- Follow along to learn some useful plein air oil painting techniques as I paint some warehouse buildings on a beautiful sunny morning. The palette I used in this urban plein air subject was: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Cadmium Red.
I was attracted to the strong lines leading the viewer into the background and....of course....the strong sunlight highlighting the forms. Hope you enjoy it!

That's what I like about you, Bruce. With the entire state of Maine at your disposal, you spot the potential for a painting in an industrial back alley. Great eye as always.
Wow, thanks Rich. These are the kind of subjects that really appeal to me.
I can't easily imagine myself choosing to paint a scene like this. This is so unlike anything I would choose to draw or paint...but I like it a lot. It looks great. Actually in this scene I would have painted only the mud puddle with a reflection of something ;-) This is what I like about RUclips artists and their videos, if you make the effort you can see through their eyes for a moment and I find it always expands my viewpoint. Thanks for your work putting these videos on.
Thank you, Dale. I actually considered the puddle only idea. Many potential arrangements in composition are waiting to be painted here..... especially in afternoon light.
All of your videos are great, and I really enjoyed this one too. Like the way the building shadows have color, learned so much. Thanks
Awesome, thank you!
Nice study. Looking forward to seeing the finished painting.
You and me both! Thank you for watching.
@@habowskistudio2724 I'm wondering if you ever finished this up at home in your studio. If so, please post it. I really enjoyed this video and I'm considering trying some plein air painting myself. Thanks!
Good timing, I was just digging out my plein air rig today.
Perfect! Enjoy it.
I hope you get your channel back up and running...like this painting you simplified some questions I had...maybe in the future you can do one with a bunch of cars or a busy street and how to suggest instead of details ...my brain struggles with what to keep and what to eliminate...my cars look like a 3 year old painted them and my linear perspective gets wonky when I carve out shapes in a busy urban landscape..hope all is well and hope to see you soon
Hi...Great idea you have. Subjects like that can be a huge challenge for sure. I'll see what I can do....
Good work 👍
Thanks ✌️
very sharp result.
Thanks Mark.....I do think it has a very solid and crisp effect.....pretty happy with the study.
Curious as to why you chose to omit the mountains
Hi Sharron. I felt that including the hill would crowd the composition. I wanted the lighter value that the sky provided.
Curious as to why you chose to eliminate the mountains
Hi Sharron. I chose to leave out the hill because of the somewhat high horizon line. I felt it would have crowed the composition. I appreciate you taking the time to watch it.
