I always saw this as Wonka's method of gaging the people he was with to a greater extent. Notice how the only ones who didn't directly complain were Charlie and his Grandfather, although they did grow uncomfortable as he drudged on through the scene. To Wonka, this could be construed as Charlie and his Grandfather being the least like everyone else, and by extension the most like himself - which was exactly what he was looking for in a successor. Additionally, Wonka simulates things getting out of hand, as is articulated by the lyrics of the poem. Wonka wished to see how the group reacted when things got further, and further out of their direct control, stretching to an uncanny madness. Charlie and his Grandfather remained calm, and even said that the journey was fun. This was the best possible response in Wonka's mind, considering the fact that bouts and outbursts of madness was common place in his company. To me, this was the reason this scene existed.
The_Butler_ Did_It Hate to ruin the good theory but according to the director, the children had no clue what was going to happen in this scene. He wanted genuine fear when the lights dropped and the singing started. Same with the chocolate room scene. Those expressions were real because that was their very first glimpse of thw candy room.
@@KimmyQueen The only thing that would make me think it was scripted was the fact that he picked the perfect time to start singing, since the scene sort of changes the second he starts.
@@nbuehster It was scripted. The children also knew that a scene was coming up but they didn't exactly know what was going to happen. They used that trick several times throughout shooting to get genuine children reactions. The scary tunnel sequence was written to teach children an very important lesson that the world and even your life most of the time is not in your control and that things can get confusing and messed up really fast and that you can panic and get stressed really fast, or you can enjoy the ride
Yeah well I was a kid back then and the chicken getting it’s head cut off messed me up quite a bit...been a struggle with depression ever since..not good for a growing brain..to be under fear and stress..doesn’t show you anything or prepares you for shit..just scares you and causes your seratonin levels to get fkd that can cause long term damage in some kids, I doubt any kid under 10 got the rather obtuse analogy.
there are EXACTLY enough seats on the boat for the number of passengers... but this is after Augustus Gloop already fell into the river and was sucked up by the pipes... so did Willy Wonka know that one of the children was going to drop out before the boat ride?
The only thing that would make this scene, scarier would be if, in the river scene, Augustus didn't go up the pipe, but if he just disappeared somewhere. Then, when everyone's in the tunnel, they hit a bump. Then they somehow find out that they ran over Augustus.
Oh my god Im happy to finally finding this gem. As a young dude who just found d'n'b (2007?..) this voice sample was in one of my fav' d'n'b song's intro, and it fits so perfectly. And the crowd erupts... When he says "not a speck of light is showing, so the danger must be growing. By the fires of hell are glowing.".... On the stage, the infamous "A" lit up, probably 30 feet high on a sheet that covered the entire stage, slowly. The speech went on, and everyone was jumping and below this mosh pit was starting. Ppl stood up in the nosebleeds, and cheered. "AND THEYRE CERTAINLY NOT SHOWING ANY SIGNS THAT THEY ARE SLOWING..screams..." *Doomday starts* "GO" *BOOM* Then the bass hits and it rattles the giant sheet. As it does it drops, and you can see the waves from the bass created. Then there's Atreyu, all members, just jamming out. Taste of Choas tour 2008, OKC.
