  • Learn how I paint shadows plein air. Many times, artists can make their shadows too dark. This can happen more often when artists are using photos. For this landscape plein air oil painting palette I used : Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Cadmium Red. This piece was painted on a 9 x 12 MDF panel.

You can tell by the tone in your voice that you're pretty chuffed with the painting ... and with good reason. The yellow ochre makes those walls sing with warmth.

Thank you. In the past I've used Cad. Yellow Medium, but I wanted to try something different.

Really nice painting Bruce! I like how you used the ivory black. So many painters shy away from it, but i think it can be just as valid as any color. You really got a nice sense of light and i enjoyed your foreground elements too. Nicely done!

I agree, Danny, about Ivory Black. So many artists poo poo it, but I LOVE it. Mixedwith yellows, it makes some killer natural greens.

Nice painting, but I cringe every time I see someone recording videos while driving. A friend of mine was killed by someone not paying attention to the road because they were using their phone.
