Funny story about Black Hole. When Kanami wrote it, she asked Akane, the drummer, how fast her drumming was. Akane told her about 185 beats per minute. Typically, Kanami wrote the song with a 220 beats per minute pace to get Akane to improve her drumming techniques. That's how Kanami does everything. Always pushing herself and the other bandmembers to improve themselves and always "do their best".

@@Amiekinz4ever The band like to play an April Fool joke. The best they ever did was to form another band, Band-Maiko (a maiko is a trainee geisha), who wore traditional Japanese clothing and played both trad and modern instruments. They made a 6 song EP and 2 MV's, the most popular being an adaptation of the song you reacted to recently, Secret My Lips, which became SECRET MAIKO LIPS. It's an outstanding MV. Luckily for the world, Band-Maid reformed a couple of days later, Miku did a similarly detailed prank a couple of years ago by announcing her solo career...or rather, the appearance of her alter ego, Cluppo, who not only invented her own genre, HippyPop, but came up with 5 or 6 songs that were fun, excellent and unique. Again, luckily, she then rejoined Band-Maid!

These pandemic concerts were a delightful treat. The Maids really lifted many spirits in those dark days! Songs like this make me glad that I’ve listened to bands like Yes, and Rush, so much over the years. I can take it all in easier and appreciate it right from the start. Some fans, not used to music such as Band Maid has put out in recent years, find it a hard listen, at least at first. But it’s wonderfully controlled, melodic, chaos to my ears!

They use some tracks live but for the things you would expect: keyboards, strings, sound effects & some tertiary ambient and weird effects guitar, 3rd and /or 4th vocal harmonies, etc. Depends on the song. But all the main stuff is just them playing. And, frankly, for a song like Black Hole, that makes it even harder to play live. They have to be right on every time.
They've played that song live quite often and and it's always astounding.

As others have said, the Maids livestreamed a few concerts during the covid lockdowns hence no audience (One of the shows was released on DVD). This music video was for J-LOD, a Japanese government programme to help artistes during the covid lockdowns. The government gave grants to produce a video. One of the grant stipulations was it has to be 5 minutes long or more, hence two songs.

I think the most brilliant part of "Black Hole" is when you realize that the music is playing what the lyrics are saying. The song is literally talking about falling into a Black Hole, with quite some degree of accuracy (heck, it even talks about time dilation.... damn....). All this while somehow talking about some relationship at the same time. (Miku is simply amazing).
Now as you're reading the lyrics, listen to what the instruments are doing. It's all done to describe the chaos of falling into a black hole! That has just got to be an ultimate-genius move.

Band-Maid helped keep us sane during the plague years with a number of streamed live gigs without an audience, bless them and their thoughtfulness. The reason they released 2 songs together was because the Japanese government offered bonus payments to artists if they released 2 rather than 1 track at a time. MANNERS is a great showcase of everything from Kanami's compositional skills through Miku's lyrics, to the actual playing and singing abilities of the whole band. BLACK HOLE was a challenge from Kanami to really push everyone's skills to the limit, with Akane listing 6 levels of drumming and deciding BLACK HOLE was level 6, which she called 'Hell'. The final section is a 220 BPM blast and their fastest piece. It is also. like MANNERS, a musical masterpiece. I enjoy your enthusiasm and appreciation of Band-Maid's skills but hope that, after your reaction, you watch and enjoy the songs as whole pieces too as they are all masterful compositions that I know someone with your musical knowledge will appreciate on a few levels.

You left Akane hanging with the final symbol crash 🙂. When they dropped the Unseen World album in 2021, we had seen a couple music videos beforehand, so we knew a little bit what was coming. But then the songs kept getting heavier and more progressive as we got through the album, culminating at the end with Black Hole. This by the way was the fastest beat that Akane had ever played to date. Unseen World remains a masterpiece to this day!

This was from an online concert during Covid, when they couldn't appear before an audience. For two years they couldn't tour, so this was the Plan B. Manners and Black Hole are such a contrast -- funky, groovy Manners, followed by frantic chaotic Black Hole. Akane hit 220 bpm -- her fastest speed. Kanami had asked Akane her fastest speed, and Akane said around 190 ... so Kanami wrote Black Hole at 220 bpm to push her. Akane wrote five parts for the drums -- labelled from "Easy" to "Hell". The other band members, of course, chose "Hell" and so Akane had to push herself to learn how to play it. But she made it. They all push themselves -- and each other -- to become better musicians.

Wow, are you like the queen of reactors? Such fun. Kanami, lead guitar, writes these things and the other rework their parts with total freedom. They've got a killer process with a genius at the beginning and four monsters being as creative as the can be. They use instrumental backing tracks create by Kanami (also a keyboard player and audio programmer). I assume the layer vocals on the backing tracks are added in the studio. But still, the songs are 100% Band Maid. Check out the MVs for From Now On and Blooming, and the live video for Corallium.

Yes, LIVE-To Tape. It's one of the ones released during the COVID Clamp Down. But they are playing to backing track, they always have. That's one of the reasons they're so tight. Also one of the reasons they gather around Akane and make funny faces. It's to get her to laugh and f*ck up the hard part. Not a chance! Once she's locked into the Kanami's backing tracks she is a machine! But they don't have to use them. The airlines once lost the bag with the computer in it, but the show went on anyway. They just rearranged the setlist. They were more worried about the sneakers they had bought in L.A. than the computer. One time Akane accidentally unplugged herself and missed starting the song. It was hilarious!

“Manners” is groovy and funky rock, still very much progressive. “Black Hole” hooks the unconventional metal fans. The Maids have wide appeal.
They always play with a backing track and a click, and although everything is all their own work and used only as supplementary sounds, it’s my lone quibble with them.
It’s how they choose to express their art and I have to respect that. However, I’ll always wonder what spontaneous or improvised magic we will have missed.

You're talking about the bass & drums - not playing the same thing but playing off of each other. I've said this before but they sound like the equivalent of "Dixieland" for metal. They're all playing the same song but they're all taking off in separate directions, but all together. It doesn't make sense! As for performance, most of them use IEMs (not MISA) and there is a backing track, but that isn't the sound you're hearing. It's all them. The "la la la la" in "Black Hole" sounds ironic to me, like whistling in the graveyard. It's a pretty frenetic song after all.
