I love how Emily breaks down the moves so well. She's very eloquent and so is Stephan as well.
@vintage1982 Hmmm, let's see. Do you think Marcelo Garcia (5 x World Champion, 4 x ADCC champion) is slow? I don't think so, and he uses the Seated Guard almost exclusively - in fact, that's who Emily learned the finer details of that position from
FWIW, I really love the extra explanation. So many times you see a technique demonstrated, and they'll say "grip here and here", "bend your knee", or whatever but never tell you why. I learn a lot more when I know the WHY and not just the WHAT. But hey, different strokes... whatever works for you.
This young lady is very knowledgeable and she explains a number of crucial pieces of information that allows a smaller person like me to use the seated guard vs a bigger stronger guy...and bigger guys need to know this so they can thwart the game of smaller guys. You did an excellent job young lady; you're very knowledgeable and talented.
What's her name
I've been playing this guard for about 2 years and these basic concepts have really helped me up my game, MUCH THX.
I've caught everyone at my gym with this at least once. Awesome sweep!
Still training? :)
After Emily was demonstrating how posture was so important to prevent being pushed over, she so effortlessly allowed Stephan to demonstrate what he would be trying to do without trying to block him. She's a very good uke.
They make a very good teaching team.
I appreciate the conversation and logic these two have before showing the technique
.
You guys are legit for creating and sharing these. Thanks so much!
I love seeing stuff like this. Great explanation by the instructors. This is a very old technique used in various Korean martial arts via the seated position (Wah Ki). It seems a lot of old techniques that people have disregarded are being rediscovered. Even though I learned it as a static technique it's great to see the dynamics the instructors employ with it.
thanks again stephan. love bjj and people who are willing to upload videos to help others. keep up the good work guys :)
best channel ive subscribed to so far. thank you!
Love the detail explanation. I wish all jujitsu instructors would explain those small yet important details, instead of just throwing you in the grind and hopefully find out on your own.
A lot of that comes from doing things so often they are second nature and not such a deliberate act, especially if it was learnt in the grind as you put it. So not so much neglected, as overlooked.
Dude I love it when people just explain the shit outta shit. Good video.
I like the explanation. I find it easier to apply when I understand the concept behind the technique. She expains it very well. Good Stuff.
Lots of great tips! Thanks!
I actually think the inital commentary is very good. For all those haters just remember that this is a small section of an attack pattern and what Emily and Stephan are trying to do is actually explain the theory behind the seated guard rather than just blasting out techniques. The concept is actually the light bulb moment rather than the sweep itself. Stop hating and think in context!
Good vid, good instruction. Nice move and takedown. Nothing like a free lesson from black belts. Good work.
Great video and good details are covered by Emily. Thanks!
Thanks for the video Stephan, you are a very good teacher!
I'm loving all this Emily Kwok-ness lately. I'm almost at that tipping point of ordering her DVD.
Fantastic explanation.
@vintage1982 strange, because I've watched Marcelo Garcia hit high level guys with it and also use it to set up other sweeps and attacks.
she has a great teaching style. very informative thanks !
nice! i've seen guys do tricks like this at my school...and it works every time! ...makes their opponent look like feathers.
finally a new video from you haha, good shit man
Emily is such a cool instructor!!
gonna give this a go next class, thanks for the awesome lessons!
Great explanation
Very interesting, now I understand the basics of this type of guard.. I needed this cause I have a bit of trouble breaking this type of guard
Very nice video.
One of my favourite video's!!! Ossss
I love these videos , I am a great liker of marcial arts and like all sports ,even in use of self defense, the difference you can make by a position/ orientation of circumstance (& added) awareness of body use done correctly....COOL !!!!
8:10 - she sweeps. You're welcome.
sweet! thx
Gracias
Good stuff all around.
Great vid! Awesome work. I love the way Emily teaches. Don't listen to the haters Stephan! I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion but some people are just ridiculous.
welcome back =]
thank for the video, ur great ^^
I've watched this several times and really like it. But I still have young, fast guys just getting around me and smashing me from the side. I guess it might take me two years too!
I love her videos..
