Kate, it is important that more people get connected to how their food is produced. I am 78 and will be teaching a class on farming in the 21st century this winter to a group of retirees. . So much has changed in my lifetime in terms of farming and technology. I am missing harvesting this fall for the first time since I retired due to Covid. I help harvest wild rice about 500 miles north of your location. Keep your passion for farming.
@@KatesAg My classs will probably be on zoom through our local college's Institute for Learning in Retirement. I am planning on 8 wks. one day a week for two hours a session. I will send you a picture of one of the rice harvesters in action.
@@KatesAg Awesome! Yes it certainly does. You should consider doing a Kate's Farm History video with lots of 4 generations of pictures. It would be your most interesting and most popular video so far. I would be fascinated. Do you have many old pictures? My grandfather said to me when I was a kid "ask all your questions now because I won't be here forever."
Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion you are more than welcome! question: why do you cut wheat in windrows and the pick them up later. why not cut and pick up the grain in one step as i have seen done on other farm channels?
Thank you that’s an excellent question. In our area we commonly get a fly called Saw Fly. They cut through the wheat stem and lay eggs in it. When this happens the wheat no longer stands up anymore instead it lays down. This makes it really hard to strait cut the wheat because we would have to lay our combine headers on the ground and we would not be able to get all of the wheat. We try and swath the wheat before it falls down. When the wheat is swathed it is much easier to pick up with the combine because it is all together rather than laying down. Occasionally we are able to strait cut the wheat because we plant semi - solid stem wheat which is a variety of wheat with a stronger stem that doesn’t fall down as easy. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for your question.
Some excellent fly fishing there in Montana!! Kate, maybe in another video you can go with dad and do some trout fishing?! Would be cool. If not, I totally would understand. Great information about when your family started way back then, and the homestead...you should be proud, very proud to be part of such an amazing family with that background. Most people may think, awe just farming, but there's much more to farming that meets the eye! And in today's world a gal like you at your age, with so much farming knowledge, is just something to behold :-) I've mentioned it in another comment I left, like a breath of fresh air :-) nowadays, most at your age, don't even know where their nose is still lol! I'm harvesting soybeans off of the land that my great-grandfather harvested Tobacco off of, yes been in the family that long. Kate enjoyed your video thanks for making them.
Nice video Kate! You may be able to tilt the steering wheel down and hold it steady with your knees while having a drink... it works for me! Very heavy windrows!! 😀
Hi Kate thank you for this video always a very good weather at home it's true the harvesters are machines that work all the time in the dust and they have to watch the temperatures here in France there have been fires with harvesters of the Laverda brand which have recesses around the engine or the exhaust where straw accumulates and it is very dangerous in my town and the one next to us we have already lost two machines hello grandfather and take good care of you🙋♂️Dave
Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion Hi Kate Laverda combines are red with a bit of white we also have a lot of Case Ih and a lot of John Deere like at home. thank you for your answer and take good care of yourself 🙋♂️Dave
Although I’ve never been a farmer I’ve always been Intrigued by farming and even have an X-Box game of farming. I’d love an opportunity to run n some of the equipment one day. I think it would be an awesome experience.
Are you home schooled ? How many years have you been working on the farm? Do you do other things on farm ? Do you have brothers and sisters? Do you have women in your life? I have just started watching your channel. You're very impressive young lady. You seem to know a lot about the combine. I have a small homestead in South Carolina. I most just raise food for my family. I only have 10 acere but I'm a retired factory worker. I just want to wish you good luck in your future. I hope that you and your family have a safe and profitable harvest. Patrick Haman
Thank you so much for your really kind words. I am in 11th grade. This is my second year running combine. My mom is really awesome and so is my Grandmother and my mom's sister. They are all entrepreneurs and highly educated with many post graduate degrees. I am very blessed. Thank you for your great questions.
