Three underpowered engines on the TU-154 also. I’ve seen enough of them at various airports in Russia use all the runway up. And I’ve never seen any with as little black raw fuel smoke coming from them on departure as the one in the video. Normally it’s a lasting trail of smoke. Extremely noisy also.
@@stevez6499 The Tu-154 has engines with around 100kN of Thrust with a maximum takeoff weight of around 100 tons, the 727 has engines producing about 72 kN of thrust with a takeoff weight of nearly 95 tons(727-200). The Tu-154 is absolutely not underpowered, the takeoff speed is just rather high.
I favor the 727 since I flew them a long time. TU-154's are interesting to watch. Seeing a 727 now is like seeing a DC3. 727's taught me a lot in 7900 hours.
Nice camerawork as always. Not that I'm saying the 727 is bad, no, it's an amazing plane and a legend, but it think the tu 154 has just a bit more personality and is a bit more beautiful
@@rhodium1096 The Tu154 main undercarriage design is based on the system they had originally fitted to their early jet bombers. Having the main wheels out on the wings means you can have an unobstructed bomb bay in the fuselage. It is not ideal for an airliner as it puts a lot of strain on the wing fuselage joint and can cause these areas to fail in a heavy landing. The Tu154 was the last Russian airliner to feature that undercarriage arrangement.
I've only flown in the B727 and not the Tu154. Except for the shallow takeoff, I enjoyed the flight on the B727. It's the closest I came to flying in a B707. The B757 was another beauty.
I’ve actually heard there’s 2 727s in the U.K. current serving 2 excel aviation in Doncaster. I do hope I get the chance to record one there after lockdown. Hard choice to be fair but the 727’s design just stands out to me especially the way it uses its reverse thrust. Nice video :D
The tail engine S-ducting as engineered on most tri-jets is such an elegant design when compared to the tail mounted engine on a DC-10, which was a comfortable and serviceable (but externally ugly) plane. The target-type "bucket" thrust reversers are an amazing marvel to watch. I wonder if the fuselage airstairs are still in use on the cargo 727s and DC-9s.
I fully agree with you. The DC-10 looks as if the designers had forgotten an engine. The L-1011, B-727 and TU-154 are all beauties. Even though I heard that the S-duct was problematic.
Tupolev , cause is massive ! The 727 is surely a nice plane , but that old style , the screaming sound and those thrust reversers...I fell in love ahah
Love the 27, had hands on experience with an ex-FedEx -100 at my maintenance school. Haven't seen many flying in my lifetime but when I do its a treat. But DAMN I wanna see a tu154 in person one day! Being from the US the chances of seeing one are basically zero, but maybe one day I'll visit Europe and have a chance
Noticed how different their take off are. Tu-154 just jump as soon as the pilot pulls the yoke.. It seems that the 727 needs to generate a little more lift with angle of attack to get off the ground. Choice is difficult, if not impossible. 727 for the elegance, 154 for the exception.
Johan G.Bruère-Dawson Tu-154 pilot uses take off thrust. 727 pilot uses climb thrust for take off. Procedure depends on actual take off weight, runway length and actual outside temperature
@@olegdc10 Really ? The 727 manuals i had clearly show different EPR settings between take off and climb if I remember correctly (need to confirm though). How do you know that the 727 pilots use climb thrust ? I though about noise reduction, engine wear... ? Thanks.
Johan G.Bruère-Dawson It depends on runway length, field elevation, ambient temperature, pressure altitude and actual take off weight. Actually you always use reduced thrust for take off and it is really climb thrust or little bit more than climb thrust. Of cause, you have to set max power when you take off from Denver with max take off weight. And you always set “climb thrust with zero payload in LAX. No matter which Boeing you fly. 727 or 747. As example. Today is warm day in California, 25 degrees. Max take off EPR in LAX is 1,54. But today you have empty aircraft and fuel to LAS and to alternate airport. You will set EPR 1,44 and your climb thrust is 1,44, and may be more. You remember, TAT at 1500 ft is almost 30 today. But there’s no such procedure in Tu-154 manual. Take off is take off and you have always set max thrust, no matter if it is LAX or DEN. And Tu-154 climbs to FL300 after 12-13 minutes after rotate when 727 needs 25 minutes. But this is her only single advantage.
Tu is a far superior, wide undercarriage for rougher landings on less prepared strips and plenty of power, aesthetically more attractive and a really high cruising speed
The 727 went into service in the early 1960s nearly 10-years before the 154. @@aarondynamics1311 , "CAN" and "ALLOWED in accordance with the flight manual" is not the same.
