    Different eras. Joe Montana didn’t stand back there in a pocket 10 yards behind a line of scrimmage and have all day to toss passes. He scrambled, threw off balance, ran the ball in, suffered multiple injuries. He came very close to six Super Bowls, the fifth time against the Giants the 49ers were on their way to scoring when he got sacked and injured and the final times with Kansas City were he played very well but had no supporting cast.

    • @benthekeeshond545
      @benthekeeshond545 2 года назад

      The completely biased refs in Washington DC took one away from us. The Vikings took out our 49ers in the year 1987. The 49ers didn't play well but nevertheless, the Vikings achieved their victory fair and square. Then the 49ers lost to the NY criminals, 1990 because the criminals were out to hurt Joe in order to win the game in which they did.
      You are right! Joe could have won 6 SBs within 10 years.
      While Tom Cheatdy took almost 1/4 century and many proven cheating scandals to win 7. If we condone cheating, yes, Tom Cheatdy is the most accomplished QB in football history.

    • @commanderthorkilj.amundsen3426
      @commanderthorkilj.amundsen3426 Год назад

      @creepshow My statement holds. There are a number of quarterbacks who demonstrated skills throughout their career that Brady simply does not have. He does not throw well on the run, does not scramble, or evade defenders like Elway, Young, Tarkenton, Marino, Bradshaw, Staubach, Lamonica, or Joe Montana. It is fortuitous that we have excellent game footage of these players to demonstrate this.
      Your idolization of Tom is obvious. Brady has been untouched by defenses most his career; he’s a highly protected tosser who’s spent an entire career well-back of the line.
      Most NFL games play out in reasonable weather, only a few in extreme cold or in snow--so sounds like you just have a deep need to cuddle up with Tom, and keep his balls warm!

    • @pianoman9421

      Brady's never had a supporting cast like Montana had and he got rid of the ball faster than anyone else in the league. "All day to throw" was rarely the case with Brady, and he was statistically the most accurate quarterback in the league, even on tight-window throws in his last two years with Tampa Bay. Brady is demonstrably the most effective quarterback in the history of football and it's not close.
      And if you think Brady's been untouched by defenses, you must not have seen the Super Bowls against the Giants, Seahawks, or Falcons where they were running through the Patriots' offensive line like a sieve and Brady was sliding and dodging in the pocket like his life depended on it (it did). You must not have seen Brady's first postseason game where he got rocked on basically the same sideline hit that almost killed Drew Bledsoe but popped right back up. Brady is a warrior, to the point that he earned Ray Lewis's respect.

    Qbs in this era wouldn't last in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. Corners can play physical on WRs. Meaning the QB had to hold on to the ball much longer. Which results into hits and Slam. Defenses was able to knock the QB down and slam them. Rodgers concussion, P Manning neck, Brady no mobility, and Brees wouldn't be able to have a 5 second and throw offense resulting to them being injured alot. The rules benefits the qb and offenses that is why getting 5,000 yards in season is not what it use to be.

    Brady and Montana are both QB legends. When determining who's the best QB there are so many variables to consider. #1supporting cast who had more talent around them? I'd give the edge to Montana, he played on some hall of fame stacked teams both sides of the ball. #2 salary cap era, there was no salary cap when Montana played. #3 coaching both players had great coaches, that's a wash. I think Brady's the goat, but just to put him in conversation with Montana is an honor in itself.

    If one is honest with oneself. They will realize that there is really no debate. You will not find one Montana fan displaying the actual numbers. It's not that close. The Montana supporter (in this debate) is left with intangible qualities which is left to what if's, conjectures and opinions. We can't qualify those attributes. They desperately try to isolate Montana SB performance and record over brady's. Yes. He was a better performer in the SB. But you must take the entire career of a QB. Not pick and choose what parts fit our argument. That is not fair.
    Be honest. The history and present is backed by the numbers. Compare the resumes. Oh. And Brady is not done! Argument? Is there really an argument on who the G.O.AT QB is? I say no (emphatically).

      Compare them based off of their era, 4,000 yards today is what 3,000 yards was before (maybe less). If you go by how they compare against QBs in their respective eras statistically then it looks a lot better for Montana, but stats are in favor of most modern QBs which is why Kirk Cousins & Derek Carr have better stats than 95% of 80s QBs. 4 Rings in the 80s & 6 Rings after 00s aren’t the same thing as well.

