- Kate Goes Flying!
In today's video, I fly a plane with my Dad. This is the real thing, not an airplane simulator! You will see the beautiful scenic views of Montana. I show you how we take our plane out of the hanger and do our pre-flight checks. Dad and I take off in the plane and the views are amazing! We check our farm fields by air so we can see if the straw piles got burned. We fly over our home place or Grandpa's farm. You can see the old elevator too. Then we fly around over the Knees which are important geologically. They are a formation that looks like knees. There are a lot of arrowheads and artifacts that are found there. We see the beautiful Rocky Mountain Front of Montana. The sunset is pretty amazing. After checking on our fields from the airplane we head back to the airport and land the plane. Dad lets me taxi down the runway and I try to keep it on the yellow line. LOL. We put the plane back in the hanger and I show you the plane we usually fly and that I am used to. It's unusual to have a day without a lot of wind in winter and it made for a perfect fly day even though there is a bit of snow on the ground. Also a big thank you to all my wonderful subscribers. My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Kate, I have been flying for almost 40 years and know many pilots. I think your maturity level and ability to operate complex machinery while monitoring what is going on outside and inside the machine will serve you well in becoming a pilot. You also appear to listen well which will be important when you begin formal training. My father taught me the basics of flying too. When you begin formal instruction, I recommend that you use an instructor that will provide you with a syllabus and has a formal layout where the ground school works well with the flying instruction. There are many good online courses that will prepare you for the written and oral parts of the exam. I've seen many students get frustrated when trying to learn from instructors that don't have an organized approach and course layout. I'm glad you have your father to help you as he already has a good idea of how to best approach the process. Most of all BE SAFE and then also HAVE FUN. Best, Doc.

I agree with drumsticktom, dad seems grumpy at times but he’s teaching you, and you listen. My dad did the same with me and we raced sailboats together all over the Great Lakes. Went on to get my USCG 100 ton ocean operators license and it was quite an adventure. Thank you for your videos, they are inspiring and informing. Wish you well in your life Kate!

I didn't know your Dad fly's planes. Such a surprise because I thought he was just a farmer and bought tractors and combines and taught you how to drive each. Now he's teaching you how to fly a plane! You have a wonderful father, and he is raising you right because there doesn't seem to be anything he can't do, and he teaches you to do it too. Just found this. I grew up on a ranch in Western North Dakota and I loved the farming part of the life. It is so much fun watching you interact with your dad and the rest of your family. You're so respectful, you and your dad seem to enjoy each other's company. There doesn't seem to be anything that you're afraid to try. Keep up the great work.

I did basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri in 1962. I spent a lot of time at Fort Riley, Kansas. Both places had a lot of farming and ranching kids in uniform. While most of us drove cars and rode buses on leave, the farm and ranch kids flew their airplanes to and from the bases. I was very impressed by their skills as soldiers and as pilots.

When I first started work, 36 years ago, I learned to fly a Cessna 172. Then I got a girlfriend who was more complex and challenging and beautiful and expensive than the Cessna. I gave up the flying, married her and never looked back, a wonderful woman. If you can afford the time and money, get your PPL as others have advised. It teaches you more than just how to fly. Kate girl I see that now you have your pilot license . Girl years ago I had a chance to get my pilot license but you see like a dummy I told the guy that I would just wait until I get out of the army and then get my pilot license. But you see I found out that pilot license cost a heck of lot of money that I don't have. But you see Kate I am glad that you did get your pilot license. Just be careful when you and your family are flying in yalls airplane.

Definitely go for your pilot's licence Kate as soon as you can. I qualified as a glider pilot when I was 16 and I remember it well. I'm an old man now (77) but I still remember how much fun I had. Happy landings!!

Definitely get that pilot’s license. I’ve had my commercial license since my early 20s. We used to check weeds in the wheat with a Piper Super Cub when the roads were washed out, muddy, or snowed in. Great big old tundra tires, didn’t even feel the drill rows.

Well, in my younger years my goal was to be an airline pilot! The day I moved away from Montana (Vaughn) to Oregon, I was 19 and stopped halfway at my cousins, who was an instructor. He took me up and it was at that moment, I finally knew what I wanted for a career. I had joined the military at 17, so I saved all my money and started flying. I got all my licenses up to multi engine instrument instructor and taught for the next five years. Met a girl, switched to law enforcement, and boom, 30:years later I wish I was still flying and living in Montana.., lol. Moral of that story, life changes but your pilot license never expires and you will never regret it unless you don’t do it. Looked like an Arrow Commander there, but I have not seen an NDB for years... lol. Go get em and Merry Christmas!

I truly expect to see you in a space shuttle in about 10 years!!!! If that was your goal, I have no doubt that you would accomplish it. Your zest for life, and your Can Do attitude are both earmarks of high achievers. I know your parents are so very proud of you. I vote for more aviation videos! I have no idea how old Kate is, but she seems much more accomplished than most of her peers. She seems unafraid to tackle any challenge. She has unbelievable communication skills. I foresee many universities pursuing her with scholarships in hand. She would be great in any journalism program or agriculture communication program. I hope she never allows anyone to identify her as a celebrity. Please stay grounded in reality.

It is also important to be able to talk to anyone no matter what they look like because you should never judge a book by its cover. I think it is sad that some people won't talk to others because they don't like how they look. My mom has shown me that everyone is different and if you choose to not talk to certain people you might miss some incredible stories or miss learning something that can make a difference. She really encourages me to be able to visit with older people because they have great wisdom and sometimes no one else will take the time to talk to them. It is also really important to smile at people and be kind!

Thank you for your story and kindness!! I am very grateful to spend time with my Dad and Grandfather. In Montana it takes thousands of acres to earn a living dry land farming. I am not sure exactly how many we have.

Kudos to you Kate...Yes get flying...Im same age your father and miss the chance to fly these days living not far North in Canada...Farming and flying is such a natural together although I know not much about farmimg and love watching your instructions on farming. Such a treat to see your video on flying its a passion of mine and always encourage anyone wanting to get licensed its a great build of confidence in anyones age and really its such a beautiful lifestyle...I will continue watching your farming episodes and learn from you too... I had some friends who used to live with a view of the glaciers out their back window in Montana. We also have a couple of Beef operations here in Ohio who also have open ranges in Montana