President at the time opened up this area in 1910 ish. Lots of homesteads at the same time. 1916 ish had a bad drought, 2/3rds of them packed up and many of the remaining started expanding. Both sets of my grandparents did homesteads at that time near this area. They met in 2nd grade in a combined school house.
We are seeing a lot of farm ground being purchased up for larger corporate operations. It is kind of sad that our neighbors are leaving. Thank you for your comment and encouragement.
25:31 to 25:34 is a good shot of that nasty Wild Oats you were speaking of earlier. I have been enjoying your videos. After I retired off The Rail Road Track Department with 35 years of service. I ran grain cart for my nephew until health issues with my thyroid prevented it. They have my medication regulated now I'm doing much better hope to get back to helping with Harvest again.
Your optics are great and you really work the camera just like we are actually there. Based on other videos I’ve seen, that is not easy to do. I can almost smell the wheat and dust! I also noticed you seem less comfortable up high on the grain bins. I am allergic to heights too!
Great video!😃 Is a joy to watch, your great grandfather, was it him that emigrated to America?🙂 And one more question..😅 Why put in the grain in rows? Does it provide better grain quality and is drier?🙂 Again a great video a pleasure to see, your grandfather is a bit shy in front of the camera!😃 Grettings from Denmark 🇩🇰

Nice video Kate! You may be able to tilt the steering wheel down and hold it steady with your knees while having a drink... it works for me! Very heavy windrows!! 😀
Thank you for your kindness and great suggestion!
Oh my that is really interesting about the Laverda harvesters. What color are they? Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement.
Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion Hi Kate Laverda combines are red with a bit of white we also have a lot of Case Ih and a lot of John Deere like at home. thank you for your answer and take good care of yourself 🙋♂️Dave
That is really neat to learn. Thank you so much.
Although I’ve never been a farmer I’ve always been Intrigued by farming and even have an X-Box game of farming. I’d love an opportunity to run n some of the equipment one day. I think it would be an awesome experience.
Thank you for your great story!
Thank you for your great questions.
cool. good work
Thank you for your wonderful kindness!!!
I notice that your great grandparents and the walkers family were homesteading at the same time. Beautiful country.
Thank you so much for your comment.
Mr. Johnston, thank you, that is really interesting.
@BWM, thank you. Very interesting story too. There used to be a lot of dairies around here but they are almost all gone now.
We are seeing a lot of farm ground being purchased up for larger corporate operations. It is kind of sad that our neighbors are leaving. Thank you for your comment and encouragement.
You’re amazing 🥰 🌾 🌾 🌻 🌻 🚜
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Hi Kate great video. came across your videos about a week ago and hope you and your family have a great harvest.
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Thank you so much for all your kindness and encouragement. I sure hope you get back to farming soon. Very best wishes and thank you again.
Your optics are great and you really work the camera just like we are actually there. Based on other videos I’ve seen, that is not easy to do. I can almost smell the wheat and dust! I also noticed you seem less comfortable up high on the grain bins. I am allergic to heights too!
I really appreciate your kind words and encouragement. The grain bins are a little high. lol . Thank you so much.
Great video!😃 Is a joy to watch, your great grandfather, was it him that emigrated to America?🙂 And one more question..😅 Why put in the grain in rows? Does it provide better grain quality and is drier?🙂
Again a great video a pleasure to see, your grandfather is a bit shy in front of the camera!😃
Grettings from Denmark 🇩🇰
Thank you so much and hello from Montana. That was my Grandfather in the video, he is 93. My Great Grandfather immigrated from Denmark and homesteaded our farm in 1912.
Oh please show the schoolhouse and the farm.I love History.
Thank you for the great suggestion. I will have to get some close up video of the old school house. My Grandma went to school there.
Hello Kate and Big Sky Country, golden grain fields forever and John Deere combines. Hi to Grandpa please ask him to tell of the farming past. Take care and thank you for your videos!
Thank you so much for your kind words and excellent suggestion. I will have to see if Grandpa could share some farming stories.
I would like to go work with you in Montana. I like agriculture and also learn to drive combines.
