    So I'm researching IEW for my upcoming 7th grader because the curriculum she is using right now is not cutting it anymore. This flip through was EXCELLENT. Just what I needed. I've always been wary of IEW because of price point and I didn't like the video based lessons for younger Elementary but she's getting older and needs more. Thank you so much for this! 👏👏👏❤️❤️

    Thanks for the detailed flip through! I’ve also been confused if the parent training was necessary and the differences between the streams. What grades did you begin this with each of your children? Did you use this and Fix-it and that was considered a complete LA curriculum? Finally, I also wonder when they do their own writing? Thanks so much again! This is the best video I’ve seen for IEW!

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  2 года назад +2

      Love Fix it Grammar. And the new versions are so good. I started my kids around 2nd and 3rd grade. And yes, totally a complete LA curriculum with the exception of phonics and if you need, diagramming. For diagramming I did use well-trained mind.
      The idea behind their own writing, IEW is based on the Suzuki method, you copy the good stuff until it becomes so familiar with you. Eventually they will write papers with History and other subjects. This is when the training with IEW comes out. My son also has starting writing on his own. However, they do have a few lessons where they do create their own.
      Think of IEW as training.

    Thank you for this video! For a child younger than your son, do you think they could do the Structure and Style so independently? I feel like a younger child might need the parent quite involved anyway, so I might be better off with the theme based program until he's a bit older. (My oldest is currently age 8 and I was thinking of doing something with him and his advanced younger sister next year when they will be 7&9.)
    After watching your video, I am kind of thinking we might do theme based the first few years and then switch to S&S when they are older. I do have several children so independent work is a good thing, but I do like writing and would like to do some of it with them.

    Thank you for doing this video. One thing that I have always been confused about IEW is how and when they transition from rewriting written works to inventing and writing on their own. At this level, do that they that? Was the sample you read am example of rewriting or invented writing. I see the value in both, I just never seem to find a video that explains beyond the retelling. Thank you so much.

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  2 года назад +3

      They do have a few lessons on that. I also know that the Structure and Style had a lesson where he had to write a research paper on a topic of his choice. But most of it is the rewriting. It's very much like the Suzuki method. The concept is copying the good stuff and when you do write on your own, it comes naturally. I know my boys write papers for history at the co-op and from all of the IEW work they're papers come out very nice and they find it enjoyable and easy.

    • @LivingWithEve

      That’s hard. I think starting them in 3rd or 4th grade is good. Just remember it is a tool box and take your time going through it. And continue to feed into his creative writing outside of this. You will see his creative writing add more beautiful words and descriptor and the scripture will start to change so he can communicate better.

This year I wanted to try EIW and I don't love it...I want to try the Theme Based Writing, but I'm afraid of it being too teacher intensive. With the new S&S you should probably use them, they are really good. But if you already know their method it is possible to use it without.

    Does this teach how to write an essay or does this teach how to re-write a passage?

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  Год назад +1

      Some will have you rewrite the passage, however the students will compose research papers and essays and you move along in the curriculum.

    Do you feel like this writing would be considered a complete writing curriculum? Do you also feel it would be OK for someone who is behind in writing or has some learning deficits in hand writing and coming up with writing topics in general? Think a 8th grader in sped very behind with writing ?

    • @LivingWithEve

      I do actually. If they are behind they could start with level one and just take your time through it.

    I have 3 kids and thinking about using iew. I know this takes time on my part, but with 3 kids and possibly 2 different levels, how much time would you say? And do you do 3 days a week, 2 days, every day?

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  2 года назад +1

      The key is structure and style has a streaming version. It saves you on so much time. And if it’s time your worried about then that’s the way to go. There is a bit of a learning curve in the beginning for you since you will still have to grade their work. So watching their videos with them or even a video by Andrew (I’ll put a link) that will help you know what your looking for. Hours a week? Maybe 4 - 5 hours with the themed unit, 30 mins -1 hour of grading with structure and style. But every child and family is different, so it varies.

      @@LivingWithEve so grading doesn’t seem to be a bother too me. Also, I love the idea of structure and style because I watched a sample video of Andrew pudewa and was like, “this is awesome! I love his way of teaching in the videos! I am star struck on one video!” And now I want to meet him. Also, wondering what grade level I can start that at? The individual themed things seem neat, but Andrew pudewa teaching is the crème de la crème! I want to go back to school!

      @@LivingWithEveSorry, I'm really trying to understand before I take the plunge in purchasing this writing curriculum for my children. You're saying I don't have to purchase Teacher Writing Structure and Style. I'm reading on their website that it is important for teachers to gain the training necessary to help their children write well. Did you purchase this particular course or you did well without it with your kiddos?

    • @VeronicaBrandt

      @@evelynr1540 in the video the teacher book seems to reference TWSS videos, so maybe there's some access there? Looking at the sample SSS teacher book, it looks like it does reference the TWSS, but can't see that it gives you access to them.
      Sorry, I don't have an answer - I'm part way through the TWSS course thanks to their 12 days of Christmas offers.
      I'm getting a lot out of the teacher course so far. The cheapest way to do that seems to be to get their Premium membership, so you get access to the training videos. They also have a page with some helpful downloads, so if you can't afford the seminar workbook, then you can get some handouts to tide you over.
