Fun Fact: On the first day of filming, Meryl Streep said to Anne Hathaway, "I think you're perfect for the role. I'm so happy we're going to be working together. That's the last nice thing I'll say to you."
That reminds me of a story I heard about filming Harry Potter. Apparently Alan Rickman was so convincing as Snape that some of the kid actors were genuinely afraid to talk to him, so to make up for it he was super nice off camera.
No matter how horrible everyone in that office was to her, I still hate the boyfriend character more than any of them. I think because the movie itself doesn't seem to notice what a jerk he is.
Exactly, he clearly does not have her best interests at heart. I guess he's concerned about what the job is doing to her, but he can only express that concern by taking it out on her.
He acts like she’s literally selling her soul or something 😂 bro, no, it’s called learning to love your job to get through it. Shouldn’t he be happy that she’s not miserable? That she’s thriving and moving up in the world? Also…tbh, when Andy left the party and the opportunity to network with a successful journalist so she could make it to Nate’s birthday…if I were him, I’d say “forget the party, we can celebrate some other time! Go take the networking opportunity in the field you love!”
“Coat! STEAK? WHERE'S MY STEAK? Get me Armani. On the phone. Where's Armani? He's on the phone. Too slow. You are not going to Paris. I'm so much better than you are…. Meryl Streep is the bad guy. Never see it coming. Anyways, if I was mean in any way to you, I am sorry.” - Michael Scott, “The Office”
Despite Miranda being a literal monster boss she actually helped Andy became one of the best employees ever. She was even shocked herself at how she can do it, this is why I like the terror teacher or strict teachers at my school. They push to be better and I know it's not for everyone but I dunno, they're great on their own way especially for a slacker who wants to get his life together. That got real. XD
Love the movie, but the bf and friends are TRASH. "you turned you back on your friends for shoes and clothes" having a busy work schedule does not equal betrayal, in fact she turned down networking with someone in her actual dream career to go be with the bf AND she shared the perks with them. Like come on now yall know these bills need to get paid somehow
Nah FR they’re happy to take her handouts while tossing her phone around AND moralizing to her about her job 🤨 as if they don’t also hate their jobs?? Also why did the fashion-expert friend never stand up for her?? He knew how big a deal this was!
The false equivalency of Miranda comparing her scheming and stabbing Nigel in the back after years of loyal service to Runway and Andi caving to blackmail in a split second decision in the face of torpedoed career prospects angers me. The power dynamics and intent are completely different and she should know it. Tbh if Miranda is so awful to others, creating a toxic work environment where she's the imperious queen of her own little world and throwing away months of other people's time and hard work on an artistic whim maybe she should step away. Maybe then her kids could actually watch her kids grow up. No matter how talented or successful you are you don't deserve respect if you withhold it and basic decency from others.
THIS. Miranda is such a hypocrite and I hate that so many people fawn over her and act like she's some sort of queen or that how she treats people is somehow okay. Nah, she's a bitch that doesn't hesitate to step on other people and creates a toxic work environment. She's just as bad, if not worse, in the book imo.
Yeah that's what I thought! Like maybe her getting replaced isn't a bad thing, and she can spend more with her kids and maybe rekindle things with her ex-husband

Such a fun movie! The casting director really nailed it for this one. Everyone is just perfect in their role. I can't believe you've never seen this before, Jess. I guess you were a bit young when it first released, but glad you finally got around to it. And, more sing along, please! You are absolutely delightful!
yes! the casting director definitely knocked it out of the park! and yeah, it came out when i was a kid & i'm sure my mom took one look at the title & immediately said no 😂 oh well, i'm catching up on all these films now 😂
I saw an interview Stanley Tucci gave after this film came out where he spoke to fashion industry insiders and they said to him "We love your portrayal, our one criticism; your character was too nice." And is it just me or did you pronounce his name as "Stan Lee" a couple of times? 😄
idk if someone already said this, but the reason why all the clothes in the runway closet won't fit a size 6 is that almost all clothes designed for the runway are cut for the same measurements to fit relatively any model, at least at this time. Some brands are working towards more diverse sizing, but that is still coming from a system that maximises the efficiency of sample collection production.