I love your videos keepem comeing please
@vintage1982 If you've never had anyone back away to reset from your sitting guard...maybe your sitting guard isn't as dangerous as it should be? Search "Marcelo Garcia" on youtube, you'll see him aggressively scooting after opponents and hitting this backtrip sweep in SO many matches...vs Kron Gracie, Ricco Rodriguez, etc. He combines this with ankle picks and single legs really smoothly, he used this in nearly every match in ADCC 2009 if I recall correctly.
@khairuleven It's called a tutorial. It's better than someone saying "Do this", end of video. The more detailed the video, the more you can understand how to do the technique and how it works.
I am so tempted to try this on one of the taller guys :D
Oh it so works. Neat.
She explains very well
@vintage1982 If you're not treating jiu jitsu like "math science," I fear you're going to have a very limited game. Thanks so much for this video and all your vids.. I am really considering buying the 5 DVD set!
I like the 'Idiot Sweep'
lol I love this sweep. It so easy, especially when someone is standing up from your guard and they square up.
Amy Kwok and Stephan Kesting, how could it not be awesome??
I really enjoy Emily’s tuition, but,as a beginner I would have benefited from an example of preventing the ankles being attacked, how do I prevent that and not compromise my guard
love ya stepp
I have this series and think it is great. I would prefer if there are more high quality instructionals from grapplearts, that there are no more mirrors on the walls. I did find them distracting at times, and find it odd, why in a grappling dojo to have them on the wall where the matts are. If people started out standing and could stumble right by them.
From a purely sport perspective this is useful however from a self defense perspective you had better have Blue Cross if you are going to try this stuff against someone who really wants to hurt you.
Guys always say that while watching these videos: if it feels their doing these moves in an unrealistically slow fashion it's so that you can register the instructions. Obviously you'd need to practice it over and over until you can do it instinctively.
And if you're a small as her and someone really wants to hurt you: it's this or BE hurt, so pulling this off will be the only alternative TO Blue Cross: OR allowing yourself to be raped. Obviously running is the better option.
Guys like you always try to shout futility in any endeavors for a lady to be able to defend herself against a man: your average rapist/bully is not a trained warrior any won't have any fighting knowledge beyond beating up someone smaller or equal to them. That is when technique CAN save you.
The automatic value to this position for self defense is it's very easy to stand up from there, hell she even explains that. Its true in a real fight you won't butt scoot a lot but you transition to it from half- guard or closed guard usually. Cub Swanson uses it to stand up a lot in MMA. Its the ideal guard for MMA in my opinion....most apt to lead to you standing up. If opponent pressures...butterfly sweep. If opponent stands...inside reap to heel hook. Watch Demian Maia vs Ryan Stout.
Those of you who just wanna see the sweep, would have a profound Juijuitsu. You gotta be patient and learn the principles not just watch it and forget it the next minute
I have class in an hour, this will be getting used. ;D
Got to love arm chair mundials champs saying you have to use the inverted guard or Bola sweep instead of the basics
OMG!!! seriously, I thought this video was going to teach me something new but the payoff was completely disappointing. real good move for a white/blue belt maybe but really I've rolled thousands of times and never had anyone back away from me from a sitting guard???
it works
Her body is AMAZING!
I like that sweep though. I will try it and give some feed back.
I found that nobody ever backed away from my guard until I got good enough with sweeps that they felt threatened. Once they felt threatened while in my guard, but found it difficult to come through it, THEN they started backing away to work things like toreando passes.
@vintage1982 Troll less, train more. Having an effective seated guard is essential if you ever want to progress beyond blue belt.
I wonder how I could apply this in MMA. I'm a sprawl and brawler and I really like open guard.
@nevets7921 That is HILARIOUS man!
Nick Diaz did the "scoot" recently vs Paul Daley
@vintage1982 so you can see an actual example of this tactic. To prove it is not just something you do in a BJJ dojo when rolling with friends....
my favorite guard is the seated guard, and I don't see how it would be too slow for a fast jujitsu player. What she's showing isn't math science, it's jiujitsu science! >:)
I'm sorry, can you type the first line out again slower? I read it too quickly...
I hope she still teachers.
In a self defence position, wouldn't the attacker just launch himself over you, trying to pin you down with his weight?
Seems simple enough.
