DJI Inspire : Features, First Impressions, vs Phantom 3

- After getting some amazing shots with my modified Phantom 1 I look into some options for a new, more capable UAV. After looking at the Phantom 3 as well as a few DIY options I ended up with a DJI inspire. Here are some of my first thoughts on DJI's professional RTF Quadcopter.

Wow thanks for the warning on the batteries! I ordered 2 spares and ordered the cheaper one not knowing the difference. Good thing is, I didn't open it yet so I will be able to exchange it.
Very nice job Will. Most people don't realize how difficult it is to achieve what you did in this video. Sound, video quality and lighting are only the beginning. Then comes product knowledge and the ability to convey that. Then God forbids you mispronounce something or make an innocent mistake, because out with the torch and pitch forks it is! I spent last week trying to make a short clip reviewing our Inspire 1 Pro with the Zenmuse X5, but between my accent and poor image quality (lack of youtube experience on my end ) I have failed at it. My goal is to be able to do as good of a job as you did here. Keep up the good work! Cheers

Were you guys able to get the 333 exemptions from the FAA? I'm looking into this myself and I'm curious how long the process took?

Hi, its worth noting that the fpv image should be fast and smooth. If it's not that could very well be the device you are using is under powered for the flight app.

If you have enough budget, Inspire 1 is the best choice by now for both features and good looking.
There is a new battery for the phantom 1 that increases your flying time to almost 15 minutes. One small mod to use the battery is to file the bottom of the battery opening down a little. No mod to the battery door is necessary. I get 13 minutes with my onboard gear, previously I was getting 7 minutes.

👌🏼Ok. The Phantom 3 is running on 4S - not 6S. The firmware package should be left on the SD card so the batteries are updated upon power-on after the firmware update. DJI now released a three-battery docking station for charging batteries. I predict that the next Inspire will have 6 motors for redundancy and be able to carry the Zenmuse pro gimbals. Just a prediction.
The S800 and S900 will be officially discontinued when the next Inspire is released. Just a prediction. 😊👍✨
The CPU demands on the DJ pilot app are substantial and while I agree with you it's nice to have a bright tablet I think an iPad would have more CPU power so I personally use an iPad. Also anyone reading this should go to the DJI website and make sure that the tablet is approved
you should really do all this with the props off.. just in case.
Awesome overview of the Inspire 1 VS Phantom 3, I have been flying the Q500+ and find it to be a very stable platform for video. The only down side is the range. So I have been looking at the Inspire 1 but I have to wonder how far out are we from seeing the Inspire 2 come onto the market? Awesome information here for sure, thanks for sharing.
I think it's important to note he went from a Phantom 2 to an Inspire 1. The Phantom 3 has almost all the same features, except a couple. The only one that could benefit me would be the landing gear getting out of the way, but it also begs the question; is the camera more in jeopardy of serious injury without the legs protecting it if you clip something and take a tumble? I've actually gotten really good getting around the legs issue; flying sideways and rotating around objects. Is the Inspire more durable? Thoughts on the camera being less protected in a tumble with the Inspire? The 4K is garbage by the way on my P3, which I assume is the same on the Inspire. Way over compressed with artifacts. Plus all my deliverables are in 1080 anyways. In fact I just crashed my P3P again having to send it in for repair. I ordered an advanced version this time cause never use the crappy 4K anyways. I already have 2 of the better charges.

Have you made any video showing how to set the two buttons underneath the control box that will allow one person to click the button and allow the camera to rotate 360 and the second button set to bring the camera back to the front ... can you show this?

So, I know this vid is 4yrs old now. But what are your thoughts, on if the Inspire 1 is still a great rig today?? Leaving the Inspire 2 out of picture.
Not bad tho. But u better upgrade camera to x5
P3 for 1 person and easy travel, Inspire for everything else.
Keep in mind that people are putting dedicated board cams on Insipires. If you're not close and flying LOS, it's hard trying to fly while someone else is moving your camera and your view.
You can use GPS when piloting and someone else is using the camera. A bit difficult since you don't have visual and have to use numbers and a birds eye view map, but better than looking the wrong way.

Nice review. I really like the Inspire but there are a few features that put me off buying it. Don't like the white controllers/drone, I'd prefer a GoPro option and as I have "OCD" the red lights on the front annoy me...

What are the rules with making money from drones in the USA? I thought that it was prohibited to use them in a commercial capacity? Have the rules changed?