I watched this movie a lot growing up and was too embarrassed to admit it. I'm glad it's had a resurgence over the last few years cause now I feel comfortable saying it's one of my favourite movies without an ounce of shame.
I hate the boyfriend and I hate that she gave up her job for him. Otherwise it's a great movie. Meryl Streep is amazing in literally every role she does.
This is one of my favorite movies, as a writer, because it's practically a masterclass in knowing when to be subtle and when *not* to be. I mean, come on, Miranda needs to get home on the same night Andy is having dinner with her dad, and there's a *hurricane*? And it still works, somehow. Plus, the two "music video" montages, for KT Tunstall and Madonna, are just so well done.
jess, i hope you’re ok! i don’t know where in florida you live, but if you were in the path of hurricane ian, i’m keeping you and your family in my prayers! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I got into fashion school after watching this movie over a decade ago... Now I work in fashion here in Brazil and let me tell u... It's EXACTLY like that times 10. It's a very toxic world and not as glamourous as it looks like. U need 2 b tough to survive.
Imho almost every character in this movie is an a-hole. I hate how manipulative her boyfriend is, the toxic workplace (with exception of Nigel) and don't forget Simon's character. There is some truth about the sizes. I still own a blouse from the 80 that is a size 38 (German) Now I wear 44 but the blouse from the 80s still fits. Once I went shopping for some t-shirts and I pulled of a XXL from the stand, but the colour was not what I was looking for so I grabbed one in a different colour unfortunately it was an XS, but something was not adding up so i took the XXL and put the XS on top of it. Do you know what the only difference was? The XXL was probably 2cm wider than the XS but around 20cm longer. So they call a shirt the size of an XS an XXL just because it is longer and people laugh when we women get frustrated with clothing sizes.
I'm not sorry to say this: Nate is the one true villain of this whole movie. He's a menace to society, put this man away and lock away the keys. Gaslight, manipulating, calculated sicko.
Ok so we definitely need you to start a reaction series to early 2000s romcoms now because this reaction was too good! I can recommend What a Girl Wants, I feel like it’s one you would love!
Great reaction as always Jess, The Devil Wears Prada is one of those movies I didn't know I would love as much as I did. It just came on TV one fine day and I watched it for Anne Hathaway but came out of it being in love. So references to the movie in a show like The Office really warms my heart. Hope you have a happy weekend as a reward for blessing our feed like you always do
Haha - I remember when I first saw this movie I hadn't heard of Emily Blunt before. I thought for sure her character had adopted a fake British accent to appear sophisticated and at the end of the movie it would be revealed that she actually had some common American accent (Long Island maybe?). I kept waiting for that reveal...and waiting...and waiting...
Your timing is weirdly impeccable, Darling. I'm gearing up for a table read of the script to this next week. [pushes play on Twilight Zone theme] Anyway, I always *love* the 'cerulean' scene, not just for Meryl's incredible delivery of a pretty meaty speech, but she uses the word "tragic" about the bargain bin. Tragic. Not trashy, not anything that bashes poors for not having the funds for fashion. She legit considers it tragic that some people don't have the access she does to this world, which she loves for as much as it sucks out of you. Meanwhile, one of the scenes I loathe is when Andy shows up and gives her friends all those goodies, literally thousands of dollars worth of swag - and they pay her back by playing keep-away with her phone and risking her job... and therefore further access to the incredible stuff she just gave them. Then again, very few characters in this come out well. Miranda is an icon but that's a double-edged sword, and she only seems to have a human emotion for her children and the magazine. Christian's a liar, Nate's a dick, Emily only heel turns at the end, I don't like *any* of Andy's friend group, and the entire structure of the high fashion world (really any exploitative global industry) is full of toxicity, stress, backstabbing, etc. Nigel is maybe the best character, but he's well on the way to a bitter jaded existence, and he gets screwed more than he should.
