We all love to root for Luke while he's landing the crucial shots to destroy the Death Star...but what if we've been wrong all this time? What if destroying the Death Star is COMPLETELY wrong? This episode shows exactly why the destruction of the Death Star would have not only hurt the Rebel Alliance, but the entire galaxy...

Matpat: Plapatine's take over was smooth.
Plapatine: Engineers a war in order to take over
was thinking the same thing
Relatively smoother. Palpatine took over in the matter of 6 years. They did it in 9 montha
Plapatine?? Lol
Plap plap palpatines fleet got the slap
Well in palpatines war was droids and clones the gcw was all real non cloned people
I’d argue that Palpatine’s takeover was no where near as smooth as you’re saying. Don’t forget, he engineered a galactic war between the Seperatists and the Republic, funded the Clone Army and the Droid Army and I can’t imagine that war being all that healthy on the economy either. While it may not have been as damaging as the Rebellion’s hostile takeover, it was hardly a smooth and peaceful transition that hardly affected the livelihoods of the galactic population.
actually I would say it's dependant on the planet some probably benefit from the clone wars and were far enough away that they could produce/manufacture for the war without it ever affecting them versus places that get absolutely taken over with fighting
Yes, but that would've been smooth to get over, with a new reformed state You'd be able to just erase any economic problems with the funds of the Empire, as we know the Republic was using a partial amount of their GDP to fund the clone army.
I'm pretty sure it's explained in the clone wars how the clone army impacts the economy of the republic
@@Gaelic-Spirit Basically american debt lol

+Rusty Shackleford We all would, we all would.
A couple of things are being ignored here: 1. The destruction of the first Death Star would've been bad for the economy yes, but the blow would've been softened as more planets joined the Rebellion and led to both the Rebellion and the Empire pumping a lot more money into the economy and helping it to grow. 2. The Empire did not leave the galactic population alone. The Empire's policies would show that they were extremely oppressive to non-humans, for example committing genocide against the Lasat population and enslaving the Wookies.
also the death star was built in secret
3. the clone wars
The Empire also wiped out the Geonosians

Superweapon made by a tyrannical empire: *is destroyed*
Everyone: Oh no! This will surely be terrible for the economy
I'm not sure that's true either. Taxation stifles the economy, although projects like highways and bridges can help it because they make it easier to do business. The Death Star existed in order to bring all planets into the Empire. To increase their tax base. The Empire didn't actually make it easier to do business. They just made sure that people kept less of their earnings.
Empire was literally almost never tyrannical in the EU. Did a few people get offed by Sith? Sure. But the vast majority of the galaxy lived in a perfectly "normal" social structure, were well protected from pirates and others that would disrupt them and were financially stable. Some of the core worlds were tightly controlled but hundreds of others barely even knew the Empire existed beyond the taxes.
Well, blowing up billions of workers and taxpayers (on Alderaan) doesn't help the economy either...
@@MorliHolect That's just one planet. Though. And let's not forget the republic isn't really hands clean. Lots of bad stuff going on there, that has been culled under the empire, then again the empire brought other bad stuff to the table. You also see how the empire got their funding
Plus the rebels needed to destroy the death start before they destroyed MORE planets!
Great video though!
The Death Star was more of a scare tactic more than anything. I mean, how many planets did you see them actually blow up with that thing?
Yeah, they blew up Alderaan... Which were harbouring terrorists.
Corrupt? I haven't seen the comics, but I'll look into it.
Yeeeeeah but here's a twist: they could just conquer the death star and recondition it to dont destroy planets. You know, to aboid recesion and stuff
@@franco-golpeador2435
Let me hit your twist with another twist.
War is gray! Even in Star Wars, their could be rebels who wouldn't mind using this thing to blow up imperial planets, innocents be damned! Plus there would be the possibility of the empire taking back the Death Star. Economy in a whole galaxy be damned! That thing needs to be destroyed!
Could've been scrapped for parts? Yes! But it's still a weapon people can take advantage of and use AS A WEAPON. You can remove the laser and it's still dangerous, cause now. Someone can pull a Mobile Suit Gundam and drop the thing on a world killing billions.
You can recover from dept and a lose of money, you CAN'T recover from the literal deaths of billions. Cause those lives are gone forever.
@@owenbernardo3026 Nukes are more of a scare tactic more than anything, I mean, how many cities did you see them actually blow up with that thing?

