There is an interesting article on Kodak's website on the production and cinematography on the movie The Lighthouse. It was shot entirely on Eastman Double-X 5222 with a custom cyan filter, emulating the orthochromatic look which caused the sky to blow out and the wrinkles in the actors faces to darken. Great video btw 🙂
A little panchromatic during this pandemic. The root "pan" means all, so all colors of the visible spectrum, and a disease that had spread to all populations
for everyone interested in orthocromatic film and hasnt heared the news yet: they recently made a movie on bw 35mm orthocromatic film called "the lighthouse" ... the look ist incredible
It wasn't made on orthochromatic film, it was shot on double-x which is pancromatic. They used a special color filter to achieve the orthochromatic look
Your videos always make me smile. That seems simple and cliche, but I mean it. There's always some point in your videos where I find myself grinning at the screen, and this time it was tossing the can of Coors. Stay sane out there.
Hey Jason, nice video as usual! Also, my 6x7 has the same issue where it wants to cut off the last frame. The trick is to load the start line a bit early, like have the start arrow maybe an inch before the dot (might need some trial and error to get it perfect)
Pancro 400 is not available in South Africa 🇿🇦 I waited over a year to get from B&H, and eventually found some at Fotoimpex, Berlin. Apparently stocks were low globally in 2018/9. Glad to see you shot some.
another masterpiece of a video. your deadpan delivery is so great, 7:00 had me rollin. thanks for giving us something to laugh about during this time. cheers and be safe. give Baxter pets for me plz.
Totally agree with the peel apart end of film! So much nicer than the licky thing... Too bad Fuji removed it from the Acros 100 II! Oh, and that Bergger is totally a film to try ;-) Thank you!
my 6x7 has had the same spacing issues, turns out that it was my fault, i pushed the advance lever too fast, you're supposed to cock the advance lever slow and steady, thats what did the trick for me, the spacing is now even between the shots 🤗
The thing I love most about black and white film is that almost every one on the market has the same 2 lines (or variants of them) for describing the images: "Very fine grain" and "wide latitude". Seriously, almost everything on the market says something like that. haha
Looks like a fun trip! I'd have been scared resting my camera on the cliff edge though. I am so clumbsy, I'd be sure to kncok it off like a fool! I used BP once, 2 rolls in 120. Results were OK; a bif flat for my liking even at EI800, but the dam film rolls up like a curly whirly making it so fiddly to scan. So I've not used it since. I wasn't sufficiently blown away by the look to work hard on the scanning so I have not used it again.
"151 and play with fireworks", that made me laugh. I haven't heard of 151 since the 1970's and my R&R trip from Vieques to the Bacardi factory in Puerto Rico.
I was shooting this 20 years ago, before they went under. It was repackaged Fomapan at a higher price. Already had Fomapan and Arista-branded Fomapan, didn’t need a 3rd.
I own the 90mm lens. I was told in an earlier video not to talk to you if I don’t own the 105... here I am dog. In all seriousness- thanks for showing this stock, been wanting to try it. Peace from Bakersfield
Grainydays, grannydays...I too tried Bergger Pancro, and sort of like it. My impression is it is not as sharp as I prefer. So I've shot my first roll of Rollei RPX 400. The Rollei has very broad mid-tones and is not as grainy as the Bergger, and is sharper. I would not buy Bergger again, Rollei RPX is a buy again - it is said to be good in harsh light.
Maybe a stop under and a red filter. I usually shoot Tri-X very contrasty but maybe I’ll grab a few rolls of this to mix things up. Got nothing but time these dayzzz.
It was good to see how the Bergger film actually renders without throwing my own money at it to test. I am not sure about this super flat look. Some of the shots have no contrast at all, as if the developer was faulty or exhausted. It would be great to see a follow up video with a +2 push and see if that helps, as you said. Out of the box it looks disappointing to me. HP5+ is a safe bet even though it too renders somewhat flat. ADDENDUM: Just saw this film reviewed on Analog Insights' channel and their images look luscious from this same film. Perhaps something went wrong with the exposures or developing in your tests. Can't write it off as a bad film yet if it is user error. Maybe you need to test and review it again It would be nice to see a review of the Ultrafine Xtreme films on your channel. Both the 100 and the 400 ISO versions.
If I used Bergger and got the flat images he did, I wouldn't use it either. Bergger seems to demand more development and fixing than most films to yield a normal tonal range. I'm not sure it offers anything worth the trouble to determine its special needs. When first introduced, it was quite expensive, but now it seems to be priced on a par with similar Ilford products.
New to your channel...enjoyed the banter parts. I dont know if u find this film tends to curl quite a bit when drying (not as bad as acros) which makes for difficultly in scanning..that is why I stick to Ilford HP5 or even Ultrafine 400. Pancro 400 is great in 4x5 processed in PMK Pyro, try that combo and u may become a Pyro-maniac. It is sad that Bergger stopped their 200 film which I only was able to shot a box before they stopped... but wonderful. Good Luck and keep the faith
In the trivia department, let me note that the slack method he uses to load his Pentax 67 guaranties that one day his is going to jam a roll of film in the camera at around frame 7. If he gets excited and tries to force the film through, then he will be get the bonus of a stripped advance gear. All of this is covered on one page of the manual, but in the YT age, if it ain't in a RUclips video, it's not important, right? So, load the film spool and take up spool and connect the leader to the take-up. Then put your picky on the film spool to restrain the film spool as you start advancing the leader up to where you close the camera back. This gives a tight wrap to the leader and keeps the whole roll tight as it advances.

