Hey Jim, thank you. I really appreciate your positive comments.. Hopefully you found this video helpful. This sleeping pad is one of my favourite bits of gear its just so comfortable... All The Very Best.. Tom
I've been roaming around a buying decision on a new pad. This excellent review and the journey and analysis towards this BA, sold me. Search over. I shall be buying this sleeping mat. Thanks Tom..
Glad it was helpful David.. I thought the journey to me getting this pad would be useful and great to hear that it worked for you. I love it and it still amazes me every time I use it.. Hope you like yours half asked much and you will be happy.... ATB Tom
Very plush pad. You wont miss surfing through your tent. We have sea to summit. Highly rate them but it's a skill to keep it under you, as for the noise you learn to stop moving. A good camp buddy doesn't snore and doesn't move around. 😋. Great content, keep it up.
Hey Matthew great to hear your thoughts.. Yeah the Sea to summit pads are supposed to have the most supportive baffling.. Probably the only pads I haven't tried.. That's some camping buddy you found who makes no noise.. Even my wife sometimes soars .. Thank you for your comments and feedback.. Out camping tonight so another video half filmed... ATB. Tom
I’m looking for a new pad and had a short list of 5… your review has just about sold me on this one. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, it’s an invaluable resource for buyers!
It's nice isn't it.. Out in it now in lashing wind and rain making another Video. Good to hear from you and thanks for watching and leaving a comment.. ATB Tom
@@cedarcanoe Well that's awesome.. Been to Sweden in the North in winter.. Was a place... Hope you are getting out in the wilds on a frequent basis. Tom
I camp very often and in all weathers but don’t hike, so weight and pack size isn’t that important. I use the Thermarest Trail Pro and have the size L. It’s a brilliant pad for those that don’t hike to a camp spot. Thanks as ever Tom.
Hi Bastiaan, great to hear from you and your choice of Thermarest.. Must look it up for a noisey... ATB and appreciate you watching and leaving a comment. Tom
Another good video Tom. I could never get on with my Thermarest, always found it uncomfortable.Bought a Exped down mat, which is fantastic. Will have a look at the BA mats for the Summer, cheers👍👍
Hi Ian thank you for watching and sharing your experience.. The exped mats don't get much publicity on RUclips for some reason.. I am sure they are pretty good. I used Thermarest for years but when my Uberlite failed it just turned the corner for me. Two of my friends have also had leaking pads that have been replaced under warranty.. ATB and thanks for watching.. Tom
I've had Thermarests since they came out some 40 yrs back. Some issues of late. I'm getting a Big Agnes as well, covered and wide. Size isn't critical on the motorcycle. Comfort is in the tent. Take care Tom. Enjoy your reviews. I got my green Staika in today.
Hey Sam, hope you are well and thank you for watching and commenting on my videos once again... Hey awesome news on the Staika... Have you done a back garden or spare room pitch ? No excuse as its outstanding... I mean freestanding.... ATB and now sort out the sleeping pad... Tom
Thanks for the review. Ive been thinking about purchasing this pad for a few months. Im sold on it. I'll definitely be trying out this pad thanks again for the review
Hey good to hear.. I have been very happy with this pad.. A bit heavy but the support and comfort are fantastic.. best wishes if you decide to go for it.. Tom
Looks like a super plush pad, 4.2 should be plenty for all UK conditions except perhaps summits in scotland during cold snaps lol. I have a EXPED Synmat Hyperlite LW and it is a very comfortable pad with 3 inches of thickness and vertical baffles. It's also fairly quiet. The issue is it has a R value of 2.9 which imo is only good to right about freezing, I have felt the cold a bit creeping in at -2/-3. For campsites in summer got the Trekology UL80 which is also comfortable but basically no R value to speak of. The Rapide SL is a very tempting pad for cold winter conditions I have to say, it's likely that or one the discounted previous generation Neoair XTherms I think.
Hi great to hear from you on this channel... This pad is very plush for sure.. Just look at the side profile... yeah thick pads are a little hard for manufactures to insulate that why some of the thicker ones dont have great R values. I think this one has got me covered for Ireland but no doubt that some Scottish summits in the winter would use its beyond its r value limits... ATB The x therms will now start to drop in price due to the NXT model but they have always been very expensive to start with.... Tom
Hey James, a great choice and thank you for your comments... I hope you are extremely happy with your new mattress.. I honestly still love mine.. All the very best Tom
Hey Rusty thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I always love to hear for other owners of the product that I am reviewing.. Great to hear that you love the pad.... ATB Tom
Hard to disagree Tom. I’m a bit spoilt with x3 pads in my gear closet. The uberlite, the rapide sl and the XTherm. I’ve used all 3 extensively and can say that the rapide is easily the most comfortable. However it’s also the heaviest. The xtherm is different than any pad I’ve used heat wise - it actually feels like a radiator set to low heat. It’s also 130g lighter than the rapide in large size. However as a side sleeper I do wake up occasionally in the night with a dead arm which I believe is more to do with its horizontal baffling than its thickness. The uberlite makes me laugh. It’s so small and lightweight and not much, is any, less comfortable than the XTherm. I have used it down to 5 c and been warm on it. Again horizontal baffles so dead arm syndrome occasionally. I have had issues with both thermarest failing but their warranty system is brilliant although it does shake your confidence in the manufacturing quality. I tend to sell gear I’m not using and don’t hoard it. But I genuinely couldn’t sell any of these pads for me they all serve a specific purpose. It depends what most matters to you. The rapide for comfort. The xtherm for winter heat to weight ratio. The uberlight for summer lightweight and mini pack size. If I was forced to pick just 1, it might have to be the rapide as it does everything well….
