  • The Ullswater Way is, depending on which options you take, a 20 - 22 mile long-distance walking route around Ullswater, a lake towards the north east of the English Lake District. The route can be done as one (extremely) long walk or, as Neil does here (and in Part Two -
    • Lake District Walks | ... ), in various parts.
In this film, Neil takes the Steamer from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding, before walking back along the eastern coast of the Lake, taking in Howtown and the Cockpit stone circle.
Check out the route here: explore.osmaps...
The fabulous Ullswater Steamers (www.ullswater-steamers.co.uk/) serve Pooley Bridge, Howtown, Glenridding and Aira Force, and provide convenient shortcuts to and from various legs of the walk.
The Ullswater Way was the product of a collaboration between The Lake District National Park Authority, the National Trust, Eden District Council, and Ullswater Steamers, and the path was officially inaugurated on April 25, 2016, with broadcaster and film-maker Eric Robson performing the opening honours.
While the concept of encircling the lake had been contemplated for quite some time, it was the 2015 Cumbria floods, which caused widespread devastation (including washing away the previous stone bridge at Pooley Bridge), that provided the impetus for the project's realisation.

The Friends of the Ullswater Way have more details, including downloadable maps and guides, on their website - www.ullswaterheritage.org/ullswater-way - and are also responsible for the artworks that make up the Heritage Trail along the route.
Neil uses the Ullswater Way Official Guide by Mark Richards: www.inspiredbylakeland.co.uk/collections/walking-guide-books/products/the-ullswater-way-official-guide
From Penrith train station the 508 Stagecoach bus runs regularly to Pooley Bridge and Glenridding.

The continuity of humour in these films is wonderful. I find myself childishly excited every time a road comes up, or the word path has to be said 😂❤
