IEW has something called PAL that is specifically for kindergarten through 2nd grade aged children. Perhaps that's why it seems IEW assumes your children already know what a paragraph is? Great video! I appreciate seeing the difference. Thank you for sharing :) EIW interests me, however I currently have a sweet spot for IEW because my middle schooler is using their Structure and Style level B year 1. It is a bit expensive, but I love that Andrew Pudewa is teaching it to him and he has a GREAT sense of humor that kids really seem to enjoy :) Thanks again for sharing!
My 3rd grader is currently using the IEW People and Places. I don't see how a typical 1st grader would truly glean anything from IEW. In my opinion, the concept it's trying to teach is just too advanced. First and even second graders should still be learning and reinforcing the basics of reading and writing words phonetically, basic sentence structure, and building fine motor control through a penmanship program. In my opinion, most kids don't even need any type of formal instruction on authorship until at earliest 3rd grade. My 3rd grader is a reluctant writer and getting a lot out of it now. I can't imagine how burned out and resistant to writing she would be now if I'd tried to have her do IEW even in 2nd grade, let alone 1st. I will honestly say, as much as I appreciate IEW, that seems crazy to me.
I really enjoyed your video. It was so helpful. Looks like EIW has quite a bit of grammar teaching. Is it recommended to have a separate grammar program or can this EIW be solely used?
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it was helpful for you! Their website says that it is a complete grammar and a complete writing program as well, so you don't have to get anything else. However, they don't teach sentence diagramming in their grammar portion, so if that is something you want to teach you might enjoy reading their article about why they don't teach it. essentialsinwriting.com/do-i-need-to-teach-sentence-diagramming/
This is only an introduction to the process and the units. As they progress in age and ability they cover more information and more concepts like correct paragraphs, structure, essay, research papers etc.
@maryoverton1869 Honestly, I tried to sit through the lessons myself, and I was falling asleep, aside from a couple of long-winded jokes. I know my child, and I don't think it's gonna appeal to her.
@empressamilaj7812 It doesn't have too nor did I say it would. I was just explaining the system. The beauty of homeschooling is we get to pick what works for our individual children and IEW is no different. My oldest liked the videos my youngest doesn't so I just explain it to her and she does the work. My niece doesn't do well with IEW at all so she has a different writing program. So many great ones to from :)

So I went and looked at PAL. You are right, that probably would have been a better level to start with! So glad you liked the video!

I was also surprised at how advanced it was. EIW seems to be much more age appropriate.
Oh my goodness, I finally get the iew method! Thank you sooo much, this was incredibly helpful!
I'm so glad!

@@myhomeschool101 I agree with not needing sentence diagramming. I don’t remember ever having to do that during college or even public high school.
@@TheChan7 I never learned it either!
@@myhomeschool101by the way, I just subscribed to your channel. I also have a channel mainly about homeschooling and happy to connect here 😊

One can do teacher training free with iew . This should be done unless u do s and s.
Could you post a link? Everything I saw was something you had to buy.
I have to agree with you. I did the trail and had the same sentiment about the IEW.
I hope you found something else to use instead!

@@myhomeschool101 I'm trying the essential in writing this year.