Missing the fact that the empire didn't pay for a whole lot. They just took what they wanted and blew up everything else.
It's still a lot of resources wasted in literally one minute
On a galactic scale; barely a dent in the imperial budget.
The Empire would have controlled the economy anyway, they produced everything, they bought everything. Mostly everything was nationalized. So it was a massive loop. The Empire didn't need to worry about the economy, because they controlled it.

I think that this is a good demonstration of the nature of Sith: acquire power, and then use it. If the thing they want to use it for isnt all that bad, then a Sith can actually make a pretty decent leader.
Don't forget Palpatine was enslaving entire races. Although to be fair the Galactic Republic and the later New Republic didn't do much to hinder the Hutt slave trade either, but still. At least they didn't promote it themselves.

Also Matpat: "But heeeeey! That's just a theory!"
Because it isn't even a theory, it's merely conjecture! When a warship is at your shore, you do not think about how it's destruction will harm the enemy's economy, you order its destruction without a second thought to the lives on board or the cost to make it, or the armaments present on it.
About this theory: The frankly amazing Aftermath series agrees (yes, it's canon). It covers the events after the second death star and shows how the galaxy, particularly the empire, has gone to crap. They're great books and I would recommend reading them if you're interested.
I've heard that they aren't that good, but the lore they add is definitely good.

They'd probably just use tech to redistribute the planets own steel to form the shape of the canon. The rest is already their in the form of the canon. It's probably physically impossible while keeping the planet's life forms alive, which they did, but then this a universe with space wizards in it so it's best not to nitpick.
I know right killing the only planet with light saber crystals and replacing it with a star just imagine how much money and time went into that thing plus it was replaced BY A STAR that star system would be torn apart by gravity in less than 10 years, still a cool scene tho

Also Matpat: Oh yeah that's right, they blew up a planet...oh, well...
you don't have to pay countless number of currencies to make a planet unlike the ds.
@@cr90captain89 True, but
1) consider the currency on the planet when it is blown up and
2) think about all of the industries on that planet when it is blown up. The division of labor has most likely advanced with technology, so there may be an entire field of industry crippled.
3) Most importantly, think of the economic disaster when people see the government blowing up it's own planets. There will be a scramble to get out of whatever investments seem risky, causing an absolute mess of an economy.

your reference to the emperor "he pretty much left the galactic population alone" is wrong. He was the master mind behind the clone wars so everything since Naboo to his rise as the empire should be considered his fault. While the rebels may seem as terrorist who put the galaxy in a huge recession, the emperor is the one who engulfed the galaxy in a war, destroyed the balance of power from the inside, created dozens of rebel factions and small civil wars and destroyed the jedi order who was tasked to bring peace thus allowing even more crime to rise. you said that people spend less when they are scared and thats one of the first things to happen when a recession hits, well im pretty sure people were really scared the entire time the emperor was in power. sorry matt patt, im unconvinced about this theory. the only reason why they were able to build the death star was due to slave labor not a strong economy.

You do realize that the Death Star was primarily constructed via slave labor, yes? And that the Empire was extremely racist (speciesist?) and treated every alien species as second class citizens? Bullshit that the Empire didn't effect imperial citizens. And Darth Vader was feared throughout the entire galaxy. There is also the Base Delta Zero operations carried out as a result of the Tarkin Doctrine.
Another thing. Attacking a military target and attacking a civilian target are completely different things. Don't try to equate them. The Alliance to Restore the Republic were NOT terrorists. A terrorist attacks civilian targets to instill fear in the populace. If anything, the rebels were stopping attacks like this from happening by destroying the Death Star and opposing the Empire's tyranny.
EDIT: You also are ignoring that the Empire had complete control over the economy. They could have forced the economy not to react. Plus they used propaganda to reduce the spread of information, such as them losing their most powerful military asset.

Matpat, what if the Empire stole the iron?
+Freshbreeze Probably got it all from that Junkyard Planet you fight Kazdan Paratus on in The Force Unleashed. They even have a smelting factory there specifically for building warships, with a cannon to fire the ore up to the orbital shipyard.
Also. Aren't there planets made entirely out of iron in the galaxy.
+Cody Hines That is non-canon.
+Freshbreeze It would still need to come from somewhere. Whether the steel was bought or reclaimed from scrapped x-wings you're still looking at thousands of planets-worth of the stuff as well as transportation costs, labour costs, life support for workmen on the project etc. All of this takes money if even you're doing it secretly so the economic effects would still exist, they'd just be labelled as 'Coffee' or whatever else you label your fraud. Then there's the question of why a legitimate government would need to steal resources to work on a project (however secret).
+packman2321 Well, the Empire mostly used slaves and prisoners of war, so they didn't really care about workmen.
11:39 Even Starbucks want to grab the power... :p
Lol u saw that too
lol
+Victor Sung The funny thing is that he is right about the numerous factions trying to grab power. Everyone was happy that the Emperor died but the Empire did not collapse. While a new republic was formed it still had to contend with the remaining power structure of the Empire including top admirals and other military brass still in power across hundreds of worlds. If politics is messy here on Earth with just one planet and one species you have no idea the hell the Star Wars Galaxy went through because of this. Before Disney took over the accepted canon for events after the fall of the empire was an explosion of new threats and instability.