Hi Gary, I really appreciate your detailed comment here. You have great experience of using many different types of mat in different conditions. The fact that you actually own and regularly use all the mats I talk about here is fantastic as you can also give an unbiased view to help others through the nightmare of trying to pick one... You have covered all of the points and some in more detail than me so thank you once aging for your input here and on many of my other videos... ATB Tom
I have the XTherm and my last trip was only about 40F at night. You're absolutely right that it felt like a heater. I only had a 32F bag and would wake up with my side against the pad sweating and the side opposite cold. Was a bizarre experience. I think I may need to get rid of the XTherm since I'm not likely to ever be in cold enough weather to need it. I was also kind of sore sleeping on my side, which has me looking at other options. I have the original XTherm which I think is only 2.5" thick, so going to the Rapide SL at 3.5" sounds lovely. I have an Exped Megamat Duo at 4" thick which is wonderfully comfortable, but at 7+ lbs only for car camping.
Cheers Tom. It's quite a bit bigger than my NeoAir UberLite Regular Orion and probably a little bit quieter. I have yet to use it and we'll see how it goes?
So glad you love this pad as mine arrived today! I've got the Trekology UL80 which is great for comfort but no insulation. My colder weather was Klymit Static V but R value ok, rubbish comfort for a side sleeper. So I was torn between the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Extreme and this. Didn't need the extra R value like you say, and for the weight saving of around 300g (and cheaper) it was worth it. Good deal at Valley and Peak, next day delivery, reg wide pad, with 5% off for signing up to newsletter 👍🏻
Hi Simon great to hear you have just got one of these.. Certainly from my experience it's a great buy. I am out camping this minute soaking up the comfort of mine.. It really was a game changer for me.. Hope you have inflated it and tried it out in the house.. ATB and all the very best with it... Tom
I just picked one of these up at REI re/supply for $30 with a small puncture...repair kit was in the stuff sack rolled up in the pad lol. Works great, I love it.
Hey Frosty, your words described my thoughts but I just didn't want to say on camera... Awesome thanks for the comments watching. In tent now making another video..😁😁
Hey thank you for your feedback and great to hear that this video has helped you... Buying gear is tricky as there is so much choice.... All the very best wishes Tom
I love this sleep pad. Light enough for packing and super comfy. I have slept on snow directly from tent bottom and it does lose air during the course of the night. You can add some air while lying on it, but it does take good lungs! Still my fav sleep pad ever. Edit! I didn’t realize my fill valve had been left open. I tested it out again when I got home and it was fabulous. Absolutely an error in my part. I didn’t want anyone second guessing the Rapide because of my error!
Hey thank you for the comment and watching the video.. I really appreciate you sharing your experience of the Rapide.. Yes absolutely comfort it pretty much unbeatable in this class.. Light enough too for the comfort.. Best wishes Tom
Great video Tom. Eyeing this pad for some times to replace my noisy sts extreme. The only thing that stop me is the rectangular shape of the pad, because I am not sure if it can fit my tapered Nordisk Haaland tent if my wife came along. This pad is not available where I live so it has to be imported. Could be expensive mistake. Or maybe a reason to get new tent lol. No worries mate, just rambling 😂
Hey thank you for sharing your thoughts.. A new tent and pad are the way forwards and you know it ha ha... You have definitely made a fair point and this beast is wide.... best wishes Tom
Hi Phil, I was in the same position until I tried the Nemo Tensor. It nearly done the trick but then when I tried the Big Agnes it really was a game changer regarding comfort... ATB and great to hear from you. I hope you will be pout camping soon... Tom
I had the Thermarest Prolite but found it quite uncomfortable unless you added a cut short foam mat under the torso, then been using the Thermarest Xtherm for 11 years, proving the build quality but the mummy shape meant my feet / knees would end up off it as I meandered. I got this BA regular shape now based in part because of Tom's review. Toss-up between 20" regular and 25" wide so went 20" and just used some foam to each side which i always had anyway as a backup/protector for length underneath.
Like always ... it depends. I use a quilt and sleep cold. I have a Sea to Summit pad with an R value of around 4. During the colder months I find it too cold and can feel my heat being leached away. So for cold months I use the Thermorest Xtherm and for warmer I use the Sea to Summit. As always - great video. Thanks
Hi Dean, thank you for your comments and watching.. Quite a few use a combination for pads for winter and summer.. If you sleep cold then definitely a new Xterm NXT and sell your old one ha ha... ATB and I hope that you are out camping on a regular basis... Tom
Hey thank you very much for the feedback.. Sleeping pads can be a journey as it's very hard to get a perfect one.. All the super comfortable ones are still quite heavy.. I think you need to have tried many in order to review them.. This was just my quest for the best one and the others I have tried along the way... Best wishes Tom
Good review. I too had the Thermarest Neoair. The baffles in the centre of the pad failed, so that all the air pushed to the far ends with nothing in the middle, so I got very little sleep. Luckily it was on the last night of a six day hike. I did manage to get a full refund, but like you, I have lost all confidence in the Neoair. Since then, I have been looking around at various different pads with the Big Agnes starting to look like the favourite. Thanks for a good informative video.
