redesigns are the best they've ever been and it could've really become something if Sega weren't such assholes to the developers...
When I played this game with my sister, we skipped about 60% of the game due to a glitch we didn't even realize happened until we beat the game. Me ans my sister said "Huh? This is so fucking short." Then we found out what happened and laughed. We knew it was gonna suck going in, but we bought it for shits and giggles. This game has been gaining dust since 2015 and I don't care about it anymore.
Well shit I'm glad I watched this. I feel so much sympathy for BigRedButton now. It's commendable that they managed to go through with all of... this... and came out mostly okay in the end. I really feel like they tried their absolute best, and that's great. Wow, now if anything could make me like Sonic Boom as a franchise more than the cartoon, it was definitely this video. Thank you so much, it was very informative ! Ngl now I feel like going to find myself some Sonic Boom plushies, haha ! I do like their design and energy, minus all the unnecessary athletic tape-
Incredible video. Personally the games never interested me too much but the show was incredible. Season 2 was full of high quality jokes and episodes, and it's just so sad that the games and ultimately sega are the reasons the show died.
Rise of lyric went down in flames and took the rest of sonic boom with it. It's a shame. This budding spin off series was killed before it even had a chance and a budding passionate development team fell apart along with it.
Watching this in 2022 is a little fascinating. You point out the horrors of the sonic movie, but since then it got a redesign thanks to fan feedback, a sequel which was awesome, and is now going on to make a third film and a tv series and is arguably one of the best things to come from sonic in a long while.
This is a tragedy, and it's all Sega's fault for meddling with the project too much. Edit: Honestly, you're right about that, it could've been alot worse. If the game was released in that state for the other platforms aswell, it would've been the Sonic '06 catastrophe all over again.
All Sega had to do with the Nintendo deal was to make a spinoff for either the wii u or 3ds with shattered crystal and leave rise of lyric out of the Nintendo deal and let big red button work on the platforms that would run well with cryengine and we could’ve gotten a great game.
51:29 I want to remind everyone. I couldn't even see the episodes unless it was downloaded from a different site. That was how hard it was to find the show episodes.
This is the *definitive* video I send my friends when they wanna learn what exactly went wrong behind the scenes of this game. You did an AMAZING job documenting everything, keep up the amazing work now!
You can add another casualty to this: The death of the Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 remakes. Apparently, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric's failure caused the supposedly remakes of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 to be cancelled in 2015.
I'm about to outdo everyone who commented on this video. So to celebrate Sonic Boom's 5 year anniversary today, *WARNING: Hold on to your ass. Long and passionate comment about Sonic Boom incoming!* 5 years. . . Jesus. I can't believe it's been exactly a half decade ago that the subset franchise that is Sonic Boom was unleashed upon us into to the world. I swear it only feels like a couple yesteryears or so. . . Sonic Boom . . .still has a lot of untapped potential; I can not stress that enough, especially via social media. I already knew the hole history behind Sonic Boom, and the more I'm reminded of it, the more I become distraught by it. If only the 3 game partnership with Nintendo never happened. If that very derision didn't occur, things might of gone a bit differently, and probably for the better. *THANK FUCKING CHRIST* BigRedButton didn't go belly up after Boom: Rise of Lyric's release; they don't deserve it, and I'm very pleased that they're in a better place now. It's a shame that thanks to the reception of Boom: RoL (despite me thinking the game is no were near as bad as people are making it out to be, and is a textbook definition of an average 5/10 video game), a decent amount of people didn't give the other factions of this subset franchise a chance. Indeed Sonic Boom has a hole is no were near as bad as it seems, in fact its mostly the opposite. Despite the mixed results of it all, the stuff that were good about Sonic Boom were REALLY good: Boom: Fire and Ice, Dash 2: Sonic Boom, the criminally short lived Archie comic book, and of course its primary faction, the TV show (especially season 2). Overtime the series proved that it can improve upon itself and can reach a full redemption arc from Boom: RoL's disastrous launch if SEGA stuck to their guns and kept going with it. I mean, shit, despite Cartoon Network's piss poor treatment towards the TV show, it managed to be nominated a few time and actually won some! The show was finally starting to find its footing in season 2. Plus thanks to all that, Boom Sonic and Sticks got the honor of receiving art from Yuji Uekawa, Sticks got to appear in non Boom material like Mario and Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Sonic Runners, JP website Sonic Channel's Sonic Comic line, the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers board game, and probably a few other I'm