Oh and btw I checked wookiepedia and the death star destroyed 178 planets alone in its history sooo... Yeah and don't forget the emperial cruelty that they gave to their citizens so I think it was fair that both the death star and the star killer base should had been destroyed.
Destroying Alderann pretty much ruined any chances of anyone showing sympathy for the Empire. In the books the Empire destroying a planet caused massive defections and support for the Rebellion. Think about the economic impact the annihilation of one of the core worlds would have.
The First Order blew up a whole system of core worlds think about the impact of THAT

or at least mark at could have
I'm a Gaming Dragon The bad English is strong in this one...
Also there is Jedha, Scraif and the NEW REPUBLIC SYSTEM!!!
Everyone hated the empire, and the transition wasn't smooth. They declared non-humans second class citizens, held the entire senate hostage until they signed a treaty, invaded Corroscant, and destroyed the Jedi Temple. Poverty rates were at an all time high, they forced certain species like Wookies into slavery. Basically, everyone hated these guys. The rebels WEREN'T terrorists just like the US Marine Corp isn't full of terrorists. These people declared a WAR, and they weren't committing acts of terror to scare people. That's what the EMPIRE was doing, they blew up a whole planet, and intended to blow up more. They used fear to keep people inline. The Alliance didn't kill innocents to state a message, but the Empire did.
The economy crashed with the empire, and under a new system of government, it could heal again.
EDIT: Yes I know the difference between the Sith Empire and Palpatine's Empire, yes I got them mixed up. I acknowledged that, please stop commenting about it.
+Xelipho Wow, you really have no fucking idea do you?
"held the entire senate hostage until they signed a treaty, invaded Corroscant, and destroyed the Jedi Temple."

