    Tragic. I'm shocked the parents took that kind of a risk.

    The mother likely survived because she stayed with the kayak and therefore didn't expend energy. If you're at risk of hypothermia the last thing you want to do is swim two miles.

    Errors = absolute complete stupidity. The mother alone was plenty weight for an open kayak on the big lake to deal with. How can you not understand that? Blows my mind. Then add father and THE KIDS?! -Those poor children.

    I reported to Coast Guard Station Bayfield a little over a month before this happened. I was apart of the crew that found the two youngest and the father. I remember that night so vividly. The one thing that stuck with me was how fast the community came together. In a matter of an hour or so we had so many boats out there helping us look. That lake is no joke and it will cost you if you treat it like such.

    I’ve been kayaking for over 10 years now. I just don’t understand the illogical thinking behind this entire trip. Why take such small children out like that to begin with let alone on a two seater kayak? Why did everyone separate once in the water? So very sad all the way around

    65° does not sound like dyng of hypothermia temp.
    Edit: 60-70° gives you on average 2-40 hours before hypothermia kills you. Man they were unlucky.

How did he think he' d make it to shore with a child on his back & in his arms when they're in such a large body of water?? Always think of what could go wrong when you're going in the water. In an emergency like theirs those children could not do anything to help themselves or the parents.

      The Hobie outback 12 has a weight capacity of 425lbs. The sun dolphin Bali 13.5ss (similar to the one in this incident) has a capacity of 500lbs. I don’t believe the kayak (regardless of brand) was at fault. It was simply overloaded.

    I to want to say to all the people blaming the parents. Why? They did this every year as a family trip. This had never happened before, so why would they ever think something horrible would happen. You need to understand that after people pass, you cannot just go around blaming people. Playing the blame game never helps a situation (even if this happened a couple years ago).

    • @16thsecond64
      @16thsecond64 3 года назад +5

      BS. Yes you can. And hopefully people should learn from this. The children died a horrible death due to their parents complete and utter ignorance. You do NOT take an open kayak with a total of 5 people on the Great Lakes with that much weight- NO MATTER WHAT. It is NOT built for that. If it was it would have the necessary seats and weight capacity. Have you ever been on the Great Lakes? They aren't something to mess with. You just can't take the honest truth. The ones I feel the worst for is the children that suffered concequences of idiocy. -May they rest in peace.