This Big Agnes here also developed a leak so they all are prone to leaks after time.. Sleeping pads are probably the most compromised piece's of outdoor equipment.. best wishes Tom
Interesting I looked at this pad last summer as I already had the xtherm but needed a new 3 season pad I was using the sea to summit either light xt it was ok but I had the regular and it was 2 narrow my arms were always aching as they would fall off the sides when I got the xtherm I got the large so the extra width made all the difference.so when I picked my 3 season pad I went with the uberlite in large because the weight was my main focus.the noise isn't 2 bad with mine better than the neo air exlite I don't slide on it but I use a quilt so that may help so for me getting the extra width made it more comfortable for sleeping
Hey Craig thanks for your comments and sharing your experience of different sleeping pads.. So much choice.. I loved the weight and pack size of the Uberlite but when it deflated I kind of lost confidence in it and I suppose I started to look for other faults.. If light weight is yr main priority then as you say it's amazing and pretty comfortable too.. ATB and thanks for the comments and watching. Tom
Having tried quite a few over many years I bought an exped wide mummy last summer (R3.1) In my quest for a good nights sleep. Have used it around 16 tent nights so far no issues quite comfy, I find it a bit too thick for using in a bivvy bag making the bag a bit restrictive something to bear in mind if using a bivvy bag or a tent with a low head room.
Hi David, thank you for sharing your experience with expedited mats... Just dont seem to be as popular as some of the others. I looked at them a good while ago and was tempted but never pulled the trigger... ATB for many more nights camping... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 yep I was the same until one day I just went and did, does come with a excellent pump sack....using a noisy electric pump seems to go against the wilderness experience a bit too much for me.
just got one of these today (after much research, including this video), and it looks like they've changed the material for the pump-bag (in a good way), it's much thinner material now
I tried to think of a way to work it in but just couldn't.. Next video which is already half filmed and actually in tent now doing it.. Wind speed 30 mph so gutted it's not more.. I appreciate the comments and challenge.. ATB Tom
I suppose I measure the wind to give a true account of what's happening.. So many RUclips videos claim winds that are much higher than they actually are. Not everyone but plenty..😂😂
@@TOMHEANEY100 Head up to Chimney rock mountain for a good wind test, it seems to have a weather system of it's own, on a fairly calm day on Donard it can be blowing a gale on chimney rock, something about it's topography and being the closest to the sea must really let it catch strong wind gusts.
My old faithful NeoAir XLite (Regular) has a similar R Value (4.2) but at 357g is half the weight. Even my XTherm (RV 6.9) is only 450g, and I agree with you that it's perhaps insulation overkill for UK use. So the question is, does the superior comfort of the BA justify the 350g extra weight? I might just have to try one to find out.
Hi David, thank you for your comments and sharing your experience.... Yes its purely a comfort thing.. If you are comfortable on you current mats then not worth the extra weight and pack size... Big Agnes though is way more comfortable and are releasing a new mat shortly which has the same R value, probably 90 percent as comfortable but 200g lighter.... It's called the Zoom I think.... Food for thought... Thermarest also have the NXT versions now but definitely not a game changer in the comfort stakes... Tom
It will be a great pad as it is lighter, warmer and more comfortable as it is thicker than before. Thermarest in my opinion are lagging behind in the comfort area though due to lack of development in the baffling system and the actual thickness of the pads as still only 3 inches.. Still a good pad though with great warmth and low pack size. Does lots of things well but no real outstanding feature.. ATB and thank you for watching and commenting. Lots of choice and not easy picking one.. Tom
Hi thank you for your comments... There is so much choice of gear now to choose from and therefore a lot of pros and cons... Manufactures usually hype up their gear so it's great to find something that delivers. I love my kit as I regularly use it. At the moment I am very lucky and out camping once each week so I really get the good from my kit.... Hey thank you for watching and commenting.. Tom
I'd be looking up the specs to answer that. Q Core just a bit heavier and possibly bulkier. My limit weight wise was 700g and pretty sure the Q Core was above this.. best wishes Tom
I bought the BA rapide SL in June 2022. It is super comfortable. Warm. Easy to inflate. Before that I slept exclusively on Thermarest sleep pads. That said, over the last month or two, I noticed it was leaking. So much so, that I had to inflate it about every 3 hours at night, when camping. Moreover, I noticed that some of the internal insulation seemed bunched and unattached. Anyway, when I got back from my trip, I used dish soap and water in a sprayer to locate 3 micro leaks in my BA rapide SL. Then I sealed the tiny holes with aquaseal. Having said this, I never had to treat a leak in any of my old thermarests, despite owning them WAY longer than 2 years. Anyway, it still is more comfortable than those old thermarests. So I have mixed feelings about the BA rapide sl.
I too have now mixed feelings about this pad as mine also developed a leak..But then so did my Thermarests... I have heard of pretty much all brands developing leaks...Thank you for sharing your experiences... best wishes Tom
I have the Exped Dura r8 LW with an R value of 7.8. It is a tough mat and in my experience winter or summer just keeps you toasty warm in any conditions. Weight wise it is around a 1kg but you don't get really tough large wide Expedition mat with such an R value without the weight. However I must admit that Big Agnes looks tempting. Thankyou once again for an informative video!