      Should it also be mentioned that Joe Montana had the best all-time receiver in NFL History to throw to?
      Jerry Rice still has 6,616 more yards than the 2nd place guy. (Larry Fitzgerald, whose still playing!)
      Brady had number 4 all-time receiver in Randy Moss, but only for 50 games. Rice played 16 years for San Fran.
      (Full disclosure: Not sure how many games with Montana but, I'll bet my life it's way more than 50. They played together for 8 yrs)
      Wes Welker ranks number 50 all-time and Gronk ranks 104th. Welker only played 6 years with the Patriots.
      I would dare say, Brady did it with much less. . .
      And after 6 Rings, he's still not done!

      Keeping it reel . . .
      You also have to factor Joe faced tougher opponents ig. Brady played a lot more starting seasons and teams in his division finished with 10 wins less than the teams in Montana’s divisions. He had a free ticket to the playoffs every year, not to discredit him Bc I think he would’ve won regardless.

    Because of the QB rule changes and official protection of the QB during the Brady era, I'd have to say Montana. It seems like there was always a rule change when the Patriots didn't make the SB or Brady got hurt:) How good would Montana had been if he had Brady rules? The 1st 3 Patriots SB wins were because of the defense and they were during the time that Belichick spied on the other team. The last 2 wins were because the opponent/coaches faded down the stretch. If the Patriots won, there was always that "one" play. So you could say the opponents lost their SB more than the Patriots won. When the Niners won, there was no doubt. The coaches kinda wash one another out. But Montana did great under more than 1 coach. And Montana was more athletic. So Montana is my choice.

    Joe played in an era where there were few rules that protected QB's and where receivers could be lit up with helmets. He didn't have the height, body and durability of Brady. He also played in an era where there was no zero salary cap. So the best players migrated to the playoff teams. Which is why you almost always saw the Niners and Cowboys in the NFC title game. The teams that appeared in the playoffs back then would kick the butts of almost anyone who is playing today. There was no limit on the amount of hall of famers you could have on your team. Joe had to beat some incredible teams just to get to the NFC title game. Also, Brady's super bowl wins have all come by no more than 6 points. I think the fact that Joe has two where he totally destroyed the opposition has to count for something.

      In any game on the line I would always bet on Joe Montana. But his discussion should not be limited to quarterbacks who won Super Bowls, because as we know winning games is a team effort. Brady had three occasions where either the place kicker actually won the game for him or the defense did. Dan Marino would be included in any discussion of great quarterbacks: he had the best arm of anyone and great field sense. His 5000 yard 48 touchdown season in ‘84 featured many throws far downfield, and into the end zone, he wasn’t protected either.

    Montana had a quick accurate release, can throw on the run, ballet like footwork & commanding in the pocket.
    Pundits label him as a system QB but he was surrounded by multi skilled players like RB who can catch out of the backfield. His receivers were not speedsters or height mismatches. Rice was slow & Taylor wasn’t Randy Moss.
    Bill says Brady is the featured weapon, but then adds Randy Moss & Gronk on the line. Both superstars with size & speed. Brady is in a system too. Receivers that block, TEs that can catch like WR & RB who can catch out of the backfield. NE has receivers pulling screens, rub routes & cross cross routes all 2 get them open.
    That is a system. Football is a system.

      Do you wonder why that is? Surely it’s not a coincidence. Easy answer, free agency and a CAP. The NFL was built to stop dynasties from happening. What the patriots pulled off should not have been possible in the modern era.