forgetting ATM, and Boom Sonic appearing along side with Modern and Classic Sonic in promo art (they still use that promo art one their RUclips channel banner to this day). So why the hell stop there!? Noticing your pinned comment, and the sentence, "The Sonic Boom story might not be over yet", I. . .concur. . .I believe that there is actually still hope that it'll return. Despite the recent interview with SEGA's Directer of Animation, Yuki Kusumoto, if their's enough demand for Sonic Boom to come back, then it possible. The growing following the show that it's been garnering recently on the social media as mentioned in this video is evident of that. Plus the recent DVD, Amazon and iTunes releases of the show, if it does well in sales, could potentially bring it back as well. So for those who want Boom to come back, *GO BUY THE SHOW ON DVD(s), AMAZON, AND/OR iTUNES!!! DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO LET THEM KNOW YOU WANT MORE VIA SOCIAL MEDIA OR ANY OTHER WAY TO CONTACT THEM!!!* I also noticed that the show is available to purchase on RUclips as well, so go buy that too to show support if you like. Not a 100% guarantee it'll work, but it's worth a shot. Ever since 2015, SEGA and Sonic Team has found this new found love for the fans than ever before, stuff listed in 54:13 and non-Sonic related things SEGA has been doing is evident of this, hence why I think it's possible. If it does return for a third season, I'm hoping that SEGA would either consider putting the show on a different channel and/or Netflix instead of Cartoon Network. Or maybe take the Sonic Mania Adventures & Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive route they're currently going and produce a ongoing series of shorts to garner more interest. Start with either of these two options and then expand to other mediums from there, instead of blowing their load from the very start last time. Doing this could potentially set a special spark that ignites a second boom. I would definitely like to see more stuff out the Boom series, outside from the show; more games that are good, merch, a IDW comic book series, . . .the possibilities are endless! Hopefully they'll consider bringing Boom back someday so it can finally reach the redemption arc it oh-so aims to achieve. Jumping back to Boom: RoL, I'm one of those crazy fuckers that want to see a remake; the "re-imagining" kind of remake. A remake that's basically what the game could of been if the 3 game partnership with Nintendo never occurred. A remake that has almost all of the scrapped plans/concepts talked about in this video and combines it with what was in the original. *Sonic Boom: Synergy* anyone? In this day in age of remakes, I agree with Clement and think it would be way more interesting that SEGA do remakes of bad Sonic games, and make them good. It's risky, very ballsy, but different, and it could possibly work. It could also shut up fans that complain about this current decade of Sonic playing it safe (despite Sonic Lost World, in terms of gameplay, the entirety of Boom, and the custom avatar from Sonic Forces are the antitheses of playing it safe, but whatever). The recent Sonic the Hedgehog P-06 fan remaster is a good example if this. What do you guys think? Told ya this was long. Thanks for making this video! A well put together video that quite honestly deserves more views! Happy 5th Birthday to the Sonic Boom franchise! A franchise that deserves a second shot at redemption. Now will you excuse me, I'll be continuing to ask the good folks at SEGA and the Sonic PR team to bring Boom back.
This is my second time watching the video and it's still top notch stuff. I can see you put a lot of effort into this video with the great editing to tons of research done. Amazing video
What an excellent video. I'm shocked at just how impressive the editing is as it is among the best I have seen on RUclips. Also you deserve a lot of props for actually making a retrospective rather than a pretentious game review masquerading as one. Learned tons of stuff from this video. I have never played any of the Boom games and so I have always been indifferent to them. I had no idea how insanely troubled the development was and how much of their original ideas had to be axed. It's quite depressing and that feeling is further compounded by how much utter vitriol was lobbed directly at Big Red Button. I wish they could have made the game that they wanted to make, but too bad Sega had to be Sega and Sega everything up. Anyway, awesome job. Your channel seems really underrated in terms of views and subscribers so I hope a lot more start coming your way.
This has been like hella informational and I applaud you sincerely for all the effort put into it. Know it's been three years, still. Oh by the way, the Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom is pretty alright, I think it's fun if you like collecting characters, like the the fisrt one and even the mobile Sonic Forces game.
Chris Senn's name sent chills down my spine. Space Queens immediately echoed through my head and I felt a rush of adrenaline come through. It was weird.

@@rez9914 If SEGA wasn't such a shit publisher, Sonic wouldn't need to rely on Nintendo for life support
Pretty much, that deal was the worst thing to happen to this series
Sonic Synergy had a great chance to be on par with something like SA2, but Sega yet again blew it
This is genuinely really really heartbreaking to see as a creator....
