FYI- the above shots are not "B roll" (which is subordinate footage that alternates with the main footage seen in a final film); the above footage is "behind the scenes" (shot wild to document the filmmaking, and will not appear in the final film). These secondary images are often shot without sound, as the sound from the primary footage is expected to continue while the other images are shown, so B-roll may be shot by smaller second unit crews, since there is no need for sound. B-roll footage is often shot after the main footage. The term B-roll originates from a particular solution to the problem of visible splices in the narrow film stock used in 16 mm film. To avoid this problem, Two sequences of shots were assembled into 2 different rolls/reels, the odd-numbered shots on the A-roll, and the even-numbered shots on the B-roll, such that all of the shots on one roll were matched by black leader on the other roll, in a checkerboard pattern (an alternate name for the process was "checkerboard printing".) To join the 2 rolls together, unexposed raw film stock was exposed twice, once to the A-roll, then it was exposed again to the B-roll. Interesting counter-example- if you've ever seen "Stranger Than Paradise" you'll see black leader between cuts, as the then student filmmaker Jim Jarmusch didn't want to pay for both "A" and "B" rolls, so to avoid the splices showing on film, he simply alternated black leader between the shots on the same roll.