    Right now (before Super Bowl LI), I would give the edge to Joe Montana, mainly because he was the main cog for a dynasty, much as Brady has been for the last 15 years. Montana also was undefeated in the Super Bowl, going 4-0, and was also unintercepted. Montana also played in a more competitive era when it was a little more difficult to qualify for the post-season, mainly due to larger divisions, though Montana played most of his career in a 4-team division, and for most of his 49er career, he had Rams teams that were annual playoff contenders, and then the Saints joined the group of contenders in 1987, making things even tougher for Montana and the 49ers, yet they usually conquered the NFC West.
    However, a great case can also be made for Brady as the best (I have him at #3 behind Unitas before SB LI). While Montana made it to seven conference championship games, winning four, Brady has WON seven conference championship games (in an astounding ten tries), has had a changing offense for much of his career, and has now led teams to two more Super Bowls than any other QB has since the inauguration of the Super Bowl in the 1966 season (no other QB has gotten to more than five).
    All that said, if Brady leads the Patriots to a win in Super Bowl LI, he would then leapfrog both Montana and Terry Bradshaw, the only other 4x Super Bowl winning QBs, with a fifth Super Bowl crown, which would probably crown him the greatest QB ever. He's already had one shot at immortality following the 2007 season, and his team fell short of completing the perfect season in Super Bowl XLII, though Brady did put his team ahead in the final three minutes. Now he has another shot at doing something nobody at his position has ever accomplished, a fifth Super Bowl title. If he gets it, he would almost certainly be acclaimed the best ever. But if he doesn't, he falls to 4-3 in the Super Bowl and joins a dubious list of great QBs who have lost three Super Bowls (Tarkenton, Elway, and Kelly).

    • @jjtruth3507
      @jjtruth3507 7 лет назад +2

      Montana played against far more vicious defenses with fewer protective rules. Brady is playing in a weaker era where defenses and coaching is concerned. If you're just counting hardware & records then Brady is greater. If you count heart & hustle Montana was greater. Remember that Montana was a smaller qb and used everything he had effectively. He played under different set of rules.

    • @cjs83172
      @cjs83172 7 лет назад +1

      The thing that gave Brady an edge even before his miracle comeback in Super Bowl LI is the difference in the talent around him against what Montana had around him. Montana had Pro Bowlers and All-Pros around him his entire career, including his two-year stint in Kansas City. On the other hand, with rare exception (Randy Moss and Corey Dillon being the most noteworthy exceptions), Brady has accomplished what he has with players who are above-average, at best. So I think the talent level around the QB cancelled out the argument in Montana's favor regarding the defenses he faced and the rules favoring QBs, some of which were enacted after Brady's knee was taken out in the first game of the 2008 season.
      I will say that the 2002 realignment has made it much easier for teams to stay on top for much longer, which is why Brady and the Patriots, whatever team Peyton Manning QB'd for, Big Ben and the Steelers, and a few other teams have stayed on top for longer. With every division only having four teams and all but two of every team's opponents predetermined years in advance by division rotation, it is easier for a team to stay on top for a longer period of time.

As of the end of the 2016 season, Brady is fourth all-time in career passing yards, fourth in career touchdown passes, and third in career passer rating. His career postseason record is 25-9, winning more playoff games than any other quarterback, and he has appeared in more playoff games than any player at any position. DROP THE MIC!!!!!! Ref. I take Joe for 3 reasons. 1. When he went to the playoffs... he won the super bowl. He did it all the time except for the time he was with the chiefs. He is what 3-0 in super bowls. 2. Between the spy gate, deflate gate, the fact Brady takes supplements to help his performance, they have not been banned yet by the league but soon will. 3. Joe Montana didn't need a kicker to win games. Joe had to take them down the whole field and win. In the clutch at any time during his time with the 49ers, nobody was better than joe.
    Not to mention the rule changes have helped Tom Brady alot. The guys can't put hands on the receivers and it's easier to find them when not touched. You can't even hit the qb in today's league.

    Montana is the goat. no need for a kicker to bail him out or rule changes, aka the Brady rule that got him started. it is almost flag football now. Brady wouldn't survive in the 70s, or 80s. Bret farve got the last of real football and never missed a game, still holds the record. Montana is not a system qb coz he took KC to the playoffs. Steve young had rice longer and only won 1. Brady loses a year to being hurt and still the patriots won 11. this year 3and 1 without him. Bill is the reason they are so good. 2 loses to the giants and should have been to seatle, dumbest coaching decison in history coz NFL didn't want Lynch to be MVP. Montana beat good teams in the NFC, they won almost every year in the 80s. where is the dominant teams Brady beat? Peyton had Houston, Jacksonville, and Tennesse, Brady had jets, bills, and Miami, both had free runs to the big game.
