This was my favourite game in the summer of 1980, playing every lunchtime while working on the Golden Mile selling Blackpool Rock age 16
I remember playing this in the local arcades after school, on my way home in the early 1980's. The sound effects brought it all back!!
Ain't It Funny how a melody can bring back a Memory?
I have the Dedicated cab for Galaga/Galaxian from Arcade 1up... Galaxian is definitely as good as Galaga in its own way.
Both games get heavy play... But the sound effects of Galaxian makes me run it a bit more than Galaga.
Right now I'm on the top in the house sitting at 12500
Omg that music jingle at the beginning , brings back so many memories
Totally jealous of you guys!!! Lol!! I love these old games so much, I can still sit and watch someone else play! Just like in arcade back in the day!!!
You're welcome to watch anytime you want Steve :) When I was a kid I used to watch everybody else play too, I hardly ever had any money!
In the summer of 1980 I was in a video game arcade in the US when suddenly my eyes fell upon a stunning Galaxian game. It was love at first sight. During the late 70s I had liked playing Space Invaders alright, but I knew right away I was going to like Galaxian better the minute I saw it. S Invaders had those 2 awkward buttons for moving left & right. Galax had the simple joy stick - much better for dodging. Also there is something great about how the Galax alien bugs move independently and some are more dangerous than others. The purple ones, for instance, in the original game could do more sudden sideways swooping into you, as compared to others. A very good player I knew in the early 80s gave me a tip that I should take out the purple ones whenever possible.
I have enjoyed Galaga also over the years, but for me it never had as much character, just didn't seem as interesting to me somehow as Galaxian (I've never played Super Galaxian).
After playing Galaxian awhile I can see how some people would enjoy it better than Galaga. There are subtle differences that depending on what you like would make it a better game. Either way they're both pretty damn fun!
@@LyonsArcade Agree that they are both damn fun :^) Thanks for this vid BTW. If I'm in your area sometime I'll stop by your store.
FIrst time I've heard of the 25" version! I own a 19" Galaxian. Great video. Thanks for sharing this rare piece of arcade history!
Thanks Mr. Delusional!
i am yes stupud!
I did not know they made a 25". Very Cool! I grew up playing Galaxian everywhere. I remember how Galaxian blew my mind in 1979. All those colors and such immersive sound! Once Awesome, Always Awesome. I also think its mega cool how the Yellow Galaxian showed up later in Galaga, Pac-man, Pac-man Plus and Super Pac-man. That Galaxian is mean as hell in Galaga. He will come right at you with a vengeance.
Supposedly they had those monitors left over from some other game so they shoehorned them in the first couple thousand cabinets... Back then, EVERYTHING was new, even 25" color monitors in arcade games :)
thanks for sharing this. That was the first Roomshipshooter game i have seen after pong in 1980. This time was so fascinated to me. Also I remember ,friends told me there is a
store for electronic an there you can shot roomships on a TV with a Remote control. I never forget this days.
Thank you for watching Electrodefender!
I love watching your videos. You alway give a little history of the game. Really enjoy your channel
Thank you Germy! We're glad you're here...
Loved Galaxian! Had a mini version back in the day. Very cool find!
I'd like to get a Mini in to film one day....
Another favourite of mine was Moon Cresta. It’s also got one of those startup tunes you remember forever.
I never get that one in, but it's a cool game!
Awesome looking classic game, I wish there was one available like this here in Spain. Never seen a 25" wow
There might be one there somewhere, look around!
I first played this around 1980 in Ibiza I was only about 7. Watched the waiters from the hotel playing it mostly. Been hooked ever since.
Wow..Great history them using the 25" monitors from Sea Wolf 2 ! So cool to see 25" inch in it! I saw a few of these BITD!
I'm going to do another video actually showing what the monitor looks like, it's a trip.
Joe's Classic Video Games Yea I remember it was a huge mess of convergence knobs for sure..The forunner of the newer 25" Ms.Pacman/Galaga Reunion games!
Thanks for making these videos . If I'm in your area I'll be sure to stop and check out what you have available.
Thank you Chuck, see you down the road!
Probably the most advanced game of the 70s. A true classic. Even though Galaga is better in basically every way, it's awesome to see where franchises begin.
