  • An 18-year-old driving a Honda Pilot in Fargo, North Dakota, wasn't able to stop after the vehicle malfunctioned. The vehicle continued to accelerate, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph before a Minnesota State Trooper was able to catch up to the runaway vehicle. The trooper had to drive in front of the runaway vehicle, and advised the driver to hit the squad car. The trooper then braked and brought the vehicle to a stop. No injuries were reported. Here's the dashcam and body camera video from the Sept. 17, 2024, incident.

    I'm 56 now but when I was 16-17ish I was driving a POS Mercury LTD and the gas pedal stuck due to the floor mat being crumpled up around the gas pedal, scary feeling at first but then I reached down and pulled the floor mat out. If you ever find yourself in that situation put the car in neutral or turn it off. I can completely understand how frightening that can be as I was a beginner driver at that time.

    When this happens, put the damn car in neutral. It's a feature that can be done when the car is moving. It's mean to be a safety feature just incase something like this happens. It happened to me once, stuck gas pedal in my 1978 Mercedes 450SLC. I put it in neutral, and slammed the brakes, then turned the car off. I swear people have zero survival instincts now.

      Unfortunately we have people on the road that think a car can drive without a transmission & that all cars only spin the rear wheels.
      People have survival instincts, just not mechanical knowledge or mechanical instincts. In-person drivers ed courses need to be improved, Germany apparently requires you to demonstrate that you can regain control upon losing grip, meanwhile you can get a driver's license in the US without knowing why you actually need to use the parking brake upon parking.

      @@robertforzano4697 I know, it's an electronic gear selector. You have to depress the brakes enough to trigger the gear selector unlock if it's stuck. It's the same way you would put it in drive. My car, requires about 20% of brake force just to unlock the parking brake in order for you to put it in gear. Any less, then it doesn't work. You can also press the stop start and hold it for 2 seconds and the car shuts off. Honda built it with a 2sec timer in case you accidentally turn the car off. Engineers actually built a lot of safety features in cars just in case the drive by wire failed. It should be in the owners manual.

    If the car is drive-by-wire and a sensor fails where it won't tell the transmission to shift into neutral then it's going to stay in whatever gear it's in. If it's a push button start, the car shouldn't let you turn it off while it's moving because then you'll lose power steering.
    This isn't like my Miata with a physical key and manual gearbox. The Honda might not have an automatic gearbox where you can just slide it from drive into neutral if it was built within the last 5 - 10 years.

    • @DroneStrike1776
      @DroneStrike1776 22 часа назад +3

      I get what you're saying, that all cars are now drive by wire, and some cars like the Pilot uses an electronic gear selector, but neutral is actually a safety feature for stuff like this. You should be able to switch it into neutral no matter the situation. It was built to prevent stuck open throttle. For the Honda electronic gear selector, if the car is running, you would need to hit the brakes and press neutral. You don't even need to brake all the way, just enough to trigger the unlock.
      This is the reason I still own a E90 BMW and BP Mazda3 awd hatch, they still use mechanical gear selector.

    So lets go ahead and clear some things up with this, this was a Honda Pilot from 2016 to 2022. To confirm, i went through Alldata and IATN and can 100% confirm this is not possible on this vehicle. This pilot has push bottom shifter that will let you go into neutral at speed when pressed because the ABS pump is electric. If the throttle body was stuck open, the braking system would have over powered it (has to by law) and the ECU would see this and cut the injectors. And finally, this pilot has push bottom start and if you hit it, it will cut the car off even at speed according to Honda. This was 100% the driver on something, high, drunk or something else, or was speeding, got caught and this is how they chose to get out of it, or has no common sense whatsoever and should not be driving a car.

I work at a multi dealer shop and we have tried on many cars and it can't be done on any thing past those years, any type of failure like this will trigger the injectors to cut off and engine to go in to limp mode or shut off. Everyone saw what happened with Toyota and no one wants to deal with that. I 100% guarantee they will find nothing wrong with this car because it is not physically possible unless there was some kind of modification done to it after manufacturing. I think the kid was on the gas when they thought it was the brake, or they were speeding and thought this would get them out of it.

      Stop it. If it's in neutral, then it's in neutral. These are electronic gear selectors. You need to apply brakes in order to activate neutral. The brake pressure will unlock the gear selector. In neutral, there's no gears. The torque converter is disconnected from your engine, so there's no power through your drive shaft. In order to turn the car off in case of an emergency, Honda built in another safety feature, you have to hold the stop start for 2 seconds for it to turn off. It's to prevent accidental shut off. Dispatch probably didn't know, so I don't blame them, but everyone should know the car they're driving. Read the owner's manual. Most of these stuff is in the owner's manual just incase there's an electronic malfunction.

      king lot and as a creature comfort. Cars loose power steering all the time when the engine fails on the freeway, guess what, it starts slowing down and now your breaks will start to have effect. Now, if the steering system is 100% electric then yeah, you’re screwed. At least that’s the way I remember not having power steering when I was a kid. I don’t know why more people just don’t go to a parking lot and try turning off their car while moving and practice this stuff just once. I put my car and my friends and family cars through all these experiments as a curious kid. Many new cars don’t have a key to “turn off” and you don’t want to lock the steering wheel either but if you are going 100MPH into a T, I’d take my chance :-)
