Thank you! Yeah, Telegraph Cove was such a fascinating place to visit. The way they've preserved the buildings it feels a bit like stepping back in time.
Waw. J ai adoré ! J aimerais vraiment pouvoir faire ce voyage. Mon anglais n est pas parfait 😅 mais j ai compris... merci pour la visite de ces lieux exceptionnels !
Thanks Chelsie! Well, I did grow up on Vancouver Island so part of the ideas were based on what I knew from living there and places I hadn't yet visited. We decided on spending more time up north which is more remote. When we did more research we found out more about smaller places I didn't even know about. So the trip kind of evolved from a rough idea and research to add in the gaps.
Wonder how much oil product was used to manufacture, transport, install and operate these windmills, probably far more than what they'll ever be able to back before their at end of production, then what? An eyesore or more cost and oil use to dismantle and remove?
You guys actually found the second largest burl, not the largest. The largest one is in Port McNeill. When you drive down Campbell Way (the main road coming in from the highway) follow it to the end. Take the left, heading towards the museum. Stay on that road, going over a small bridge. Its on the left, tucked to the side near the parking lot of the Community hall/ ball field. Its a short walk from the water front. Its about 6 meters larger than the one you found I believe. Once it was demoted to second largest, it actually placed near one of our main logging companies offices, thus why its off of a logging road. Still pretty cool, just not as impressive as the one in town.
Wow. I lived in Port Hardy, this video didn’t do it justice. You missed some of the most unique aspects of this tourist destination. You missed the incredible sport fishing, the amazing whale and grizzly bear watching, walks on the vast sandy Stories Beach, the brilliant world renowned native carvers. Drive to the Wild West side and see the raw power of the open pacific. The diving out of Telegraph Cove or Gods Pocket Resort are among the best cold water dive spots in the world, yet not even a mention. Visit the local waterfalls and caves, Hike the famous Cape Scott trail. Visit Ronnings Gardens, a historic abandoned botanical oasis in the middle of a ancient rain forest. You missed so so much.
We completely agree with you, Ron. Trying to see Port Hardy, Port McNeill, and Telegraph Cove in one day was too much to fully experience each destination. If we could do it over again, we'd allot a few days in each destination in order to do some of the tours. We also didn't realize that grizzly tours and whale watching tours sell out weeks in advance, so we really should have pre-booked because we missed out on that too. Hopefully we'll be able to return to the island in the future.
Ok so how many MVA of power those wind mills can generate? I'm surprised BC Hydro did not capitalize on the remote community power supply. I was at VIT Kelly (near Duncan) which is probably a central hub of power supply from the main land through marine DC cables... wonder why they never built TL to Port Hardy. Hmmm....
There is another burl claiming to be the worlds largest also in Port McNeil. It is much better presented, this one has been encased in fiber glass and looks kind of phoney. Both claim to be the largest, hard to say which one is, they look pretty similar.
