VIDEO SCRIPT (If you can't play sound):
If you're like me and you don't like the unreliablity
of an air mattress because it can be too noisy
and there's always that risk of it possibly popping,
then you might want to try this system.
This is two short Nemo Switchbacks.
And I layered them on top of each other because
I'm a stomach sleeper, side sleeper,
and a back sleeper throughout the night.
So I don't like my hip digging into the ground,
    I like to be comfortable.
And so I want to show you this setup because
I have plenty of hip padding so it's very comfortable.
I even have a little bit of extra head padding
to lift your head up a bit.
This is a really good setup and I really recommend it.
So to show you how this system works,
is you take the short mat which will be
your bottom, this is what your hips and
legs are going to be on
You take the second short mat and you got it to put over
    the first one.
If you put it only two folds over, the mats - the honeycombs
fit into each other and you actually don't much more padding at all.
This is practically almost the same as just one mat.
But if you pull it a third time, a third fold,
now you get more padding because there is more air,
the honeycombs do not match up and so you get a lot
    more padding that way
What I really like is that if you want even more padding,
you just fold two of the folds over on the top mat
then you pull the mat down three folds.
See that's one fold, two fold, and three fold.
And now you've got three thicknesses of matting for your hips
It's extremely comfortable and it doesn't hurt one bit.
I want to show you how the head folds in.
It's just simple, you just take the top fold and you fold it in
and it gives you some extra padding on the head and helps
you elevate your head a little bit.
It's not much but it is a noticeable difference
Now this specific sleeping mat system where you have three layers of sleeping mat
for your hips, and with the head folded, is only good for someone my size.
Five ten, five foot ten inches, because this isn't very long, your folding the mat a lot
your layering the mat over the other one so your losing a lot of height there.
Now you can do some things about this. You can take this fold
Push it back, three layers, and you just gave yourself, uh I don't know,
What is that? Another eight inches, just by that alone.
But, you know, if you're a tall person, that means
you're probably going to weigh more.
Which means you're going to want more padding for hips.
    I would imagine.
So I recommend you go with the Nemo Switchback Regular versions,
    They're like $50.00 each.
    and just go with that.
    This system weighs about 1.3125lbs
and the regular version weighs 14.5 ounces each.
And so this is a good system if you don't an air mattress
    that's really noisy.
I've already popped two air mattresses and I've treated them
very carefully. I've had them on a foam pad, I had them
on a ground sheet and they still popped.
So reliability is very important to me.
    But also comfort.
So one thing you got to take into consideration
like the only downside to this sleeping system,
    is the bulkyness of it.
I mean this isn't that big.
This isn't that big at all.
But it definitely is more bulky than an air mattress.
What I love about this is that they double up
as a seat during the day.
So you can put these side by side or just sit
on one of them and you give
yourself a seat when you need to take breaks.
This is the only con for these mats,
    is how bulky they are.
    Since you're carrying two,
I can't fit these inside my pack
I got to strap them to the outside
like most people do with their mats
But you got to have two mats.
So this is the only con I can think of.
    They're super comfortable
They're not noisy like air mattresses are
    They're reliable
    They're lightweight
    But they're bulky
So you got to be willing to have them
strapped to the outside of your pack.
Alright well thank you for watching

Great idea, I’ve got the longer one and will get the shorter one and combine them.

    I use two full
Length pads. I lay one completely out and fold one in half for under my back. It’s great. Not enough of a drop on leg portion to feel weird sleeping.

Ours floated, so we were told to place it on the bottom, like your lower one at the end, so if we jumped in the water, it would keep our hips floating or something. In short, it's a flotation device too!

I've been searching for a practical solution for sleeping also. I always fall off airmats as they are always designed so small and narrow. You can get larger wider ones but normally cost much more and still aren't so big. I'm 6,2 and 100kg, as well as being a stomach sleeper who always sleeps with one knee kind of sticking out the side. I can't sleep any other way. So right now I just carry two thick cheap roll mats so I can spread right out but it's not the most practical. Bit sleep is important! I think your idea is good though

I might try this with two Ozark Trail sleeping pads. Pretty sure they're made in the same factory as the premium brands.

Great video! I am a old time World explorer and I still use a kit like your showing for reliability as I camp in remote places with live stock and chickens or Scorpion that Will kill a air mat the first day. Air can be warmer and more comfortable , pack smaller. All those + ,s are useless if you can't keep the air in it and the Animals off the pad. P.S. I do use a air pad more in the USA but cats 🐈🐾😵. Thanks for a great video! P.S I don't use a tent.

    2 shorts, minus 6 sections, length: 181 cm, 71.4", 5' 11.4"
This is the main configuration shown in the video, with an extra panel at the head, and 5 extra panels at the hips.
    2 shorts, minus 5 sections, length: 194 cm, 76.5", 6' 4.5"
Same as above, but without extra panel at head.
    2 shorts, minus 4 sections, length: 207 cm, 81.6", 6' 9.6"
Shown at 2:59 -- an extra panel at the head, and 3 extra panels at the hips.
    2 shorts, minus 3 sections, length: 220 cm, 86.7", 7' 2.7"
Same as above, but without extra panel at head.
All of the above is based off of a section length of 5.12" / 13 cm, calculated as the average of the pad lengths divided by the number of sections -- the regular has 14 sections, and the short has 10 sections.

really cool idea, how cold have you tried using this system? Do you change anything for colder weather?

    • @BrandonBattelle
      @BrandonBattelle  2 года назад +2

Thanks :) I have only tried it in the summer with nights that get down to 40 degrees at about 7000ft elevation. Had no problems with that, but have since moved to a hyperlite cot as that has the best comfort. The cot is much more expensive and since you would be suspended above the ground it is much colder for winter weather, but it is a good 3 season sleeping system. I wish I could be of more use to you.

And now, when sleeping on side, your hips are elevated higher and can cause discomfort from the extra leg drop.

@@BrandonBattelle very interesting idea anyway, my biggest problem with these folding closed cell pads is that my hands and arms drop off the sides onto the ground in the night and wakes me up as my arms get cold, they don’t make them in a ‘large/wide’ size unfortunately, I’m trying to find a way to add padding so both the torso (hips and shoulders) have more warmth and padding while also adding width where my arms drop off the sides 🤔
I have a large/wide inflatable pad that I want a closed cell pad to go under to protect it but again these compact folding pads aren’t in wide size to fit under it properly 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @impermanenthuman8427
      @impermanenthuman8427 3 года назад +1

I could try a regular length Thermarest z-lite pad with another small length zlite pad cut in half and placed under the torso area of the regular pad so the ends stick out underneath my arms, but that would be heavier (although thicker/warmer) than a large thermarest ridgerest
