I just finished a clutch replacement in my 93 VR4. Quite ironic I was recommended this video. I only found out about 3000GTs through the original episode of wheeler dealers. Saw it on TV, and instantly fell in love. Searched for a few years, found one, and bought it. I love my 93 VR4, and it's terribly fun to drive!

I bought a 3000GT SL. It ticked. I changed the oil with Penzoil 10w30 Synthetic and it stopped ticking. Most of this ticking can be caused by low oil presure, caused by oil pump gasket leaking, or old oil. 190,000 miles with original lifters and no tick.

Is this ticking merely cosmetic or is there an emission issue? Specifically, is a car with an engine tick more likely to fail the regular vehicle check?
I bought a Pajero iO 1.8 at auction two years ago, deregistered with no Shaken which just got by exhaust emission check on it thied attempt; high hydro-carbon was the actual problem. Now scrapping seems the obvious decision as it only cost me $800. Really unfortunate as it is such a good vehicle to cope with up-hill deep snow.
It would be useful to know if this problem could be fixed by removing the rockers and by changing the lifters to the 3.0 mm type.

I worked at a Mitsu dealer for six years. Every spring when people would pull their 3000s out of the garage after sitting for six months they would come to the dealer with a tick in the engine. A distributor for BG Products came in and showed us an oil additive called MOA. We would change the oil and filter and add the additive to the oil and drive it for a few miles. The tick was gone. Customers would come in and buy it . The lifter is so tinny I think it would bleed out all the oil and get air bound. After 25 years I still use the additive in all my cars.

No need to dismantle or replace anything at all. Remove the plugs, drain the oil and replace the filter. Fill the engine with 15litres of brake and clutch cleaner and leave overnight for it to dissolve sludge. Spin the engine over on the starter until the oil pressure guage registers. Repeat around a dozen times then drain out the brake cleaner and replace the filter again.
The ticking noise will be gone.
Run the engine for 20 miles or so and replace the oil & filter again, job done..

Oddly enough , lifter tick isn't unique to any one single 6G7x --- or Mitsubishi engine altogether. Even Evos have it.
Somehow it's just inherent in Mitsubishi's design. The older they are, the louder they get.
With the last and greatest of the Cyclones - the 6G75M, we just learn to live with it. Sounds like a diesel during warmup, and a 4-cyl ticking once it goes to regular idle.
I think by far the worst case of tick happens to be in the 6Axx, found in the 7/8G Galants and the one and only FTO. In these, lifters have a polypropylene (plastic) cap to attempt to "soften" that lifter tick. As you might know - plastic cracks easily.
    Oh well :)
It's like arguing semantics between a 2" or 3" exhaust on an unmodified car. Either way, it'll run the same - just crank up the music and you'll drive happy either way.