Hey thanks for sharing your experience on the exped.. The extra r value is tempting too for only 300g.. Big Agnes are bringing out a Zoom new mat in April. 200 g lighter than this one and same r value.. Tech makes a big difference in matts and they are always getting better... ATB Tom
Another great review Tom,always enjoy your in-depth reviews, But you have me in stitches as the other week you found the perfect tent and then a week later you mentioned the faults in the strength, I think we are on a constant search for the best kit, I wish we could hire some of this stuff prior to purchase as the cost is so great, I would love to try various mats but stick to Exped for the only reason I know them and I have no issues, who invented the pump sac it’s so handy keep em coming Cheers
Fair enough! Great point re the perfect tent and now the perfect pad..😂. That tent was close and that's why I test them a few times before doing a review.. So unless this pad pops it is definitely the one... I am always looking at kit and this mat stopped me for now.. ATB and greatly very appreciated comment.. Out camping now in my Hilleberg Akto and soaking up the comfort of the Big Agnes.. Making another video too of course.. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 hi Tom, enjoy the camp I look forwards to it, have you wind ? It seems we can’t escape it, I am taking my heavy vango mirage due to wind tomorrow, will I ever decide on a tent !!!!! The f10 Vango helium comes close so perhaps the Akto lol Enjoy the camp
Hi Tom. As a fan of Big Agnes pads, I agree that they are very comfortable, lightweight and reasonable in packsize...But for me, my choice of sleeping pad was confirmed when I had a problem with mine - and out of warranty. On a multi-day camp, the pad failed - and I couldn't find the leak. On return home I contacted Big Agnes, explained my problem and sent them photos of where the pad failed (found when I got home).. Full replacement, no fuss, no cost, no postage - just excellent service.. Can't recommend them highly enough..still my go-to pad.. Good choice. 🤜🤛
Got it on your recommendation Tom. Super comfy and no migrating off the edge. 👍 Bit bigger & heavier tbh. But ill take it. I do use the FLEXTAIL GEAR TINY X 2 PUMP. With inbuilt light. Much easier, and the light is a bonus.
Hey Thomas thank you for watching this and many of my other videos. I am very pleased to hear that you have pulled the trigger on this mat and that you are very happy with it.. Yes it would be even more amazing if they could get it 150g lighter and a little more r value.... I will invest in a tiny pump 2 at some point as I got my friend one for Christmas.... ATB Tom
Great review, I have this mat, like you I brought it after much research, Boy, does it deliver! I'm over the Moon with it, so comfortable, has good weight/pack size, and is lovely and warm, I'd never use anything else.
Hi Steve, that's great to hear so thank you very much for your feedback... I honestly meant everything that I said in this video. The search definitely over for me as this pad was better than expected, and I had read all the reviews.... ATB and I wish you many happy comfortable nights camping on it... Tom
Loved my Ubeite too until night one when it deflated. Onto the Tensor again too but my second version is loud. Like Xlite loud. I do like my BA Axl and SLX so the Rapide might be worrh a look
Yes I am still very happy with the Rapide. Used it about 15 times now and absolutely no issues at all. Its comfort still amazes me every time I use it.... best wishes Tom
Thanks for the detailed review. Your experience mirrors my own - I have been using a Thermarest XTherm for the past (10?) years. It has been a great pad - durable, light, and small. But I'm not 20 anymore and getting a good nights sleep is becoming more important to me. I used a pillow for the first time on a 5 day trip this summer, which felt like the height of decadence, but made a big difference. Looking forward to putting this pad through its paces. Love the Hilleberg tent, I use the Anjan 3 - a palace for 2. Thanks again
Hey thank you for your comments - After using and continuing to use many different sleeping pads this one still blows them all away in respect of comfort... It's a little heavy and nothing special R value wise but I feel this is just where the technology is at the moment.. best wishes and I really hope you love it. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Hi Tom, as I've been waiting for the Rapide SL to restock I have seen a few people making mention of a couple issues associated with this pad, namely the internal insulation system. According to one person, the insulation does not extend outwards to the outer "rails" of the pad. Another found that the interior reflective baffling can sort of sink to the bottom of the pad instead of staying in the middle of the pad. Have you noticed any of these issues, or taken the pad out in cold-ish weather (around 0C)? Thanks for any input. Cheers.
@@GunSheppard Hi my rapide was not the SL and I had no issues down to about minus 3 degrees C. As you say the problem seems to be with the new SL versions. I used the Zoom UL and it definitely was not a particularly warm pad and the SL uses a similar design I think..
@@TOMHEANEY100 Hi Tom, thanks for the insight. I sent a message to BA yesterday asking about the insulation in the new Rapide SL. They said that the insulation does indeed extend the full width of the pad. The customer service rep I was talking to also said that it has different internal welds for the insulation than the Zoom UL, and that "The way the welds are it prevents it from moving around in the pad in a way that would make it unevenly distributed". However, BA said that should the insulation fall to the bottom of the pad that would reflect a valid warranty issue. Perhaps some of the negative things I had heard could be chalked up to QA/QC...
My next purchase I think. Light and warm. It’ll be a while before I can get round to using it - I broke my ankle on Slieve Donard last Thursday - 09-02-23. I managed to make the quarter mile or so to the wall and then descend to the saddle - all on my bum! I was out with Mountain Rescue in my home county in Fermanagh a few weeks ago and seen how laborious it is for this guys to carry all their gear up the mountain so I tried to make it as handy as possible for them. A simple slip was all it took. Looks like I’ll be living my adventures through your and similar videos for a wee while.