I'm sad, We would have loved Sonic Boom...
Are you a video game creator?
@@SuperJumpBroswell it's too late
creator of what
I really wish the redesigns weren't so hated. I think these are probably the most expressive 3D Sonic models that exist.
Plus, they look good. Better than the Modern designs to be honest.
While I personally like boom Amy rose and Sonic (I don’t like knuckles and tails)
what made these characters more expressive weren’t their models but rather the fact red button just knew how to make expressive characters.
basically is it if the designs weren’t hate it they wouldn’t be as expressive unless red button themselves Animating
@@samariathemaniac theres no way the boom design are better than modern but its your opinion though
I really loved the redesigns to be honest.
The fact this video hasn't gotten past 1,000 views is a true crime
guess what my dude
@@Paper_Rag Le past 10,000 has arrived
Or even 100k tbh
I'm not a game developer, not even a big Sonic fan, but I had to pause for some minutes at the moment of the Wii U exclusivity deal notification because it genuinely infuriated me. Imagine being a developer working on what's perhaps the most ambitious Sonic game since Sonic Adventure and doing the best you can to deliver the best product, just for the big company to tell you that you'll have to make big compromises because it'll be an exclusive to the weakest console (by far) of its generation. It is outrageous.
Fun fact: BigRedButton were going to create a Crash Bandicoot game named "Crash 'N Burn", but it was cancelled due to Sonic BOOM's failure.
That’s… really ironic
In the worst way possible
a VERY well edited and paced documentary, i knew about the overall fiasco but i learned a lot more details with this!
Amazin job
This is a fantastic retrospective! The editing, the flow, and the script are all so well done, this is honestly one of the best Sonic retrospectives/videos I've seen in general. Everything about this video is very well paced and really informative. Also, your editing really is excellent, and your use of effects and choice of images/video clips are super on point. Great work, definitely subscribed.
I love the Sonic Boom cartoon, it's one of the funniest family shows I've seen, I love the writing and the chemistry the characters have
Me too man.
Oh well, at least they immigrated Sticks to the main canon.
that was ‘cool’, pun entirely intended
i miss sonic boom, so much
really want them to put sticks in the mainline stuff just so I could see her again
Same
lmao
well look at that, its canon
Sticks is canon Amy references her in frontiers theres definitely a chance of her coming to mainline games
Just like how kids are growing up and saying they loved 06, kids will grow up saying Boom was their favourite part of the franchise and that they want a revival. Mainly the cartoon to be fair but im sure there's... one or two who will defend Rise of Lyric. Its a never ending cycle but I hope it gets some appreciation for what it tried to do
i can't express how proud of you i am. watching you put this together was amazing and i can't wait to see where your lil heart takes you next ❤️
41:32-41:40 there's one part you forgot, even if Sonic Boom was at a decent place, anyone with dish network sattlites couldn't even watch the show due to the 2014 Dish-Warner dispute that happened around the time of the series premiere and since dish network was a major television provider, you could see how much impact it had on the ratings.
quick correction to anyone reading this, it's actually refereed to as the 2014 Dish-Turner Dispute, not the 2014 Dish-Warner dispute
@@ytsuxmuhd4998 there is no season 3 i wish there was but there isnt
@@quintencornelissen2274 probably not anymore, no. Last I checked(sometime last year) they were 'working on' a s3, as well as Sonic Rangers, and some other show (I can't recall).
Probably outdated info, it's been a year and no new word to my recollection.
Unfortunate.
This video is as underrated as the show! Both are amazing!
Agreed
I agree
I guarantee the guy who had their “childhood ruined” by Sonic Boom was at least 30 years old.
I feel that with enough care a new sonic boom for the more powerful PC (with maybe switch port of some kind) could be fantastic. More open level design, consistent humour and more combat options could help this sub franchise thrive.
P.S. I was one of the few that liked the redesigns.
I just wish sega never made a deal with Nintendo because the game could’ve been really great and could’ve been one of the best sonic games out there
I like the redesigns too.
@@rez9914 i think it was nintendo’s fault
@@Chaos_867 Nah, Nintendo and Sega signed that contract together, still Sega's fault
this is the most comprehensive retrospective on the whole Boom fiasco out there, nice one
Big Red Button is located on Apollo St. My guess is that's why "Rise of Lyric" was code named Project Apollo.
