The way the band composes their songs is rather unique. The guitar player ( Adam Jones ) and the bassist ( Justin Chancellor ) come up with some riffs then get together and play around with them. Once they have something they get with the drummer ( Danny Carey ) and experiment with different time signatures, tempo, structure and tone. They then compose a finished piece of music that they're satisfied with. Only then do they send it to Maynard James Kennan the lyricist and singer. He listens to the tone and emotion of the music and comes up with lyrics that match. Until their latest album they never included a lyric sheet, wanting the listener to listen to the music first and then to listen and interpret the lyrics on a personal level. So how your doing this reaction is exactly how the band would intend it be done. You're getting precariously close to a hole you will soon find yourself sucked into. Enjoy the ride.✌🤘

@@ethanrosen5517 , every musician I know or have talked to say as far as the song writing process, that it's a collaboration between the lyricist and the musician, so I don't think it's all that common. Elton John and Bernie do it opposite of that. Bernie gives the lyrics to Elton, then Elton writes the music.✌

This is why they have the band name Tool. It's the tool that you use for whatever you are going through. Interpret the lyrics how you see fit to help you through whatever shit is going on in your life. No interpretation is wrong as it is dependent on the listener. Tool is absolutely brilliant and take an approach to music that is the complete package.

Listening to Tool and wearing a Beavis & Butthead t-shirt... LOL, so awesome!
This was my first Tool favorite. I love the bass intro, the constantly changing tempo, the epic build-up in the latter half of the song, and the intense drumming at the finish. Just a great song and so worthy of winning the 2002 Grammy for Best Metal Performance. It's good that you followed up with they lyrics afterwards because they're always deep and thought-provoking and it's a lot to decipher while you're taking in the complexity of their music.
Anyway, keep going with the Tool... there's so much more to discover!

Solid reaction! The logical next choice for Tool reactions would be The Grudge - first song on the album literally kicks you in the face with music. The lyrical themes relate to those of Schism and there are also multiple time changes. I feel strange saying it, but Listening to Tool really can make one a better person because the music is so internal and personal to whatever the listener is going through.

Tool is unorthodox. They strive to be like nothing you've ever heard before. Don't worry about trying to understand the lyrics on your first listen. It takes a few sit downs to really understand their philosophies. Some songs also have more than one meaning, some are pretty straight forward, and some are them just messing with their fans when they make it seem super cryptic but they are actually just explaining the recipes for cookies. They are wild man!

  • @tidewell

Tool actually never included any lyrics in their albums (cds) until the most recent one in 2019... the packaging was usually just artwork from 1992 until now. Listeners had to figure the lyrics by just playing the albums..

  • @silvervial

Wow, that first interpretation is a bit out there. It doesn't actually have anything to do with religion. The song is about the break up of a relationship. The pieces used to fit, they used to get along and love each other, but they stopped communicating and that cold silence will doom the relationship completely if they don't start talking again. They need to "re-discover communication" or they will "watch the temple topple over" the "temple" is their relationship, this special thing they built together that is crumbling down. It's a call to reconcile. But Maynard writes all the lyrics of all the songs to be open to interpretation, yet he also chides in another song, "over-thinking, over-analyzing separates the body from the mind, withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind." So basically, the principle of Occam's razor in terms of interpreting his lyrics. Maynard sings and writes for two other bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, and most times those are more straightforward than what he writes in Tool. I have subbed to the channel and am looking forward to following your Tool journey. Cheers and stay safe! :D

  • @iamthewalrus.

Surprisingly that *tempo change is actually a time signature change. Something I recommend is finding the beat, the place to tap your foot to, although time signatures change, tool strategically changes them while still keeping the beat on the same tempo. They just change how loud they play or where to accent the notes to through you off, but the root beat will most likely stay the same.

Don't worry too much if you get a little lost. They change up the timing of the song alot, and the lyrics can be really overwhelming as well. Most people can't even find a comfortable way to bob their head while listening. These songs are complex so just experience them as you can first time around.
I think the most outstanding lyric, that I have to keep in my thoughts all the time because of social issues: "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion." Keep communicating, don't keep yourself bottled up inside.

Great that you try to musically take it in, it's a direct contrast of what many people are used to focusing on the lyrics because music layer is 4/4, very repetitive and therfore so expectable.
    To the meaning:
It's not about a singular thing as understanding is a matter of where you are emotionally. I could give you a whole interpretation that stems a relationship case but to me it seems too unplausible to limit this great lyrics to that as it has much deeper potencial, for me anyways.
The song, for me, is about ideologies and is very fitting to the current outrage of blacklivesmatter for example.
The ideologies (worldviews) be it raccism, Religion, et cetera, are forces that divide a common fact, that we are all one, one and the same species (the pieces fit in contrast to these ideologies differentiating us in separate "worths").
"Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy.. compassion", while the church bells come along: Imagine this, where people are sorted out simply because they don't worship a certain God. Or when the church dictates what you can not say or be, these things therfore are not spoken about creating antipathy for the humans affected by it (homosexuality, et cetera). It's these kind of divisionary ideologies that split humans apart, this silence that won't let us overcome these ridiculous separations and only if we talk openly about these issues we can overcome our ideologies who put these biases upon us.
I hope you carry on with Tool, their whole music is very critical and personal and tries to help you and me to grow beyond our own little worlds problems by searching rather in ourselves and not in others. All sorts of emotions are to be found and discovered, eventually leading one to be more self aware and open. Be well ✌️