You learn something valuable, if your smart, from every job and every boss, no matter how horrible they are. Some bosses ask you for the sun, moon and the stars and even when you give it to them always want more and are never satisfied. They will wear you out! Don’t get mad, learn and leave on your own terms. One thing you gain from a bad boss is confidence. You should also know how to “manage” your boss, most especially a bad one. Having a friend you can confide in helps with the stress.
Honestly? Yes the work culture there was toxic but the critics that she recived, not about her body, about her aproach to the job and her not taken it seriously at the beginning was fair, she went to work for a magazine from the fashion industry openly admitting she didn't even know about it or who the boss was, she wasn't even trying to dress or be good at her job, a job in which if she failed Emily's head was going to roll too, she was made aware of this from the beginning. But the real villains were her friends and specially the boyfriend, not in a million years would i put my friends job at risk even when they complain daily about it like they did, taking the perks of her job but giving her grief about it. And Nate? A chef complaining about the crazy hours she did at her job? Really? And the birthday wasn't that serious,i rather her taking the chance to advance in her career, the one she actually wanted, than her coming to a party that could have been organized any other day. But then when his career goes up at the end that it's going to be even more demanding then it's ok, please
In the late 90s I worked in a hospital in Education. The woman I reported to and the young woman I shared an office with were both fashionistas, stick thin, who body shamed me for being a size 6 and not a fashionista. Our jobs had nothing to do with fashion. But, yeah. Looking back, those were brutal body-shaming days. I gained weight over the years and find it so difficult to imagine anyone being ashamed while being a size 6. I'm in my 50s now & so glad I waited til this year to watch this movie. As a younger woman I would've gotten hung up on the wrong things in this, rather than enjoying the heck out of it like I can now.
Anne Hathaway said in an interview that on the first day of shooting, Meryl Streep walked up to her and said :"I think you are gorgeous and I think you are fabulous but that's the only nice thing I will say to you". Meryl kept her word and stayed true to her character even offset
This type of movie really isn't my thing at all, but I have a soft spot for it because they showed it to us for a business class in high school. Also, you would look amazing with bangs.
I remember getting my boyfriend to watch this for the first time and he kept calling Christian a shark and kept bring up how he was gonna hold the manuscript over Andy's head. He'd get so weirded out every time Christian would show up on screen
Both GOATS the Tucci and MERYL make this movie great and yes, early 2000's media had some questionable opinions. That man is a wizard (the Harry Potter plot is a hint! I AM SURE OF IT!)
Oh wow I haven't thought about this movie in AGES! Regarding what you said about being glad to not have watched this when you were younger - absolutely there with you, it did not do me good. But it's still such a fun watch, let's be honest. Glad you had fun!
I love this movie! My mom and I have been watching it since I was a kid. Every time I watch it, I just want to be Andy. Which isn’t the point of the movie, but oh well
The comments about simon baker being magical made me realise, that i would have absolutely love him in the role as grindelwald, tho i love both johnny depp and mads mikkelsen in the role. anyways, i hate that she got back to her toxic boyfriend in the end and it was portrayed like she did everything wrong. it was her carreer, it wasnt her job that she was heavily exploited.
I hope it's apparent that the movie's POV is that size 6 is NOT "big". It was depicting those opinions as the reality of the industry, but it was not agreeing with them. Having said that, her friends were horrible as well. It's possible to disagree with someone without treating them like scum and tearing them down.
On your own (when you get a chance), check out the 2009 documentary ''The September Issue''. It follows Anna Wintour and the staff of Vogue on how an issue is put together. Even though everyone worships Anna and even treats her like a deity, her own daughter thinks the fashion industry is silly.
: ) Thank you for sharing your reaction to this film. Oof it was to bad they were so mean, no doubt it's an interesting and tough industry I'm glad at least there are documentaries to show the talented and definitely nice folk in the industry.. though yeah not every industry is perfect and life is definitely not black and white. I actually forgot it was a rom com and the actor Simon Baker (the very networked fellow) was in it. Anyhoo thanks again for watching and sharing your reaction.
You are right about that! Christian is not human, he seem to be a Maniac Pixie dream guy or sort, to teach Andy a lesson I guess. So she could detach from The fashion world.