Yeah, I paused the video and genuinely thought why the hell people would hate the redesigns, the only one I see as really “bad” is knuckles, since it’s way too far of a departure
But even then it’s a good design in the sense of representing what his role is
This is one of the best videos i've ever seen on the website
This whole ordeal genuinely makes me sad on so many layers. It's already depressing to have your work torn up to shreds by a publisher, but to have it shat on by obvious stupidity? I wouldn't be surprised if Sega was sued for this. Some scummy tactics aren't even in the video. They Forced BRB to add Shadow into the game, destroyed the origins plot line because they might want to do it in the future, forced in more fast-paced segments. I wouldnt have this much remorse for the developers if it wasn't for this stellar editing. Need ya back man.
The tv show was absolutely legendary
This was a delight to watch from beginning to end. I could definitely tell a ton of research went into this, and your editing is still as top notch as ever.
Proud of ya, pally. Keep up the good work.
This was fantastically made, nice job dude.
Surprising how the Sonic movie ended up being... Surprisingly good...
Big Emplemon vibes. Great video, man. Watching it again.
I was going to say the same thing.
Bro wtf this video is so well made why only 20k views? I hope you break into the algorithm soon
dude, your criminally underrated
I'm actually really glad I got this game as I experienced one of the most poorly designed and rushed games in history. I do pity the developers though and I bet they feel just as bad as we do playing it.
Jesus this editing is god tier
This was amazing in every sense of the word, well done!
Wow. Surprised your content isn't more well known. This video is REALLY well done.
Subbed.
That EmpLemon inspiration is something I never thought I wanted, but absolutely needed.
Why doesn't this have more views?
Yeah, I could really tell there was some EmpLemon’s type editing and pacing here and I’m all for it, I love that style
Good video. Tbh Sonic Boom was kind of enjoyable in the series for being a more wacky side to the characters, but not as a game.
Truly amazing work from you :D The whole is well-researched, well-edited and overall entertaining to watch
You should be proud of yourself for this work hehe
what i would give to see a release of sonic synergy the way it was originally intended. it honestly sounds awesome and as much as i love the boom cartoon its just tragic that such a cool game concept was sacrificed to make it. i wish we could have had both.
extremely underviewed video. loved the emplemon inspired editing, looking forward from seeing more from you!
The TV show was great, and I love sonic boom. The character redesigns are the best they've ever been and it could've really become something if Sega weren't such assholes to the developers...

Idk, the dude isn’t charitable to Sonic but he’s nowhere near as hateful towards Sonic as most people at like IGN or whatever
@@Morgan_of_the_Maxilla fair enough tbh
Now we need a "Sonic Boom Retrospective: 5 years later Retrospective: 5 years later"
The editing on this video is crazy; This was so fun to watch. Great video!
Finally got around to watching this, great video!
absolutely masterful, wonderful job
Well shit I'm glad I watched this. I feel so much sympathy for BigRedButton now. It's commendable that they managed to go through with all of... this... and came out mostly okay in the end. I really feel like they tried their absolute best, and that's great.
Wow, now if anything could make me like Sonic Boom as a franchise more than the cartoon, it was definitely this video. Thank you so much, it was very informative !
Ngl now I feel like going to find myself some Sonic Boom plushies, haha ! I do like their design and energy, minus all the unnecessary athletic tape-
I’m three minutes in and I’m in awe of this editing. Marvelous job so far.
Even after so many failures and falls, Sonic the hedgehog does not give up and gets up. Cool video bro
Underrated RUclipsr. You deserve more than 1k subs.
Wow, this video so well made. This is so good
God this is good content I can't wait to see what you do in the future
Aside from a few audio breaks the production value of this video is amazing!
This is a tragedy, and it's all Sega's fault for meddling with the project too much.
Edit: Honestly, you're right about that, it could've been alot worse. If the game was released in that state for the other platforms aswell, it would've been the Sonic '06 catastrophe all over again.
2:24 that part of the video aged poorly
Sonic boom was missed potential but the show has a good amounts of inside jokes that'll make you laugh.
All Sega had to do with the Nintendo deal was to make a spinoff for either the wii u or 3ds with shattered crystal and leave rise of lyric out of the Nintendo deal and let big red button work on the platforms that would run well with cryengine and we could’ve gotten a great game.
8 MONTHS LATE SQUAD WHERE YOU AT?!?!?!?!?
Long and passionate comment about Sonic Boom incoming!*
5 years. . .
Now will you excuse me, I'll be continuing to ask the good folks at SEGA and the Sonic PR team to bring Boom back.
ah sega a company that survives out of dumb luck

Watched this on a whim. Best decision I’ve made all week.
In defense of sonic boom now the characters were more animator friendly
