I'm interested. I understand that the instruction comes from the recordings, but I don't understand who grades the papers. Does the student send them to IEW or does the homeschooling parent grade them? Thanks.
@@gatheredandgrounded O.K. Thanks. My 10yo is taking an Outschool class using IEW. It's not comprehensive, so I'm thinking of doing this. Thanks for the review.
Been thinking about getting it. Do you have a code to share? Not sure if IEW does something like that. Not sure if you get like a discount if we buy through your code.
My 5th grader does Structure and Style Level A, he is on week 21. I have seen a huge improvement in his writing, his editing, and in his confidence in writing. The key to success, in my opinion, is to watch the videos for the week on Sunday night (or along side your child) to know what is being taught and what is expected for the week. Also editing your child's paper and discussing the edits so that your child will then begin to recognize their own mistakes in the future. By watching the videos yourself you can also familiarize yourself with the examples given to make sure your child doesn't copy ideas from the students in the videos! We will be doing level B for 6th grade. For other language arts we use Abeka, we've never used other IEW programs.
Forgot to add, my son loves it! He loves the jokes, he feels connect to the class. He talks about the students in class as if he knows them. It's a great program!
I completely agree with waiting to start Fix it Grammar when the kiddos truly have a strong foundation in grammar because it goes so much smoother. We did Rod and Staff Grammar 4 in my daughter’s fourth grade year and it laid a great grammar foundations so now she is breezing through the Fix it Grammar series. I am so happy IEW is working in your homeschool we have been loving it too .❤
My son is dyslexic, so anything multisensory and hands on his a huge plus for us. We’re using Grammar Bugs from Rooted in Language. He loves them!! I also took their Grammar class which has been a huge help.
I really appreciate all the effort that goes into looking at different curriculums and resources. I also work full time and am new to this. Your videos have guided me through. I have a 2nd grader and will be following you until they graduate lol😂
I actually love fix it grammar for my 2nd grader. I bought it for third grade, but she wanted to jump on and start the book. She has understood it really well, and the lessons are very simplified to teach your child. Thanks for your structure and style review. I believe I should probably get it for my daughter. I was on the fence, but it sounds good.
I didn’t know they had a free trial! Thank you! I was going to purchase but my son (he’s 13 but loathes writing so wanted to start from the beginning because I’m all about the foundation) is not a fan of most writing curriculums and it’s a bit pricey so this is perfect to see if it is a fit for us.
How much writing is involved with this curriculum. I have extremely reluctant writers, but I'm so intrigued by this program. We are in love with Fix It Grammar.
We are working on week 5 right now and this is the most they had to write which is 2 paragraphs. But it’s broken up pretty well. They are essentially rewriting the same excerpt they read. Atleast that’s how it’s been all the lessons so far. My oldest isn’t a huge fan of writing and she is liking this because it tells them exactly what to do. We do spread out 1 week over 2 weeks, I don’t make them spending more than 45 mins on it which 30 of that is the actually video lesson. I highly recommend doing the 3 week trial to see if it works
I am so happy to hear you say that about the fix it. I felt the same and was so frustrated because everyone raves about it so much and it was just not enough explanation for us.
My highschooler has done some Fix it grammar and we also found she needs more instruction in grammar first (She's newly homeschooled so it wasn't me instructing her.) I've not tired the Structure and Style yet. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for the video. Curious if you have an update a year later? Did you take/purchase and complete the full teacher training in order to properly teach your child? I purchased the IEW curricula, but I haven't had the time yet to complete the Teaching Structure and Style program for myself. Is it possible to effectively use this program with my children, even if I didn't complete the teaching training portion to teach my children well?? Can I just primarily learn right along with my children and still learn to effectively teach them to write well using IEW techniques? Thanks.
Here is an update Homeschool Curriculum IEW Structure & Style Update - Honest Thoughts + Pros & Cons ruclips.net/video/F3DmUskzTjY/видео.html I think you can get through it without the teacher session (a lot of people would disagree) but if you watch the lessons with your kids you should be just fine ❤️
I agree with fix it grammar. I'm actually going to do the same. We are going to continue to work on a more in-depth grammar curriculum. Then we will go begin to use the IEW Fix it Grammar. I will have to look into the Structure and Style.
I’ve watch sooo many videos on IEW. I have been preparing to use it for about a year now. We are about to get ready to purchase it. But anyways, your videos has sold me the most, haha.
Thanks for the video! With the free trial, do the three weeks begin as soon as you sign up or can you choose to begin it later? I want to do it but not for another few weeks. I'd hate to sign up now and then have it time-out on me before we get around to it. Also, what does it come with? The streaming videos and downloadable worksheets? Does it also include some Fix It! samples?
It doesn’t start as soon as your sign up, you get the downloads to everything in your account. It comes with the 3 weeks of all the worksheets you need, teacher guide, videos and yes there is samples of Fit it Grammar available as well ☺️
We did the three week trial for SS1A for my 3 kiddos, end of 2nd grade, 5th and 6th at the time. We loved it and bought the curriculum. My youngest loves writing and does very very well with writing so she started it pretty young as a tag along and loved it at first. But the lessons quickly became too long for her writing stamina. Since we were doing it all together, we couldn't really slow down for her, so I would scribe for her for a while but eventually it just became too much. As the course progresses the videos become longer and longer and my older two even became annoyed with how long the lessons were taking. The first 1/4 of the lessons or so were perfect, but we struggled through the later lessons. My son is in 7th and just started the grammar and it is ok, but I don't think my kids without as much grammar could do it. Curious what will you be switching to for grammar.
@@gatheredandgrounded they became significantly longer. From taking an hour to do video and kwo to almost 2 hrs or more:( we switched to the theme based hoping lessons would take less time.
Homeschooling gives freedom to split the lessons and not do them in one sitting. I know a lot of families that use IEW split longer lessons into several days, and it works great.
I have not, I did sign up for it when they had their free 12 days of giveaways but just haven’t had time yet. I’m not having any issues following along with the teachers manual and watching the lessons with my kids
What other language arts curriculum do you use while using IEW? Like do you something else for literature and reading or do you just use this ? I’m brand new to homeschool planning for the upcoming year and this video interested me.
Hey! In your opinion do you think I can swap BJU English 3 for the BJU IEW? Or did you find I would need to supplement with something else? I really like the IEW thank you for the free three week link.
We decided not to use BJU, we are using IEW and love it! I feel like you do need to supplement with grammar, vocabulary, spelling - we use Beowulf grammar and various literature guides. Next year we will probably use Fix it Grammar.
We started Fix it Grammar with my son in Grade 4 but quickly put it on hold. I would love to find a curriculum that teaches the why as in why you need to know what a noun is.
@@gatheredandgrounded We do Shurley English Grammar but we leave out the writing part of that program because we like the way IEW teaches it. But everything else about Shurley English Grammar is great for us.
I got it for free during some promotion they were running. To understand the program and how it works it is important but also if you just sit and watch the lessons with your child along with your teachers guide you can figure it out.
Would you recommend IEW’s Structure and Style program first use in a school setting as part of an intervention program for students that need help in writing or whole class for all students?