When you're doing the butt scoot, there will be a brief moment where your arms are extended behind you with your fists to the ground and your legs are extended in preparation for your next scoot. This seems like the perfect moment for your opponent to simply step in and sit down into the mount. Besides having better awareness, is there something in particular you can do to prevent this?
stronger core and faster reaction to but scoot also stronger hips
"The first thing I wanna do is get your flat on your back"
You and a few others Stephen 😂😂
The position you describe should not arise - if your hands are behind your back your legs should not be extended - you only extend them once your hands are in front of your hip.
Then if he tries to step in and sit down you get into either a seated or butterfly guard.
So avoid stretching your legs out unless you can scoot immediatly!!
Stephan is a black belt !? :O
@rangedat i've watched bas rutten's jiujitsu and i get it 100%.his explanation is simple and easy to understand, yet nothing is missing.because he combines the action and explanation about the same.jiujitsu is already boring to watch, now with a lot more talking it will be like 2 guys having a conversation.no offense to stephankesting coz its just me.and i dont mean should "do this" and end of video either.
@DonutsRGreat
Only because the other guy usually runs away.
No way I’m letting this woman tap me out. Idc how long she trained
@khairuleven bas knows jack shit about jujitsu, his grappling isnt high level and is ungraded in any grappling style.eMILYS COACHING IS AMONGST THE BEST IVE SEEN
STEPHANNNNNNN
Go to BJJ weekly #049
Marcelo performs it during an easy roll
good BJJ, but I have to say, seems like not so good self defense. I do like the concept though for the gym.
yeah i agree i'd feel like an idiot if this happened to me... MUST LEARN
Isnt this a butterfly guard?
Does she have RUclips videos
Ahh the But scoot 🧐😏😂
@tapthepope in strictly bjj tournaments i guess it's cool, but when people immediately sit at the beginning of submission grappling tournaments, they're taking away one of the most fun elements of the game: stand up.
And the award for Most Terribly Written RUclips Comment goes to...
@StephanKesting Yeah, but you're not Marcelo and you could not hit any guy with this move and bet you end up getting passed.
@vintage1982 uhh, do you know anything beyond what you've seen on spike tv? Because Marcelo Garcia debukes your opinion time and time again.
haha..."little Asian woman"...good sense of humor
"I don't like closed guard."
Tell me you don't train for self-defense without telling me you don't train for self-defense.
Emily has fought MMA. Have you?
@@StephanKesting Stephan - she is a phenomenal teacher and I bet an outstanding person as well. I am just mourning the loss of some of our most essential approaches to self-defense. Not meant as a slight to her or anyone else even though I think I came across that way. ;)
@scarred10 say that to bas's face
It's safe to say this is a "Guard Players" game?
butt scooting....or you know..just stand up lol
:56 I know Bjj , Show me.
This is the part of BJJ that makes me wary of practicing it. This technique is specifically functional against another person doing BJJ, but would actually be terrible for real life or MMA, because striking is allowed in those instances :/
Does anyone know of a channel that teaches intermediate to advanced MMA or street fight grappling?
You're going to learn a lot more by learning BJJ rather than some mma adapted version, even if some of it doesn't work well with a strong opponent. Fundamentals are important. But check out 10th Planet BJJ. No-GI stuff mma folks really like.
It's good to learn to standard techniques. It's impossible to teach a technique for all the different scenarios of MMA, you have to learn how to improvise on standard techniques for the situation you find yourself in.
you can try ***** but its more for beginers
Because no one in the history of the world has ever found themselves on their asses in a real fight with their adversary standing over them.... You have to understand, techniques are situational.
Lol thank you for stating that. That's my entire point and you need distance management for punch protection meaning the opposition needs to be grabbed closer to you so punches and elbows won't knock you out. The only thing I would suggest is Gracie combative. Despite what you may hear try and out for your self. I'm currently doing it and I can answer any questions you may have.
@vintage1982 Perhaps if you don't like what you're seeing here for FREE, you could PAY someone to show you exactly what you want to know... :)
@StephanKesting, dude you got it all wrong, Marcelo is not a 5X world champ because he knows the seated guard. He's the champ because he's good with his bjj game!
You're off the point to say that this guard is helpful why??? because Marcelo uses this?
Just the point of having the top guy stand square up to you does not make any sense. They are usually staggered feet like a wrestler ready to shoot. get a clue and actually try it rather than watching youtube clips all day, ya geek!