Hi Donnie, great to hear you may be buying one of these.. It will serve you well.. I am really sorry to hear that you broke your ankle.. It can happen to anyone as I have had a few close ones my self. Hey I wish you a very fast recovery and I really hope you are back in the hills sooner than expected... ATB Tom
Thanks for another great review. 👍🏻 my setup : for three seasons I use a grey Sea to summit ether light xt insulated pad (R3,2) that is 4” thick, 10cm. It is super comfortable. However I always bring a foldable closed cell type of pad (exped flex mat R1,5) using it as a floor in my packraft and so on. I always have that one under the sleeping pad. Adding layers means adding Rvalues, so I get R4,7. In winter I use Exped down mat R5,9 the same way, giving me R7,4. I live in Sweden, and hike in northern mountainous part. -30degC is common in winter. Summer nights can get down to freezing.
I used an Exped downmat UL and it delaminated after about a month of sleeping time. So i went, and bought me a 10 cm outfitter one. That one was so nice and comfy, i used it INSTEAD of my bed. Didn't care about R-values, it was just "right" at spots, where i just sank in, on my bed.😄
Thanks for an awesome suggestion, I may buy this pad! I sold my Thermarest pad as it was not the comfiest and got Sea to Summit Either Light which is also very good, but not as wide as yours its 55cm and 3.2R value but below 0 celsius I was quite cold and shivering. But those 2 for 3 seasons use with my partner should be perfect!
Hi Gregory, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment so that we can hear of the sleeping pad that you use and your experience of its.. The sea to summits definitely get a good reputation for comfort but the r value a little low.... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Im trying to find whats the difference between yours Rapide SL and Q-Core Deluxe as both seem quite popular but hard to find any info haha
Yes the weight is not great that's for sure but if you want comfort and many good nights sleep then its great for that.... I have recently tried Thermarest again and definitely not as supportive.... best wishes and I hope that helps Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Thank You for your kind soul. Am in Alberta Canada so we get too many winter days and I don't like the cold very much. It's worse as you get older. Kind Regards Dear 💗

@@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you Tom. I will definitely take that nice weather over freezing temperatures . My daughter was down in your part of the woods this summer in August she said it was beautiful. Have a super day my friend. 💕
i'm on the fence between the nemo and the rapide sl. the lower weight and pack size of the nemo are definetely nice, but i just love the looks and the thickness of the big agnes mat.
Hi Daniel.. thank you for watching and commenting.. I have used them both and you know my thoughts.. The Nemo is a comfortable pad, the Big Agnes is two steps up in comfort IMO.. But a little heavier and more bulky.. It's never an easy decision. ATB with your choice.. Once again thank you for watching and leaving a comment.. Tom
To make it even more difficult... Big Agnes has made the ZOOM UL now. Which should be extremely comfortable and it is lightweight. I have the rapide SL and I absolutely love it. No need to change for a lighter pad. But if I had no pad now, I would buy the big Agnes zoom UL
I often just do like Glen van Peski, thin torso length foam pad and ibuprofen 😂 I do like self inflating mats tho, the Thermarest Trail Lite womens is good as it has solid foam for the center bit and weigh like 700grams with a 4.5 r value. Really do want a solid foam self inflating mat that is thick and wide/long. But that probably will require me to invest in a sherpa. Wish I could find a small, light, warm and comfortable mat that’s puncture proof 😊
Hey how are you doing? Than you for watching my video once again and for continually commenting on my videos... Solid foam self inflating mats are still a little less bouncy but not by much and the baffles in air pads have got better over the years... Puncture proof is a hard one as many of the mats are not as durable as the manufactures make out... ATB and thank you once again for commenting here... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 always fun to watch some quality outdoor related content when you can’t get out yourself! I might need to try the BA/STS style baffles eventually. A friend of mine recently got the Exped Megamat, now that’s a mat!
Hi I had to get it replaced and its started to leak....So that was it for me with Big Agnes ... BUT to be fair I actually many sleeping pads are unreliable... I am now using the KILOS Gear AeroCloud Elite... just as comfortable and half the price...Have a look on the Kilos gear website... best wishes Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Superb, thanks Tom. I am reluctant to jump from foam mattresses but understand for winter I need something inflatable, so will check out the AeroCloud Elite. Appreciated.
I'm curious about the crinkle sound of the big agnes. I used a sleeping pad my brother let me borrow last year in the mountains of colorado, and the sound was so bad I ended up sleeping on the ground. So I'm in the market for a new sleeping pad, but nobody talks much about the noise comparison, which is a huge deal for me.
Hi this pad is definitely quieter than Thermarest IMO and from all the pads that I have used it's probably the quietest.. There are always compromises though.. best wishes Tom
No I just watched a review of it from Backcountry Exposure.. 10 mins ago.. 😁 like most things not a complete game changer but is 200g lighter and still very comfortable from what I can gather... Tom
Hi Billy, yes I have..ruclips.net/video/TgXocaCxdn8/видео.html. Pretty good all round and well featured... This guy slams them but I think he is being very unfair... ruclips.net/video/TgXocaCxdn8/видео.html. Hope this helps... Was almost going to leave him some contrary comments but that never really gets anywhere so haven't yet..... ATB Tom
So many experts - all using air-filled systems. Strange to me because I find them very uncomfortable, heavy, noisy, and expensive. I'll stick to my accordion foam for now. Interesting video though!
