  • I decided to try something a bit different from my typical hike. I rented a kayak from Northbrook Canoe Company and did a run on the Brandywine Creek in scenic Chester County Pa. I have been very impressed thru my travels with the amount of recreational opportunities available in this part of the state, along with the fairly rural feel of the area in such relative close proximity to the city of Philadelphia. I was looking for a different type of adventure on this day, and I ended up getting even more than I bargained for on this kayak adventure with an unexpected twist! Gator out...

You are very lucky. Strainer trees are some of the most dangerous situations. Even in fairly low water. Easy to get pinned by current to submerged branches. Glad you ended up beyond the tree.

I am very lucky, it's scary to think about how quickly things can go wrong in moving water. This was a good learning experience for me and hopefully others may see and take something from this as well.

Always a good idea to pull over above a hazard
to assess the best course of action. Glad you were safe. Phones can be replaced.

Absolutely you are correct. As I recall there was a severe storm about 48 hours before my trip and I think that tree had just fallen. I'm not sure the outfitters were even aware of it's presence. I made the mistake of assuming I would have no issues because it was a well traveled well known route. It was a lesson learned.

Oh Walter! Now it's bare-chested boating for you! What were you filming with? I just broke my GoPro's waterproof case and I'm afraid to use my phone (which is my camera) when I'm in my kayak. This was a beautiful ride. An oldie but a goodie. Peace out!

Yea this wasn't one of my finer moments on film, haha. Pretty embarrassing actually! That was probably shot with my hero 8. I just remember in that moment right as it was happening, thinking to myself - this is totally messed up but it's going to make good video lol! Peace and prayers...

I have floated the Brandywine Creek though years ago. Keep your phone in something that is waterproof and float proof. I've always been a pretty good regular kayaker, though once I took a class of white water kayaking, that was a little scary. We used white water kayaks, and first thing we had to do was go over into the water and pull the skirt off of it to get out. Someone was there to make sure we got out. Kayaking in a white-water kayak is a little more scary than a regular one but it was fun.