Genuinely the most therapeutic channel on youtube.

Awesome as always.
Grainydays = Cutest thing on RUclips.
Love your videos. You have all the enthusiasm of a New Jersey construction foreman. That means a lot to me.

that final motion/sequence/thingy - damn!
Pancro sounds like an old medicine for the pancreas lol, but I dig it!
panchromatic...
The shot with guys on the ridge....primo!

Pancro400 is currently my fav b&w film
Been looking forward to some more uploads from you! Your humour fits so well in these bleak times. Hope you're staying safe and shooting lots!
Unexpected fat mom joke made me lol. Thank you for your service.
"The Desert Hipsters" I see a movie in the future.

The Iceland video is single handily getting me though what is bound to be a 4 month quarantine, thank you.
Nice shots. I might try that film. I’ve only shot black and white once using ILFORD HP5 and loved it. Also, sweet hazmat suit lol.
*holy shit*
That campsite was unreal
Love the photos of the hikers on the ridge. Reminds me of the Badlands in SD.
Absolutely wonderful images. What a great trip.
Thanks for squeezing out one last grainy days before we all f'n die. It's what the world needs in these dark times
Jason the only thing keeping us sane in quarantine
Dude ( Man crush Much ) !!! Great job !!
I'm liking these shots. Just wow.
Fantastic. Came for the photography, stayed for your joie de vivre 🙂
such beautiful B&W film! Thank you for this review, I'm sold to try this one out.
I had two videos to watch, this one and the newest one by Willem. Came her for the shitty content that I never know why it makes me happy honestly.

Jason saving me from my quarantine boredom.
The legend's back
I'm upset there wasn't a Breaking Bad reference with that suit on. Hah. Great video!
Am I right that we need a tutorial on how he did the zoom on the final shot?
that effect at the end thought :O
Mathis pyt insane!
00:01 how can you start us off with such a banger? I wasn't ready for it
I'm actually watching this at 4am during a lockdown haha How prescient of you Jason! Haha
Good Stuff! Thanks for the vid on this! I just picked up a roll of this and I'm looking forward to shooting it. Be well, Benjamin

Seeing the footage flipped horizontally makes me wish Pentax made a right hand grip.
Looking forward to more wasted film stock with Jason!!!
I didn't expect the jokes, this is what I needed!

Legit watching this in my room in quarantine at 2:30am

It's been hard to come by some Pancro 400. I do enjoy shooting the film!
you've definitely become my fav film channel, sorry george
I thinks it’s the perfect time to make a video where you shoot an entire roll on Baxter
Also, pancro is my favorite night film, you should definitely give it a try

such a good video, thank you! 😇

UV and IR changed positions now? Woaaaah... far out man.
1:22 Jason: "anyone watching this at 4 am quarantined in your room"
me : watching this at 3.15 am in my room even though I have to go to work tomorrow
I developed a roll of Pancro a while back. It produced some nice results but it took 17 minutes in xtol 1+1....