21:41 Live your truth and be you. I have always liked the song Whitelijah Falls by Theodore Shapiro. Watching the movie now the nostalgic of the cellphone ringing that she throws in the fountain.
The model industry can be quite toxic, especially with magazines, because people don’t really look like that, and it can really affect peoples mental health, personally I think that even an eight or a 10 can be considered small, I myself went from a 12 to attend just by exercising, more, eating better, and moving to a new location that helped with my mental health, there can be so many contributing factors to a persons physical appearance, but as long as you’re doing everything to stay healthy, then you’re clothes size shouldn’t matter. It’s just unfortunate the way that media and especially magazines portray beauty.
Since you liked this, the writer of TDWP also wrote a movie called Morning Glory which has Rachel McAdams taking over a morning news show with grumpy Harrison Ford. Same vibes, very wholesome.
Loved the reaction, such a great movie! If you haven't yet, watch (at least) the pilot of 'The Mentalist' (maybe react to it, haha), it stars Simon Baker who plays Christian. It's kinda my guilty pleasure show, lol.
The boyfriend being a chef and still not understanding hard work, long hours, dedication and asshat bosses is baffling. The boyfriend is a complete tool and the gallerist "friend" is horrible. The suit-friend is decent but should be telling his other friends to be nice. Christian Thompson I could actually see her getting together with at some point later. He's presented in the end as if "oh he was a douche all a long" to make the boyfriend look less shitty but actually he has no prior committment to Miranda, would probably have helped out Andie anyway so all he really did was prematurely call her Baby without consent. Very minor. He does seem to actually like her, and as a person too, he's supportive of her writing carreer and procuring the seventh unpublished Harry Potter book is a Big favour. If sex was all he was after he didn't need to go to that big of an effort. He really wanted to help and impress her. He's also really cute in the way he introduces himself in the first scene, almost like he's shy and a bit awkward at first.
Suddenly I see is an iconic song for generations and for those kids it is a flashback to years ago. 2:54 Anne Hathaway has been in my childhood since Princess Diaries came out and only natural she was/is apart of my adulthood exploring romance as a 20+years old. And it’s thanks to the PD sequel that I feel in love with Chris Pine.❤
This is a toxic work environment (notoriously so, in fact), but she also showed up like she didn’t give a shit and was better than her potential co-workers. There is no industry job where you can show up like “I don’t care about any of this” and actually get hired. Capitalism sucks, bit you at least have to know how to play the game.
Fun Fact: On the first day of filming, Meryl Streep said to Anne Hathaway, "I think you're perfect for the role. I'm so happy we're going to be working together. That's the last nice thing I'll say to you."

It’s become a very popular opinion in recent years that the boyfriend is the real villain, not the boss.
I think a great in-spirit sequel to this movie is “The Intern”. Anne Hathaway learns her lessons here and starts a good company the right way

We love this movie. We love you had a great time!
I love this movie and your reaction!
ahh thanks for watching!! :)
@@fictionaldarling You're welcome!
no one 'asked' but we all NEEDED this.
12:34
"I put the *die* in diet" lol 🤣🤣
This type of movie really isn't my thing at all, but I have a soft spot for it because they showed it to us for a business class in high school. Also, you would look amazing with bangs.
This movie came out in 2006.
The opening song, "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall was released in 2005.
I remember getting my boyfriend to watch this for the first time and he kept calling Christian a shark and kept bring up how he was gonna hold the manuscript over Andy's head. He'd get so weirded out every time Christian would show up on screen
This was going to have a sequel, but so far, nothing has happened, and that's good thing as it's never intended to be a franchise.
Hey Jess I'm glad you're okay cause I saw on the news that Florida had huge storm . glad you're okay ♥️🇿🇦
i really appreciate that; thank you!! i'm safe & okay!!
@@fictionaldarling I'm happy to hear that ♥️💯♥️
I think i tricked myself into thinking you had already made this video, but neat to see it!