We have an even better Galaxian video coming up Tuesday, check us out then, we play both games.
@@LyonsArcade Will make sure to check it out! Loved your videos on Tekken games and Virtua Fighter and Soul Edge etc.
Just out :)
25" would have been a monster back then!!!!!
I can remember the first time I saw a galaxian machine and remember thinking how amazing that attack pattern was!! HUGE jump from Space Invaders!
It was also one of the first games I got for the Commodore 64
I ended up missing all of the home system games from around that time that were so cool!
@@LyonsArcade the weird thing was most of those games weren't licensed from the arcade. So you would have some spotty 20 year doing pixel perfect conversion's in his bedroom and my guess is earning next to nothing for doing it
Nice cab! The PCB is definitely not original and is a hack of Galaxian. Not too sure, but I think it's Super Galaxian you have. Check it out in MAME. Neither of the two official versions play like this. I'm the Twin Galaxies World record holder on this, so I've seen enough of it to know the difference.
That sounds pretty definitive then :) It's an original pcb for sure, but it must be a rom hack of some sort. I just took a look at it, definitely original Midway pcb but the 5 roms on the daughter board appear to be reburnt, they don't have labels though. The two Proms at the bottom of the main board are still the original ones....
Yeah, a rom swap would probably return it to stock. You'll find it much more playable than the version from Hades you have. I'd struggle with this!
CharlieFar hey Charlie can u message me on fb same name
Galaxian came out in Japan in October, 1979, and it came out in the US two months later.
It was December 1979 when “Galaxian” was released in the arcades and it was made by Midway in the US, and it was developed by Namco. Midway did put out many of the Namco titles during the early 1980’s including the classic “Pac-Man”.
Even though that's not a very good picture, it's cool that it was made with a 25" monitor early on.
Whoa what difficulty are you on? I've never seen a boss fly down with like 4 or 5 escorts so quickly in level 1!
Other people have mentioned that this must be "Super Galaxian" which apparently was a rom swap.
Awesome
cool arcade gadaxien I love it :)
Yes it is very cool.
Fun Fact: in Galaxian, the yellow alien flagships are seen from the top. In GORF, the flagship boss is the profile view of those yellow alien ships.
Enjoyed your video. Great job as always. Ive heard of the 25 inch version but have never seen one. Thats a very cool piece of history! By the way that game isn't the standard Bally Midway ROM set. Something is very different with the ROMs or game board!
I think it just looks different because it's on freeplay... or did you notice something else different? It's the original Midway board but maybe the roms were swapped (or early versions).
I also own a Galaxian and the pattern the enemy uses is different on your game. On your version they drop and swoop faster. Also looks like one of the rows of ships are shaped differently The convey with the flag ship should be accompanied by 2 scouts and it looks like all of them come down on your version.
That's wild! I believe the ones with the big monitor were the first ones made, so maybe they changed the rom version later? Asteroids Deluxe was really hard, then they released an easier rom set for later.
I looked it up, apparently there's two romsets, this is the really hard version. They said the difference was that on the other romset, they fire pretty much straight down, but on this one the bullets go diagonal more often making it hard to get under them.
I'm wanting to put a TriSync 25" crt in one of my ragged out ms pacman cabinets. turn it into a dedicated vertical MAME cabinet
back in the Day Galaga was more user firendly but still tough
Yeah Galaga they smoothed it up a little bit, I can see how Galaxian has it's pluses though! Thanks for watching Simon!
WOW! Nice man!! :0
Thanks Bobby Jack!
Joe's Classic Video Games I was going to say maybe turn the blue drive down some, looks deep in the video
It doesn't look like that in person, it just didn't film very good.
Bobby Jack Yes to sure about that
This was MY game back in the day! I got really good at, and honestly I like it more than Galaga (still love Galaga)!!
Galaxian is currently 40 years old today!
Edit: there was a typo in the world galaxian
It's a great game, everybody forgot about it because of Galaga but Galaxian has it's own positives too....