No worries I respect others choices that are different from mine... the z type pads are pretty good and a step up in comfort from a close foam pad... Obviously totally reliable too... Tom
You know your comforts Tom! Makes sense to have the best possible sleep while balancing the relevant variables 😉 I was grateful for my excessive R value mattress when I lost my sleeping bag the other night 🤭 Good to see your wide mat fit in the Akto also 👍 May you have many good camping sleeps with your Big Agnes - it looks great!
Hi Miriam, now that I am squeezed like a sardine back into the Akto I might as well be laying on something comfortable.. It's firs the Akto perfectly even if it robs me of some height and rammed my face into the roof.... ATB Tom
I had the same issue with the Uberlite. Third time I used it I found myself on the ground at about 1am. Not impressed for the amount I paid for it and it went straight back for a refund! I'm using a Sea to summit Comfort Plus at the moment and it's excellent comfort (dual layer inflation) very quiet, and same R value as your BA. I think it might be a bit heavier though!
Hi Neil thank you for watching and I hope that you enjoyed the video.. Yes I understand that the Uberlite is made of thin material and all pads are slippy but it was slippier than all the rest... One mine deflated on me then it was time for it to go. The Sea to Summit pads get a great reputation for comfort and the baffles... 1045grammes for the large mummy one is just beyond my weight limit though.... ATB Tom
Hi Claudia, thank you for the comment.. Exped mats are not really getting much media on RUclips so I have not tried them.. They do look good but definitely on the limit weight wise.. Always a bit more of a risk going for a less popular brand.. Best wishes Tom
Hi hope you are well... Ultralight Outdoor Gear in the UK.. Out of stock last time I looked for the regular wide..ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/rapide-sl-insulated-wide-regular-sleeping-mat/
Yes it's made out of the mat material.. I didn't find it great to be honest so bought the one you see me using here which is much easier to use. I also use it to stuff my sleeping bag into so that means no extra weight.. Many campers use the little battery pumps from flextail gear.. Hope that helps.. Tom
I really like their pads. I’ve an air core ultra. You can get them for as little as £60-odd at the mo. It’s the only bit of big Agnes gear I have but I really rate it Tom. Thing is, I usually need wide-reg size and with this I bought just plain reg but it is really a good fit for me cos of the baffle edge thingy. I’ve had great sleeps on it. ATB - Chris G.👍🏼👍🏼 I forgot to mention I have used extherm and I’m not knocking them but I’ve not been worse off temp-wise with my tensor or my big Agnes, just saying🙂
Hi Chris, I really appreciate your feedback here with Big Agnes. That Air Core Ultra is some value and the rapid was only £140 when it came out and now £180.... I tried an xtherm too and did not feel the heat that I expected. If they are super warm then not so good using in the summer so you need two pads.. The Big Agnes does winter and summer for me... Hey thank you for watching and leaving your thoughts and experience... ATB Tom
Hi, 1st of all I wanted to say thanks for the great review. I noticed this review as a year ago and (if ok to ask) has your views changed in anyway? Once again thanks for all you vids 👍
Hi Raymond, absolutely fine to ask and very relevant. My view has actually changed a little. Some sleeping pads excel in one area and are average in others. This is true here and the pad is amazing comfort wise and ok with r value, weight and pack size. Mine then developed issues with deflation and this was enough to put me off it. It was replaced under warranty but I decided to go back to Thermarest in the form of an eXTHERM... I will shortly be testing a pad from Kilos gear which gets a great review from Backcountry exposure. If its as comfortable as the Big Agnes here it could be a real winner as it comes in at a much lower price point... best wishes Tom
Oh yes I am afraid it does.. Slept 3 nights so far in AKTO with this pad.. It does further restrict your height though as the pad is so thick.. Not any sort of problem to me though.. Tom
@TOMHEANEY100 yes thank you so much, I noticed the heightened sides when you laid on it and thought better go with the 25" for comfort. Thanks so much.@@TOMHEANEY100
Great vid, as always. I have a nemo tensor alpine (large) for my winter glamping. Pretty happy with it. The BA looks really comfy though 😊. I can see the BA side ridges work really well.
That Tensor Alpine would be a nice pad with the extra r value.. well made too.. I really liked my Nemo and it was of great quality.. The alpine does not seem just as popular but very nice.. The side ridges on the BA help support and also good if the ground slopes away on one side.. Thank you once again for watching and commenting.. ATB Tom
Been using the big Agnes sleep system for years it the only one that lasted and didnt fail 5 years later i use the insulted core amazing and price is cheap
Hey Mark, trust you to have a Big Agnes sleeping pad and sleep system. I am new to the brand but been very impressed with this... That Insulated core will be a nice mat I am sure. Thank you for sharing your experience regarding the durability.... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 i have been buying American brands for years from large companies to small cottage companies love the scarp tarp tent tough and untra light look in to top quilts and look into zpacks backpacks when you get time i am sure you can get the gear for free from them
Really good review as always. I have tried quite a few sleeping pad combinations over the years like you and still haven’t found my perfect option. I can usually manage 1 night on any of my pads but when camping for longer periods I start to suffer more and more each night with lower back pain. A friend had similar problems and now swears by his Exped Megamat but the pack size and weight just seemed too much for lightweight trips. Having heard you speak so highly about the BA I think I might have to give it a try. Thanks.
Hi John, thank you for watching this one and your comment detailing your experience. Yeah I must lend you this one and let you see just how comfortable it is... The price has creeped up though which is disappointing as it used to be a real bargain. Its still good value though but I think its gaining a reputation and that's putting the price up... ATB Tom
Thanks for this review, looks perfect for me too.. I just need to find a wide / long in stock somewhere, seems rocking horse sh!t is easier to locate......