That doesn't even make sense. The US marine corps are a branch of the United states military whilst the rebels are a stateless political organization. What the fuck are you even talking about?
" and intended to blow up more."
You just made that up. There is a direct source that shows that the Empire did not intend to destroy any more planets than Aldeeran.
This is just pathetic.
You are just making stuff up.
"The Alliance didn't kill innocents to state a message, but the Empire did." So those 800,000 civilians aboard the death star didn't exist then?
Don't be an idiot (although you already act as one if your comment is anything to judge by) the Rebels killed millions of innocent people as well.
+Jen'Ari-Asha didn't Vader say "start with Alderon "?
Whoo! A true theorist, you are. MatPat overlooked a lot of things with this one, I wonder if he's baiting us... or if he was rushed. Also, ignore the troll, the comment is its own undoing. I think the intergalactic culture difference is one of the main things overlooked here.
Karl M I don't remember Vader saying that. However, what he said is irrelevant. Because we know exactly what the Empire would do with the death star.
And after Aldeeran they were not planning to destroy any more planets.
Honestly, read Star wars infinities: a new hope.
It is a book were the Empire defeats the Rebels.
It clearly shows what the Empire was planning to do.
Did they destroy more planets? Nope.
Did they use it to terrorize planets? Nope.
Did they use it as a weapon? Nope.
They renamed it "The Justice Star" and put it in orbit around Coruscant as a symbol of peace and justice.
The Justice Star quickly became the new Galactic Capital.
That was until R2-D2 and Yoda hijacked it and crashed it into Coruscant, killing billions of innocent people in the process.
That is exactly what the Empire was planning to do, as well as what the Rebels were planning to do if they lost.
They would kill billions of innocent people as long as they killed Palpatine in the process.
God damn religious fanatics.
+Jen'Ari-Asha last time i checked killing stormtroopers isn't killing innocent people
in universe, the death star cost around 1 trillion credits and almost 20 years to build
Boba Fett: Um, yeah. Let me get out of this kriffing pit and I'll be right with you. Someone get my armor away from those silly Jawas while you're at it?
The empire probably just took all their resources without paying any credits.
+Hipster Spock I think it did.
The Empire used slaves and droids to build the Death Star and gather the resources to build it, and it was a secret project so barely anyone outside high ranking military knew about it, plus Stormtroopers don't get paid. So pretty much this entire video was a moot point. Of course only people who are obsessive Star Wars fans (such as moi) would know those points so I can forgive matpat.
+Nick J. If you can prove that anything you said is canon (which I guarantee you can't) it doesn't matter.
If it isn't in Star Wars Ep 1-7, Clone Wars, or Rebels it doesn't count.
So no, the entire video is not a moot point.
Lonelynightm That info comes from the EU, which is not part of the Disney Canon, true. But it can be assumed that if Disney does not contradict it, it can be considered ambiguous canon.
Nick J.
That is not how canon works. Is or is not. There is no sorta canon. It is as simple as that.
''the steel is just the beginning''
and the next part is...
the plastic needed to make a LEGO death star
Both of the lego death stars because there are two of them
I feel better about the Lego choice I made, because there's less pieces for good old 75060. (From some of the prices I saw looking for that thing, you need to bring in quite a few bounties alive.)
i love Star wars so i am really happy you made a video on it.
wow
This was made in 2016. 5 years ago. God, this makes me feel old.
Wow, That would actually make a much better story than what was actually in Episode VII. Imagine the galaxy being in economic ruins while the new republic struggles to maintain order and rebuild. Meanwhile Grand Admiral Thrawn gathers and organizes the imperial remnant forces to strike at the New Republic during their weakest moment.
I vote we scrap episode 7, 8 and 9 and work with this plot line.
Pretty sure that each like is a vote. I voted.
Agreed
Death Star was an inside job, Vader was on his tie fighter when it went down.
Coincidence? I think not!
and dead on a shuttle while the second one blew up.
Actally it WAS A inside job thanks to the new movie rogue one... huh.
And after Luke burnt his father's body his son founds grandad and boom
Also is it me or does this family goes like...
First son becomes Jedai but then he becomes a Sith
*Here is the loop*
Son gets born becomes Jedai
The son of that son becomes Sith
And just like that this never stops!
Lol
You say the emperor came to power while the normal people just lived out their life, but he literally created a galactic war to get his power.
To be fair, the Empire did put all it's eggs into one basket... Twice...
wait star bucks wants to take the empires place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????
+Rage Mage Star Bucks...Star Wars...Coincidence? I think not!
+Saphiria TheBlueDragonKnight At first it took me a while to recognize what you were saying xD, I get it Star Bucks(money) for Star Wars
so does the Federation
+Rage Mage I think the money in Star Wars should be called Starbucks. Not only is it a great name, just think of the product placement dollars they'd be raking in!
+Saphiria TheBlueDragonKnight star BUCKS,what would be missing after destroying the death stars(money)
So if we can't build the death star then what about the star forge?
if you can find out the science behind it, ill make one for you
Ian Baker What if some one else finds out the science behind it. Does the credit for the idea still go to me?
+we'll bang okay gamer poop... haha
we'll bang okay no, but I'll make one regardless
Ian Baker Then what can I have
