This particular song addresses the hypocrisy of trumped up drug charges, thus the references to kangaroo courts and pissing all over his black kettle which is him addressing the hypocrisy by the title of the song being the "Pot" calling the kettle black.

disagree, I think it's about divorce court. she's accusing him of cheating when she's cheated more than him. " Rob the grave to snow the cradle." She's younger and probably got pregnant then hooked him in court. Maybe she even had an abortion to "burn the evidence" that it wasn't his. She's in court lying about him crying alligator tears and her blue eye makeup is running (weeping shades of cozened indigo)

If you're having trouble understanding Maynard's delivery, you're not alone. Sometimes we forget, since we've heard these songs hundreds if not thousands of times, that Maynard's vocal choices are not always easy for newcomers. Go ahead and have the lyrics up on Genius or wherever so that you can pick out what he's saying. Of course, if you listen to the songs over and over again, like most of us have for decades, you will no longer have any trouble understanding the words and in fact you'll be correcting the lyric sites :D Great reaction and I really appreciate your willingness to study the music. It is so worthy and so rewarding.

Lol so true. Tool music is notoriously worded wrong in lyrics videos, lol I see it all the damn time, it drives me insane lol. I remember years ago reading that Maynard didn't want the lyrics in the CD case so people could essentially hear whatever they wanted to hear. Although their new album I ordered has the lyrics in the case, but funnily enough, I've seen these lyric videos with incorrect lyrics as well! 😁

    • @l.ronhubbard5445

I've been listening to Tool since Sober came out and I still don't pick up the depth of meaning of these songs on my own. My whole reason for getting into reaction videos at my age was to hear how these songs hit other people and I am amazed at people who can pull any meaning out of these songs on a first listen. I'm always so lost in the music that until I read the lyrics I usually only understand about every fifth word and with Maynard I really need to hear or read almost all the words and think about how he assembles them together before I can get at any of the layers of meaning.

The way that Tool composes their songs is rather unique. They guitar player and the base player will come up with some riffs and jam back and forth until they think have have something. They then get together with Danny Carey the drummer who then adds the time signatures and slowly build what they have into a cohesive and musically, finished song. Only then do they present what they have to the singer. Maynard listens to the song and emotions and slowly builds the lyrics around what he's hearing. Tool for the longest time didn't include lyrics with their music, as they feel the music comes 1st. That may give you some idea of how to proceed in your Tool journey. Their lyrics are mostly cryptic and allows the listener to interpret them on individual base, so pretty much, no interpretation is wrong. It changes from person to person and most fans of the band find they change on a personal level over time. Subbed and will check out more of your reactions.✌🤘

One of the reasons why their sound is so unique is that the three instrumentalists, compose the song, work it out, record it and send the tapes to Maynard. He then interprets it and writes lyrics to fit the music. He's essentially a 4th instrumentalist in a way. Anyway, I really enjoyed the video. It's a cool feeling to see a new fan emerge from a first time listener experience and you have a great format and you're very thoughtful. What we the people found out was that Judges who were not local residents often didnt give a damn about the facts or outcomes... They were paid based on cases closed... So justice and accountability went out the window.

Your definitely right about multiple guitars. When you produce rock or metal you tend to always have 2-4 guitar tracks in order for it to sound massive and really cut through the mix so it stands out. Same will go for vocals. Bass and drums will usually get one track because those sit back in the mix because the guitar and vocals don't have enough low end to really mess with them too much.

Right in two is a great song whenever you can get to it. Great lyrics and a beautiful melody. Not to mention the Indian and African drum influence throughout the song. Their drummer is highly influenced by African drums, as well as many other styles, so you will hear him using certain drums and techniques that have never been done before.

Great video my friend! Absolute gem of a band that noone can really compare in their category. Keep checking out tool and you will get alot of views. Tool has one of the fiercest, most loyal fan bases of literally ANY rock band, and you will find out why the more you dig into them. Someone already told you to check out lyrics while listening, that's definitely a good idea. They have some incredibly deep music. The music is nice, but when you dig into the lyrics, they will blow your mind. Alot of their songs are about personal, and spiritual growth. And other songs are just hilarious troll songs, while others are extremely somber and sad. I recommend the entire lateralus album, one by one. The whole album is like one long song, with one main concept for the whole thing. Sorry for the book I typed, lol. Anyways, welcome to the tool black hole, you will dig them.

As you have probably already heard you our own 2 a band that really can't be compared to anybody else because they almost transcend music. That sounds fucked up but when you open your mind and listen to the lyrics melodies and every instrument as a whole, not just hear but listen period. Hopefully you can see what I mean. Would love to see you check out some of their old stuff before you hit their new stuff. There are so many good songs it's hard to choose from but The Grudge and Lateralus are two that I would try to hit first before moving on to all of their other fire ass music. And they have some of the best production you will ever hear. I always love seeing people be open-minded and check out stuff they normally would not because sometimes in life I feel like I'm the only one 😂. Good shit is good shit m, no matter what genre it may fall under. So thank you for this content my friend.

it's all good. Tool is heavily bass oriented accompanied by one of the best drummers to pick up the sticks. Maynards vocals are widely considered a Genius lyricists with the range to match. Adam guitar is so unique. Its doesn't sound very intricate or tough to play which is why most people dont give him much credit as a guitarist. If they only knew how to play. keep up the positive attitude and with time the vocals will become clearer. Took me awhile to understand hip hop and rap. Peace brotha

You have to let your ear adjust to this type of music if you want pick out the lyrics. It should be said that, in this genre, the lyrics aren’t any more important than the instruments to the meaning of the song.
I would listen to “Vicarious” or “46’&2”’ next.

I will try to do lyric videos because it is very helpful. I'll listen to this band for years without ever knowing some of the lyrics and whenever I discovered the lyrics they hit a new plateau. you gotta combine the vocals & lyrics with the music to get to that place in my humble opinion of course. The band really wants you to interpret the meaning of the lyrics how ever you wish. That's why some songs are kind of hard to make out and it's almost like the vocals are mixed in with the instruments just as if it is another instrument so sometimes it's hard to make them out. It made it much easier for me to either read the lyrics while listening or watch lyric videos. Suggest checking out "the grudge" and or "Lateralus" next before getting into later stuff. Hopefully it will blow your mind as it did mine. But you do it however you wish my friend, there are a lot of bossy ass people that demand you do this a certain way but...F em'.

I read this interesting perspective from someone on Reddit who made connections to this song and Led Zepplin. The post mentioned how they’ve stolen material from other bands and it said they copied/stole a lot of style from the famous blues player muddy waters. They were sued by a band named Spirit for stealing their song and making it the intro to Stairway to Heaven. It’s a blatant rip off but Zepplin actually won the case. Like “liar, lawyer. Mirror show me what’s the difference”. The post made a lot of other great points. I’m not saying it’s true but it is interesting. One thing is true is that he’s definitely condemning hypocrisy. His lyrics are always multifaceted and hard to interpret but really kind of for you to interpret for yourself about what it means to you, maybe. www.reddit.com/r/ToolBand/comments/c8pr68/the_pot_is_really_about_led_zeppelin/