Hey thank you for your comments.. They should have better stock now it's high season for camping.. I really hope that you can source one really soon... All the very best Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 thanks Tom. I watched your clip again, I'm same height as you so bought a regular length. No doubt the extra 5cm would help, but since I sleep on my side, never on my back then my legs are rarely fully stretched out. Just got it today, and the trial on my lounge floor suggests it's going to be really comfortable. I didn't bottom out on it.
Interesting that you had the same experience with the Nemo Tensor. I had the long, wide model for about two years, and never really felt too comfortable, I don’t know why. But too expensive to just replace it. Now it started leaking, even though I treated it very carefully. I’ll look into this BA now 👍 BTW: do you the difference getween the BA Rapid and the BA Air Core Ultra? Seem to have similar R-value, bit the Rapid is way more expensive (if they’re available at all).
Hi thank you for the comment... The tensor was a nice mat but it just did not wow me comfort wise wheres the rapid definitely did.. Looking at the two mats from BA the air core ultra has a much simpler vertical baffle system which will offer much less comfort and support I would think... best wishes Tom
Hey Tom, great review - nice and to the point. We are also looking for a sleeping par for our long term cycling journey. Do you have any insights on the durability of the Agnes Rapide SL? Thanks again. B.
Yes, absolutely mine actually failed... BUT lots of them do from all manufacturers as they are trying so hard to make them lighter.. I have actually gone back to therma rest but I know these can fail too... I know that may not help but it's just the nature of sleeping pads..
So is this the 'regular - wide' version? Asking out of curiosity since I am about as tall as you. (sorry if you already mentioned this somewhere and I missed it). Seriously considering getting this to replace my Thermarest NeoAir All Season (which has been very trustworthy since 2016!).
Hi yes yes regular wide and it fits me perfect. I honestly have used this mat about 15 times and it amazes me every single time with its comfort... best wishes Tom
Borderline Stuart.. You must have some experience with sleeping mats before to know what is right for you . I do think this one in the wide regular would just be a little short.. ATB Tom
Thank you for the review. I'm looking to buy a new mat, and this one is a candidate for sure, especially after this review. one question - do you know what's the difference between this and divide? divide is more expensive in some shops, in others not, and I'm not really sure what the difference is.
From the specs which I looked up the divide has a less supportive baffle construction... It's much cheaper on all the websites I checked. I actually think it could be a good option for the money... ATB and I hope that this helps... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you for the answers. I did more reading and looks like the technology differs somehow - Primaloft in Rapide and Thermolite in Divide. But what is the practical difference between the two - difficult to find. Rapide is so overally praised that I'm leaning towards it, but that might be an effect of being longer on the market (?) and having more reviews. Uunfortunatelly the wide long version is out of stock in shops I used to buy. There is also one more new pretender - RAB Stratosphere 4. Looks like more durable (70D material) and the construction looks somehow similar. R value is 3.8 so similar as well. But it's very new and not many reviews yet.
Hi Tom, Always excellent video , you made the one I was looking for ! I'm looking replace my Nemo Tensor mummy for Nemo Tenso Rectangular burt now I'm considering the BA..To your opinion, Is the BA Rapid SL as quiet as the Neo? I find my Nemo really quiet and won' t change for a something more noisy . Thank again for your professional and honest review
Hi Remy, such a hard question to answer as I can't keep gear I am not using.. If the BA is noisier then it's not by much.. It's definitely significantly more comfortable though.. I could say it's definitely not as noisy as the thermarest s I have owned... I hope that helps.. ATB Tom
Hi David not loud at all compared to the Thermarests... It's going to make some noise when you move but the insulation comes from prima loft and not the crinkly insulation that Thermarest uses . I hope that helps.. All the very best Tom
Great video again, I'm just getting back into my wild camp after a long injury . What 4 season tent that can handle wind and rain without going over the top with price? Thanku
Hi have a look at some of the wild country tents such as the Trisar 2D or Kuiu Storm Star.. I haven't tested either but both should be pretty good in the wind for the price.. Hope this helps.. Best wishes Tom
My search for a very comfortable long/wide sleeping pad ended up on the same choice to make, went for the Rapide just cos its 200 grams lighter. The Rapide was 30eu more but that's worth it to me considering the weight im saving on a heavy item. Having laid on both pads, the 3D felt somewhat flatter of a surface to lay on, but both reasonably equally comfy to me on the shop floor. I think the 3D takes the cake ultimately in the comfort department. Sound/noise wise both pads are about similar. Unfortunately i haven't gotten around to testing my Rapide outside my home yet. Hope this helps!
No I haven't updated my old ones so no point reviewing old gear..I definitely will though if I change... Technology doesn't make such a difference with sleeping bags so no need to update them as often as other kit if that makes sense.. All the very best Tom
Hi Marty, pads are a tough area... This one is insanely comfortable but heavy at 700g.... Mine has now deflated on me on two occasions so I have replaced it. Very disappointed as at the time of this video I had used it about 5 times and it was doing fantastic... So I am heading back to Thermarest in the form of an Xtherm NXT... I hope that helps.. Tom
Thanks Tom, if its that comfortable, I'll stick with it. I keep rolling of the thermorest. I hope I'm not disappointed. Thanks very much for replying much appreciated. Looking forward to your test of the Nortent vern 1 ha!