I love the intro, always start dancing when it starts
For some reason the film theory intro feels more nostalgic than the game theory intro
A slight problem with the start of your theory - it's an Empire building the Death Star, not a democracy, and a galaxy-wide Empire capable of extracting materials from multiple planets and teleporting them and not paying for anything because he's in charge, so....yeah.
You still have to feed and house your workers. Even slave labor isn't free, because slaves cost resources to maintain.
@@andrewpatton5114 Slavery is damagin to any economy
You would want to incorporate people and make them join your economy not enslave them
@@_NeoImperia_ Slavery does not damage an economy, it's actually extremely lucrative. The issue is human rights which is why slavery is bad. If you read the first Darth Bane book you see an example of how these people are forced to work on planets just to get basic sustenance and in such massive debt they can never leave, so the companies that hire/own these workers make a huge profit by barely paying anything for the workers.
actually the emperor seemed to want to kickstart the economy and make the galaxy flourish so although I'm sure he bought at steep discount prices I feel like he would pay something at least
We need to build a Death Star, and we're going to make the Martians pay for it!
lol
space Trump!
Your fired
+Baby Dragon
HELL NO!
thd death stump
"left the majority population alone"
You know there was an entire war orchestrated by palpatine to seize that transition of power you know?
Just imagine how the movies would play out if the rebels actually saw this before they went to blow up the first Death Star
Hey, good guy Palpatine, y'know he employed millions, and created a stable galactic government.
"Employed" lol the same way Americas food companies "employ" workers.
+Yamik They were even worse. Doesn't seem possible, but they were.
+John Sledge Was still a nazi.
+John Sledge Except they were enslaved.
Just go through the list of peoples enslaved by the empire or forced into work camps or all the various papers the empire treated non-humans like scum of the earth.
Vader letting on a robot, or trandoshan to the bounty hunters would have been considered extreme and bizarre which goes to show how backwards the emperor was
+John Sledge What about that time he ordered his military to blow up two planets? Good economy or no, that's pretty bad.
11:40 Starbucks is a *REBEL CONSPIRACY!*
Eishaaya yeah and Star Trek
NANI?!?!?!?!?!
This man legit compared the destruction of the Death Star to 9/11
I love Film Theory lmao
One of the most important things to consider is that precisely in this is why the star wars worlds galactic empire had such horrible working conditions and slave mines hidden on different planets, the costs were cut by colonizing and exploiting planets (one could assume based on animated series content and this video etc). pretty nuts
Luke didn't destroy it though! The Death Star was an inside job!
SupremeEdgeLord YES HE DID, DID YOU EVEN SEE THE MOVIE. HE SHOT A MISSLE INTO THE DEATH STAR SO HE DESTROYED IT
The hedgehog God can't tell if joking or serious
The Force can't melt Quadanium steel.
How was it inside job, the empire would have known the economy factor, why waster the resources to just to make the rebalance feel like they won a important battle. I'm curious why
Random Master Is it a coincidence they invaded Hoth after? They wanted that precious oil!
“There’s a force in the galaxy more dangerous than the dark side”. I know, it’s rough coarse and gets everywhere. SAND
We ARE the Empire!
I fear sand more than anything else in the universe.
''Killing of major world leaders is bad'' Gavrilo Pincip would like to argue with that
Luke is the Star Wars equivalent of Osma Bin Laden
Multiple planets were actually enslaved by the Empire, and the Empire is very well known for being *EXTREMELY* racist, so I doubt the majority of the galaxy "doesn't realize how evil the Emperor and Vader are". Just sayin' :P.
+wishbone346 The galaxy was indoctrinated by them. All media was controlled by the government. People basically considered them Gods.
The Rebels were looked upon the same way we look upon Al-Qaeda.
+wishbone346 not canon. also the correct term would be speciesist, not racist. The empire didn't care what race of human you were int he now noncanon EU.
Jen'Ari-Asha Not really. If you watch Rebels, which is canon, you see that most people honestly didn't like Imperial rule. The Empire ruled with an iron fist. They would kill any who did not fall in line in the streets, or send them off to prisons. The majority of alien races don't seem to like them at all, and even among humans there's a decent amount of dissension. People forget that the Empire only ruled for about 3 or 4 decades too. They didn't exactly have time to indoctrinate everyone. There are plenty of people who would have lived through all of the events leading up to the Empire's creation. Luke was born the same year the Empire was founded and he's not even in his 20's by the time of A New Hope. The Empire would have one, maybe two generations of kids that would be completely indoctrinated, and even they would likely have some older people in their lives trying to sway them. Hell, we see quite a few people (kids included) that turn on the Empire with little effort or proof just because someone tells them of the evils going on. If the Empire wasn't known for that sort of thing people probably wouldn't be so quick to believe the "lies" of rebels.
wishbone346 Rebels can go fall in a sarlaac pit. It is an unrealistic kids show where a single B wing took out an entire Imperial fleet.
Rebels can go fuck itself, its horrendous.
Several books state that the Core Worlds (Where most of the galactic population lives) is completely indoctrinated by the Empire and have a fanatical loyalty to Palpatine.
Pretty much 100% of people there considered the Empire a symbol of peace and order, and the Rebels terrorists.