Yeees! Thank you. :) I loved your Scream reactions and am not into superhero movies, so finally something I can watch again from you, very nice. ;)
ahh i'm so glad you could watch!!! hopefully there will be some more non-superhero commentary soon ☺
Both GOATS the Tucci and MERYL make this movie great and yes, early 2000's media had some questionable opinions. That man is a wizard (the Harry Potter plot is a hint! I AM SURE OF IT!)
LOL yes!! the harry potter references were hinting at it for sure!! 😂
But the opinions about weight were presented as being toxic. At least that’s how I see it.
Love that you’re obsessed with Simon Baker, he was incredible in The Mentalist. He IS a God on earth. He is an incredible actor.
No matter how mean Miranda is I love her.
Which isn’t the point of the movie, but oh well
at least she ends up happy & in a job perfect for what she really wanted to do!!! nothing wrong with that ☺
The comments about simon baker being magical made me realise, that i would have absolutely love him in the role as grindelwald, tho i love both johnny depp and mads mikkelsen in the role.
anyways, i hate that she got back to her toxic boyfriend in the end and it was portrayed like she did everything wrong. it was her carreer, it wasnt her job that she was heavily exploited.
something happened to Dylan is in Trouble's reaction to this, but now we get yours woo!
you should check out BillyBinges's reaction to this too
I hope it's apparent that the movie's POV is that size 6 is NOT "big". It was depicting those opinions as the reality of the industry, but it was not agreeing with them. Having said that, her friends were horrible as well. It's possible to disagree with someone without treating them like scum and tearing them down.
I never get over it that Anne Hathaway and Jane (the mentalist) were together.....he belongs to Lisbon!
Happy Friday Jess!
Happy friday!! :)
If you have the blu-ray and want to die laughing, watch the outtakes of everyone falling off those high heels. LOL! And ouch.
Hey Jess, good reaction video. Hope you have a good weekend 🥰
ahh thanks; i hope you have a good weekend, too! :)
LOVVVVVED your reaction to this movie!!!!
maybe andy couldve had someone drive miranda out of the state away from the storm and then flown out to new york from there
The early 2000s, where anything above a zero was fat. I don't miss that at ALL.
On your own (when you get a chance), check out the 2009 documentary ''The September Issue''. It follows Anna Wintour and the staff of Vogue on how an issue is put together. Even though everyone worships Anna and even treats her like a deity, her own daughter thinks the fashion industry is silly.
i think this movie was what helped me realize i was bi and i watched it when i was like 8 or 10? so yeah, body shaming in this movie didn't help
Fact: Ana Wintour and Vogue banned the movie because the Merryl's character is a reference of her.
Miss MAAM, im glad youre finally getting round to it, but how hadn't you seen this ICONIQUE piece of art before now😱🤣
: ) Thank you for sharing your reaction to this film.
I read the book years ago and I’m pretty sure it was the fifth Harry Potter book.
The movie was made in 2006 so it would be the 7th book
You are right about that! Christian is not human, he seem to be a Maniac Pixie dream guy or sort, to teach Andy a lesson I guess. So she could detach from The fashion world.
this film is phenomenal; please react to sherlock series and the harry potter series if you haven't watched them yet.
21:41 Live your truth and be you. I have always liked the song Whitelijah Falls by Theodore Shapiro. Watching the movie now the nostalgic of the cellphone ringing that she throws in the fountain.
I love this movie cause we have all different perseption of it when I was on my twenties and different perseption to this movie when I was in my 30s
It's so important to get a female take on this movie and I love these reactions that could only be made by a woman. Spot on. Funny. She gets it.
This movie was literally in my film class in college for my masters. Literally. And also it's a movie that I feel that everyone can enjoy
"I put the die in diet" sent me 😂
My first time watching one of your videos, and you're hilarious! Much love.
miranda is based on the vogue editor call anna wintour
Since you liked this, the writer of TDWP also wrote a movie called Morning Glory which has Rachel McAdams taking over a morning news show with grumpy Harrison Ford. Same vibes, very wholesome.
such a cool video!! i love this movie! Meryl is amazing ❤
Ha! Best youtube content to watch after getting back from a wine tasting festival :D Love this movie!
ahh i hope you had fun at the festival!! that sounds awesome!