Hi Tom, excellent review, as all yours tend to be. Even if most of the stuff you look at is way heavier than what I use I still appreciate a decent review. I'm considering this pad as a full comfort overnighter (as opposed to a lighter backpacking pad). I was wondering how the insulation has stacked up after a year of use. There seems to be some similar issues with the Zoom of internal foil sheets falling to the bottom of the pad and loosing much of the r value. How's yours been? Cheers, Rob
Hi Rob I have returned mine as it developed a leak . I never had any issues R value wise and slept to minus degrees centagrade.. But it is a risk regarding cold weather as there have been a few reported issues on RUclips.. I have a new pad to test in a few weeks and seems like other new pads on the market are possibly now challenging the Rapide.. best wishes Tom
@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks for the reply. I think I'll have a look at the Flextail pad for a fat boy. If only we could get a mat with the comfort of a Rapide but the reliability of the standard Neoair....
so hard to find someone who really does the work, speaks clearly and doesn't waste words for show. Thanks - very helpful.
ATB.

Tom
After watching your excellent review I have bought one of these pads to replace my too-narrow, slippy and cold Sea to Summit Ether Light. Thanks!
Hey, thats great to hear thank you for sharing... Its a great sleeping pad and I wish you all the very best with it... best wishes Tom
Tom
Got a big camp coming up so I'll take your word for it. Just ordered one of these
Hey James, a great choice and thank you for your comments... I hope you are extremely happy with your new mattress.. I honestly still love mine.. All the very best Tom
Picked one of these up myself recently, Brilliant pad, especially for a side sleeper.👍
@@andrew40 definitely buy the rapide sl. For the temps you describe it is insanely comfortable for a side sleeper in particular 👍
Cheers Tom. It's quite a bit bigger than my NeoAir UberLite Regular Orion and probably a little bit quieter. I have yet to use it and we'll see how it goes?
Yr very welcome..
Thanks for the detailed review. This info made my decision much easier. Happy Trails
Thanks Tom.
Great informative material. Enjoy your camping.

@@TOMHEANEY100 No worries Tom. All the best with your adventures.

Great to hear.. A very comfortable pad... Best wishes with it.. Tom
just purchased! thank you for the review!
Hope you enjoy it! and thank you for letting me know.. Super comfortable.. best wishes Tom
Interesting to watch, Tom. I’ve never veered from Thermarest Xtherms, but I may consider looking into the Big Agnes now.
Tom
Super-helpful video! I especially appreciate you comparing this to the other pads you have used. Well thought out and very clearly presented.
Great review. Looks like a one or two day hike/car camping bit of kit. I am tempted.
Yes just so comfortable and supportive.. best wishes Tom
@TOMHEANEY100 , maybe it's time to start thinking about the sleeping cot 🤔
Tom
Having tried quite a few over many years I bought an exped wide mummy last summer (R3.1)
In my quest for a good nights sleep.
After trying many sleeping pads this is luxury compared to them, i slightly under inflate it and its so comfy. 😍
Yes it's definitely the most comfortable pad I have ever used.. Thank you for the comment.. best wishes Tom
just got one of these today (after much research, including this video), and it looks like they've changed the material for the pump-bag (in a good way), it's much thinner material now
Yes the supplied pump sack wasn't great to awesome that they have changed it... Best wishes with the pad.. Tom
Who else noticed Tom did not measure windspeed in this vid? 😉
@@iwasapirateonce1639 Hey that sounds exciting.. I will definitely check it out thank you . ATB Tom
Tom
What about the new Thermarest xlite nxt. That’s my new regular wide future pad
Tom
Glad to hear you got some gear that makes you happy. It does take some time and a lot of money to get to that place..lol
Tom
Good vid. How does this compare to the QCore SLX? Still have mine. Love the pumphouse too. Sooooo much more efficient.
ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Oooh can't wait for a review, might stay off purchasing Big Agnes until you do a review Tom.
Another great review Tom,always enjoy your in-depth reviews,
But you have me in stitches as the other week you found the perfect tent and then a week later you mentioned the faults in the strength,
I think we are on a constant search for the best kit, I wish we could hire some of this stuff prior to purchase as the cost is so great, I would love to try various mats but stick to Exped for the only reason I know them and I have no issues, who invented the pump sac it’s so handy keep em coming

Fair enough! Great point re the perfect tent and now the perfect pad..😂. That tent was close and that's why I test them a few times before doing a review.. 🤜🤛

Bit bigger & heavier tbh.
ATB Tom

Thanks for that Tom Nice honest review going to get one myself.

Great review, thank you

i'm on the fence between the nemo and the rapide sl. the lower weight and pack size of the nemo are definetely nice, but i just love the looks and the thickness of the big agnes mat.
Hi Daniel.. thank you for watching and commenting..
Tom

How about sleeping bag? I didn’t find video about it on your channel
No I haven't updated my old ones so no point reviewing old gear..I definitely will though if I change... Technology doesn't make such a difference with sleeping bags so no need to update them as often as other kit if that makes sense.. All the very best Tom
Tom, how have you got on with this pad? I'm thinking of changing to big agnus as I'm not too happy with my Thermorest
@@rbreiff73 yes I think the flex tail looks pretty good.. It's one just recently on my radar.. All the very best.. Tom
What was the pillow you were using?

So the one in the video is the regular one and not the regular wide one of 25" wide?
Sorry for any confusion it's the regular wide.. 25 X 72.. Hope that helps.. All the very best wishes Tom