Can you correct conversion with a combination of voltages, mechanical alignment of the yoke magnets (neck of tube) and software please? ....as this is very "blue"
andymouse123 I agree maybe it’s the camera but colors are way off
I have an original Galaga. Could a 25” monitor fit in a normal 19? Is just the bezel art different? I enjoy your videos.
It has different brackets I believe. So I don't think you could just slide it in there, the monitor in this one is this huge thing bolted to the side of the cabinet, lol.
Joe's Classic Video Games oh wow. I bet it’s heavy. One thing I do not miss moving crt TVs around the house anymore 😄
Hey when you start that up does it show that usual start up grid
I don't remember, unfortunately (or fortunately?) we sold it long ago.
Hey joe. I have a galaxian and the volume on the game is super low. Where is the volume control knob located ? I don’t see it on the board. Thank you
If you're looking at the board with the edge connector at the top, the volume knob is about the size of the quarter in the top right corner
I also have a Galaxian cabinet with 25" monitor. Unfortunately it is "Out of Order".. Any advice on how to work on one of these without electrocuting myself? Lol.
Check the voltages first and see if it's getting power, it might have blown a fuse... usually if it does though something's shorted.
Wow, is this game on hard mode? I've never seen such big groups of enemies in a formation like that!
I could score around 30000. Watched someone play once and he was on 150000 with around 6 lives remaining and were they swarming down. After a while I left him to it but I'm sure he could have gone on forever.
Very cool. I'll keep practicing :)
What version of the game's code was this? I've been looking for this version for a while, and could never find it again.
I've had people tell me that apparently this is "Super Galaxian" ...
Galaxian is the first video game I ever played. I'm better at Galaga but the memories...
It's under rated because Galaga most people assume is better, and it may be... but Galaxian has it's own charm!
The first Galaga game.
Yup, it's pretty awesome!
I can hold my on in Galaga but not Galaxain. I think yours is set on a difficult level? That thing needs a rapid 🔥 mod 😁
Apparently there's two romsets, and this is the super tough version, lol.
Joe's Classic Video Games Yes the hard version for sure!
Now I feel better that my score wasn't very good, lol
Ahh, Galaxian. The game that created everyone’s least favorite Pac-Man bonus fruit in Smash Bros (besides the bell from Mappy)
Good morning, I would like to know if you have a Galaxian control panel ?
We just sold one last week, crazy timing. Had it for years!
sh*t !, my french galaxian was sad xD
Que preciosidad de maquina que gran juego cuántos recuerdos.
Electrohome G02 manual, purity and convergence procedure can be seen here www.arcade-museum.com/manuals/manuals_monitors.php "Electrohome G02 issue , yes its a ton of fun with lots of sarcasm
I should have clarified... this is AFTER I converged it following the manual.
Ok sorry
lol that was the closest I could get it!
Muito bom
Thank you friend :)
Is The Joystick 2 Way, Or 4 Way?
It's 2 way!
Nice video - but just to say, this is a modified original Galaxian. You can tell this as the top row takes off to attack you. In the original, the yellow has only two red ones (max) attacking you.
Umk
galaxian is release in 1979 by namco and listed too midmay in 1980
Nathan Williams hahaha suckers !
It was December 1979 in the US, and it was first released in October 1979 in Japan.
@@Musicradio77Network excellent
@@tomypower4898 I am not that stupid
Missing the RED and PURPLE color ships?
4:48
More like:
SUPER GALAXIAN!
galaxian did come out in 1979
This version is harshly modified compared to the original version!!!
I liked this one better than Galaga....I was better at this one, lol. Love these games! I have an upright Tempest, thats it. They are heavy beast's, and take up alot of room.
You must be on a hard setting for the game. he Boss Galaxians never go down like that so quickly, and they all sway a lot and very violently.
I made that ship with lego
Very cool Zaidy!
Want
LOL it's pretty cool.
released in: 1979
Feburary 1980 in the US according to the manual
Actually Oct 79 Japan two months later in US!
Galaga was more exciting and faster paced but Galaxian required a bit more skill (and patience) to get the high scores due you only having one bullet on screen at a time. You couldn't just spam shots and hope you hit something like in Galaga. Every shot feels more important in Galaxian.
LOL, definitely NOT an original Galaxian.
And why do you think that?
