I really like that they are portraying the 1950s Hollywood studios owning everything, like even the actors' private lives and image, because that was common.
Nobody is going to comment on Scarllet's performance? She was so funny!! In a very subtle inteligent way xD At the same time she's being this ethereal mermaid creature while the 50's movie is being filmed, she still has these diva mundane really funny maneirisms! People get mesmerized by her beauty, but she's also very sensible and witty xD
Why cannot one find a good performer in a movie for the masses? Or even a quality performance in a less quality movie? To me that is a logical fallacy. * You have so many examples: Sir Ian McKellen (Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre of Great Britain), Dame Judi Dench (also having done Shakespeare in theatre), Adam Driver, Tom Hiddleston (studied in Cambridge and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and does reading literature sessians , such as Jonh le Carré, Tolstoy Shakespeare..), Michael Fassbender, or less known mainstream actors but who gave their great contribution like Catherine McCormack... And I don't know of course all instances... If that is your attempt to help someone to get an alternative better education, the little surliness embedded in it, is not encouraging at all of and makes it fail miserably. Have a good and happier day please. *Or even a good performance in a actor that may or may not be one's favorite?
"How am I? Wet." She doesn't really look wet in that scene though. In fact, she didn't look wet when coming out of the water. ...I'm beginning to question a lot of things right now.
and that's how they filmed the Esther Williams scene they took ispiration of (look for "Millior Dollar Mermaid" on youtube, it makes the Scarlett Johansson scene looks minimal compared to it)
Rewind shot. It's an old special effects trick they often used in "aquatics" of that era, where they would shoot the actress going into the water, and then rewind it to make it look like she's rising magically out of the water completely dry and composed. Though how they managed to shoot such a scene on a live set is a mystery that can only be explained as parody.
This is Oscar worthy playing. She is so talented! Beautiful, grossing totally and her acting!!! Here she created amazing piece !small role but a diament!!So rough, thick like muck woman hahaha the public loves her and imagine a gifted warm artful actress- but behind the camera turns out it is rough, charmless, factory worker hehe
1:11 is brilliant in its simplicity. Reversed footage is normally obvious, but somehow the waves look natural and nothing gives it away. You sense something’s off, but it’s like a good magic trick. Once it’s explained you can’t unsee it, but you now respect its simplicity and the skill to do it well. Sadly today you usually just assume everything is CGI, instead of thinking “how did they do that?” and engaging your imagination.
Bubbles Smubbles. I came out of a coma to see this. (almost, really) It was such a pleasure. Gorgeous to look at, and just great fun. I needed this film. I think my favorite scene was the Chinese restaurant. Beautiful. Brolin and that hair were perfection. Big fan of Intolerable Cruelty, The Coca Cola Kid, The Good Thief, Inherent Vice, and all things shining.
@@aleciathomas5703 I am aware. Those are some of the others tbh. Also her aquabatics and such. Million dollar mermaid is an undisputed number one. But this video is still A tier.
@@gerarddip no for sure it is. A lot of people have never heard of Esther I’m glad you have I love this film and the Cohens and how it paid homage. I saw it on opening weekend. Scarlett is very talented herself for sure
Really wish the film had gotten a couple decent shots of her in her full mermaid tail. Costumer must have head-desked when they saw their lovely design didn't get displayed well in the movie.
Anyone else thinks this the representation of the moment she got pregnant (her ovum -the swimmer's circle- being fertilized -her as a mermaid/spermatozoon-)? and her angry reaction with the "DAMMIT!" represents the moment she realized she got pregnant after that unprotected intercourse. LOL!!!
This inept pastiche of an Esther Williams aquamusical only underlines the brilliant originality of the real thing, and the magnificent and beautiful athleticism of the woman who created and personified it.
I may be male, but I would LOVE to wear Scarlett Johanssons's mermaid costume and tiara! If I got the opportunity to buy that mermaid costume, I would immediately take it!
I really like that they are portraying the 1950s Hollywood studios owning everything, like even the actors' private lives and image, because that was common.
Jordon Veatch Really?
warren byrne look up Judy garland and all the shit she went through
Jordon Veatch Yes,like Adrianna Caselotti Snow White's voice actress could appear in anymore /any other movies.
It still happens to an extent but nowhere near the level of back then
It was their contracts. Basically didn't know better. But you want to work don't cha?
Scarlett should do more comedies. She’s so funny when she gets in the zone
Especially in a Coen Brothers’ comedy
Vince was not minor!
lol i love how she actually hits him with the crown from across the room
She Frisbee'd That Crown Like a PRO! 😜
And left handed!
@@jeffreymeehan3116 she is left handed 😅
what a performance! I love that overly saccharine smile and the contrast with how she talks, sits, and smokes.
That's exactly what I was thinking. She still can pull that innocent teenager smile out of mothballs. Perfect casting.
And she was so close to finishing that scene....
Crazy to think those water ballet movies were a whole sub genre back then!
i love scarlett in this film and i love her accent in that film. i love the way she says "hey... buddy!" i would pay good money to have her talk like.
thevoid99 watch her with a Jersey accent in Don John
That's just her accent. She's from the only state that matters :)

Ha ha. Witty? Taste is not debatable. You need an educated society first, not the dumbest down masses of today.

Outstanding acting. Very much into character
Love this film. Underated. Every performance is hilarious
*”The public loves you because they know how innocent you are.” “That’s true.”* As she sits there hauling on a cigarette, pregnant, and unmarried.
Yes, by today's standards this would be considered trashy behavior.

Scarlett Johansson as a mermaid.

They probably filmed it backwards and then edited it in reverse

This is was SO badly done. Really not discret and noticeable at first glance.
it's intended to be "badly done", exactly like in the Esther WIlliam scene
Scarlett is so Good in this role.
Funny. "Scram!" in that rapid vintage accent. .. 👍