Source. Imperial handbook (can probably find more if you want)
GayWeedDad420YOLO Actually it's not the EU that states this, it's all from the canon. Watch Rebels and read the Tarkin book. They both show slavery quite blatantly. In the Tarkin book they flat out say that the Death Star was built using Geonosian slave labor. They most certainly did care what species you were, even in the canon.
And you're telling me after this they went and made a SECOND one?!?
"Emperor, the Death Star has been destroyed!"
"Huh? Oh, no biggie. We can just extrapolate the universe and make another."
Maybe they already had another in production and when the first blew up the second was already near completion.
The second one was built onto the remains of the first death star.
But the first one completely exploded... what was left?
Sophie the Jedi Knight It was blown up yes, but the film only shows the blast. Not what was left behind. It was likely large portions like the inner frame scattered in size ably large pieces.
Ah. That makes sense. Thanks.
This might be my favorite theory ever on this channel 💕
Sadly Matt will be leaving
“We can’t track ( insert number here) amount of dollars”
Next day: ✈️✈️🗼🗼
Ok but how much toilet paper would the death star need
Don't Mind Me is ur brain all right or do u have cancer
Cuz I have cancer too XD
a crap ton
MORE THAN A MILLION.
Don't Mind Me *facepalm*
A *crap* ton... pun intended
I like this theory, BUT:
I think we can assume a few more things about the Empire and how it dealt with its populace. We can assume, for starters, that the resources, labor and cost it took to build the Death Star (remember. It's called the DEATH. STAR.) would not have been taken ethically. A common theory (in fact, I believe it's technically confirmed) is that Geonosians were either used as slaves by force, or coerced (much like the Trade Federation were in the Prequels) to construct the Death Star. It can also be assumed, then, that Geonosis itself must have been a profitable resource planet, based on all the massive industry we can see going on there in Episode II. Therefore, we can assume that the vast majority, or possibly ALL of the resources used in constructing the Death Star were gathered from Geonosis for relatively free, and the labor used would have been free as well. After the construction of the Death Star, the Empire would have smartly turned on Geonosis and all its populace, destroying the planet, eradicating any debts or obligations it would have had toward it's people.
Secondly, we're not dealing with a free, sovereign nation here. We're dealing with a Galactic Empire. They wouldn't have had to go into debt in order to gather funding for the Death Star. Just like they took labor and resources from Geonosis, they would have simply taken monetary funding by force from other planets by raising the taxes - not by borrowing money from other (non-existent at the time) nations like the United States does as a democratic nation in *this* galaxy.
The final part about multiple factions rushing for a power grab after the collapse of the Empire is totally right. In fact, it's safe to say we're witnessing the results of that in the Sequel Trilogy.
Remember how after WWII, the USSR and NATO competed in a Cold War to grab power over a crumbled Nazi regime? The exact same thing is happening in the Star Wars galaxy at this point in the series, only far more violent. We can assume that the New Republic, with their "Capitol-from-the-Hunger-Games-esque" way of life represents western NATO states, whereas the First Order, with their authoritarian, dictatorship-style regime, represents the USSR. What's being shown in TFA is what would have potentially happened had an all-out nuclear war taken place in an alternative Cold War timeline.
Oh, and the Resistance? Yeah, that kind of reminds me of the guerrillas from the Bay of Pigs, and other extremist groups the US funded during the Cold War. Of course, I'm no historian, but that's a fun thought to entertain.
+PicturaSonus Bingo.
+PicturaSonus I think they used mostly wookie slaves, but otherwise you are correct.
+PicturaSonus Love this, I just wrote a badly worded version of this before I saw it.
In fact the empire killed off most of the geonosians after construction began in order to hide its true purpose. Also most imperials had no idea of the battle station's true purpose.
Much sense this makes!
You are forgetting that mining metal in space with the Technology that they have would cost much less because of the amount of metal that there is in space so it would cost much less
Not your strongest theory. You not only underestimate the effect on people’s lives caused by the Empire’s tyranny (the few on-screen violations committed by the Empire that you mention in this video are probably not even the tip of the iceberg of the regime’s brutality - living under a dictatorship is _no_ cake-walk) but also the harm that would be caused by allowing the Death Start to remain in operation. Not only would Alderaan likely _not_ have been the _only_ planet destroyed by it had the Rebels not destroyed it first - but there would be further consequences that I will get into in a bit.
You also over-estimate the alternative methods of revolution that the rebels had.
Yes - doing a revolution peacefully is preferable -- when it is possible. But unfortunately, that is not always the case - and it would not likely be the case. And chances are, the Empire was _very_ well guarded against any peaceful means of revolution that could have been attempted. And having a weapon capable of exploding any planet that got out of line would not have made that task any easier. (See? I _said_ I would get into the further consequences of allowing the Death Start to remain in operations - and I just did.)
Frankly - yes -- war can be destructive - and it can hurt economies. But there really was no alternative when it came to overthrowing a brutal dictator like Palpatine.