I use one and it is fantastic for fpv.
With the Enrique Iglesias incident in which he accidentally grabbed the prop of the concert owned drone, it could have been avoided if they painted the tip of the props alternating colors red, white and red. Black props are pretty much invisible when they are spinning.
***** Yes, I agree. On the news segment I saw on tv they said that he did it often to send drone selfies to fans. It is totally irresponsible and looking for trouble grabbing and hanging onto a drone with 4 whirring blades like he did. He is very lucky it didn't hit him in the face once its stability was disrupted by him. Since the news said he did it often, I thought that he may continue to do it and I was trying to think of a way to avoid putting ones hand into a sharp high rpm propeller. Thinking about it more I don't think he will be sending drone selfies anymore. His fingers are to valuable.

Will, thanks for great discussion and info. I recently purchased Phantom 3 and having a lot of fun. I am very interested in future discussion using quadcopter for business. I design recreation/destination resorts in other countries and plan to use quadcopter capabilities for land/landscape inventory. What I would be very interested in is discussion on pricing structure for services. I have no idea what services cost, editing, post production, and final output. I would also be interested in recouping cost for capitalizing (buying equipment). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I use the Q500,,, for my small operation, and same thing, I had a Phantom and people would recognize it, the Typhoon, is kinda different in fact they think its an Inspire,, Im now thinking of getting the Typhoon + version in addition to what I have

Have you considered getting a nexus 9 instead when going with another tablet?
***** I would like to see that comparison, the Nexus 9 has a fairly bright screen but I'm not sure how it compares to an AMOLED display, one benefit is you'd get more natural colours with the Nexus.
***** I'm curious about this as well but very few reviews touch on outside screen readability. As far as I know, there is no authoritative source that ranks screen brightness/readability for tablets.

Ryan Monroe just simply the phantom is half the price has exact same features except dual remote im a single pilot and just fly for fun and i only bought an inspire because at the time i had a phantom 2 and was thinking about getting lightbridge and thats when the inspire came out so i figured its the same price so when the phantom 3 came out i sold it to get the other half back you also get more flight time.
xmunoz99 interesting. Very good points too. I have had the inspire 1 only a short time but often wonder why I didn't get the p3 due to the same reasons you listed. Might sell it as well.
xmunoz99 should have traded with me. I prefer the Inspire over the P3. If you don't need indepedent 360 gimbal control, the P3 is the better deal.
ken masters that is a good point and one other is the Inspire 1 handles the winds better. I live near the coast and can easily fly in 20mph winds where I'm not sure the Phantom would do as well due to aerodynamics.
You need to download the Android app from DJI web-sight. It looks like you have 1.0.10 and not 1.1.0. I have the Phantom 3 and it uses the same app.

Nice drone and video! I sold my Phantom 4 now after 61 tour 16 houers 30 minute in air With NO problem. I sold my Phantom 4 and order Mavic Pro! Inspire 1 is big but awsome drone. Maby I bay It so Mavic frore travel and Inspire 1 fore tour around there I live. But Dji chould use doubbel IMU and Compass In Inspire 1 to. All New drone have doubbel sensors now. One day I will bay the Inspire but I already order Mavic Pro and wait fore It now. DJI makes the best drone on marked.

Inspire 1- Phantom 3
costs 3k - phantom 3 costs around 500 to 1k
Lasts around 15 minutes - Phantom lasts more (around 23 minutes)
Both can record the same quality
If anything the only pro it has is its transformation feature where it lifts its propellers so its out of the cameras view
+Silver_Paladin i agree the phantom 3 does the same thing as the inspire accept the inspire cost a fuck tone more and is heavier and bigger and harder to travel with .

Really nice video, I too am an Inspire 1 owner but I have yet to see an in depth review/explanation. Regarding an FPV setup I wanted to go with DSLRPro but after spending the money for 2 Inspire 1's, two iPad2 mini's, two GoProfessional Compact Cases, 12.1" 32-channel Diversity monitor & being an FPV guy already I went with putting my own FPV setup on her & I copied this EXACT setup & I've had NO problems so far: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2394667 Good luck with your FPV setup
***** I didn't want to open her up & void the warranty tapping in to her own power so if you notice the setup I followed he uses a 3s 500mAh batt secured above the Vtx, that's how I have her setup up. I used his exact list regarding materials, looking forward to your setup!! Keep us posted
