The reason why Dante can cross into the world of the dead is that it was believed that the Xoloescuincles (This is Dante's breed) were the spiritual guides of the deceased and took them to Mictlan, which is the name of the world of the dead in Mexico and also in our culture, we do not see death as something bad and that is why we have el Dia de los Muertos to remember our loved ones.
ANDDDD Also, the reasons of the color of the spirit guides, its a way to represent them, and we call them Alebrijes, and i think thats all(?

This movie is very special to me. It came out in theaters when my Mom was going through chemo so I didn’t want to really endure a movie about the dead while my mom was going through that. Xoloizcuintles are dogs who "help people go to the other side" and they were (sadly) buried alive with the dead in prehispanic times. That’s why Dante can just come and go. Also I think a lot of Mexicans just think babies and dogs can see "things that are not from this world" but not from any particular culture, more of a general thing.

What I love about Coco is that Pixar wasn’t afraid on doing the whole “it’s only adults who died” because celebrating Day of the Dead there are two versions. To celebrate the sad death of a adult(s) or death of a child(s). Sometimes it’s both.
For adults we put up an alter that contains a picture, but also drinks they may have liked (alcohol most of the time) and food of course.
While for a child we put up toys such as a small toy train or stuffed animals. Along with food they liked of course.
No matter what, a good percentage of the time no one cries because we believe they are there with us at that very moment. And that they are in a better place.

It sounds stupid but the closest I've got is picturing my dad's force ghost at the cinema with me watching the latest Star Wars movie, a franchise we both love(d). It was our thing as a dad daughter duo. I feel like the ability to blur the lines between the world of living and dead is such fundamental human wish. If you want another movie to hit you in the feels, I HIGHLY recommend Jojo Rabbit. It’s not Pixar, but it’s in my top 5 favorite movies.

It's a small touch I love, Miguel watches other people play and looks so genuinely enchanted by the performer. (Like when Hector is singing for his friend that one last time.)
My brother (who also plays guitar) has similar awe with other guitarists. It makes me happy to see how the animators captured that with Miguel.

Instant Classic movie! As a dad who has lost all of my grandparents now, I couldn’t help but tear up at the end at the theater. Even now, it is hard to watch the end without finding some happy tears.
Saw you reacting to Dune a while ago, and am wondering if you were going to watch/react to Andor? Also Rogue One if you have not yet watched it. 2 of the better character developing, grounded, and emotional Star Wars productions today, with a fantastic director who worked on both. Good storytelling and compelling characters really makes for good reaction videos!

i watched this movie for the first time while my grandfather was in his deathbed (he lived for another 4 months but he was already in the last stage of alzheimers so he wasn't really living) and then the same day he passed away and it completely destroyed me the way coco resembles him so much not only in appearance but also in her sweetness, and obviously her illness. i cannot help but cry everytime she appears on tv but at the same i love watching coco because even though im from argentina and we don't have this in our culture, i like to believe that it is true and that he'll never be truly away because i make sure other people hear about him

My dad is half Mexican and got adopted out so he's actually country af. But this movie has honestly been my favorite because I love the idea that we have to keep the idea of our past loved ones alive to keep them going. I never met my grandpa and I miss my uncle David to death so this movie always reminds me to keep them in my heart. Another crazy thing was that music was important in both of those families so it all hits deep in this movie.

Coco was the first movie I went to where i was the only one in my family in the theater cus they wanted to watch a different movie so I watched it all on my lonesome, completely taking it in and not worrying what they were thinking. It was probably the most I’ve cried during a movie up until that point, completely feeling my emotions and being in the moment. It will always be special to me for that reason

I'm glad you enjoyed this Jess. Though this makes me wonder if you have seen this other musical animated movie Vivo that came out last year. All I'll say about is that it's by Sony Pictures Animation, and that it features Lin Manuel Miranda. That movie will also make you a mess. It's so beautiful just like Coco. If you watched it then I hope you agree. If you haven't, then I definitely would recommend it.

One of the little details that gets me is that Hector is barefoot throughout the whole movie while he's estranged from his family. But then at the end when they've worked everything out and he's crossing over with them for the first time...he has shoes. They made him shoes. Wonderful reaction!

A fun fact that I learned: The creator of Coco said that even though Miguel and Ernesto weren’t blood related Ernesto’s Blessing still would have been able to send Miguel home because they both did genuinely believe they were family.
Ernesto was even very protective of Miguel, holding him back when Hector was yelling at both of them, showing us that he really did genuinely care about Miguel. But when Miguel figured out that he poisoned Hector, the little spark of genuine care for someone other then himself, came to a crashing halt.
So yeah, if Hector hadn’t interrupted the moment Ernesto’s Blessing really would have been enough to send Miguel home.
