People don’t realize the modernization that China has gone through even in young peoples lifetimes. My ex was from China and came to the US when she was 10 (2008). Her city she was from had dirt roads and little infrastructure (she compared it to a old west ghost town we visited once) she went back to her city to visit in 2017 and all the roads were paved and it had better modernization and infrastructure than most US cites. That kind of change in peoples lives is going to buy a lot of loyalty from the citizens. When you went from dirt roads and sewage in the streets to a standard of living equal to and sometimes better than first world countries you’re probably going to not feel like not criticizing the government is a hugely negative trade off.

Even if we stopped funding new operations today, it would take decades for any country to catch up. As for the OP vid: I never said America wasn't. The problem with it is bringing up all these stats and not addressing the fact that we spend way too much on our military (he does the opposite in fact and thinks it's a good thing when the whole vid is about how it would be impossible for anyone to invade). He then disregards how our economic system contributes to the US having one of the largest wealth gaps in any developed nation. Look, this territorial dispute has been going on for decades. I remember Fidel Ramos saber-rattling against the Chinese, and he served his 6-year term during the 90's.
I think the harsh reality is that China is extremely content with either bullying their neighbors, or as in the case of the Philippines, getting a president elected who favors trade with them over the Western powers. Under Duterte, we went from saber-rattling against China's rampant building of bases in the South China Sea to opening our gates to massive amounts of Chinese labor and cheap goods from the Alibaba-owned online store, Lazada.
Our national Sinophobia also morphed from perpetual fear of getting bombed during Noynoy Aquino's term, to getting pissed that the Chinese are taking all our good tech jobs under Duterte.

I wish Hasan's commentary on anything China related was better. He usually substantiates his points, but whenever it is about something bad China does it's just "the US does it too!", strawmen and a bunch of sarcastic comments. Like these things are bad, Hasan correctly criticizes the US for doing it, but when China does it it's just these repeated comments over and over again. I would get if he did this as a realist, where a realist would believe that China needs to alleviate it's insecurities about the US in order to achieve longer lasting peace, therefor defending Chinese imperialism in this regard would be a good thing. But he isn't, I am pretty sure(?)

Bear in mind, we are talking about the US which has been protecting trade routes to protect its own interests for a while now with their big navy. They don't really have a naval rival yet, or any military rival as of yet (China is still getting there obvs but still has not many international military bases).

As landing on Taiwan is outrageously difficult, due to its coast being mostly mountains and it's beaches being heavily fortified.
In WW2, it was estimated by a US general that to take the island of Taiwan from the Japanese, who were defending it with 50000 troops, they would need a land invasion force of nearly 200000 troops, and he expected that most of the 200000 would die. its east coast is mountainous, the west coast is not. and it's definitely not heavily forfitied, taiwan hasn't been taking their own defense seriously enough for that.

Free speech in china give people a right to take on issues in a right and consractive ways ( like as demostrations or reclamating the corrupt official or have an openion in social media and address it to a right person, not to blaim the whole sociaty and country or whole goverment, and not try to break the harmonius of sociaty like in american where people can tell lies about the other side and cause shooting, distruptions, riots etc.). Not like in the west, in china duty come first before freedom. Thats why u are bound to take the consiqueces that u had made either fysically or semantically.
