I have commented on Unmeshes tutorials before and I have nothing but the highest respect for the man, his teaching techniques are first class no nonsense unnecessary jargon involved, clear precise instruction. Many other tutorials I have watched race ahead, assuming you already know a lot of what they are teaching you, so why do they think why you are watching it to be taught what?! Unmesh gives the fundamentals of being a great instructor: Explanation, Demonstration, You then imitate & practice. Simple.
If you're curious where these secret numbers come from, it's the NTSC luma coding standard. In a B&W television, the luma is calcualted as 0.299 * red + 0.587 * green + 0.114 * blue. These coefficients add up to 1.0 (100%). To map them to a value between 0 and 100, multiply by 100. You get Red = 29.9 = 30, Green = 58.7 = 59, Blue = 11.4 = 11. To get the complementary colors, subtract from 100. Cyan = 100 - Red = 70, Magenta = 100 - Green = 41, Yellow = 100 - Blue = 89. Red + Green + Blue must add up to 100, and Cyan + Magenta + Yellow = 200.
Unmesh, if there would be a King of RUclips tutorials, no doubt you would have been THE ONE for life! Man, I am sitting in a public place, PC on mute, and I still understand what you are showing there!! Absolute domination!
PIXimperfect, I love your channel! Your Photoshop tutorials have helped me take my art to the next level. You've inspired me to attend art school at the Art Institute of Las Vegas and start my own RUclips channel. Thank you so much for your time, help and community support!!! You truly rock brother!!! 👑 😎👍🏿
This is also an excellent tool for judging tones in a colour portrait. Add this layer on top of a photo and it is so much easier to check how your shadows and midtones compare. Put a simple curves layer underneath for corrections. Just watch out for oversaturating. I've been using this a lot lately. Thank you so much for posting this.
There's very few producers of Informative or Entertaining content here on RUclips that I will almost instantly click the link to watch. Unmesh and his PiXimperfect series is one of them. Great work and thank you for your thoughtful and helpful videos.
I have to say, you have the best tutorials on RUclips, regardless of the topic. I've been using photoshop for 15 years, but never really learned properly. I really enjoy how you effortlessly explain the "basics" like adjustment layers and masks. Dropping little nuggets of knowledge! :)
I’m a professional editor and never thought about trying to work this out but can already see myself using this truck in a few actions, great work and thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
I really really love the effort you put to teach us photoshop and your explanation is really clear and from easy to deep in to the theory and also make it not hard to understand. I am just so surprised that there are so many ppl asking lots of money for photography tutorials hich is not even covering 1%of what u put to RUclips just want to thank you again.
Impressed too much. I have searched for this numbers i mean true neutral values for black and white conversation. Finally satisfied with standard values from grayscale conversation. It was so simple to use difference for this search I almost embarrassed. Thank you very much i will not screen your numbers i ll prefer infer them myself thanks thanks a lot
In 9:07 I think you could also use a threshold adjustment layer instead of curves and adjust the slider to the extreme till you get pure white. Then as you adjust the B/W layer values, the threshold adjustment would help you see the perfect values because it would report what's pure black and what isn't; instead of simply eyeballing it. Impressive stuff. Mind. Blowing.
Huge thank you for this! I've been using ACR's luminosity adjustment to do this exact same luminosity adjustment because I couldn't figure out how to create a neutral starting point using the B/W adjustment layer.
Great tutorial on a process I used for many years! That is until the day a friend suggested I revisit the "Selective Color" adjustment layer. Yes, that layer that was once popular for making good photographs look ugly. You can still do that if you are into that fad, but I have found it now the more useful tool for color grading. A lot more finesse than my old trusty "Black & White" blended to "Luminosity." Give it a go, and see what you think!
You are an amazing teacher! Thank you for you and if you have a team, I would like to thank them also for sharing such valuable knowledge! Thanks for going in-depth on it!
Merci de vos explications biens utiles et de mieux comprendre le cheminement pour ne pas agir comme un âne en copiant simplement des chiffres. Merci beaucoup.
Why isn't this man Brand Ambassador of Adobe Photoshop yet?
It is good idea!
For me .....I AGREE!
agree🙋♂️
Proud Nepali I agree!
He should be since he's covering all the basics.

An improvement on Adobe's default - brilliant!
I love how you explain how things are working instead of only listing the steps. And you teach us how to solve problems, not just follow recipes.

Woaaaw, you are so generous. With that knowledge you can make your action and then sell it, instead you are giving it to us for free.
